First of all, Duggans is consistently dirty. I was at the lower bar one evening and watched one of their busboys take the kitchen floor mop and clean the inside of the back-bar beer cooler using the floor mop. Second, the food is always below average. Even for fried bar food, Duggans underwhelms. Third, the waitresses and bartenders always act like you are bothering them by merely existing. The one tall brunette bartender upstairs who is more attractive and friendly than the rest of them is amazing - but the rest of them are abrasive and bad at their jobs. The owner is clueless and cares only about the bottom line. He has run other bars into the ground and will probably do the same here. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a mysterious kitchen fire one night and the whole place burns in an attempt to collect insurance proceeds - that's just the kind of vibe you get here

I used to come here when I was younger or when the Woodward Dream cruise would roll by. You can sit up on the top level and watch all of the classic cars go by on Woodward down below. Haven't been back in years. Random impulse decision of coming here as well. My family and I were wandering around Somerset Mall and my dad asked if I'd rather have Shake Shack, Chick Fil A or go to Duggan's. Duh. I can get the prior two any time in New York. Also I hadn't had a drink pretty much all weekend and that sounded tempting. They have a much better craft beer selection on tap than I ever remember them having. I tried both a mimosa first and then a Milkshake Stout from Rochester Mills after. But they have a beer for everyone. Hard ciders and seltzers as well. The food was also way better than I remember. I think last time I was here probably in my twenties I ordered like a junior sized cheeseburger. Nothing to write home about but solid. This time I went with the Pocahontas. Yes, you read that right. It's basically a french dip. But thinly sliced shaved roast beef with provolone cheese, horseradish aioli, and the au jus to dip your delightful onion poppy seed rolls in. Damn was this amazing. I barely even touched my french fries (which were thin cut) because I wanted to finish this mammoth sized sandwich. They also have malt vinegar on every table which is a huge plus even though I was so distracted by the sandwich that I forgot to use it. Also tried the fried mushrooms and they were surprisingly pretty good.

Classic dive bar food. Tasty, big portions, but nothing spectacular. Great service & fun atmosphere.

I hate your service Duggans. I know you are understaffed and your people are doing their best. But damn your food is good and it makes up for the lack of wait staff. I know, I tried a little bit of everything here. Your fish and chips are by far my favorite. You literally just battered and fried up three baby cods and put them on top of my fries. DELICIOUS. Cajun steak pasta? Just the perfect amount of butter and grease to satisfy a craving but not enough to upset the stomach. Salads are crunchy fresh and the dressing packs a lot of flavor. I had to hunt down for my server to make an order in which it was still incorrect (salad still had tomatoes for my non-tomato eating spouse) but... if you have the mindset to come here... you already know they are busy and you should order your three Guinness's when you sit down. I'll be coming back. I'll research my menu and decide what I want the moment the server approaches my table. Lesson learned :) Whatever it takes to eat

License plate ceiling fan. Very cool.

I always enjoy visiting Dick O'Dow's in Downtown Birmingham as a quick relaxing stop. This week I…read morewas thrilled to try a beer called Peanuts and Cracker Jack that is a Caramel Porter that tasted like a meal in itself. I frequently see Mitch, the current owner, very involved in the day to day operations which means he's close to the action, aware, and he is kind. The Celtic Rueben is a good choice on a cold day if you're hungry. Also, the bar has two unique spaces to enjoy. Up front closer to Maple is more like an old school pub with some unique wood counters/bar and the back of the bar has more of a warehouse feel with a long bar with several options on tap and a great place to enjoy watching a game with friends.

It's a shame I can't leave a lower rating. I had an absolutely terrible experience here at Dick O'…read moreDow's. The food was disgusting, none of the ingredients were fresh. My salad had canned corn and jalapeños on it, the avacado was old, and the dressing was watered down, no flavor. The french fries, chicken wings, and chicken tenders were frozen from a box and just thrown in a fryer. They didn't even taste like they bothered to let to food fry long enough. The slider my son had as gross, luckily he's 5 and doesn't know any better, however he still didn't want to eat it. When we addressed this the server, who was new, she was kind enough. But then the owner, Mitch I believe, came out and refused to make any accommodations for the disgusting food. He got loud and boisterous with us, spoke down to us, and was even so bold as to claim that they have never had any complaints the whole time he's owned the place. Needless to say I'll never take my family to this place again. YOU should stear clear as well. This business needs to fail as it's a blemish on the prestige that comes from owning a business in the beautiful city of Birmingham. Find somewhere else in the two minute walk it would take to go somewhere else.

The restaurant had been closed for the entire week after the July 4 holiday, yet Kevin O'Mara and his team opened on Saturday just to host our family and friends. That level of hospitality meant a great deal during a difficult time. We chose the wild-caught walleye over the prime rib, and it was the right decision. Lightly breaded and seasoned just enough to let the fish speak for itself, it was excellent. The whiskey sauce bread pudding was memorable, and even the coleslaw stood out with a unique flavor that had everyone asking what was in it. What impressed me most, though, was how much the restaurant has evolved. We had eaten here six or seven years ago and left feeling the family-style meals lacked creativity. This visit was a completely different experience. You can tell Kevin has thoughtfully reinvented the menu, emphasizing wild-caught and organic ingredients, avoiding unnecessary additives, and preparing everything with care. The staff was attentive, Kevin was an exceptional host, and every detail helped make an emotional day easier for our family. Five stars. Highly recommended.

Our server was so great and attentive. After ordering, our server brought the most delicious bread and a small mixed green salad. The bread was so soft, perfectly salted and just so good. You can tell all the food is so fresh and made to order. We really enjoyed the chicken pot pie. Instead of a pie crust it was a large flaky croissant on top. It even had sweet potato! We also enjoyed the blue Mac and cheese. Definitely very bleu cheesy so don't order it unless you're a bleu cheese fan! It had a very strong flavor and was super cream and delicious. We can't wait to go back!

The…read moremenu for this restaurant falls along the lines of an expanded bar/Bistro menu with a heavy emphasis on sandwiches, wraps and burgers. Having heard good things about their Burgers I opted to go with their Classic Cheeseburger and fries for $15 and two of their house margarita's which were the drink of the day on Tuesdays for $5 apiece. Realtive to the burger, it was quite large at 1/2 lb and definately a two hander. It was well made, quite juicy, with fresh veggies and very very tasty. The fries were well made as well with a nice crunchy texture and quite tasty in their own right. Lastly my two Margarita's very well made and oh so good where I had only planned on getting one but opted for two after the first sip. NICE! At $5 a piece this was an absolute steal! Relative to facility and staff, the restaurant is visually very appealing with vibrant Irish accents, neon sign's everywhere and TV's scattered to allow you to watch the big game of the day while enjoying your meal. The decor defiantely adds a lot to the dining experience. Staff was very friendly with great follow up throughout. Overall this is a great bar/restaurant whose reputation is well deserved. I definately will be returning in the near future, probably on a Tuesday, so I can get some more of those tasty margarita's. :)
