I called beforehand to get an estimate for a mattress I would be dropping off. The price was very affordable, especially when compared with other junking hauling / mattress recycling centers. I took my old (nonworking) microwave in and I was in and out in less than a minute and not charged. The attendant came out immediately and took the microwave out of my SUV and I was on my way. This was my first visit here but not my last. read more

The people at Duke's are super friendly, fair on pricing, and make the whole process really easy. At first I went to the community landfill but it was too expensive so I called Duke's and headed over after they gave me a much cheaper quote. Now my junk is gone and it didn't take much time at all! read more

I replaced my garbage disposal and was looking for a place to dispose of the old one. Due to Covid, Austin's Recycle & Reuse Center had limited hours and was by appt. only. I called Duke's and they said I could drop it off that same day! They were super friendly and I'm glad I found them so I didn't have to have that disposal sitting around until I could get an appt with the Recycle & Reuse Center. Thank you! read more

Amos showed up right on time, so it was off to a good start. We had discussed a price for 10 cubic yards, half of a 20 cubic yard trailer ($250). Right off the bat, Amos let's me know that he has a 30 cubic yard trailer instead of a 20ft trailer, and coincidently estimates my load to be 15 cubic yards. So my new price is $375. I got a tape measure to try to get some estimates of rectangular dimensions of my pile of stuff. At this points he threatens to just walk away, though I he agrees to stay to do the calculation - the roughly calculated volume is 11.5 cubic yards. I ask for a break - $325, and he refuses. Another person shows up and says that Amos has drastically underestimated the volume, so 15 cubic yards was a generous estimate. Both of them kept saying that they do this all the time so they are good at eye-balling the volume, which would suggest to me that they are constantly ripping people off who are in a spot because they need the stuff gone. I mentioned that I could get a dumpster for $375, and they said there is no way (in fact, I found one with a quick search, $305 for a 10 cubic yard dumpster and $395 for a 20 cubic yard dumpster). They were pretty curt with me once I started pressing them on the price, and squealed their tires on the way out. This was not a good experience to say the least. This behavior suggests they are used to people taking whatever volumetric 'estimate' they are in the mood for, rather than trying to be fair to their clients. Update - I loaded the pile into a uhaul trailer 6'x12' and took it to the dump. The pile ended up being ~3' high. The dump charged me for 7.3 cubic yards, which was further confirmation that Amos and his buddy consistently over-estimate the loads they pick up, and were definitely overcharging me. Completely frustrating. read more

Established in 2014.

Duke's Junk Recycling was founded to serve the junk recycling demand of Austin, Texas. On average, we recycle 80% of residential & commercial junk. We have a location in Central Austin and just opened our second location in North Austin.

Amos decided to start Duke's Junk Recycling when he was 19. He was introduced to the recycling community and fell in love with the idea of a clean environment. Amos hopes to one day see Austin become a zero waste city.

I love these guys! I'm a small business landscaper, so I have trucks full of mixed trash all the time. From old edging, to plastic grow pots, to broken planters, plant debris and dirt. I always bring it here. There's no sorting, they unload for me, and their prices are affordable, they charge by the cubic yard, and they're always super nice and willing to negotiate with me. They'll take almost anything, and now they're even closer to town. They also take couches, mattresses, old appliances, pretty much any junk you have. If you got junk, bring to Duke's. A friend told me about these guys and I took some stuff to them without notice, sight unseen. They were great, gladly took my cardboard boxes and styrofoam, moved people on thru the line quickly. There were a couple of trucks and trailers in the street waiting in line to get in but they moved people on thru the line quickly. I think this is a great resource in town for people to use instead of trying to get to a landfill or COA site in far south Austin. I went up here after searching around for couch disposal in Austin. These guys are the best! Amos runs the place and is super friendly so ask for him. They offer furniture disposal and mattress recycling which is cool. I think they recycle most of the stuff that people drop off for waste disposal. They offered to help unload my truck! Dropped off an old heavy army trunk. We had it outside where it was just deteriorating. Goodwill wouldnt take it and theyve brcome really picky when it comes to old stuff. We dropped it off at Duke's and they took it with no problem. They were super cool, fast and nice to deal with. It was worth the small fee and drove in and out in less than 5 minutes. My latest COVID project was cleaning out the garage. Duke's came to the rescue when I found out neither the city's bulky item pickup nor its hazardous waste center were operating. Dukes took several items that were too big for my garage but too trifling for the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store.
