I needed to get a smog check today on my Subaru. I waited until the last minute and it was due today or I would have paid late fees :/ I first stopped by Integrity to see if they had a spot (since I'd been there before) but fortunately they couldn't fit my appointment in until Monday. I looked for other local Scotts Valley auto places that did smog checks. I found Duncan listed and called and the owner said to come down ASAP and they could do it. I got there a few minutes later and probably was there only about 10 minutes for the paperwork and doing the smog check! The owner said they'd already done 9 that day... it was only 10am :) The price was $50 which was going to be the same as Integrity only if I used their online coupon for $20 off. The staff and owner were friendly. The price was good. The turnaround time was amazing. They certainly have a new customer. read more

I stopped by yesterday without an appointment. I had a small window of time to get a smog check done. My schedule was full for the next few weeks, so it really needed to be done now. The employee checked the data base to see if they could fit me in, and the only opening was Monday. These guys are outrageously good. I just brought my daughter's old Ford Ranger in to them to get the headlight and tai light plastic coverings fixed. Can you believe these guys at Duncan's scoured the junk yard markets to get replacement parts for this old vehicle! They saved me so much money, and the replacement parts are terrific. Duncan's is a local, feels-like-family business, where they know you when you drive up and they honestly try to help you and get you on the road as soon as possible. We've been going to Duncan's for years, with all five of our cars, and we've nearly always been pleased. The few times when our troubles weren't solved, Duncan's was generous in giving more time and attention for free to try to remedy the issue. In fact, there have been times when we've gone to the local rival car mechanics (I won't name them, but they're south down the road a couple blocks from Duncan's), and we've left with even more problems then we brought in, and have had to go to Duncan's to get it re-fixed. But don't take my word for it: every day we drive past Duncan's, and every day it is bustling with customers, many returning from years of happy service. I just drove 350 miles from home in SoCal to Scotts Valley for a new job. The tire pressure light had turned on for the last couple of days. Aaron agreed to take a look at 11:00 AM although he is very busy. He diligently checked all tire pressures and went into the car system setting and hit the calibrate button. The light disappeared. He did not charge me anything. Thank you Aaron for being so kind and considerate! You gave me a peace of mind especially being far away from my home turf. I called about getting my car smogged, and they said no problem. I intended on leaving it and picking it up sometime later in the day. To my great surprise, when I showed up the very nice man helping us said, "Hey, let's just take care of it right now!" Twenty minutes later, I was out the door and super happy! It also cost $15 less than the gas station up the street. Cool. I'll definitely be back. Oh, another bonus: the shop was clearly busy, but not one of the staff seemed pressured or grouchy. One of my 10 year old car's windows wouldn't go up or down any more so I went by Duncan's to see about getting it fixed. They quoted a reasonable rate so I left my car with them. About an hour later, Matthew called me to tell me he noticed a big clunking noise when I drove in and again when he moved my car and did I want him to figure out what it was... he said the diagnosis would take no more than an hour since he had an idea what it might be to start with. He quoted a price, again reasonable so I said to go for it. I had already had two shops and a home mechanic look for this clunking noise and I had chased it with a part that didn't fix it so I was happy that he noticed it without my prompting. He called back and said what it was and how much to fix it. He said it wasn't a safety issue now but would become one with time. He quoted a good price for the fix, so had him do it. Sure enough, the noise is gone, my suspension feels rock steady finally, and the annoying random shimmy is gone too. Oh, and my window is in working order again. My cluster went out on my dash and the dealership told me it couldn't be fixed. I knew that wasn't true as I had already had it replaced by that same dealership years before. I took it to Duncan and they told me they could fix it, no problem. Then they went over the options with me and helped me find the least expensive way to do it. I now have been taking my car there for years and have always been very happy with the service and with the work done. I even recently took my car in to get it smogged and he said he could do it in 15 minutes. I was actually out of there in less time than that even after paying, etc. I won't take my car anywhere else. read more

My first and NOT last experience at Duncan Automotive was pleasant from start to finish. I arrived on a busy morning and although they were not expecting me (I did not make an appointment) and already had full garages and cars in queue they graciously squeezed me in for an oil change. I did not expect to be offered this and in the future will always strive to make an appointment because I would not want to inconvenience them nor do I expect them them to go out of their way or take time away from customers they had prepared for. That said, the service was on point, well-educated staff, easy to communicate with and did not once feel as if more was being done or offered than was necessary. In short, they were punctual, courteous and although I'm only hours out from the service appointment, the oil level seems appropriate. I'll return in 5,000 miles or sooner if needed. They have been servicing my 12 year old Isuzu for many years, everything from smog tests and oil changes to replacing the clutch and timing belt, and I've always been pleased with the friendly service and work that was done. The only problem I ever had was when a faulty part was shipped to them, installed, then failed; they replaced the part for free and I never hesitated to go back, and I have since recommended them to several people in search of a good mechanic. read more

I had a horrible experience at this shop. No joke-they ended up costing me many more dollars (over $1,000 more) than other shops after I left for the same work that wasn't done correctly at all at Duncan- well after they told me it was completed after high priced unneeded parts were added to my bill. ..if you need someone to do your oil or a simple brake job then I'm sure they will handle that kind of work for you. Just don't ask them to get out of 1st gear (they're actually stuck in stupid and stoned) for anything more complicated, even when they tell you that they can handle it for a particular price. And don't trust the smiling nice guy faces at the counter because it is a facade. They talk dirty about you behind the door as they add up unnecessary items on your bill. If you want to pay more for professional liars and scam artists then this shop is for you. read more

I've used Duncan Auto in the past and always been really happy with their service and the work they have performed. For one reason or another, I hadn't been back for a few years, but when I stopped by recently needing a headlight bulb replaced (yeah, I know I could probably do it myself) I expected to be told to come back in an hour or so, since they looked really busy based on all the other cars that were in the shop and parked in their tiny parking lot. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was in and out of there in what seemed like five minutes and I was very satisfied with the nominal fee they charged. They were friendly and even looked at my tires and gave me an opinion about what I should do, without pressuring me into signing up for additional services. Also, the general manager remembered my first name even though I hadn't been there in several years, which really impressed me. Great service! read more
