The coffee tastes good, but 'm docking a star because even as I type this after leaving, I can feel the not fun effects of caffeine. It can be hit or miss with consistency of what constitutes a large and how milky your drink is, the prices seem to vary from visit to visit, and I often don't recognize the employees. High turnover? There is no public restroom which can be an issue whilst consuming beverages. Aroma also charges a fee if you pay with plastic, so I try to carry cash. I recall being charged for a cup of ice for my herbal tea in the past. Sometimes the tables aren't so clean and the baked goods case can have flies in it. It's looked better this summer. The wooden chairs can be wobbly. Overall it has decent atmosphere. It smells good like caramel when you walk in. There are two metal tables with cafe chairs as well as a bench outside, weather permitting. Rat Pack & classical outside. When music is on inside it's a different genre. The hours can be funky especially in winter or even be unexpectedly closed, but they are never open past 5 PM. Peru rolls the sidewalks up pretty early. I do like that they offer plant milk and have decaf without a weird lecture like the place around the corner... They usually have soy and almond. No coconut, but I usually go with soy lately anyway. Raw sugar, stevia for Lydia, and at least one decaffeinated tea. The baristas I've had recently were pretty pleasant. They have an array of baked goods including bagels and some other food and drink things in a refrigerated case. I've not ever tried the food myself though it looks good. I'm assuming it's local artwork which I've seen for sale on the walls along with handmade jewelry, mugs. They have a sandwich board for a donation program where you can buy a coffee for someone in need. Aroma has loyalty punch cards as well. You can enter the bakery next door through an adjoining door. Walking past I saw the case next door had cupcakes and heard a cake order being taken. So, while Aroma has flaws and I've been to better in other towns, the prices are pretty reasonable for this century and the atmosphere is alright. Cozy and on the Bohemian side. I don't go running there with excitement, but it's alright to sit and chat, especially when it's not crowded, which it often isn't. I like the downtown location.

Modoc had just performed her last show for the American Circus, when she escaped. The inside of the market is homey with lots of space to work, read or enjoy a chat with a friend. I ordered a smoothie. The clerk told me which smoothies were made from fresh fruit, so I ordered the blackberry smoothie, which came with whipped topping. They also serve coffee and pastries. I shopped around the market and read Modoc's story as I waited for my smoothie. The market sells their own coffee blend. A children's play area with books is available to keep the kids entertained for a bit. My smoothie took about five minutes to prepare and was fabulous...creamy and fruity. If I lived closer, I stop by everyday to try all the flavors. Modoc's is worth a visit. There is limited street parking.

I swear there used to be a walk-up counter and tables outside. This time, it appeared to be drive thru only and no tables in sight. It's somewhat hot & humid outside anyway, but I didn't feel like just hanging out in a car. There was a closed window at the front that might be for walk-ups, but a little neon sign which said "drive thru" seemed to be directing us to do just that. The gravel lot seems a bit unkempt now. Stuff on the ground. Balled up white plastic tarps? The drive up window is too high for a car. What is really irritating is that I asked if they had decaf & was told they could make that. I ordered a 32 oz iced decaf. It clearly states that an iced coffee of that size is $5 on the menu on the outside of the building. When I asked what plant milk they had, I was first offered 2%. When I rephrased as "non-dairy" I was told they had oat. I also asked for one sugar. I regret not asking for sugar in the raw, if they even have that or actual sugar at all... I glanced to the bottom left of the menu and saw a list of plant milk which included soy, so I asked if they had that and was told I could have that instead. My total was $6.68. I asked if there was an extra charge for the milk and said the sign read $5 for a 32 oz iced coffee. The woman at the window said there was a bit of an extra charge but didn't say how much. If it's posted anywhere, I missed that. So, $1.50 extra plus tax?? If so, totally unreasonable. When I was handed my change, I saw on my receipt that along with the other details, it said "2 syrup pumps." I didn't ask for nor wanted that. Sigh. So, a large coffee. Not too much ice. Better milk to coffee ratio than in the past, although service was much friendlier before. It was ultra sweet though. And since there was nowhere to sit, we went elsewhere for a short walk and a sit down. Before too long, I started to feel weird. Yep. No way was that decaf. In hindsight, my order was ready too quickly if they needed to make fresh decaf. I'm sure the syrup most likely was HFCS and wouldn't have helped matters either. That explains the almost sickeningly sweet taste. I know how badly I feel if I consume caffeine. I couldn't even finish this. I dumped the rest out & took the cup home to put in my recycling. I can't trust what type of milk I received either. What a waste of time and money. They ask if you are using cash or card and charge extra for using plastic like many other disappointing businesses in this area. Luckily, I had cash on me. The woman with me did not and was charged extra. Her iced coffee was over $5 for a smaller size. I don't feel great now from the caffeine, and this experience has added to my trust issues. Incompetence, poor customer service, and a lack of decency and honesty are not traits I look for in an establishment. In all honesty, I feel ripped off. I don't plan on returning to this dumpy little purple shack. I'll save my money and use it on a moving truck to return to civilization where actual baristas exist.
