Smoked meat is another word for pastrami - but with a twist. That difference in flavor differentiates it from it's more famous cousin. But this place is amazing. The flavor of the meat was terrific. Honestly, we couldn't get enough. Even though our time in Montreal was limited we came back to this place twice. So good. FOOD: Like I said, delicious. You have to get the smoked meat even though they have plenty of other things. Of course you can get the classic poutine also - a Canadian classic. But you're here for the smoked meat. For sure. SERVICE: Good! Can't complain. People were very nice with us tourists and the portion sizes are huge. We had enough to take back with us each time. COST: Very good for the quality AND quantity. Totally worthwhile.
We came here for a late night dinner around 10. Thank God they were open or we would be starving. Even though it was late it was still full and it kept filling up with late diners and young people. I ordered fried rice, it was good I ate half of it it was a big serving for me and hubby ordered the sandwich and he liked it. The egg rolls were amazing as well. Our waiter was very attentive and our food came in a reasonable time. It's a casual place, plenty of tables and bathrooms are located downstairs.
We walked to Dunn's from our hotel, looking for a late night dinner of Poutine, and heard they had good smoked meat poutine. Although we read that service wasn't great, we decided to give it a try. The place was busy, but not packed. We were seated right away by an unfriendly host, which tracked with reviews. Our waiter came by and quickly took our drink order, and then we chose to order the smoked meat poutine. Drinks were delivered to our table, and we enjoyed those waiting for our poutine. There were a few games on the TV's around the bar, and the place had a fun atmosphere. Our poutine was delivered and Wow. There is a ton of tiny shredded pieces of the smoked meat atop our poutine with gravy and cheese curds sitting over the fries. The food was really good, we enjoyed the poutine. Our server never came back to check on us, we had to ask for the check, and there was no interaction with the staff even over the check. It really is too bad as we found the poutine to be very flavorful, the meat was melt in your mouth tender and had a very nice smoky flavor to it. We knew the service was going to be a hit or miss, just wanted to try the food. If you can overlook the lack of friendly service, the food was good.
I've really tried to give this place chance after chance, but it just keeps disappointing. This time I ordered the Club Roll, and honestly, it was nothing like the photos they show online or on Uber Eats. Instead of a stacked smoked meat sandwich, what I got looked more like ham, salami, or even bologna definitely not smoked meat. The portion was small and felt misleading compared to their promo pictures. A couple of months ago, I also tried their Louisiana potato soup with bacon, and it came watery with almost raw bacon thrown not slow cooked, not even crispy, just undercooked. Totally unappetizing. Their smoked meat sandwiches aren't much better. When they do give smoked meat, the slices are cut so thick that they fall right out of the bread and make it impossible to enjoy. The only positives: they're generous with the fries (if you're lucky enough to get them fresh and crispy), and the pickle and coleslaw are usually solid. But for a place that's supposed to be known for smoked meat, it's really disappointing that they can't seem to get the basics right. It sucks, because this is an iconic name in Montreal. but based on repeated experiences, I just can't recommend it anymore. I will forsure keep trying and hoping
What a fun casual place with good poutine. Our table looked like the twister game, I noticed other tables had other themes such as Pac-Man. We ordered poutine and an order of Fish and Chips and shared both between us. The poutine was excelled but the fish and chips were just OK. The service was friendly and although our food was served quickly, we ordered dessert and ended up cancelling the order because it took so long. I want to go back and try their smoked meat sandwich!
From start to finish this place was a mess. Our server weakly "greeted" us after we called out for acknowledgment. After being sat, we were met with with the rudest server I've experienced in Canada. He picked on my dining partner for not understanding the difference between two of the sandwiches. My dining partner - who is not even from the North American continent, speaks English as a second language, and has an accent that clearly demonstrates this - was unsure about open face versus not open face. Our server made a quip that was pretty rude and straight up ignorant, but he lacked self-awareness to figure that out. Now this terrible experience with 2 of the service staff barely factors into why this place gets one star. We were told that this place had great smoked meat. To my knowledge, smoking meat with particular wood gives it a very nice flavor and often times it is seasoned. I have had smoked meat in the American South as well as the Australian Outback and it is bombastically delicious. This is not funny, but I laughed at it. The food that he was served was a significantly smaller portion than mine, which is strange because he was rudely told that the only difference between the two sandwiches was that one had bread on top. Look at the photos and tell me if you spy the difference. We had some appetizers (the only reason this place gets more than one star) and they were mid, but they had something that the smoked meat didn't have: flavour! The smoked meat here is like wet sawdust. It tastes like nothing. It's not dry, which is good, but it doesn't taste like much of anything. It was simply terrible. My dining partner ate the food as a source of protein and sustenance and nothing more. He was appalled. What made this even more of a ridiculous situation is that while we were trying to eat our MDF-level meat scraps, our server decided to have a conversation with the table behind us and complain about the pro-Palestine protesters that day, saying that if they don't like it in this country, they should go back to their own. I get being frustrated about traffic being blocked, but spewing anti-immigrant sentiment creates for an uncomfortable dining experience in a city that gets any amount of tourism. For the service to be so bad, you would think that they would really step it up with the food so you could at least say "wow" at the end of your meal, but it was a shocking disappointment. With the double whammy of the bad food and not great server, I am flabbergasted at how this place is still doing business like this.
We tried Dunn's for the first time and the service was impeccably fast. The host was patient with us as well. Although we ordered take-out, the place had a nice ambiance with lots of seating. We got poutine as well as the smoked meat sandwich. We also ordered the Dunn's famous smoked meat poutine and the smoked meat burger. The smoked meat poutine was covered in smoked meat and packed with flavour. There was a perfect ratio of cheese curds to gravy to fries as well. The smoked meat burger did not quite live up to our expectations. The burger patty itself was dry and there was only a few slices of smoked meat. On the other hand, the smoked meat sandwich was great! Highly recommend. If you're ever in Montreal, definitely hit up this spot.
We had a bit of a wait on a rainy week day but luckily we were able to wait inside where they have a bit of space for a few parties to be seated. This is a lovely sit down restaurant. There is a small bar area with just a few bar stools if you prefer bar seating. A large U-shaped booth takes up the front window and would make a nice spot for a group. The menu here is extensive. Although they offer smoked meat, the menu runs from starters to dessert with a variety of salads, soups, poutine and pizza. Their sandwiches come with sides of fries, coleslaw and a pickle. Besides bar items, the offer coffee options, hot cocoa, milk shakes and sodas. The kids menu includes ice cream with each selection. We didn't have to wait too long to be seated at a table for two with a knee wall to one side and a large party on the other. The hostess left us with menus and flatware. The waiter took a bit to arrive and by then I had read over the menu, made my choice and had time to look around. This is a comfortable space with high ceilings, rich tones and several TV's around the room. The table, seats and floors were clean. Restrooms are in the back. The wait staff were in constant motion and although professional, none had any time to be chatty. Items were dropped off in a hit and run fashion as they tried to keep up with the crowds. My soda was served in a can, but I did see fountain drinks as well. It took a while for our meals to arrive. Served on a natural material basket with a paper liner I have to wonder how sanitary is that basket after a few meals served on it? Can they run that through the dish washer? Anyhow. I got the smoked meat bagel with swiss, lettuce and tomato on a Montreal Bagel. This was a very nice sandwich. Condiments are on the table if needed, but I enjoyed this as is. These Montreal Bagels make a very nice sandwich. My sandwich meat was very lean, but my SO's sandwich had one huge fatty piece of meat included with the lean meat. It looked like it has been cut off, put aside and then accidentally scooped up and added to the sandwich with the rest of the meat. He just pulled that off but you can see it in the photo. Some folks love a good fatty piece of beef so you might drool over it. Other than that, both sandwiches were very lean. His Le Petit Combo is a 'small' (plenty big) sandwich served on Rye w/fries, coleslaw and a pickle. Those pickles are tasty. Although very busy and with one obnoxious guest in the large group that even they clearly wished would go away, this was a pleasant dining experience. There are two famous smoked meat restaurants in Montreal. This one is older by one year. They each have different pro's and con's. Definitely try this one out.
The service here is what you would expect for a sports bar... and the seating is a bit tight but you're here for the food! Huge menu with some vegetarian options in each section. You can get a couple of the apps like fries, veggie burger wrap, veggie burger, veggie pizza and Californian pasta. The veggie burger was tasty, came with delicious cole slaw and pickles. We also ordered the pasta which came well well roasted veggies and garlic bread. We also HAD to try to poutine which yeah I know the gravy isn't vegetarian but shhhhh My husband has never had smoked meat but tried it and said it reminded him of corn beef but a little drier. He ate it all pretty quickly so it must have been somewhat enjoyable? The place was packed with locals when we arrived so it must be a local fave spot? I'm glad we tried it. read more

Dunn's is a CLASSIC restaurant/diner that serves the most amazing "smoked meat" and cheesecake! It's a MUST visit for anyone visiting the Montreal area. There's currently road construction in the area, but don't let that keep you away. read more

When in Montreal, you have to try their smoked meat. Dunn's is an old brand and the good thing about them is you can choose lean meat without extra charge. Takeout order took some time to be ready. The Smoked Meat Plate comes with 1/2 pound smoked meat, rye bread, fries, coleslaw and pickle. We upgraded the fries to Dunn's Poutine because why not! Personally I'm not a huge fan of smoked meat (too much salt), but this would be pretty good to share with others! read more

When you walk in you get a very traditional diner feel. We got seated pretty quickly and got the food pretty quickly as well. We got the Dunn's Famous Poutine, potato skins, and the smoked meat sandwich with fries. The potato skins and smoked meat sandwich were my favorites. They were good but I wouldn't say they were extraordinary. We ordered a very potato heavy meal so select carefully when you choose your dishes. The best part were probably the fries that came with the smoked meat sandwich. I would say my experience here was pretty decent. read more

Needed to obviously indulge in Poutine while in Montreal and Dunn's was an easy option close to the hotel that was open for 24 hours. The service was a tad stiff, but being that the place is open 24/7, I don't blame if the guy was tired. Had the french onion soup and the Montreal smoked meat poutine. Loved the french onion - it was delicious with the melted cheese and bread and a tasty broth. The poutine was great too. Crispy fries, delicious gravy and tasty smoked meat. All in all - a solid option for poutine in Montreal. It's just fries with gravy, after all. read more

Summary: If you're a tourist and looking to try poutine and smoked meat of Montreal, Dunn's is a great place to start! Prices are a little high as it is pretty touristy but food is yummy! Would recommend to give it a try if you're visiting Montreal for the first time like me. My husband and I both ordered the Small smoked meat combo (6 oz smoked meat sandwich, side of fries, coleslaw, and a half pickle) for $16.50 CAD. We both replaced the fries for poutine for an extra $4 CAD. Their smoked meat is well seasoned, but not as good as its competitors. The side order of poutine was pretty big and it was pretty good, although this was my first time trying poutine so I don't have much to compare it to. Like I mentioned in my summary, I would recommend Dunn's to tourists coming through Montreal and wanting to try the infamous smoked meat sandwich and poutine for the first time, but there may be better places for both. The wait staff was great and attentive. We visited on a Friday night around 5pm, beating the dinner rush. read more
Thank you fellow YELPERS for introducing us to Dunn's Famous! We arrived in Montreal after quite a delayed flight and were ravenously hungry lol and the fact that DF was open 24/7 made our decision so much easier. We walked over from our Hotel and were seated immediately and being that late it wasn't too crowded. Our server was warm and welcoming and made us feel comfortable from the get go. I came for their famous Poutine but on seeing the Chicken and Gravy Platter with the fries I was made in the shade lol The Wifey had the Pastrami Sandwich which she devoured and Dust had the Montreal smoked meat sandwich and Kev had the Dunn's Poutine and they loved their meals! I just wish we had more time in Montreal to come back here but we most definitely will when we're visiting again! read more

4.5. Second time coming on the way from/to nyc and overall just a very good experience. Can you compare the smoked meat to let's say Katz's in nyc? No, but the smoked meat sandwich is still very good. I like there are also a ton of options on the menu not just smoked meat. Service has always been great and you can tell everyone in there works really hard. Love that I always get a table without any wait. Our go to place for smoked meats when I want to relax at a table and not have to wait long or have to take away and eat in my car. read more
Dunn's initially wasn't in my plans. I have a list of restaurants that I want to try but most of the Montreal restaurants were outside of downtown, and I was needing something close to the Bell Centre. I was also craving poutine and after doing a quick search, Dunn's looked promising. It was really packed and I was fortunate to find a seat at the bar. I already knew what I came for but I quickly scanned the menu, just in case I saw something else that was appealing. I ordered their Dunn's Famous poutine. Being in Montreal, why wouldn't you get poutine with smoked meat? You'd be crazy not to honestly. Poutine is already good as it is. And Dunn's version is no exception. The fries were very tasty and perfectly cooked. Not too soggy or too crispy. Topped with a very delicious gravy and tasty cheese curds. But this version topped with smoked meat just went over the top. It was a huge portion you could probably get away with sharing it. But I was by myself so luckily for me I didn't have to share, but had the challenge of finishing it. If I'm ever back in town, I wouldn't hesitate returning. Their service was great. Checked this place while I was in the area and I love smoked meat but I much prefer Reubens. Came here in the afternoon, most of the restaurant was empty. Ordered the mini smoked meat sandwich with fries and requested no mustard on the sandwich. But guess what? Yes that's correct, the sandwich arrived with mustard. It wasn't even busy but somehow the chef still made an error. I couldn't even locate a server so I just ate it to correct the mistake and left disappointed. Oh and the smoked meat tasted more on the dry side as well so it wasn't that appealing. Left such a bad impression here. I wouldn't recommend especially with so many options for smoked meat in Montreal. Even if the restaurant is not busy, I think the servers still should be attentive to the customers that do decide to dine here. Sorry but I would not return. read more

Dunn's Famous is one of the few places in town that are open 24/7. I've never been! They're located next door to Dominion Square Tavern and have two other locations in town. We dropped in on a Monday (around 2:30am) and it was surprisingly busy. Our waitress was friendly and helpful for our massive group of 12. The menu is huge but I only had eyes on their smoked meat options. It's a given that you should try their speciality. - Le petit combo ($14.50) - small sandwich served on rye bread with fresh cut fries, coleslaw and dill. Small is an understatement; this is a filling meal. The sandwich was hefty with generous slices of smoked meat. Tender, fatty goodness; perfect after a late night out. The coleslaw was refreshing but the dill pickle was bad. The fries were okay but needed more time in the deep fryer. - Smoked meat fried rice ($14.00) - a fusion dish. There was smoked meat, bell peppers, mushrooms, broccoli and onions topped with diced tomatoes and shallots. Turns smoked meat was diced too finely but the tomatoes were refreshing to the palate. Decent. Solid late night downtown spot to grab food. Stick with the smoked meat sandwiches. 3.5 stars. read more

So. Much. Food!! I can't go to Montreal and NOT have smoked meat and poutine! We were here for the Grand Prix last weekend and had to stop in to Dunn's once again for our fill of deliciousness. We were seated immediately and the service was quick and efficient. I ordered the large smoked meat sandwich and upgraded to poutine. My husband got the Ruben and also upgraded to the poutine. Everything was so delicious and we received way more than we expected. This restaurant was recommended to me last year by a friend and it was so good we came back. It will definitely be a Grand Prix weekend staple! Love it. read more
I'm glad there's a restaurant that a family with kids can eat at that closes late in the heart of downtown Montreal. Although a little pricey like all other restaurants in downtown, they compensate their price with huge servings which can be shared with 2 people. They are part of a chain, where you can find other dunns restaurants in other areas. Salad - 3 1/2 stars - basic, but a whole big bowl full to be eaten as a meal or shared as a side salad. Smoked meat poutine - 3 1/2 stars - super huge serving of poutine, but was a bit too salty. Margarita - 4 stars - they make it sweet in Canada with a strong coconut flavor. Service - 4 stars - although only one waitress, food came decent time. Easy to find because we could see their huge vertical red lit sign from a block away, but because it's in the heart of Montreal, only street or paid parking lot around the area. Since we were staying at a hotel a block away, I'm glad they were open since most of the eating places in the area that open late were only bars. read more
When I'm Montreal a "must do" for all carnivores is a smoked meat sandwich and why not go to a place that been around for decades. "Dunn's Famous Smoked Meat Sandwiches" are famous not just because of the sandwiches but because they were the first to defeat the French language sign laws that attempted to replace all English language signs with French. The harm it would have done to change the name to boeuf Marine which is a term no one including the Franco-phones used would have been absurd. I ordered the classic smoked meat sandwich. You can't go wrong with that. Just be prepared to open wide. Enjoy! read more

I so want to give this place 5 Stars because my wife and I really enjoyed our time here. Our server was really friendly and helpful, my wife's Ruben was amazing! The only reason I can't give this review 5 stars is because Dunns is supposed to be known for their Poutine and Mine was awful. Maybe I should have got the original instead but it was soggy and very little flavor. Maybe just an off day. We will definitely be back to give it another shot. read more

Omg the Montreal smoked meat is as good as it gets here. The meat was moist and not overly salty, and I got the medium fat and it was perfect. Imagine if the corned beef and the pastrami had the perfect baby. It was that good. Service was good, and our drinks were refilled without asking. The poutine was good, but the smoked meat was even better... did I mention it was amazingly good? During our stay in Montreal, we tried 4 other places who supposedly had great smoked meats. I would come back to Dunn's in a heartbeat, and best of all... they are open 24/7 read more
From what I can see, Dunn's is a localized version of a TGIFriday's which is perfectly fine. They have several locations around Montreal and their claim to fame is smoked meats. Think New York style pastrami. Of course like a TGIFriday's, they have a ton of other menu items. This location also happens to be 24/7 - another plus. I don't especially enjoy breakfast foods, so a full menu restaurant at 8am is perfect for me. I was planning on getting Schwartz later for smoked meat (think Katz Deli) so I opted for an Uber driver recommendation of hot chicken. This isn't the Nashville version so don't confuse the two. It's essentially a shredded chicken sandwich drenched in Salisbury steak gravy and topped with peas. Be warned, not everyone will enjoy this sandwich. I personally did. It reminded me of childhood when I religiously ate microwaved HungryMan Salisbury steak TV dinners. The waitress was also very attentive. I'd come back again to try the rest of the menu. read more

Fast moving place. We arrived at 7:00PM and were seated immediately at one of the few remaining free tables. Service was fast and efficient. We went for some of the sandwich classics and poutine! We were served quickly and the neighboring table turn over was rapid. Dunn's is a classic Montreal dining experience! read more
