Smoked meat is another word for pastrami - but with a twist. That difference in flavor differentiates it from it's more famous cousin. But this place is amazing. The flavor of the meat was terrific. Honestly, we couldn't get enough. Even though our time in Montreal was limited we came back to this place twice. So good. FOOD: Like I said, delicious. You have to get the smoked meat even though they have plenty of other things. Of course you can get the classic poutine also - a Canadian classic. But you're here for the smoked meat. For sure. SERVICE: Good! Can't complain. People were very nice with us tourists and the portion sizes are huge. We had enough to take back with us each time. COST: Very good for the quality AND quantity. Totally worthwhile.
We came here for a late night dinner around 10. Thank God they were open or we would be starving. Even though it was late it was still full and it kept filling up with late diners and young people. I ordered fried rice, it was good I ate half of it it was a big serving for me and hubby ordered the sandwich and he liked it. The egg rolls were amazing as well. Our waiter was very attentive and our food came in a reasonable time. It's a casual place, plenty of tables and bathrooms are located downstairs.
We walked to Dunn's from our hotel, looking for a late night dinner of Poutine, and heard they had good smoked meat poutine. Although we read that service wasn't great, we decided to give it a try. The place was busy, but not packed. We were seated right away by an unfriendly host, which tracked with reviews. Our waiter came by and quickly took our drink order, and then we chose to order the smoked meat poutine. Drinks were delivered to our table, and we enjoyed those waiting for our poutine. There were a few games on the TV's around the bar, and the place had a fun atmosphere. Our poutine was delivered and Wow. There is a ton of tiny shredded pieces of the smoked meat atop our poutine with gravy and cheese curds sitting over the fries. The food was really good, we enjoyed the poutine. Our server never came back to check on us, we had to ask for the check, and there was no interaction with the staff even over the check. It really is too bad as we found the poutine to be very flavorful, the meat was melt in your mouth tender and had a very nice smoky flavor to it. We knew the service was going to be a hit or miss, just wanted to try the food. If you can overlook the lack of friendly service, the food was good.
I've really tried to give this place chance after chance, but it just keeps disappointing. This time I ordered the Club Roll, and honestly, it was nothing like the photos they show online or on Uber Eats. Instead of a stacked smoked meat sandwich, what I got looked more like ham, salami, or even bologna definitely not smoked meat. The portion was small and felt misleading compared to their promo pictures. A couple of months ago, I also tried their Louisiana potato soup with bacon, and it came watery with almost raw bacon thrown not slow cooked, not even crispy, just undercooked. Totally unappetizing. Their smoked meat sandwiches aren't much better. When they do give smoked meat, the slices are cut so thick that they fall right out of the bread and make it impossible to enjoy. The only positives: they're generous with the fries (if you're lucky enough to get them fresh and crispy), and the pickle and coleslaw are usually solid. But for a place that's supposed to be known for smoked meat, it's really disappointing that they can't seem to get the basics right. It sucks, because this is an iconic name in Montreal. but based on repeated experiences, I just can't recommend it anymore. I will forsure keep trying and hoping
What a fun casual place with good poutine. Our table looked like the twister game, I noticed other tables had other themes such as Pac-Man. We ordered poutine and an order of Fish and Chips and shared both between us. The poutine was excelled but the fish and chips were just OK. The service was friendly and although our food was served quickly, we ordered dessert and ended up cancelling the order because it took so long. I want to go back and try their smoked meat sandwich!
From start to finish this place was a mess. Our server weakly "greeted" us after we called out for acknowledgment. After being sat, we were met with with the rudest server I've experienced in Canada. He picked on my dining partner for not understanding the difference between two of the sandwiches. My dining partner - who is not even from the North American continent, speaks English as a second language, and has an accent that clearly demonstrates this - was unsure about open face versus not open face. Our server made a quip that was pretty rude and straight up ignorant, but he lacked self-awareness to figure that out. Now this terrible experience with 2 of the service staff barely factors into why this place gets one star. We were told that this place had great smoked meat. To my knowledge, smoking meat with particular wood gives it a very nice flavor and often times it is seasoned. I have had smoked meat in the American South as well as the Australian Outback and it is bombastically delicious. This is not funny, but I laughed at it. The food that he was served was a significantly smaller portion than mine, which is strange because he was rudely told that the only difference between the two sandwiches was that one had bread on top. Look at the photos and tell me if you spy the difference. We had some appetizers (the only reason this place gets more than one star) and they were mid, but they had something that the smoked meat didn't have: flavour! The smoked meat here is like wet sawdust. It tastes like nothing. It's not dry, which is good, but it doesn't taste like much of anything. It was simply terrible. My dining partner ate the food as a source of protein and sustenance and nothing more. He was appalled. What made this even more of a ridiculous situation is that while we were trying to eat our MDF-level meat scraps, our server decided to have a conversation with the table behind us and complain about the pro-Palestine protesters that day, saying that if they don't like it in this country, they should go back to their own. I get being frustrated about traffic being blocked, but spewing anti-immigrant sentiment creates for an uncomfortable dining experience in a city that gets any amount of tourism. For the service to be so bad, you would think that they would really step it up with the food so you could at least say "wow" at the end of your meal, but it was a shocking disappointment. With the double whammy of the bad food and not great server, I am flabbergasted at how this place is still doing business like this.
We tried Dunn's for the first time and the service was impeccably fast. The host was patient with us as well. Although we ordered take-out, the place had a nice ambiance with lots of seating. We got poutine as well as the smoked meat sandwich. We also ordered the Dunn's famous smoked meat poutine and the smoked meat burger. The smoked meat poutine was covered in smoked meat and packed with flavour. There was a perfect ratio of cheese curds to gravy to fries as well. The smoked meat burger did not quite live up to our expectations. The burger patty itself was dry and there was only a few slices of smoked meat. On the other hand, the smoked meat sandwich was great! Highly recommend. If you're ever in Montreal, definitely hit up this spot.
We had a bit of a wait on a rainy week day but luckily we were able to wait inside where they have a bit of space for a few parties to be seated. This is a lovely sit down restaurant. There is a small bar area with just a few bar stools if you prefer bar seating. A large U-shaped booth takes up the front window and would make a nice spot for a group. The menu here is extensive. Although they offer smoked meat, the menu runs from starters to dessert with a variety of salads, soups, poutine and pizza. Their sandwiches come with sides of fries, coleslaw and a pickle. Besides bar items, the offer coffee options, hot cocoa, milk shakes and sodas. The kids menu includes ice cream with each selection. We didn't have to wait too long to be seated at a table for two with a knee wall to one side and a large party on the other. The hostess left us with menus and flatware. The waiter took a bit to arrive and by then I had read over the menu, made my choice and had time to look around. This is a comfortable space with high ceilings, rich tones and several TV's around the room. The table, seats and floors were clean. Restrooms are in the back. The wait staff were in constant motion and although professional, none had any time to be chatty. Items were dropped off in a hit and run fashion as they tried to keep up with the crowds. My soda was served in a can, but I did see fountain drinks as well. It took a while for our meals to arrive. Served on a natural material basket with a paper liner I have to wonder how sanitary is that basket after a few meals served on it? Can they run that through the dish washer? Anyhow. I got the smoked meat bagel with swiss, lettuce and tomato on a Montreal Bagel. This was a very nice sandwich. Condiments are on the table if needed, but I enjoyed this as is. These Montreal Bagels make a very nice sandwich. My sandwich meat was very lean, but my SO's sandwich had one huge fatty piece of meat included with the lean meat. It looked like it has been cut off, put aside and then accidentally scooped up and added to the sandwich with the rest of the meat. He just pulled that off but you can see it in the photo. Some folks love a good fatty piece of beef so you might drool over it. Other than that, both sandwiches were very lean. His Le Petit Combo is a 'small' (plenty big) sandwich served on Rye w/fries, coleslaw and a pickle. Those pickles are tasty. Although very busy and with one obnoxious guest in the large group that even they clearly wished would go away, this was a pleasant dining experience. There are two famous smoked meat restaurants in Montreal. This one is older by one year. They each have different pro's and con's. Definitely try this one out.
Smoked meat poutine = the only way to kick off a trip to Montreal. Luckily our hotel was around the corner from Dunn's and we were able to make this happen as soon as we arrived. Dunn's is a casual spot - basically like a hybrid diner / deli. The menu had a variety of different types of sandwiches, poutine and grill food. Because Montreal is known for poutine and smoked meat we opted for a big bowl of poutine topped with smoked meat. This wasn't the best pastrami that I've ever had, but was still delicious and tasted great mixed with the poutine. I also ordered a crock of french onion soup which was topped with tons of cheese and had great flavor. Nothing better when the high is below zero degrees! We washed everything down with some cold Molson (okay, if you can't tell we were excited to be in Canada) and were in and out in under an hour. Overall, Dunn's is a solid pick if you want a fast hot lunch in Montreal. read more

It was around two pm in the afternoon on a Tuesday, we just arrived in Montreal and were craving poutine... we wanted to go to the best place and we definitely found it! We're planning on going again at least one more time... so many more poutine flavours to try out! read more

Poutine!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, so this wasn't the BEST I ever had but I still really enjoyed the poutine they served here. Let's put it this way, I liked it enough that I went two days in a row. That's also because I really liked their smoked meat sandwich platter ... which was just awesome. The meat was good and I actually enjoyed this more than Schwartz's. Yeah yeah call me crazy but I felt the meat here was more tender and juicy. As someone who's lived off Jewish delis pretty much most of my life in NYC, I guess there was just something about Dunn's smoked meat that seemed to fit my palate better. The service here was decent. It got kind of busy both nights I was here but the servers were all still attentive and checked on us to make sure things were okay. I was too pleased with my meal on both nights honestly to notice anything else ... so you get the idea. That's not to say you shouldn't visit Schwartz's. But if you're not near that area and you're looking for a good plate of meat and fries oozing with gravy and cheese curds and you happen to be in the downtown area ... you can't go wrong with Dunn's! read more

We headed to Dunns on a Sunday night because we heard it was a poppin place. It was about 9pm and only a few people were there. It felt empty and it sounded like the chef was screaming at an employee. I give it high marks though because the signature Poutine was insanely good and the wait staff were friendly and attentive. -casual atmosphere -The poutine is a must. This was my favorite poutine in Montreal! We had the basic poutine with cheese curds and gravy, I could not stop eating it! -If you are looking for a classic montreal meal and want a smaller portion. I suggest splitting the smoked meat sandwich and upgrade your fries to poutine. This is a perfect sized lunch for two people. -the smoked meat sandwich was just as good as Schwartz's without the long wait. This is something you must eat while in Montreal. -Our server was friendly and checked up on us an appropriate amount of times. -My only negative is that the tables are a little too close together. You can easily dive into the conversation of the people sitting next to you. read more
Stopped by here with a party of five to soak up some excess booze. Open 24 hours, this place was surprisingly quiet for a Friday late night, as we were easily able to get a booth. Wasn't looking for anything large, settling on the plate of Chicken Wings (8 for $9). Wings are fried well though not slathered with any sauce; instead you choose one to the side (decided on the sweet & spicy). Okay flavor overall, and the side of carrots/lettuce are nominal. Looking around, probably would have been better to get a poutine instead, Service is quick and the place is kept together well despite being an overnight establishment. read more

Thought this was a great place for no frills Montreal / Canadian food. This place is popular enough but without the insanity of lines. We stopped by early in the afternoon on a weekend and were seated immediately. I got their reuben smoked meat sandwich and subbed out the fries for poutine (+$4), which was 100% worth it. At this point in my trip, I still haven't had any poutine. I probably should have gone with the la petite sandwich because I could only finish about 3/4 of my meal. The poutine was great and just as good as I imagined it would be. The smoked meat sandwich was good but not as good as the one I had a day earlier at another restaurant. The bread was a little too dry around the edges, so I ended up peeling off the crust. Overall, a good value and place to stop by if you want something casual and local. read more
Dunn's Famous in Montreal, QC is known for their smoked meat Sammmies, poutine, and cheesecake. Our waitress was helpful and said it was a $4 up charge to add poutine to our lunch special. We ordered the smoked meat on a sesame bagel (best sesame bagel with sesames embedded). It also came with coleslaw and a pickle. The poutine was in a bowl and big enough to split, which we did. The fries, gravy, cheese curds had a good flavor. The smoked meat Sammie was tasty too. We also shared a small cup of their homemade cream of potato soup. It was creamy but had chunks of potato. Delish!! We sat outside and will definitely return when going back to good ol' Montreal!! Maybe we will try that famous cheesecake next time! read more

Great late night spot to go to! Hubby & I came here at 10pm. Luckily it was walking distance from our hotel (Hotel Bonevature), took us less than 10 minutes to get here. Once inside, we got seated fairly quickly. I also think it wasn't too busy since we came on a weekday night (Wednesday). The booths have cute little individual coat hangers you can use too! I ordered the French Onion Soup & Sausage Poutine. Hubby ordered the Smoked Meat Sandwich & Richard's Red Ale. The server was super nice & had asked if I want the soup to come out first, or to have all the food come out at the same time. I told him we wanted it all at on once. So all our food came out pretty quick, about 15 minutes or so. My favorite hands down was the French Onion Soup!! The cheese melted was on point & I absolutely loved the broth. I practically picked up the bowl to drink it, lol. The Poutine was good too, but personally I like the regular Poutine more (just cheese & gravy). My hubby really liked the Smoked Meat sandwich and his beer. He said the meat's texture was perfect and taste was awesome. It also comes with coleslaw & pickles & fries, yum! The servings are pretty big by the way, so we ended taking some of our food to go. Overall, great spot & would def return again! Good food, good staff , & good location. read more

The fries were good. The meat was good but compared to Katz Deli in NYC, it was okie. It was a lot of food so I was able to split it. It was our first meal there. Be sure to get the extra fat if you want it more meaty. read more

We were here really late night with hunger and we all feel satisfied after this meal. The location is good and close to train station. The French onion soup was surprisingly great. There were lots of veggies and Bacon adding in the poutines which we liked very much. The smoked meat taste decent and not too salty compared to smoked meat I had in other restaurant. read more

It's definitely been a while but we are starting our adventure in Montreal this time. Being I was hungry and just got into the city, I decided to stop by for a late night snack. The poutine selection was endless but I decided to get their famous poutine. The poutine came in a pretty big bowl with melted cheese and Montreal smoked meat sprinkled on top. I wish the fries were a bit crispier but this is one of those places where the cheese curds are actually melted. The flavor of the gravy was good but was slightly saltier than I expected. It was still very good though! To finish off the night, I tried their chocolate cake and strawberry cheesecake dessert. Both of them were good and I had a tough time deciding which was better. Being it was a bar, the staff were pretty laid back and I had to wave then over to take our orders. The staff were very friendly though. I shared my poutine and dessert with my girlfriend as there was no way I could finish by myself. For the amount of food they gave, 20ish bucks was a steal! In conclusion, I have other poutine places to try but they definitely make a mean poutine. Also the fact that it is open 24 hours you can sate your poutine desires at any time. Checked out this place on the 13th, I had the chicken honey mustard salad without chicken lol but it was actually soooo good! The amount of "toppings" added to the salad was awesome - most restaurant just give mostly lettuce and it's disappointing. My fiancé had the bacon cheddar burger with mushrooms and smoked meat poutine. He liked it and said he would rate it 3.5. I would give a 4. So overall for tonight's visit we give 3.5-4. read more
Stopped by on a recent trip to Montreal when I was craving a meal of smoked Montreal meat with a black cherry Coke. I ordered a small combo and upgraded my fries for poutine which cost an additional $4. The small combo is a sandwich with white bread and smoked meat, with side of coleslaw, pickle. Both the smoked meat and poutine were served steaming hot. I could only finish maybe a third of the poutine but managed to finish everything else! I was given 2 choices for the black cherry Coke, either can of Cott or on tap. The food is standard as Dunn's has now become a chain at multiple locations including Toronto. I arrived around 6:30pm and throughout the evening there were a steady stream of customers. I only saw about 3 servers but they were attentive and did not have to wait long after placing my order. read more

Great place for delicious food! I visited for 1 night from Toronto and chose the hotel down the street in order to visit this place. Arrived extremely late... at 3am.. and luckily Dunn's famous was a 3 min walk and open. I eat Montreal smoked beef ALL THE TIME and was extremely excited to try it IN Montreal! I tried the Dunn's famous smoked meat sandwich (asked without mustard but they put it in anyway... so that wasn't good.!). The smoked meat was UNBELIEVABLY DELICIOUS! So juicy, tender, hot and nicely marinated. With it i ordered the Dunn's famous poutine . It was a huge Poutine with the perfect cheese curds and the same delicious smoked meat on top. Yumm!! I also got a spicy crispy chicken burger ... very flavorful! And i got an extra crispy chicken patty and extra of their spicy mayo. I loved it! read more

If you are in Montreal and didn't order smoked meat were you really in Montreal at all?? Dunn's was not on our radar for list of restaurants to go to. We walked by on our way over for dinner at another place and saw the big red sign that said OPEN 24H outside of Dunn's. After another late night of shenanigans we quickly thought of Dunn's which was not disappointing at all. I ordered their Reuben sandwich served with sauerkraut and thousand island dressing, fries, coleslaw and a pickle spear. The meat was fatty enough that it melts in your mouth but not greasy that would make you sick. The portion was big I think big enough to share with someone if you aren't overly hungry. They are a bar style so the servers are a little more laid back easy and friendly to talk to. They are very attentive and will come around filling our glasses up with ice water. Another solid place for a late night munchie run if you're in the downtown area. read more

I've been trying the smoke meat restaurants downtown near where I work and I've been to Dunn's a few times but never wrote a review (since this was before I joined Yelp). I decided to stop by here recently during lunch. Closest metro to this place is Peel and the restaurant is located between Ste-Catherine and Rene Levesques area. When I went there, there was a terrasse in the front but I decided to sit inside. I went inside and was asked if I wanted to sit at the bar or at a table/booth. I decided to sit at the bar. I was given the menu and looked at the lunch specials. I was surprised that their lunch specials did not include any smoke meat sandwich plates. I decided to order a smoke meat sandwich (which came with the usual dill pickle, coleslaw, and fries) and just have water. I was asked whether I wanted lean or medium and I opted for medium. In the first place that I sat down in the bar which was directly in front of the draft beer dispenser, there seemed to be a lot of flies so I asked the server if I could change seats and she mentioned that it was fine so I decided to move to a few seats away. Within a few minutes, someone came with my order. The coleslaw was very good. The fries were very good as well. The smoke meat wasn't the type of smoke meat that I preferred since I like it to be a bit drier and "flakier" but it was good nevertheless. The place got very crowded very fast during my lunch. When I showed up at around 11:55am, the place was crowded (but not 100% full) and I was seated immediately. By the time I was about to leave (~12:35pm), there was a line of people waiting to be seated. I would rank the experience/food 3 stars. Service wise, I didn't get my water refilled during my meal and what type of deli or smoke meat place doesn't have a smoke meat sandwich in their lunch menu prices but has other things like fish & chips?!?! Most people going to a place like Dunn's Famous would be going for the smoke meat and not fish & chips or the other stuff shown on their lunch menu read more
