    Our darling boy from DCACC!
    Shannon M.

I volunteered here for several years, and overall this place was good. Most of the staff was very nice (there was one rather snappy lady who used to be at the front but I believe she is gone; not the best face for your organization!), and the place is clean. They had a renovation in the last year or so, which was good! It's not a big building, so some spaces are pretty cramped, like the adult cat room. The best part about this place is that we got our darling cat here, who is the joy of our life. :) We started by fostering, but it was clear that we were going to keep him, and he is a wonderful, sweet, and mellow addition to the family (though the shelter estimated his age as about 5 [he was a stray], and when we took him to a vet she said that he had to be at least nine...it's okay, older cats need love too!) The animals are well treated by staff and volunteers, and (unfortunately in a way) there are always new ones; check their website under "Available Animals" to see who's there! They get everything, not just dogs and cats but birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, etc. Overall, if you want a new pet, PLEASE consider adoption rather than breeders. All sorts of amazing animals come through here, and they will love you just as much!!

We truly owe a debt of gratitude from our family to the DuPage County Animal Shelter for helping our family through a tough time and saving our cat, Cookie! We were blessed to get the support of a vet who did something wonderful to save her life. Please consider donating to them and keeping them flourishing as they truly do a wonderful service to our community that we may not realize from time to time...so many of us love our pets and there are many animals out there that are benefiting from the support services provided by them. They are truly caring about what they do. Thank you so much for what you did for our family.

We adopted a lovely older kitten. My husband picked her out, we renamed her Lily. She's fitting in well with our other 2 cats. Everyone there was friendly and courteous. We even got a follow up email asking how everything was going. Never experienced that before, we loved sharing pictures and telling about our Lily. Definitely would recommend Dupage County Animal Services...they're the cats meow! LOL

Our family is composed of 2 adults, 2- 18 year olds, 1-14 year old. Because our oldest were heading to University the next Fall, our youngest and I went to three locations to adopt our furever friend. To set the stage, our beloved Buddy Cat had just crossed the rainbow bridge. We adopted Buddy from DuPage Animal Control in 2003. He was the best cat! Member of our family and dearly loved. When we were adopting Buddy, we brought our then twin 3 year olds with us. The staff was patient, positive and encouraging when they brought cats one by one into a separate room with us. The cat had to be able to tolerate rambunctious twins. Buddy immediately rolled on his back and our sons petted him--- not so gently. Buddy came home with us that same day. The process was easy. Complete two pages of paperwork. The staff took time with us giving us Buddy's back story and care instructions. There wasn't any hurry. The staff were caring, smiling and took our new family photo! Back to the present--- August 2017-. I reviewed the available cats for adoption on the website. Our then 13 year old son and I entered DuPage County Animal Control. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist. She asked what type of pet we wanted to adopt. A smiling volunteer brought us into the cat room. The room was clean, cages clean and appropriately sized, smelled fresh, had another volunteer feeding and watering the cats. We asked to see the three cats we viewed on the website. We played with each one a bit. Then my son noticed another kitty. Her name was Trish. She was 4 years old. Tiny, 4.5 pounds. Purr louder than a motor boat! She won our hearts. The volunteers and Staff were so excited and thrilled we had found our kitty love. Just as it had been 14 years ago when adopting Buddy, we brought Trish --- since renamed Opal-- home with us. Easy paperwork, attentive and friendly staff. For all the negative reviews, please take note, our experience couldn't have been better both times we've adopted from DuPage County Animal Control. We will continue to adopt from here as it gives animals the chance to live long, happy lives. As a side note, if you give up your pet to a "kill" shelter, they cannot promise to adopt out your pet. There are several "no kill" shelters. You can guarantee your pet will be adopted or adored by the staff. Here's our beautiful Opal

I adopted my cat, Cheryl, from this shelter. I saw her picture online and went in to meet her. I put a hold on her for 24 hours because they needed to get in touch with my landloard to make sure I was able to have a cat in my apartment; I appreciated the thoroughness. I went and picked her up the next day and took her home. The staff was friendly and efficient. They gave me some food, treats, and toys to take home for her. The only thing that I wish had been different was that she had quite a few mats in her fur that I had to brush/cut out when I got her home. They could have been from before she arrived at the shelter as some looked pretty old and she was only in the shelter for about a month.

Our happy, healthy kitty one year later.

I wanted a place that was safe, welcoming, and patient with little hands that move with big enthusiasm. St. Sophia's was exactly that. From day one, they made us feel included and valued, and they treated my daughter like a real part of the team. What started as simply wanting to help quickly turned into something much bigger. Before we knew it, we took home our first foster kittens... and then our second... and then our third. Fostering became such a meaningful part of our family routine, and we loved watching these tiny lives grow and eventually go to wonderful homes. We ended up adopting one of our foster kitties. After that, we became even more involved, helping with events, supporting the shelter however we could, and becoming part of the heart of the organization. St. Sophia's truly cares about their cats, their volunteers, and their community. They're compassionate, knowledgeable, and they make it easy for families to get involved in rescue work. If you're looking for a place to volunteer, foster, or adopt, this is the place. I'm so grateful we walked through their doors.

And then a year later, almost to the day, my parents were like "hey let's go to Adopt" the day after Thanksgiving and they ended up getting a cat (their second) for themselves. I haven't been back to the shelter since 2013 when I went with them when they decided to get their cat, but at that time the shelter was super nice and they had several rooms where cats could roam free. It was a nice, no-stress situation to be able to sit on a sofa or on the floor and have the cats come check you out. So many snuggles. Although it is a small shelter, they're very meticulous and take really good care of the cats. Each feline is "vetted", receives their shots, and is spayed or neutered before being adopted, so all of the medical necessities are included in the adoption "fee" (which makes it quite the bargain). All cats are screened for parasites and other ailments such as FIV and FIP (which is something that many pet stores do not do... a very sad lesson that a friend of mine learned the hard way) and are monitored for a period of time before being made available for adoption. There is a small army of dedicated foster parents and volunteers that care for the cats, making sure they are healthy and their personalities are suitable for being adopted, before they are moved into the "cattery" for viewing and, hopefully, adoption. The cages and litter boxes are cleaned and disinfected several times a week, and the cats are offered lots of time out to play and interact. There is such a sense of security when looking to adopt an animal from C.A.R. because you never have to worry about illness beyond a little winter cold (yep, cats get colds, too!) This is also a no-kill shelter. And unlike some places, you will never find the "it's just a cat" attitude here. The adoption process might seem a bit off-putting for those who are used to pet stores who will sell any animal to literally anyone without question, but C.A.R.'s goal is to make sure that everyone involved... both your family and the cat... will be happy. After all, adopting an animal is a commitment, and fates willing, you will have your pet for many, many years! They're very good about making sure that the cat's personality (shy, dominant, skittish, friendly, etc.) is right for your family and your home (single- or multi-cat home, families with or without children, families with or without dogs, etc.) The comfort, health, and safety of the cat is paramount. As I mentioned, we've adopted three cats from C.A.R. All three have been amazing... 100% litter-trained, healthy as horses, and absolute angels, with completely different personalities! Our lives are so much more complete with our little furbabies, and we really can't thank C.A.R. enough for taking such good care of them while they waited to come home.
