I stopped in here during a business trip to Boston. It was highly recommended by some locals whom I had met as a great dive type bar. I didn't know anyone walking in but made friends quickly and the staff were friendly. Will definitely come by when in town again. This would be my favorite steakhouse in town if they did steak! They do what they do well. The limited menu is simple and filling very tasty as well and affordable. Beer is cold! They have a friendly staff, regulars, and are gem of a find the the outoftowner! I was lucky enough to stumble in and find an old college buddy working here! Dirty Nelly's is a bar in the historic area of Boston, very neat little bar. We stopped in for a beer while walking the bricked streets in the North end of the city. I just love to see old places and think about how they were used years ago. Service was good, but the kitchen was closed for the evening. This place is neat to check out if you are walking by! I walked into this place after wandering though their entrance door that looks like an shady alley entrance. As we walked in buddy commented if were going to get mugged or not. I told him 50/50. Place inside is cool. Small, but if your are looking for a chill place after work, it is ok. Looking out the window as Hay market vendors peddled their products, my mind drifted off as I wondered oh where oh where do these items come from? Are they old? Are they legit? Did they fall off the back of a truck? The journeys a Hay Market item must travel before it arrives at the market must be an interesting one. Anyway, back to the review. Worst service and bartender is very condescending. I said 'Excuse me?' and asked for a beer while he was chatting with a customer and he ignored me first then told me to wait while he keeps chatting with the customer. As a travel nurse roaming a new city on my own I stumbled upon this little gem. The bartenders immediately made me feel comfortable and safe. They keep an eye on my beer when using the restroom and protectively hover when overly friendly (read drunkin idiots) try to engage. Over time this has become my 'townie' spot and I am so grateful for the friendships, conversations and yummy beers I have had during my 3 month stay. GO TO THIS BAR! Down an abandoned farmers Market just passed the frozen side walk (seriously, who hoses down side walks when the temp is below 30!?!) is an intimate little dive. Friendly Nicholas, manning the taps and keeping the ladies well liquored up adds to the ambience. A few tvs, lots of Irish flare and napkins with drawings on the wall. A great time at a very reasonable price. read more

Durty Nelly's has its charm. It's so small... I love it. The bartender I felt I had to strong arm. So crowded couldn't find a place to sit. The drink's price was somewhat fair. Their music choice was badass. McGregor's scotch was good by a hair. Don't wanna drink more or I'll get crass. read more

OK I'm old and i've been coming here since it was pete's pub. I found it while taking a leak in Alley 102 20(?) yrs and a million brain cells ago. Plus the $1 beer sign immediately caught my attention. WOW u couldn't get in b/c u were too drunk??????? that i'd like to see seeing the condition of most of the crowd i travel with. We didn't know it had a front door for about 4 yrs. Yes the upstairs bartender is an iron pumping gel haired guy. I was so drunk I was gelling my hair w/ Smithwicks Ale (which he gave me in a small glass) and giving him shit about his hair and i didn't have a problem. got hit by a car after leaving and ended up in Mass Gen with beer gelled hair. they were some impressed. i was so drunk the hospital threw me out. But that was just one night! I lost my All Blacks hat and a pair of gloves and someone turned them in and when i came back two months later he took them out from behind the bar. so in my book he's a great guy and has never shut any of us off. Now the music is a different story - but all we've have had to do is ask for something and the DJ (can they really b called DJs anymore if all they do is push a button?) We were going from playing air guitar on Highway Star - to singing (?????) Patsy Cline songs. We are a very eclectic bunch. The upstairs is small so imagine what it was like the night we were doing beer and sambuca and decided we knew how to swing dance. Just about everyone up there was trying after we knocked over the first table. The down stairs has always been more mellow and we were only in there for a short time until they opened the upstairs since it changed over. The drinks are still the cheapest in that area. It gets a mixed crowd lots of hardcore drinkers right after work and the weekend crowd. It still seems to get people trying to get more bang for their alcohol dollar. If the upstairs is open on Sat aft. sit in the window and watch the Haymarket circus. Last couple of visits we've run into people who hadn't been there for years who came to get cheap beers at Pete's. It is on a lot of peoples fond memories of "where we killed brain cells" list. The character and cast of characters at Pete's/Nelly's has changed over the years but it still has plenty of character(s). You take it for what it gives you on a given day. I'll be back this weekend - the biggest drawback since the change - they didn't have Ballentine Ale. Oh and not that i care but the woman say their bathroom is now clean. read more

This is a great dive bar which opens earlier than the neighboring establishments. They serve great local beers on tap. Ryan the bartender was very helpful in providing local restaurant tips. If you want a divey place with a lively atmosphere, with cheap prices, this is a great pick. It's one of the more non-descript places in the alley along Freedom Trail (an alley my girlfriend affectionately dubbed "Diagon Alley"...er, "Diagonilly"). It is as nondescript as they come, but what drew us in was the fact that they were the only place in the alley without a ridiculous cover charge on Saturday night. In fact, they had no cover charge. Lil whole in the wall with creepy back entrance! Bar back was a bit rude, not inviting at all. Greeted us with can't go upstairs,its closed to a private party. So we took our seat at bar,lower level but didn't greet us. Took bartender about 5min to make his way and take our order. I got the the Tully Special for 10bucks. Tully,an IRISH shot,with a surprise beer which was a bottle of Miller Lite. Hubby stuck to the Samuel Adams,$8 on tap. Yes,small lil place with great 80smusic. The patrons were not all locals,which made it easier to hang out and sing along. So there sat me and hubby from Cali,1 Rhode Island man named Tom~ 20yrs living in Boston but is not claiming to be a Bostonion,lol. A young gal from Memphis, about to move there for a GM job at a new restuarant named Roccos, an Irish man name Mikey, in Boston opening up his mens clothing store in the Shopping Mall in Quincy. Yes we sat there that long and I got their life stories,lol. That's why I stayed and continued to hang there,good music,great folks at bar,and drinks prices were very reasonable. I seen they had shirts,honestly wish they had displayed for purchase. But since bartendar was a 1man show with 30 or less people no way was I gonna ask for bar back guy to help. He eventually opened up for quick interest in our conversation when I was showing my lil Tajin bottle and explaining what a Michelada was to the Irish man. He then shared that they use Tajin for their drinks something similar to a margarita but with vodka vs tequila. Horrible bar. I usually love dives, but the employees are rude and annoyed at life. The place is dirty and had the STRONG smell of urine. The place was basically empty at 9pm and you're rude to the 5 people who walk in? I was waiting for an additional friend to meet us there and walked toward the back to see if he was there. A staircase led upstairs and a bouncer/security guard/d-bag said "private party upstairs" with an absolutely horrible angry attitude. Empty bar with a "private party" upstairs? You're full of it. Plus, he reeked of alcohol. Awesome that their employees are drunk on the job. The bartender was no better. Rolling of the eyes and a lot of sighs. For beers? I stumbled into this place after a few glasses of wine and a night of improv. Since I had already been drinking wine, I decided to continue with it, even though this place definitely isn't a wine drinking place. Big mistake! After a few sips, I couldn't take it anymore, so I asked for a different glass. The bartender was super cool about it and flat out said they just don't have good wine really. So he let me get a mixed drink instead. He was really helpful throughout the night, and when we wanted to get some food he suggested we go to Blackstone since they have a very limited menu. The atmosphere is cozy, and since it's tucked away a bit, it's not as crowded as other bars in the area. The drinks weren't very expensive, especially considering it's in the Faneuil Hall area. I would definitely say it's one of the pubs I prefer in the area! read more

I went to Durty Nelly's bar with my housemates on a night that there was live Irish music. It sounded pretty fun. This place is small. I guess you can say it's cozy and quaint, but I didn't get the best vibe from this place. The bartender wasn't that nice. I tasted their signature beer on tap and I thought it tasted like Miller/Bud light. I was pretty disappointed. I liked that they had Guinness Harp and Guinness Stout on tap, but that was really all they had. This isn't the worst bar I've ever been to, but it's definitely not the best. I would give it 3 stars, but this experience wasn't all that memorable and the beers weren't that cheap. For someone who isn't a regular chum here, this place isn't too inviting or cozy. read more

On a recent trip to Boston this was, hands down - my favorite place to hang out. We found it while touring the North End, (I looked across the street and said "Hey! I like the sound of that place!") the next day we wandered in at 3:30p.m. and didn't leave until they were closing the place down. Matilda is awesome, the music on both Sunday and Tuesday (ya, we went back 3 times over the course of the week) was perfect and if I lived in Boston I'd be holding up one end of this bar a ridiculous amount of time. OK i'm not a fan of Dive bars on vacation, but I get it. My buddy said that this was what a true Irish Pub is like, unlike me he's been there. Very small and kinda durty. We were two of the six people in the place(it was early), so I imagine with a crowd it gets better. A must see though if visiting and bar hopping as we were. I give Durty Nelly's a five star review. But before you gather your friends and head on down, realize this is 100% a dive bar. If you're a fan of dive bars this will quickly become your favorite. In general, the staff is friendly, unless you're obnoxious. They will quickly but the kibosh on your bad behavior and make you feel pretty unwelcome. That's a GREAT thing from my standpoint. I don't need the bartender to be my best friend, I just need them to provide fast, efficient service and if they want to be rude to the douchbag next me, more power to them. This bar is small (cramped you might even say). Its dirty, or should I say "durty" and you won't find anything unusual on the menu. But thats exactly why you're here now is it? It's the standard beer selection at affordable prices, the dim lit atmosphere, the rag tag team of barmates, and the feeling that you've come across one of Boston's best kept secrets that keeps you coming back for more. read more
