After standing in line for probably 45 minutes on St. Patrick's Day, I was really hoping this place would be worth the wait. We were told to go to the downstairs bar since it was pretty crowded and they had some space there. After waiting outside for so long in the cold, we wanted Irish coffee to warm up. Sadly, they don't brew coffee here. So I got a whiskey and coke and was hoping they had food specials but all they had was a corned beef sandwich (I don't eat beef so this was a no-go). While everyone seemed to be having a great time, I wasn't that impressed. The drink wasn't really worth the wait and it was disappointing that we couldn't go upstairs where they had live music. I'm not sure how it is on a normal day but for St. Patrick's Day, I would recommend going elsewhere. The one good thing about it though is that it was one of the few places that wasn't charging a cover. read more

I've had some very mixed experiences with this place. Before I go into detail I have to say this place is in a prime location. It is right by the Faneuil hall bars which makes it a great spot to start the night at. Now for the bad experience. The first time I ever came here, the bar smelled so horribly of vomit/piss that I was absolutely shocked anybody was in there. The floor was incredibly sticky and it was just a very depressing atmosphere. They advertised a $10 beer and shot special that consisted of a bottled miller high life and some watered down shot of whiskey. Figured I would not be back anytime soon. However, I did go back about 9 months later, and found this experience to be much better. I ordered Glorious by Lord Hobo brewing company on tap and was shocked by how good the draft was. In the many times I have had this beer, I've never had such a fresh, pillowy, and juicy draft. The beer was such a hit that everyone I was with bought multiple rounds of it. The stench from my previous visit was no longer there. The atmosphere was much better this time as well, and we even checked out the upstairs section. Don't let the name fool you because this place isn't much of a dive bar. It's just as expensive as most Boston bars. However, my good experience here gives this place the Big Congus stamp of approval! read more

Its been an Irish bar for only a decade or so. So don't get too caught up in the "authentic" rustic feel. The bartender didn't have the welcoming attitude mentioned. But maybe it was an off night. Guinness on draft was on point though!!! read more

Came for a quick lunchtime beer. Stayed for plenty more. And a Red Sox game. Initial impressions were of a dive-with-a-regular-crowd - and a barman with the right sort of attitude... for a dive-with-a-regular-crowd. But like proper dives-with-regular-crowds everywhere, outsiders seem to be welcome... as long as they play by three simple rules: (1) get shit-faced; (2) tip adequately; and (3) enjoy the banter. I practically do not need to write a review because I do not need others to locate this area and take away from the jewel that it's. My buddy and I set out last night for an experience, and following a disappointing walk through the North End where we located high-priced eateries, Filthy Nelly's appeared amongst the Haymarket consequences. Durty Nelly's is tidy, friendly, and plays superb music. The bartender, Matilda grinned as she said, "I run a tight ship around here. Everyone has interesting." What a opinion! I rarely do reviews, but I had to for this place because of such a bad experience. I would give less than one star if I could. My friend and I decided to stop here for a beer after a delightful dinner at Lucca's. My friend started playing with a dog at the bar and then asked the bar tender for a beer. We had been in the bar less than 15 minutes. The bar tender refused to serve her and said she had too much. If two glasses of wine during a four course meal is too much then I'd like to know what they do about their regulars who sit at the bar sloshed after God knows how many hours minus the food. I came in here for the first (and last) time at around 11:30 at night with my boyfriend and our female friend. We arrived after having ONE cocktail each and a good deal of food over in Faneuil hall. The other two ordered their drinks with no problem, and since I had no cash, I figured it'd be convenient to start a tab. I got my drink, ask to start a tab, and what does the bartender say? "Nope, you're all done." Excuse me, did I just get cut off while completely sober? Yes, yes I did. I'm guessing it's because I laughed at my friend who is eccentric and naturally has an odd laugh. Only schwasted people do that, duh. It didn't immediately occur to me what he meant, because in whose world should I have gotten cut off? Your policy on ID is discriminatory against people not from the US. My husband and I came in on Saturday and were not served because he didn't have his passport. I do not understand why a driver's licence was not sufficient proof of age. Can you explain why this is? He has lived in this country for months and this has never been a problem anywhere else. Surely you wouldn't expect a US citizen to carry their passport on them for ID purposes at all times, so why discriminate because we are British? read more

Durty Nelly's is a fraud. It's not a real dive bar. It is owned by the Somers Corporation. They own about a dozen restaurants and bars in the area. Dive bars are supposed to be owned by dysfunctional degenerates who lack the business accumen and resources to maintain and operate them properly - Not multimillion dollar corporations. The service is salty, which is common with "real" dive bars, however THIS IS NOT A REAL DIVE BAR. I wonder if there's a corporate handbook given out to new bartenders demonstrating how they should be rude to customers in order to keep up this phony facade of a divey place. I have been to Durty Nelly's before and had ordered some appetizers which never came. After about an hour we inquired about our order to find nobody made our food. As agrivated as I was they rectified it and the staff was apolagetic and helpful. I decided to go back today for a quick beer on a Monday afternoon. Five dollars for a Bud light Draft, the young bartender was completely rude for no reason and treated us like we were scum. Nothing special about this dump to justify ever going back. I am a very pleasant customer and a very generous Tipper but today I was so aggrivated I left no tip. Please do yourself a favor avoid this place. Show up on an off-night and get to know the bartenders and staff, who are all good people. Sunday nights has the bonus of hosting Mike Barrett, Boston's foulest and most-loved but oft-misunderstood entertainer. Greg will take good care of you at the bar, and Nick will guide you carefully to the door when you've passed your limit. Busy nights bring the smell of vomit to the single bathroom (and the floor outside if it's a long line). It's only a little bigger than the Littlest, so take that into account. Really great watering hole in the north end area. The name makes it even more unique and their draft selections are pretty good also all capped off with Guinness. While we didn't try any food they appear to serve some of the typical pub fare. However there are some really top shelf restaurants within a 5 min walk so I would recommend mend Nellys for the drinks and then move on to food elsewhere. read more

Great lil pub. Good selection of booze and a nice crowd. Definitely worth a pit stop for a pint of Guinness after walking the freedom trail.

I'll give this place four stars for making a fun night at Avenue Q turn into a bizarre and hilarious night at the bar. The bartender, first of all, was great. The beer selection -- hey, if there's Newcastle on tap, this girl is happy. It's pretty tiny inside, but we found seats quickly and, it turned out, never had to purchase a beer. Why? I think we were the only two girls in the place that weren't with guys. Add to this the fact that my voice sounded like Doris from "The Critic" that night, owing to a worsening cold, and it was just ... ridiculous. Sometime early on, my drinking companion told the men we were sitting with that I taught sex ed to school kids, so I ended up spending most of my night concurring with a twenty-three year old Danish sailor as to the importance of sex ed. Perhaps you have not had the delight of meeting me, but normally my voice is reasonably high. So ... me sounding like Kathleen Turner on eight packs of unfiltered Camels, talking, despite the language barrier (not in general, but in some of the specific terms), with a visiting Navy man ... it was a pretty weird night. Plus I got hit on during the train ride home, which is always strange. Remind me to lose my voice more often. To summarize, good bar, strange but good crowd, good beer. read more

This place sucks so bad. They won't accept Canadians. We showed the bar tender multiple IDSs and would still not accept us. I felt unwelcome and the man at the door was not nice. Wandered into this place with a large group after dinner at the North End. The female bartender was very friendly, and directed us upstairs since there were no seats available. Bartender upstairs was very friendly too! This place is small, but it is cute and comfortable. I bought a round of 6 drinks--3 beers, 1 wine and 2 Absolut and tonics---only $24! I haven't seen a round that cheap since the 80s. Bathrooms are very clean too. I would definitely come back again for drinks when hanging near Quincy Market. read more

This was a favorite dive bar for a long time when it was Pete's Pub. It lost the feeling of that. I still enjoy going here. It's definitely cleaner and now has a nice homey feeling. It's normally pretty laid back with a lot of regulars. I've yet to have a bad time or get cut off! read more

Thanks to Yelp, I found Durty Nelly's for a quick, cheap beer. I didn't realize 'til I stepped inside that on my first ever visit to Boston, I came here to watch the Lakers beat the Celtics in game 7 of the NBA Finals. We sat in the corner quietly rooting for the Lakers, and left early just in case it got too crazy. This last visit was much quieter and I enjoyed the attentive service. Location is convenient as it is walking distance to the train station. We just grabbed a quick beer before heading back to the hotel. Around $26 for 5 beers? Yes, please! Wish they had something to snack on while enjoying beer. read more

Update: I got a message from someone that said they were the manager (on 2/5) and they apologized for what happened on New Years Eve. Bottom line: i think they're racist because they refused to serve me for no good reason. Some time after 10pm on New Years Eve I walk in with a friend (a professor at Tufts), also Hispanic. She has a hot chocolate with her (it was cold out after all) and they tell us she can't bring it in. She gives up the hot chocolate to the bouncer, they check our IDs, and let us in. She then tells the bouncer let me get another sip before you throw it out so he gives her the drink, she takes a gulp, and gives it back to him. We find a table and as I'm about to take off my coat to sit down the bartender -- a shorter, blond guy, maybe mid 30's -- tells me I'm not serving you guys. You drank coffee you can't get served. I didn't even have a coffee, my friend did, and she gave it up. I stood there at the bar ready to explain but he wouldn't even acknowledge my presence. He would just walk by and ignore me without even looking at me. At that point I was inclined to leave and not give him my business but my friend hasn't been exposed to as much of this shit as I have so she goes right up to the bar and says I gave up my coffee and he tells her again that he's not serving us and adds that she gulped it and he doesn't know if there was whiskey in it or not. It was all bullshit of course he just didn't want us in there. At that point we left. Needless to say I will never go to Durty Nelly's again. I'm also going to seek legal counsel. This is frigging 2013 not 1913 and it isn't going to cut it. If you don't approve of this kind of treatment, I suggest you try the other pubs in the area. They were nice to us over at J.J.
