This is such a great dive bar! After going barhopping with a friend, this was definitely my favorite bar of the night. Decided to try this place out and was very disappointed. The receipt should $9.75 for a 3 liquor cocktail but I'm pretty sure that all I got was just plain fruit punch and no hint of alcohol. I don't understand why some bars do this. Sure they think they can save money by ripping visitors off but they don't seem to understand that if they would just make the drinks right then they would get more business. There is such a chill atmosphere to this place and the staff are super friendly. I only went here for 1 drink after leaving another place, and it wasn't too busy around 1am on a Friday. I was with 3 close friends and we were able to talk and hear each other without shouting. Spend your $ elsewhere. We went there the morning of the Sept 27th and the large, male white bartender was a jerk and flat out unfriendly, disrespectful. Nobody else in the bar except an older man who was very kind. The bartender did not respond positively to our warm greeting and acted entitled to his job. Complained about having to work "9-5" and did everything to avoid having to serve us a drink. I cannot help but think that the owner must be a family member, etc. Cannot imagine keeping such a rude, unfriendly and disrespectful employee working. Bartender acted entitled as if he could be as disrespectful as possible and nobody would care . All the other bars AND their staff in the immediate area were great! Oh, Nelly, how you've eluded me! I've lived in Boston for nearly four years and have yet to find a spot that agrees with me. I'm not the one for "franchisey" bars that play Top 40 or have beautiful patrons. I like local character, and this bar offers up plenty. Plus, it's not intimidating to go into if you're alone. There are bars...and there are pubs. Durty Nelly's is a shade away from an authentic Irish pub (although it did have TV's in there, which somewhat violates true pub tenets). It's as close as you'll get to a true "dive" in the innards of downtown Boston. The bartenders are authentically Irish, which was a huge plus for me as I'm Irish and get annoyed when you go to "Irish pubs" without any bloody Irish working in them. Lovely little pub with an entrance tucked away off an historic cobblestone alley. The people seemed pretty Irish, that or they were just drunk, but all friendly, baring affordable beer and delicious fried mozzarella. A charming fireplace adorns one wall and a cool basement bathroom down some spooky stairs lends an old world flavor. This place was loud, gross, and filled with questionable characters and offbeat decor. I loved it. The bartender gave me exactly what I came for- a stiff drink. One thing I really like was that when my fiancé asked for a drink eying up a different bottle of bourbon, the bartender, rather than just selling the drink, eyed him up and said if you want bourbon that's not it. I had a great experience there as usual. They got rid of Jack Daniels so all you can get is Dickel. Shots of Dick, Dick in a mix or dick on the rocks. Can tell the difference between Dick and Jack. They have a special entire spice rack that is used just for Bloody's with 10 different spices and sauces added!! TEN!!! And it blends together perfectly!! Every bartender is very personable and welcoming, and I've met most of them. Wednesday nights they have some great live irish music, otherwise its up to the bartender's playlist and they keep the mood elevated and fun. Its really a great spot where regulars and tourists come to meet, great people watching inside as well as outside, and a quaint little patio in the historic alley out back. I was looking for a divey bar when I happened to come across this place. It was everything I was looking for to get out of the rain and to get off my feet after a long day of being a tourist.
