If you want to go back in time and experience the early 90's dutch bakery is the place for you. This might not sound like a compliment but it truly is. The 90's embodies friendly and speedy service along with great quality ingredients of home-made honest to goodness type of food. It's not the busiest place for dining in which makes for great conversation over a cup of coffee and a hearty breakfast of eggs, sausages, toast and hash browns. The real treat behind dutch bakery is of course their bakery items! I am transported back to my childhood every time I take a bite of their classic "deer leg" sweets in the cookies and pastries edition of course. One with a crunchy nutty exterior and one with a plain crispy outside. The wellington cookies are similar without the cream if you're not a big fan of cream but if you are then the hazelnut cookies are where it's at. Their cookies aren't a traditional sense of a North American cookie of course, hence the "dutch" bakery part so make sure to go out and try these delicately delicious treats. read more

Bought two of Dutch Bakery's almond croissants at Sidney Street Fair. Huge disappointment--almost no almond flavour, no detectable almond paste, sticky icing and a mass of flavorless flaky pastry. Visiting Victoria and staying in the downtown corridor. Ran across this lovely vintage bakery. My husband and I went in looked in at the displays and we were sold. We were going to have our continental breakfast here. Sign to seats said seat yourself. We did. When we arrived there were only 3 other tables filled. One waitress handling everything. Her name is Chelsea. She was awesome and had this awesome flow about her. Almost like a dance. As the time past, tables began to fill up. She was greating everyone and making a point to get to each table. There must be 16-18 tables in the place. Never seen anything like it. We ordered an apple slice similar to apple Strudel and Dutch Cake. They were very good had a lot of flavor. I am not a fan of marzipan but the Dutch cake was good even though it did have the marzipan in it. Everything we had was made on site. It was a great start to our morning! This is such a great, old-timey bakery and coffee shop! We had the early bird breakfast special (2 eggs, 3 pcs bacon, 2 slices toast, hashbrowns, and tea/coffee). All is good. Notable that they offered rye bread for toast, yay. The hashbrowns are more like potato chunks, but they're fried. So it's like eating crispy fries in a chunk format. Really notably good. Cause my favourite footy player (from Holland) #4 plays for my favourite team - Liverpool. Now if only they could win games of late! Dutch Bakery & Diner is a classic spot with an old school (& I mean really old) feel. Lots of cakes, cookies and chocolates & other delightful Dutch treats on display. There is seating in the back of the bakery for ordering food - noticed it was mostly a 'geriatrics' (aka ol folk) crowd dining in. I played it safe & went with custard treats. If a bakery can't get custard right then they should close shop period. DB&D were on point with my - Strawberry Custard Filled Croissant. I had bought 3 items in total but gosh I swallowed them so fast I forgot what the other 2 items were!? Just know that they went down the hatch nicely. Everything tasted fresh & #yummylicious - the custard passed the taste test. Going strong for the past 65 years & counting, must mean somethings working for this Dutch bakery, especially when you have competition right next door at Crust Bakery. I have not been to this bakery in decades It brings back sweet memories from my childhood. It was my grandma's favourite bakery in the 60s. It's an iconic place in Victoria. I was gifted their assorted cookies which were pretty tasty. My favourite was the ginger cookie. If you like ginger, this is a must try. Was planning on documenting my meal, but only got one picture of my tea pot (which I found particularly adorable) because I was absolutely swept away but this homey classic diner. Came here 2 days in a row for the mini breakfast and almond danish with tea. Perfect combo. A solid eggs, toast, potatoes and very fresh tasting sausage links. Managed to get in early enough the second day that my danish was still warm! Cant say enough good things about this treasure. It's obviously been here so long for a reason and withheld its reputation, due to the many recommendations I received from locals to go here. If all of that hasn't convinced you, maybe the cases of chocolates and fresh baked sweets will. How about a server that remembers your order and drinks! It's been a while since I've posted a review but I felt the Dutch Bakery and Coffee Shop deserved all the praise I could give them. We were undecided on where to grab a good breakfast that wasn't 95% sugar (we waited until after our mains) and while searching on-line came up with this place which was only a couple of blocks from our hotel. The service was incredible. Our waitress was making sure no one had to wait for everything. She was on top of everything and made us feel like a regular (After our experience, I wish we were so we could come back more often). The food and service was top notch and I would highly recommend it to everyone, local or tourist alike. I bumped into this place on my way to Crust bakery and I am so glad I decided to go here instead. After a long morning walk, I wanted to grab something to bite and get coffee and decided to go to Crust bakery, however Crust bakery was very small and didn't have proper seating so I decided to go here instead. They have a bakery up front and a diner style restaurant further back. I went to the restaurant and a very nice old lady served coffee and helped me pick the right Danish for me. I also ordered some breakfast. I enjoyed my breakfast and pastries and loved being here. The decor is old but homey. This was a random find but turned to be absolute delight. read more

I've only ever had the lemon cream pie from here, but it is literally my most nostalgic food item from childhood and I reminisce about it all the time. Since I don't have the chance to visit Victoria all that often, I feel like every time this pie is such a treat. I could eat an entire pie. Such a buttery aromatic crust with the most delightful lemon cream, very zesty but not sour at all, and sweet to the extent that I get the dessert shivers but not overwhelmingly sweet. Also tastes amazing when stored in the freezer. Honestly just writing this review makes me sad that I can't get this pie every day. read more

Poor customer service ... asked for two ginger cakes , received two almond cakes ....went back after going home to exchange them , received one burnt and undersized ginger cake, one normal, no apologies . Had just stepped out the door when I noticed and asked politely if I could exchange the undersized burnt one and the grouchy employee said no , it had left the store (for three seconds ). Very poor . As an owner myself of a retail store , and especially in this case where the customer was correct (I showed her the two cakes side by side and she admitted one was half the thickness of the other ) , this is so poor. So check you have been given the correct item before you leave the store, and do not expect them to do what would be reasonable . read more

We've been here a few times and tried many pastries because it looks so cute, but unfortunately none of the desserts was tasty enough for me to want to eat it again. The last cake I got, the mocha cake, tasted bland and stale at the same time so I threw it out. The porcupine was not bad, but it was overwhelmingly sweet that I couldn't eat it. Walking into this coffee shop and bakery was totally random. As we made our way through Downtown Victoria, we decided to stop in since the two of us left the hotel without having any breakfast, and not grabbing a cup of coffee from the lobby on our way out. The bakery is in the front of the shop and has a small counter that seats three. But since that area was taken, we decided to sit in the coffee shop. The coffee shop is somewhat small and has an old school look and feel to it. Very homey and simple is how I'd best describe it. And because you seat yourself, we took the last open table where our friendly waitress brought us menus and glasses of water right away. We got the Vanilla Slice and the Lemon Cream Pie. While the Vanilla Slice was "ok", I enjoyed the Lemon Pie much better. It was like a lemon cheesecake only not as dense. It was a little tart and the crust reminded me of puff pastry. We visited Dutch Bakery & Coffee Shop on Christmas Eve while vacationing in Victoria and this place turned out to be a huge disappointment. We sat in the dining section and ordered espresso with breakfast and one slice of vanilla cake and an apple strudel. The espresso was super flat and did not taste morning fresh. The breakfast was 2 scrambled eggs and multigrain toast with pan fried potatoes. The best part of the toast was the selection of jams. The gal who took our order was less than stellar. She didn't even bring us a cup of water with our meal and still forgot even after I had reminded her. We ate our breakfast with no water and my throat was parched the entire time. Come danish time, she brings us our apple strudel that is cold. It was disgusting. Who wants a cold apple strudel?The whole pastry itself had been sitting inside the refrigerator. Everything about it was terrible. The vanilla cake also was way too cold. Couldn't we at least been served room temperature cake? To get a cold and hard piece of cake served during breakfast was definitely not appetizing. read more

A really cute little diner with wonderful service. It's nothing too fancy but it is perfect for a quick easy breakfast. It's very straightforward food, and very affordable too. I went alone for breakfast and sat at the bar and had a lovely time drinking a cup of coffee and reading while I waited for my breakfast. I would definitely go back for a nice hangover meal on a saturday morning and I would love to visit again for their "afternoon dessert" special. We have been customers of the Dutch Bakery for many years. We have been going there since the 1970s. We love the desserts (pastries), especially the mocha cake with almonds on top. We also love the "deer legs" as an occasional treat, as well as the strawberry shortcake when it is in season. For lunch in the dining area, I enjoy the clubhouse sandwich and my wife enjoys the rueben sandwich. (The sandwiches bring us back memories of eating at the Dutch Bakery for lunch every day in the late 1970s as I used to work across the street there.) The Dutch Bakery has remarkably kept up the consistent quality of its desserts (pastries) over all these years. Now for the negative comments. Unfortunately, our last experience at the Dutch Bakery on October 12th was not a good one. As we were ordering a slice of mocha cake (with almonds on top), we saw a mouse scurry by our dining table. The waitress who was taking our dessert order at the time, commented that "mice get in through the door." A few minutes later we saw the mouse scurry by a second time and then a third time in the dining area of the store. The waitress was so blasé about the whole incident. As if seeing MICE is a common occurrence there. What if the mouse, or mice, get in the food or the flour?! We have filed a complaint with the restaurant inspector for Island Health in Victoria. We no longer want to go back as customers to the Dutch Bakery store. The food is no longer appetizing to us. Lastly, as other reviewers have noted, the dining portion of the Dutch Bakery has an old-fashioned feel to it and it's mostly for nostalgic reasons people still make a trip to the Dutch Bakery. Sadly, though, if mice are getting in regularly to the store, maybe the Dutch Bakery has outlived its time and needs to close its doors. read more

Pretty traditional Dutch bakery. Lots of marzipan treats for the holidays. I would have rather eaten breakfast here because the bakery choices were kind of a let down. Dutch/German pastries do not excite me as much as French pastries do. Also, we walked in just as they opened and they had limited amounts of items ready. The upside to this is that they were literally putting things hot from the oven on the shelves while we were there. We ordered a muffin, a croissant and a couple of other pastries. Nothing exciting. The croissant was definitely a let down, but this isn't a French bakery after all. This place is much more like a diner than the cute cafe I was expecting. Fine for a quick sit-down lunch, but don't expect more than a simple diner where you'll be packed next to strangers. I wasn't that impressed by the menu... the sandwiches sounded and looked pretty standard. I got one veal croquette with toast and a side salad. The salad was as basic as they come: a few wimpy iceberg lettuce leaves, a couple slices of tomatoes, and no choice of dressing (it ended up being some creamy type, which I generally avoid). The whole wheat toast (you get a choice of other breads too) was buttery and hearty, and I recommend getting the croquettes here. Crispy on the outside, the creamy inside melts in your mouth. Everything on the pastry menu sounded pretty tantalizing, but we finally decided on the Mocha Tart and the Vanilla Slice, which were recommended. The Mocha Tart was fine but far from phenomenal, and the vanilla slice was way too sweet and rich. I have an unhealthy ability to enjoy really sweet and rich desserts, but I just did not find the Vanilla Slice enjoyable at all. It's cool that this place has been run by the same family for over 50 years, but I was a bit disappointed. I think you just have to go there with appropriate expectations. read more

The Dutch & Canadian butter cookies were both yummy, buttery goodness. If I had to choose, the Dutch butter cookie would be the winner bc it was a bit crunchier but not crispy. 1 cookie was chocolate buttercream sandwiched between 2 dark chocolate dipped cookies.
