TLDR: staff were extremely hostile and discriminatory towards my elderly (70+) parents, shamed them, and threatened them (Cook Street Village location). If I could give zero or negative stars I would. Myself and my elderly folks went in today for snacks, and my mom got a cookie that tasted really bad. When my dad went up to the counter to inquire about exchanging it, the girl at the counter shamed him, saying she would personally NEVER return a cookie because she didn't like how it tasted and made him feel really bad. She then refused to do anything about it. My dad came back to our table upset, as the girl was very hostile towards him. When he went back up to ask to speak to the owner regarding the situation, he was told that the owner "would not be wasting his time talking to us." It got to the point that I had to ask the counter staff to please stop yelling at my elderly parents. The guy who was working behind the counter came out all puffed up and got in my dad's face and told us to "GET THE F*** OUT!!". They then threatened to call the police on us. As we were leaving, the counter girl said sarcastically "have a GREAT day, you crazy customers" or something derogatory like that. We have never been treated like that by any counter staff ever, and we were in shock and disbelief. And if this is how the owner really feels about his customers...that we are a waste of time...this is likely the root of the problems this place has. NEVER again going back. Just...wow. read more

The good thing here was while a lot of places were shut on the public holiday we visited, they weren't so we were able to grab a handful of pastry items to go. I was disappointed though, I found the crossoint really crumbly and a bit stale along with a couple of the other items we tried. The large cookie was rather nice. Kids didn't seem to mind. They have a bit of seating outside which works if you want to have your dog with you. I think they offer a number of gluten free items so it might work for those finding it hard to get specialty items. Nothing too exciting going on here. The cases seemed half bare (at noon) so not a whole lot of selection. I had a breakfast sandwich. The biscuit was great but there was barely anything in it. One spinach leaf, one thin slice of tomato, ditto for the cheese that had disappeared into the bread by then and a thin slice of egg. The server was snippy. We stopped at Bubby Rose's at around 9am. It was immediately clear that the bakery is a staple in the community, with many people sitting at the tables outside and a growing line inside. The wait was a little long, but not unexpected as there was only person working the counter while many others were busy baking fresh goods in the back. The interior atmosphere was quaint and warm, and the exterior seating where we ate was nice as well. The coffee was excellent, and being roasted in-house definitely added to the quality. The breakfast sandwich was quite good. The tea biscuit it was served on tasted very fresh, and the homemade pesto gave it a nice, unique flavour. The gluten-free bun, as an alternate option, was delicious as well. After our meal, we returned inside to buy an assortment of cookies. They'd been baked that morning, and we'd watched the fresh batch being put out. They were all very good, the oatmeal raisin especially, and very big. Bubby Rose's is a great little bakery and a good place to stop for a quick breakfast and coffee in Victoria. read more

On a beautiful summer's day I had a vege chilli with cheese and bread and a flat white to top it off. Food/coffee taste and quality was ok and doable, however, not great or exceptional and that's what I enjoy when treating myself for an outing. The chilli was filling and lacking the flavour profile to give my tastebuds any punch. The coffee was well off track to a flat white and wasn't bitter so passed in my books - milk not frothed well, no latte art, diluted coffee flavour, maybe I'm a snob or asked for the wrong coffee. Loved the outside seating. Although roadside it's still a decent place to sit and enjoy the area in the sun. Baked goods/pies looked great and I'd definately come back to give them ago but would give coffee a miss and try another spot. read more

I come to Victoria about 3 times a year from Portland and I'm always looking for a different experience and places a bit farther outside of the 'tourist bubble'. I was hankering for a bakery treat. Having already visited QV, the Dutch Bakery, La Roux, Crust, Murchie's, etc, I needed to venture father out. Found Bubby's and it was near closing time. Picked a flourless chocolate torte and salted caramel apple bar. OMG they were both delicious! Went back tonight right before closing so that I could take a couple back with my on the ferry tomorrow morning. Service was a bit flat - not unfriendly, just not any effort to make that friendly/warm connection. Maybe I just didn't try hard enough. It won't keep me from coming back though! read more

Just a fantastic bakery and small cafe. We headed over for brunch and tastes of many items. Some of these items included: carrot cake, butter tarts, quinoa cake, pizza, frittata, breakfast sandwiches and Mac and cheese. Good coffee and tea. Everything is made on site and a lot of gluten free and vegan options. The seating can be limited when it's busy, but for nice days there's a good amount of seating outside as well. We were a party of 5, and slipped easily into their one table for 6. We'll be back for sure! read more

Came in for a bite on our way to visit the Butchart Gardens and the food was delicious. I had a little Greek salad and lemon ginger scone and my wife had a smoked salmon quiche and a chocolate almond croissant. My little salad was made from really good vegetables and just tasted great to me. The scone was good too and my wife lover her food. And as seems to be the case all over the Island the people, customers and staff were friendly and compared to where I live, really polite. read more

I recently returned to Bubby Rose's for breakfast. In my previous review I mentioned that the croissants were among the best in Victoria, just a little heavy for my taste, they've improved since then, a little lighter and a little flakier. I can also recommend the mini cinnamon buns (just sticky enough to be good without being too diificult to eat), the maccha green tea cookies (nice white chocolate chips), and the cappuccinos (they use Discovery Coffee). I also saw great looking french toast (big slices of challah bread) but wasn't hungry enough to try it, maybe next time, and there will be a next time. read more

This establishment keeps running out of bread by 11am...they just can't be bothered to properly manage their inventory to serve their customers. To make matters worse, the staff don't feel the need to apologize for this, as if they are doing you a favour, so you should just have showed up earlier... I recommend you go elsewhere, where customers are treated with respect and appreciated. read more

Bubby Rose's gets three stars for product alone int his review. I picked up two Gluten Free products to take home, the banana bread and their pizza dough. The banana bread was absolutely yummy...sampled it at work and it was a huge hit. Very moist with great banana taste and no hint of gluten free after taste at all. The pizza dough, which I used last night to make a totally delish pep and mush pizza, completely exceeded my expectations. It was easy to work with, filled a 12" pizza pan nicely and cooked up beautifully. It did shrink a bit, so next time I won't put the toppings right to the edge of the dough, but I would most certainly buy it again. So why only three stars for these two stellar products? SERVICE... inattentive service can indeed ruin the best meal and put a bad spin on the greatest of products. You can produce the best of the best of what you do, but unless you back it up with great service in equal measure, then you are doing yourself a serious disservice. This visit to Bubby Rose's was my first,although it won't be my last because the products were so great, however, after being sloughed off by one employee and ignored by two others, I just do have to say...Bubby Rose's, "You can do better than that". Overall: The food quality is variable but the service is excruciatingly slow. Came here on a recommendation from a friend but don't really think I'll be coming back anytime soon or ever really. Didn't have any but the bread looked good. I want to give this place the benefit of the doubt so maybe just don't do any dine-in and just go for the bread? Food: Ordered a salmon breakfast sandwich and cinnamon roll. Was also given a complimentary "cruffin" (muffin made from croissant dough) due to the excessive wait that was endured and what was likely an increasingly unhappy look on my face. The breakfast sandwich was decent and reasonably filling but the baked goods left me unsatisfied. The cinnamon roll was quite dry and bland. Probably the best thing about it was that it didn't have icing smeared all over it. Definitely have had much better cinnamon rolls elsewhere, even grocery stores. The complimentary cruffin (partially covered in chocolate) that was offered was extremely sweet to the point where I could only stomach a single bite and threw the rest out. Unless you have a major sweet tooth, I'd stay clear of that one. Service: As the pre-made sandwiches weren't quite ready when I ordered, I was told that it would take about 5-10 minutes but that seemed like a reasonable wait at the time. Ended up waiting almost 40 minutes for a breakfast sandwich. This was in part due to how long it took the back of house to create the sandwiches but also due to the fact that once a large batch were made and placed in a clear display case, it took the front of house person at least 10 minutes to notice that they had been completed and another 5-10 minutes for them to re-heat the sandwiches and get them out. There was an attempt to pacify my irritation with the cruffin but given how it didn't sit well with me, I would argue that it only served to darken my mood. Cost: The price of the food borders on reasonable but after looking at the prices of coffee, I'd say it's a little more than average. That being said, I don't drink a lot of coffee so I may be wrong. Interior: As another reviewer put it, the inside is "rustic" and "casual". There isn't a ton of space inside and it isn't the fanciest cafe in the world but that's not what it's going for and that's perfectly fine. It really is a quiet neighbourhood cafe and doesn't really try to sell itself as anything else. Hours: Early opening and early closing. The bakery is located up on Cook st near Fort St. It's a small bakery with only 4 tables inside. During the summer, tables are placed outside so there is more space if you want to hang out with friends. They have loads of choices: sweet and lunch options. They are even offering gluten-free waffles now for breakfast. My sister thought they were disgusting though. :( I personally like their pies, cookies and pizzas. I had a shortbread cookie today and it was delicious. I have had their pies on multiple occasions and it was also really good. My mom loves their soy chai latte. The service is nice. Usually, the female owner is the one at the bakery (the husband manages the restaurant). She is very nice and even speaks French a little bit since they lived in Montreal for a couple of years. Seeing as how the majority of Victoria's coffee houses are closed on Sundays, my wife and I walked for quite a while from our hotel to Bubby Rose's Bakery based on a strong recommendation. Location was in the center of a nice area of markets and coffee shops off of Cook Street. Looked like mostly locals coming by, which is always a good sign. The food we ordered was okay (basic pastries, I don't remember exactly what) - but the coffee is what I remember. They serve Discovery Coffee, a local brew that I wanted to try. I'm not coffee aficionado, but this was some damn good coffee. Space was very cramped, and the guy behind the counter seemed to be new to the job for he moved quite slowly and had a lot of questions he had to run by the lady working with pastries in the back. read more

They told me Bubby Rose so we went right away to buy a couple loaves to take home with us on the ferry. Now whenever we visit Victoria, we pick up some of that bread. We visted Bubby Rose twice during our most recent trip to Victoria. On our first visit we stopped for coffee and baked goods. They have quite limited seating but we managed to get a table. They have a great selection of baked goods, a lot of which are organic and/or gluten free. The prices were very reasonable, even the organic/gluten free items. Everything we tried was excellent. We returned the next day for breakfast - my gf had the waffle I had the French toast, both were excellent. Service is excellent and everyone is very friendly. Update - Unfortunately I have to lower my rating for Bubby Rose from five stars to four. We bought some Christmas baking to take home with us, a package of shortbread and two stolen. The shortbread is tasteless and soft, almost as if it is undercooked. It is no exaggeration to say it is the worst shortbread I have ever had. The stolen isn't bad, and given that it wasn't that expensive it is okay, but it is very plain and I wouldn't buy it again. They should either get new recipes for these items or remove them from their menu. read more

Overall: Great spot, dependably lousy service. Too many trendoids. Unjustifably popular. Tooks on Cook across the street is far, far better (except it is closed on Sunday). Apparently they have regulars who feel free to just walk in, grab a coffee and (I guess) pay later, leaving you waiting in line to get at the very small coffee area, and when you get there, it's empty coffee urns, empty milk and cream, and a mess. I've only been twice (I know, why return after the first time?), but both times this was the case. Will not be back. read more

Heavenly moist delicious carrot cake. Also tried a Polar bear - some kind of granola chocolate ball covered in icing sugar. It's heavy, cute and white. Other treats looked good, interesting crowd and employees with community information and bulletin board. I want to stress that they serve Discovery coffee out of a serious espresso machine and when I was there the barista was skillful. I love Bubby Rose's Bakery. I work in the area, and find myself there for an Americano and Morning Gold muffin at least 4 times a week - best coffee and best muffins! My husband and I also love their pies - delicious without being too sweet. Also, part of our staple is their farmhouse sourdough bread. I'm very happy that they're using organic ingredients. There is often a long line-up, and I guess some people would become impatient with that, however I find the whole scene fascinating, so I don't mind standing around waiting. This is one of the most unique bakeries I've ever experienced - a real treasure! read more

Cozy and full of character - this is a local eatery that makes it a point to provide delicious vegan and gluten-free options, from the pizza (and you can buy the dough frozen to take home) to the outstanding Quinoa Sandwich, which is really a delectable dark chocolate with lemony cream filling dessert but hey, it's good for you! There are soups and sandwiches in addition to regular bakery fare. The black bean soup was all right, not a favourite of mine as it was a bit thick, but the thick-sliced bread that came on the side was heavenly. Good coffee as well, plus barista options.
