My husband and I visiting from Florida stopped by here to have breakfast. Great time warp place with original dinner interiors with a pink and grey color scheme. Driving thru the back roads of PA on our way home to Michigan after a weekend trip to see my Grandson & Daughter & what a surprise a joy to discover in the middle of no where a super diner. With everything i like about diners. classic menu. Great service & pies pies pies for dessert!!!! We started with Bavarian Cabbage soup which was filled with veggies & a piquant tomato base. I followed with a Reuben Sandwich & it was near perfect. Great corned beef, tangy sauerkraut,Swiss Cheese & great Rye bread & just the right size. The Famous Dutch Kitchen is a random, chill spot right on 61. Friends and I stopped here for lunch on the way to Penn State one trip. According to their web site, they've been family-owned and operated since 1971. There's convenient parking out front. The juke box at our table didn't work, but we took advantage of their salad bar and had an inexpensive, hearty lunch. Service was mystified by our random group (we looked like the UN), but treated us courteously. Worth a try if you're passing through! read more

A real good way to warm up for the massive Amish feeds down south, and maybe better than many of them. Definitely get the salad bar which has lots of Amish-style pickly things and is just $1.50 extra with most meals. Michael Stern of Roadfood.com visited this place and recommends the turkey dinner but that comes with both "filling" (aka stuffing/dressing) and potatoes which sounded just too much so I had the pot pie, really nice big chunks of chicken with nice gravy and veggies but served with noodles instead of a crust. My 9 y/o had the burger which was fine, though he was already filled up before it arrived with the excellent milkshake. What a nice place for a GREAT right off the road eating experience. It is almost like stepping back in time. I had chicken pot pie, which came with apple sauce and was like pulled chicken in the dish. The bread ... I had seconds ... Was also notable and even the whipped butter tasted good. My wife had salmon and I tasted it and it was also very good. Our son had a kiddie burger, which was essentially a eegular sized burger. We were all stuffed and had to skip the yummy dessert menu, which includes some unique local ice cream flavors. The service was also super and everyone was very friendly. I am a HUGE fan of local places and their survival. I will ALWAYS eat at a mom & pop place and never eat at a Cracker Barrel, etc (yes, I know many are owned by local people). Recently stopped in for breakfast and waited while a young female worker walked by and/or made eye contact for SEVEN minutes. Never said good morning, hello, we will be right with you. Nothing. Got up to leave and an older lady asked "are you ready?". I explained that the only thing we were ready for was our departure. Zero problem waiting (there were TWO customers in the diner section) if need be but expect acknowledgement that we were there. Departed and had a great breakfast at a place in a nearby town. We came for breakfast and we were not let down! Creamed chipped beef...YUM! Eggs and waffles both good...they also make their own maple syrup here! Prices are outrageous for a city boy...steak and eggs...8.95...2 eggs, homefries, meat and toast...6.95...basically free breakfast meat compared to the places I normally dine... a la carte... 3 pancakes 4.95 2 Eggs and Toast 2.95 bacon\sausage\scrapple 2.75 Delmonico Steak 5.50 Western Omelette 6.95 Service was OK...I see some reviewers have mentioned it and used the word "surly", which isn't far off the mark...altho our server really didn't crack a smile, she was pleasant and served us well, but she was far from warm. Well...it used to be five stars because we came a lot but now it's a one star and we'll never be returning. While everyone gets A-class service we get a visit every half hour....service seems to get worse every time we visit except for the amazing waiter Eric, the only person who does a great job there. We are always very nice and never cause any problems but it sounds like a small town gets petty when they see people they don't like. Sucks to be the last few people who've waited on us because the tips they received were terrible because they wanted to be terrible servers. The once famous Dutch Kitchen Restaurant needs a bit of an overhaul. The food is OK, but nothing to write home about. Careful attention to cleanliness, both in the kitchen and about the restaurant, leaves a bit to be desired. Cakes and pies are left uncovered on the counter leaving the food a great landing field for flies. Used to be a place where people would take the exit off of I-81 to try the "famous" Dutch Kitchen. Today, they drive on by. Their 50's motif counter is nice and, the "neighborly" feel in the large dining room is pleasant. HOWEVER, "atmosphere" only goes so far. The Dutch Kitchen Restaurant was a last minute choice, and a last minute mistake. My fiance and I needed to find a restaurant halfway between Harrisburg and Lake Ariel to introduce our parents for the first time. Our first choice of location was The Pizza Place in Frackville, but when we arrived we discovered it is definitely intended to be a take-out place. The Dutch Kitchen was our backup choice. When a prior reviewer referenced this as similar to Cracker Barrel, I suppose I can agree, on a MUCH smaller scale. It is a country restaurant catering to the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch tastes, with a mix of regular American type fare. Service was slow, and is my major complaint here. Our group of 6 was seated at a roomy table....our drink orders were taken, then we were ignored for a bit. Our meal order was taken, and after that I had to flag down a wait staff member to get a refill of tea...our server didn't come back to our table until the food arrived, and didn't offer any refills until I asked (after failing to catch the attention of 2 other equally inattentive staff. I was not the only one lacking a refill at their table) I am a fan of PA Dutch pot pie (chicken, ham or beef..I like all of them). Potpie made with dumpling noodles, in a rich sauce/gravy, with no baked crust. A potpie really made IN a pot. When I saw the Dutch Kitchen had pot-pie on offer, that was my immediate choice. The most positive part of the meal, other than the successful introduction of our parents, was the salad. Not for the lettuce...but the blue cheese dressing. It was fantastic. Giant chunks of real blue cheese, and the dressing seemed house made. Pot pie at the Dutch kitchen was a mistake. The "noodles" were highly inconsistent. That is fine, when it is a house made product...but one of my "noodles" was a dumpling dough ball the size of a small potato (no, it was not a potato...I'm VERY familiar with taters!) and was definitely not cooked long enough. It retained a raw flour flavor and a far too firm consistency through the center. A large (half a chicken breast size) chunk of chicken was buried on one side of the dish...not cut, just a giant chunk of chicken. There were a few other pieces of meat through the gluey gravy, but for some reason this dish needed half a darn chicken breast in the middle of its pot pie, not incorporated. My table companions had a beefsteak sandwich with French fries (the fries were good, but unseasoned), my fiance's parents split a turkey croissant (turkey was dry and sandwich needed more mayo or other condiment to even begin to mask the dryness) and my stepfather (who was starving) also got the pot pie. His dish of pot pie was less inconsistent..with better cooked noodles, and more evenly distributed chicken. The meal for 6 people (with 2 of those people splitting a meal) was over $60. Price wise, it wasn't horrible, certainly...but the food was sub-par for diner food...let alone a "restaurant". The lack of attentive service staff was the most disappointing part of the visit. The restaurant was not swamped with customers, and there seemed to be adequate table coverage. Our young (20something?) server just needs more training and experience. read more

Well I must say the only reason for stopping here on my family road trip down to Florida was for the nostalgia of previous family road trips down to Florida with my gram. She's been gone 10 years now. Me, my mom, dad & brother were making our way through the mountains and we had to stop at the Dutch Kitchen because everyone that has ever made the trip down with Gram heard her boast about the quality locally made goods, delicious jams and pastries here. We stopped in and got a nice fast, hot satisfying breakfast and were back on our way on the road in less than an hour. The one waitress was working the counter and dining room. This is my first negative review, and to be honest , well deserved. I read the reviews after I was already disappointed with my meal and service... But the ones that read used to be good , but no longer, and tastes like no flavor nursing home food were quite accurate. I am a far cry from a chef, but I would rather eat cereal then come back. We used to stop here on our way home from Ashland back to Jersey, haven't been in a few years, and won't be back. It's a shame, it's a cute little place, but the staff needs to pay better attention and the chef could use updating . Save your money!!! read more

It has been a while since I have been here to eat. ANd it will be the last time for sure. Breakfast was disgusting. Coffee was some of the worst I have had, Maxwell house of all things. Eggs were odd colored, and the potatoes were not cooked, and turning black where it was raw. The toast was barely toasted, and the meek little waitress was barely audible when she spoke. Not a fan. My friend and I were starting the long drive back to MA and saw the sign from the highway and decided to check it out. We should have kept on driving! The place was pretty beat up inside. We didn't even realize there was a dining room and thought it was all the diner section that we were seated in. Broken seats, dingy tables, and just grease in the air. Our waitress was awful. I totally felt like we should leave by how she treated us before taking our order. Thankfully, she went on a break and another woman served us who was slightly less surly. There was a gawd awful annoying conversation going on behind us the entire time we tried to eat. Older people talking about watching grandchildren and how they had to smack them! And... it turned out the loudest and rudest was our waitress. Great personality, lady. The food was mediocre at best. No one even came to refill our water or ask how the food was. Stopped here for lunch and we're very pleased. Its right off 81. Very clean and great friendly service. The ham, yellow bean, potato soup was delicious! Stopped here for a quick lunch during the seemingly never-ending drive through Pennsylvania on I-81. The Dutch Kitchen is right off the highway in Frackville. You'll see plenty of billboards for it as you get nearer. It was fairly empty when we stopped in. The walls are cluttered with tchotchkes and things for sale. It's very country. They serve breakfast all day, which is a plus. I can always go for breakfast foods. I ordered Jack's Choice, which is two eggs, meat, toast, and pancakes, which I upgraded to french toast. I also got a side of homefries because I'm a sucker for potatoes. It was a fairly mediocre breakfast with nothing that really stood out. The french toast was OK, but kind of thin and limp. The syrup was fake and watery. The eggs were OK as was the bacon. They kind of skimped on everything, which was kind of surprising since places like this are usually a good bargain. It was a little disappointing. The lady ordered a turkey sandwich, which came as two pieces of bread with turkey in between. When she asked where the lettuce and tomato was, they told her that she had to request them to get them. Weird. The food and prices here are unimpressive for what you get. But, I will say that it's a better meal on the road than stopping at a McDonald's or something similar. read more

While traveling out to Shenandoah, we stumbled upon this place. It is like time has stood still here. The front of the restaurant feels like an old-school diner while the rear dining room looks country'ish. (think - wood paneling meets stainless steel). We only stopped-in for some cups of soup and coffee so we can't comment much on the food. The service was adequate. I am not much of a diner person anymore (the nostalgia is gone for me) so I probably wouldn't stop here again. This diner lives up the the true diner experience! Even though this city-dweller was miles from home...I felt welcomed right away. Complete with home cooked PA Dutch specials like the meatloaf and pot pie. I was completely stuffed from the pot pie and my colleague devoured the meatloaf. I love diners. I would love to just take a cross-country road trip, stopping at all of the greasy spoons along the way. (I should call Guy Fieri and see if he needs a traveling buddy for "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives"!) I would so rock at that. My quest for the quintessential diner experience doesn't exactly end here. Dutch Kitchen (or "Dutch Oven" as the kid eloquently refers to it) does offer stick-to-your-ribs, homemade food at good prices. Collectively, we just felt they fell short on the overall experience. Husband and I started with the chicken corn soup, which was perfectly seasoned, packed with veggies, chicken and noodles, and just hit the spot. The kid and I both ordered burgers, and D. had the chicken pot pie. Our entrees were good, but aside from the soup, nothing really stood out. As usual, we completely over-ordered by getting dessert, but it was disappointing. My peach pie was burned, and really didn't taste homemade at all, and J.'s milkshake was just OK. I came here with my girlfriend on a recommendation from a family member. They said they were there a few years ago and that it was an amazing restaurant. Well, things must've changed since it wasn't all that amazing. It took us about 10 minutes to get anyone to give us menus or take our drink orders when the dining room was basically empty. We got chicken strips and a chicken salad. The bread that came with the meal was delicious. Unfortunately everything else tasted like it just came out of the microwave or just not very fresh. We sat by a nice couple who were regulars there, campers, who led us safely through the back roads to the next entrance to the highway.
