Dutch Monkey Doughnuts scores points for product density and the quality and taste of the fillings, and toppings. Though the dough is heftier than practically any other brand of doughnut, it takes the toppings and fillings to give the product character, as the dough's flavor is lackluster. Here is the lineup I purchased and the verdict: 1. Buttermilk Cake: Slightly heavier than all other cake doughnuts in its class but undersized. No more flavor than an average cake doughnut. It took the sugary glaze to give it any notoriety but glaze just doesn't belong on a cake doughnut. 2. Passion fruit bar with coconut topping: The flavors of passion fruit and coconut clashed. There was plenty of quality coconut on top but the passion fruit filling just wasn't a flavor that fused well with pastry. The product would have been considerably better without the passion fruit. My opinion of the dough also transfers to this item. 3. Lemon Bismarck: Excellent lemon filling, smooth and light with a high degree of lemony tartness. The filling was reminiscent of a very good quality key lime pie filling. The dough however, was too chewy and lacked flavor. 4. Mixed Berry: Flavorful filling with an impressionably intense homemade identity. On the down side, the berry filling was too runny and the amount of filling was skimpy, perhaps only a tablespoon or so. The same setback with the dough remains: too chewy and no flavor. 5. Boston Cream: The best part of the doughnut was the chocolate icing. Very pungent, dark chocolate flavor, rich and melty smooth. The filling was faint, nearly bland. Again the dough was memorable only for its nondescript taste and slightly chewy texture. The service personnel were friendly and patient. I purchased 5 items and the price tag was almost $10.00. Considering price, quality and quantity, the components that comprise overall value, I was not impressed enough with the items I sampled at Dutch Monkey Doughnuts to consider a return visit. I was somewhat surprised but understanding or her viewpoint when a true doughnut aficionado said to me, "Even if the prices were comparable, I'd still choose Krispy Kreme". read more

I finally went because of all the rave reviews. It was very disappointing. The donuts are dry and tasteless. The fillings were nondescript. Flavors were mild and without body. Meh...I just don't get the fuss about this place. I tried the Dutch Monkey Doughnut & hated it. I found the doughnut portion pretty much tasted like white bread. The filling which was supposed to taste like dulce de leche tasted like bananas. I took 2 bites & abandoned it. It wasn't worth the calories. I tried someting like a bavarian creme & found the consistency & taste like white bread. The cream wasn't tastey at all. Once again I abandoned the doughnut & threw it out (not worth calories). My daughter had a plain glazed doughnut and rated it a "D". We prefer our doughnuts much lighter & tastier. On the positive side the staff is very kind. Man I hate giving this a 2 star but this was based on the only donut I had and it was a huge disappointment. I will go back and get another donut eventually and update my rating hopefully. I stopped here by accident trying to find the chick fil a but I have seen this place on yelp before. I wanted to bring my wife home a nice treat and pick up something good for myself. The parking lot is fairly small but it wasn't busy on this Friday morning. The decor and feel upon entering gave me high hopes. I looked around for a little bit and decided on a Boston cream. On first bite I got excited as the donut and icing was pretty delicious. Then on the next bite I hit the "cream" and that's where it went downhill. The cream had the look and consistently of what I can only describe as mushed egg yolks. I got my wife and son a glazed and iced chocolate donut but they haven't eaten theirs yet. We tried DMD out this past weekend! First of all, it has a very fun, trendy atmosphere. My two girls loved that they had stools to stand on so you could look in the side windows and see what was happening in the kitchen! They are very kid friendly - had a special kid table and also stool in the restroom to reach the sink! Since it was our first visit, the gentleman at the counter was really helpful in explaining the types of doughnuts and gave us some great recommendations. We tried several different kids, they were all really good. My fav. though was just the regular chocolate iced cake doughnut. He said that was his fav and I'm so glad he shared that -- we may have overlooked it with all of the other specialty flavors to choose from. I checked out their website and facebook page before coming - they included all of the featured doughnuts of the day. Unfortunately we came towards the afternoon so some of their most popular flavors had sold out. Next time we'll come early! Overall it was a great experience. They do seem a little pricey, but really once you consider that they are using quality ingredients, it's worth the extra cost. read more

Love, love, love this place!! My husband and I went to Dutch Monkey recently and there was a line all he way through the store, which was kind of crazy but I totally understand why. The doughnuts are amazing and they have so many different and super delicious kinds. It was a little overwhelming at first because there isn't a clear menu posted, you just walk around the counter and let the rep behind the counter know which ones you want. We got six doughnuts and some coffee and they were all yummy. The coffee took a little longer than I would normally expect but it was packed so I understand the wait. All of the employees were super nice and it's cool that you can see into the kitchen while waiting to place your order...definitely a great way to entertain kids (and adults!) while you're in line. It is so refreshing to find a creative donought shop. They are always trying new things and boy, are they delicious creations.They also have their tried and true creations that I depend on finding behind the counter like the 'Not Somoa' which is a take on a girl scout cookie but Dutch Monkey does it better. The very simple 'Strawberry Bar' is amazing with its strawberry and cream flavors sprinkled with sugar. You will also find great coffee and beautifully crafted espresso drinks. Extremely overcrowded during breakfast hours is my only complaint, but in general they have the best donuts you'll find in Mid/Northern Georgia. The coffee isn't terrible but also isn't all that great, kind of like Chick-fil-A's. The strawberry topped bagel is better than eating strawberry shortcake, and the Nutella bagel is great if you like Nutella, but it's more of a novelty. Their standard donuts are anything but standard, they are very much above par. I did have a salted caramel donut that wasn't as good as I had hoped. It kind of tasted like it had soggy pretzels on it. Great customer service and cute setting. There is very limited seating, however, so plan to go through their drive thru or get take out, as you likely won't find a seat if you plan to dine in. read more

Maple Bar, Salted Caramel Bar, Chocolate-Cinnamon Twist, Boston Cream and Strawberry filled with Chocolate glaze. The flavor and texture of the dough basically tasted like it was already a day old, possible 2 days old. The dough was dry, pretty firm and lacked any extract or yeast flavor. Every time we put in an order it is ready on time and they even help me load the car up (21 boxes!). The doughnuts look and taste great, and none of them look rushed. The BEST donuts in Atlanta. I loved the Salted Caramel doughnut, my husband had the Maple walnut doughnut. Drool, drool, drool ! Nice puffed, holed doughnut that tasted like heaven in my mouth. (No nasty aftertaste like some chains when you have their donuts.) The caramel topping was tasty and not too sweet. You could actually TASTE the caramel. The maple topping was sublime with a sprinkle of walnuts. Yummy ! We made a special trip to try them.We also had iced coffee and it was a great compliment to their doughnuts. Ok so the boyfriend lives 7 minutes away from here and on my last visit to his place, I decided to swing by to try the donuts, thanks to Sean M.'s review. The logo is super cute, and the store itself is very nicely decorated, simple, and clean with large tables with benches to sit. They serve illy coffee, and the donuts range from 1.25- 2.75 a donut. A little stiff in the price, but these are pretty hearty and dense donuts. Not the typical light and airy donuts you would expect from a place like Krispy Kreme. The apple fritter donut wassolid, with alot of fresh apple bits. I would come here once in awhile if I had a sweet craving! Just when I think that I have found a place that might threaten my ongoing love affair with Sublime Doughnuts, I am happily disappointed. Seriously...this place is waaay too far for me to travel to with the frightening regularity my doughnut addiction requires. Luckily for me, I wasn't in love with these beautiful, fragrant donuts. Thank Goodness. So. This place is a super cute cocoon of sugary, cinnamony goodness. You walk in, and literally, start drooling. Everything looks like....OMG. Give me one of everything. There was the cutest old guy in there who clearly is their number one fan, and he pretty much gave me the run down on his favorite items-gotta love a enthused customer. I got the lemon meringue, a sweet potato, an apple fritter and a mixed berry something or other with powdered sugar on top. All neatly packaged in a cute, brown box. I think all my donuts were maybe 10 bucks? Around there. It ain't cheap, but these aren't your basic cheap doughnuts, so whatever. Sweet potato was like pure heaven. I kid you not. I took one bite, and was like...oh no. This is sooooo good. I'm gonna want to come back here. Picture soft, spicy cakey goodness. Now that was one yummy ass doughnut. Luckily, it was downhill from there. The apple fritter, while beautifully glazed and glistening, full of chunks of toothsome apples was strangely tough. The batter was sorta eggy and it had a deep yellow color, which I'm sure is due to some type of hard wheat organic flour that is probably gourmet and fancy that i'm just too uncouth and ignorant to appreciate. Either way, If you ever need a weapon, use that apple fritter. Sucker is heavy. The mixed berry filled was meh....nice tasting jelly stuff inside, lovely snowdrifts of powdered sugar on the top, but i just didn't care for the doughnut part itself. And the lemon meringue. I couldn't finish it. Didn't want to. Again, same tough, rubbery eggy doughnut, chewy meringue on the top...and the lemon part? Holy painful tartness. That was so so so so so sour....and bitter. No. Absolutely not taking any more bites of that thing. Then greedy monster won out, and I thought, well, maybe the tartness is meant to balance out all the other sweetness, try it again, and this time, be sure you have a bit of everything. Nope. Not the answer. Bottom line, not my cup of tea. But cute as a button, definitely made with love and lots of quality ingredients....just not for me. And it's okay. I'm going to be 200% honest with you. I love this place. I have family who lives near Dutch Monkey Doughnuts, or as I like to call it, The DMD. Sometimes I shorten that to D&D. Then I usually like to elongate it to Dungeons and Dragons. And then I cry about not going to prom. As you can tell, high school was a very nerdy, traumatic time for me. Look, I'm talking to a therapist about it. Let's focus on the doughnuts for now. As I said, I have family near the doughnut shop. Whenever I visit them, I always make a trip to The DMD. Truth is, I don't even like my family. I just use them as an excuse to come here. They're awful people. One of my cousins gets paid to scare children. Literally, some crazy, rich geriatric gives her money to do that. She should be put in jail. It's like that psychotic octogenarian got his hands on a copy of Monsters Inc. and then decided to make a real life version of it. I hope that old man dies so she no longer has a reason to frighten children. But it's worth hanging around those horrible people, because The DMD is the best. My two absolute favorite doughnuts are the Maple Bar and the Key Lime Pie Bismark. The texture and flavor of the Maple Bar is amazing. It's like a brick of the finest dough. And that Key Lime Pie Bismark has this delicious Key Lime filling with the right amount of tang. It makes up for my family and 75% of high school. Nothing will ever make up for junior year ... My only complaint is that on the weekends a lot of families visit the store and it can get loud. You may have to share a table with some of them. Sometimes there will be children wailing next to you. We visited Dutch Monkey on a Friday around 11:30am and were pleased to see they had a lot of different varieties -- nothing seemed to be sold out yet. I'd say Dutch Monkey is a cross between a donut and pastry shop: in addition to some creative donuts, they also had fritters and some amazing fruit pastries. The caramel apple fritter was delectable, and the salted caramel donut stick was straight out of a gourmet candy shop -- mmmm! They have an assortment of sweet and savory donuts, some that are topped with ultra-sweet gooey-ness, and others that are stuffed with jellies and fillings. The donuts were more dense and bread-like than I generally prefer, but the toppings and fun of it certainly made up for that. I'd recommend asking for a to-go box and then buying a few varieties -- you'll get to try a bunch and you'll definitely have some to take home for later, after your sugar-high wears off! read more
