I hate technology. It's hot in there (it's mostly windows) Story: my wife had a craving for doughnuts off the beaten path. She heard of Dutch Monkey somewhere and we made the one hour trip. It's a lovely drive, until you get to Cumming. It's just not a pretty town. But, it's pretty easy to find the doughnut shop. Good thing too, as the GPS was a tad confused on location. Parking is great. The shop is a bit warm inside, though it's mostly windows. It is just part of life during summertime in Georgia. The staff was friendly and the owner was onsite. The doughnuts are fresh and tasty. Of our choices we rate them as follows: 1- the cinnamon roll. It's to die for. 2- the caramel apple fritter. The best I've had. 3- the Boston cream. Super yummy 4- the lemon merengue. VERY TART. 5- the blueberry lemon ginger fritter. A little too over the top for me. 6- the Dutch Monkey. It's good but not amazing. The chocolate was a bit overpowering for me. Would I go back? If in Cumming for business or passing through, I would. But it's not enough to make me drive a two hour round trip again. I got a dozen of some assorted doughnuts and not a single one was a miss. Staff was friendly. Yes it is pricey for a doughnut, you'll spend $4-5 per donut but it's the perfect little tasty treat. Fun, eclectic coffeehouse feel starting with the front windows hand painted for the holidays. Service was friendly and interactive for our first visit. The drip coffee was local and had enough flavor as a black cup without any cream or sugar. The donut holes were quickly enjoyed by the kids. I had the chocolate peanut butter knot and a Chai latte. I stopped by around 12:30 when it was quieter, and I'm pretty sure I got the last chocolate peanut butter knot. It was delicious! The dough was light and airy. The peanut butter icing was sweet and not overpowering. I would get this again. Even though it was quiet, there was still a steady flow of foot traffic. Many of these customers were ordering the frozen take and bake. I am not a regular and had to look it up. It's a frozen pack of 9 cinnamon rolls that you defrost overnight and bake in the morning. This used to be our favorite doughnut place. We visited regularly about two years ago. The doughnuts were always fresh and amazing flavors. Today we visited again while in the area and it was so disappointing. The staff was nice and helpful with good attitude. We had a blueberry lemon and cardamom fritter (good flavor and fresh), a caramel bar (we found a big hair in the glazed they immediately replaced it and apologize), 2 latte coffees (not very good coffee flavor and definitely lukewarm) and some doughnut holes (super dry and chewy not fresh at all). The place looks super messy, the aisle to go to the bathroom is the storage area and it's a big mess. The bathrooms were not entirely clean and messy. I think the staff response to the hair incident was good and we know this things could happened. Definitely they need to go back to fresh bread with amazing flavors and improve the coffee and do some cleaning in the storage area. read more

All the employees were wearing masks and were friendly. We got iced coffees (small: $2.25, large: $2.95), which were good. Reasonably priced. For donuts, we got a dozen: Nutella Twist x2, Cinnamon Roll x2, Buttermilk Cake with Blueberry Icing x2, Dutch Monkey x2, Boston Cream x2, Chocolate Cake, and "Not" Samoa. My personal ranking, in order from favorite to least favorite: 1. Buttermilk Cake with Blueberry Icing and Pecans 2. Cinnamon Roll 3. Chocolate Cake 4. Dutch Monkey 5. Boston Cream 6. "Not" Samoa 7. Nutella Twist I think we should've stuck to the more plain ones because most of the ones we got just felt like they were doing too much. We definitely liked the cake-based donuts better. As for price, we spent $38 total (including 2 iced coffees, with tax). Their prices for donuts ranged from $1.35-$3.35. They do give a dozen discount, which was $3.42. Don't get me wrong...they are good but I think this place has been so hyped up for me that I was expecting phenomenal. The Dutch monkey is probably my favorite, followed by the Boston cream but I still have yet to try the Nutella. I grabbed a couple dozen or so for a recent all-day work meeting in the area. Service was great and the online ordering is super convenient. My husband has had DM before and did say (after sampling some leftovers) that they weren't as good as before. I mean, still really good donuts and I'd totally have them again, I just "donut" think I'd go much out of my way specifically for them. read more

Whenever I am in Cumming, which isn't often anymore, I try to make a stop at Dutch Monkey. It's a cute little shop that offers a variety of creative flavors as well as coffee. I have tried most of their donut flavors as well as their cappuccinos and lattes. They serve both yeast and cake donuts. I'm partial to yeast donuts, though. My favorite donut flavors are: salted caramel, nutella, and lemon meringue. I am not a big fan of lemon flavor, but was pleasantly surprised by their lemon meringue. I thought it would be more tart, but it wasn't! I am a sucker for anything (salted) caramel and they do a great job with theirs. In fact, they offer two salted caramel donut options: one with chocolate and nuts and one without. I prefer the one without. The nutella filling is whipped, so it's light and fluffy. At my last visit, I tried the dutch monkey flavor. The staff member who was helping me explained that it's dulce de leche filled, but I didn't taste that. Instead, the filling tasted more like peanut butter. That was a bit disappointing. I like peanut butter, but I wanted to taste the dulce de leche. The chocolate and banana were a nice touch, though. The coffee is strong. The staff is always polite and helpful. The donuts start at $1.35 (tier 1) each and go up to $3.85 (tier 6). A bit pricey, but these donuts are gourmet and delicious. The kids love watching the kitchen staff make donuts throught the glass windows on the side. Parking is limited, but most customers go in and out in just a few minutes.
