Dutch Monkey is the champion of Atlanta doughnuts. I am literally sitting here struggling on how to write a proper review that does Dutch Monkey justice. The numerous varieties, the windows allowing you to peek in on the "assembly line", the aroma, and good God, the taste. From the signature "Dutch Monkey" to a simple "Raised Glazed", everything is a winner. They will have something for everyone, everyday. The location, while a significant drive north from downtown Atlanta, is easy to get to, and well worth the trip. I suggest making a mini day trip out of it and catch a matinee at the theater across the street, then grabbing lunch at one of the many places in the area. I love a good doughnut and have been here several times but just don't like this place. While they have a wide assortment of interesting looking doughnuts, they are consistently tough and chewy. You can always tell if a shop knows how to make a good doughnut by trying just the plain ole glazed. It should be soft and melt in your mouth. These are more like eating a piece of bread. I haven't tried a doughnut from Dutch Monkey that I didn't love, and I've tried a lot of them!! My favorites are the tiramisu (I don't think they make them very often, but it is heavenly), German chocolate cake, maple bacon buttermilk cake and buttered maple bacon, and fresh fruit bars (strawberry and nectarine are so good). Honestly, all their doughnuts are delicious, particularly their cake ones - they are the perfect lightness, moistness, and sweetness. Maybe their prices are a little higher than some other doughnut places, but it's worth it. Also, the owners are so nice; they are active in the community and support some great causes. We love going to the 4th of July doughnut eating contests! read more

Heard about Dutch Monkey from a friend so trekked up to Cumming to try them out. First thing I noticed was the wall of sound from the kids running wild everywhere--not the owners' fault, but it sure deducted from the experience. Second thing was that there was the poor layout of the place--no discernible line forming, so people just pushed and shoved to get their order in regardless of who was there first. But we were there for the doughnuts, not the distractions. Tried the lemon meringue, which was good. Then the chocolate covered, also good. Both, however, were a little heavy--not light and fresh as I'd expected. Variety was impressive, and they were good; just not as great as I'd hoped for the price. read more

I have no idea why anyone would not give 5 stars to this amazing place. If you live too far away, that is not their fault. If little kids annoy you, sorry, but that is their mama's or papa's fault, not that of the owners. If you get to a fresh doughnut shop just before closing, do not expect them to have a full assortment for you - how wasteful would that be? Back to the doughnuts - ADDICTIVE! I have to slow myself down to only once every two weeks. I brought them for our Wednesday morning meeting and you would have thought I was a goddess. Seriously, these are wonderful, very heavy pastries. The Dutch Monkey is as decadent as the other reviewers have said, and must weigh a pound. Maple bars have a very, very good maple flavor, and even the most simple of cake doughnuts are obviously made with care and training not often found in a small bakery such as this. I took my two boys, 2 and 5, and I was worried about the mess they were going to make, but Holy Moly, they were not the culprits. With doughnuts that are made fresh every day, this place is a little slice of heaven. The menu rotates and is updated daily on-line so you know what's available before you even hit the door. The inside of the shop is neat and clean and very family friendly. There is an area with a mini-picnic table for the little ones and you can also take them to one of the portholes to see how the doughnuts are made... If my daughter didn't love the doughnuts so much she would be completely content with watching the work being done in the kitchen the whole time we're there. As stated before, the doughnuts are made fresh daily and are just divine. There are fruity inspirations every day (which satisfies my tastes) and chocolate creations aplenty (which my wife thoroughly enjoys). My favorites by far are any of the various peanut butter creme configurations (bars, long john's, bismarks) with the cinnamon twists/knots being a close second. I'm not a coffee drinker, but my wife is and she really likes the coffee as well. I really like the freshly made strawberry milk to wet my whistle. If you're a North Atlanta guy or gal craving doughnuts that will surpass your usual trip to Dunkin' or Krispy Kreme, then Dutch Monkey Doughnuts is the best place in town. I've read many reviews that say Sublime offers the better doughnut, and that may be true, but unless you are living or working in Atlanta, Dutch Monkey is your best bet. For those of us outside the perimeter, we may not want to brave morning rush hour through Atlanta for a doughnut. And why would we when have our own delicious, gourmet bakery close to home? There is a wide and creative selection at DM, varying from the actual Dutch Monkey doughnut, a chocolate iced doughnut filled with a banana cream, and topped with fresh banana slices, to your regular glazed or cinnamon roll. Each doughnut is extremely filling, unlike Sublime, and it's like you are getting your own individual sized cake made especially for you. And while you are grabbing your two boxes of donuts, you will want to try them all, make sure to order a coffee (my favorite is the mocha) or a hot chocolate. Imagine a brick of cocoa at the end of your straw, topped with homemade marshmallows. If you're a chocolate lover, you will not be disappointed. If you want a fast bite to eat, then watch out for weekends. Like all amazing restaurants and bakeries, the weekends are always busy. Have children? They will love the experience of watching chefs make donuts through the small, circular windows in the wall. Hate children? Then you better watch out for weekends, or get out of bed early, because it can be a little noisy. Although the price is more expensive than an average doughnut shop, you can feel better about your purchase knowing that they use direct trade coffee, recyclable boxes from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, and recycle their frying oil into biodiesel. I read the other reviews, some from ITP folk, and my first thought was "How the HECK did these people get IN this place- when it's open- to chew and Yelp?" I LIVE up here, am retired, and could not get in, ah, until today at 2:15. Place was full of high school teens from next door standing around in no discernible order, talking their collective heads off, not eating, not drinking, just blocking my access to the "order" counter (!!!!). Courtly old gentleman that I am, I burrowed through Muffy and Biff and their cohort and popped up in front of the glass display case which was laden with eye popping goodies. I ordered two glazed cake, two chocolate glazed cake, four enormous twisted crullers, and one apple cinnamon cowpie-looky-thingie. "No, I'll take them to go, please, so I can bite and taste in peace." Schlepped out, shook off all the testosterone and estrogen bits that rubbed off on me like beggar lice during my zigzag exit,, plus a couple of "and I went"s and an "Oh my gawd!", and rolled home. Verdict: The cowpie-looky-thingie doesn't taste anything like it looks. Just close your eyes, trust me, and bite. The crullers were more bready-yeasty than I'm used to but they're good if you adjust your preconceptions. Plus, each one is the size of FOUR Krispy Kremes-urp. Wife loved the cake varieties. I have been dreaming about this place for weeks. I finally went this morning and it was a huge letdown.. Service was awful. I ordered 2 donuts and 2 cappuccinos. I was finished with my donuts before they fixed the cappuccinos. I had to go to the counter twice to check on drinks. They offered me another drink, but I figured if they couldn't get the first one out, then what could they offer to replace it. Donuts were fair and very expensive. The doughnuts may be good, but this place is dirty. My husband and I went to Dutch Monkey for the 2nd time today after seeing them win Doughnut Wars on tv. Needing a quick restroom visit, I made may way to the back and the moment I opened the door to the restroom, I could tell this room is not deep cleaned regularly. The floor was gross, the handicap rails were filthy and the toilet had not been scrubbed in quite a while. I'm afraid this owner believes a glad plugin is all it takes. On my way back out to order, I stopped to look in their windows that show off the kitchen and once again, not clean. Now, let me be specific. The doughnut machines looked very clean, but the rest of the kitchen had not been truly cleaned in quite a while, the layers of flour covered filth on and under the shelves and and floor had taken some time to accumulate. It makes me wonder what dirt, grime and other unknowns lurk behind the scenes if they are not ashamed of the dirt they have right out in the open. read more
