The donuts were fine but not amazing and the price was pretty high for a donut. I just don't think the value is there.

I tried Dutch Monkey Doughnuts today for the first time and I would have to say I have mixed opinions about this place. The moment I walked in, I noticed the cashier was not the most joyful. A hello would have been nice, but instead she was kind of quiet and meh. I will say, I have been eyeing the daily menu for about a week now, and by the time I am able to make my way there, many of the donuts I would want to try are sold out. So, I tell myself I will go another day. Luckily, today there was a tropical storm, so they had a lot of donuts available and I decided to try it out. I got the strawberry bar, not a Samoa, crunch donut, and cinnamon roll. Given the cinnamon roll and strawberry bar are always sold out, I guess I had high expectations, but in fact, those were my least favorite. Nowhere near a delicious Cinnabon and the strawberry bar was just nothing to call home about. The "not a Samoa", however, was delicious and the crunch donut. The base of the donut was more cake-like, rather than yeasty. The chocolate frosting tasted really fresh and not artificial. I would definitely try other flavors again, but as of right now, I would say they are average for the price. read more

I went to Dutch Monkey Doughnuts yesterday to cheer on Yelp Atlanta's own Brent H, the "Guru of Glaze," in the 4th annual Independence Day doughnut eating competition. Brent blew away the other contestants, including his own father (a surprise contestant), by consuming 41 doughnuts in 15 minutes. This shattered his previous record of 31 doughnuts from last year. What a beast. Much respect to all competitors for subjecting their bodies to such a rapid influx of dough and sugar. Two of the five competitors appeared as though they were going to vomit midway through the contest. Fortunately, no incidents like that actually occurred. The store is located in Cumming, near GA 400 exit 13. That's about 32 miles from Midtown. Yesterday's event was the perfect opportunity for me to finally try these doughnuts, which I've heard so much about. Dutch Monkey is located in a small strip mall at the corner of Peachtree Parkway and Ronald Reagan Boulevard. The store has a nice, almost boutique-like, build-out with plenty of seating. There's even miniature seating for the kiddies. The space feels like a cafe. At the beginning of the ordering line, there are windows you can peek through to see the kitchen. Doughnuts are made from scratch daily. The staff recommends eating them within the first 12 hours after they come out from the fryer. You'll never be served an old doughnut here. There are well over a dozen different doughnut varieties, priced anywhere from $1.25 to $2.75 each. I'm not aware of any special pricing for orders of a dozen or more. In addition to doughnuts, other pastries like cinnamon rolls and Nutella twists are available. The store serves Counter Culture Coffee and assorted teas, milk, hot chocolate, and other doughnut-friendly beverages. I tried a bag of doughnut holes (six holes for $1.25), a Dutch Crumb doughnut ($1.75), a Boston Cream doughnut ($2.25), and the official competition-fried Buttermilk Cake minis. The doughnut holes are made from what appears to be basic glazed doughnuts. While I'm not doughnut connoisseur, I thought the doughnut holes didn't taste too different from standard Krispy Kreme or Dunkin' Donuts doughnut holes. That's not necessarily a bad thing because they're all tasty. I just expected something a bit different coming from a local mom and pop shop like Dutch Monkey. The Dutch Crumb doughnut is a doughnut topped with chocolate icing and fine chocolate cookie crumbs. I heard they're Oreo crumbs. This wasn't a bad doughnut, but a little too dry for my taste. I enjoyed the Boston Cream doughnut more. This doughnut was topped with two kinds of icing (mostly chocolate) and generously filled with rich and sweet-but-not-too-sweet cream. Quite delicious. If you like cream-filled pastries, I recommend this one. My unexpected favorite was the Buttermilk Cake doughnut. Wow. These folks know how to make an excellent cake doughnut. They're arguably the best I've ever had. The chefs seem to have tweaked both the taste and consistency of this doughnut to near perfection. Definitely try the Buttermilk Cake doughnuts. They're sweet, denser than the typical doughnut, but still soft and have melt-in-your-mouth-like qualities. The mini version of these doughnuts are the ones used in the July 4th competition. Good staff and friendly service. All proceeds from the event went to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. If you don't live/work in/around Cumming, I'm not sure these doughnuts alone are worth the drive. However, if you happen to be in the area, you most certainly should go. Note the store closes early (4pm) each day. read more

One of the things I look forward to most when visiting the N. Premium Outlets is stopping by Dutch Monkey Doughnuts on the way back. Dutch Monkey is located up in Cumming which is normally a far drive for me ... but when I go to the outlets, it's like it's meant to be :) Their donuts are awesome. I'd put their donuts more in the dessert category than breakfast ... and their prices reflect that ($1.25 to $3.75 each). So many tempting flavors to choose from so you'll likely spend more than you intended to :) Everything I've had is good here - I esp. like all the bismarcks. My latest new favorite is their Passion Fruit Coconut Lime Bismarck ($2.25) which was featured on Food Network's Donut Showdown. Other good ones I've tried - Mango Bismarck, Lemon Meringue ($2.25 - the Yelp favorite, and rated "most beautiful" by me), Chocolate Iced Buttermilk Cake ($1.25), Dutch Monkey ($2.75), Peanut Butter Buttercream ($2.25), Maple Bar ($1.75), and Salted Caramel ($2.25). Doughnuts are some of man's best creations. How can I resist the temptation of doughnuts?! I stopped in early Saturday morning for a quick pick me up before a baby shower. I'm not usually in Cumming so I intended to take full advantage of the situation. As fate would have it, this doughnut shop was right on the path to the shower. So I had no excuse to avoid Dutch Monkey. Parking was easy, although I could see parking filling up quite easily. I scored a spot right in front. It was pretty busy inside, with a winding line to order donuts and caffeine. It seemed like a pretty quick wait, though, since I was busy being indecisive. I settled on the chocolate sour cream with chocolate icing and a nonfat latte. Seating is pretty limited, especially when it's busy. I noticed a man telling his breakfast companion, "so many people now, I hate it." I'm guessing once the shopping center across the street opened up, more people noticed the Dutch Monkey. While looking for a national coffee chain on the way to the N. GA wineries, I literally stumbled on this place! I'd had Dutch monkey bookmarked for a while, but had completely forgot about it, until it showed up as a coffee shop in the area. Needless to say, I got many more calories than just a coffee! I was a little over whelmed while looking at the cabinet filled with decadent, beautifully topped doughnuts! Everything looked so delicious! Since it was nearly noon, I decided to go with the butter maple bacon, and the BF chose the apple cinnamon fritter. My doughnut would have been delicious, if it would have been warmed in the oven for a few minutes - I'll have to remember that for next time! The apple fritter was absolutely awesome! It was a big block of fluffy dough with cinnamon & apples, fried to perfection, the covered in cinnamon & sugar! Yum! The coffee was pretty delicious as well! These donuts were absolutely delicious but be warned - these donuts weren't meant to be consumed as breakfast. This is strictly dessert served at 10 am on a full stomach. We made the mistake of coming here in the morning (these guys should really open during the afternoon) and ate these bad boys on an empty stomach. Safe to say - we regretted it all day. The Nutella was really good, the buttercream tasted more like whipped cream to me which I wasn't a big fan of. Coffee was phenomenal, 10/10 recommend (I'm not normally a fan of coffee). I love this donut shop. The donuts are so freakin' good. The coffee is just as good. I could sit in the shop and eat donuts and drink coffee like it were my job. I was so sad when I bit into my donut. I've been eyeing this place for a while, but we always seem to drive by when they are closed. I would give them a 4 for creativity, friendly staff, and a good atmosphere, but the donuts were not very good at all. We actually threw them away! I completely understand paying $5 for two gourmet donuts. I was prepared for that, but they better be good donuts! I got a coffee buttercream donut which was drizzled with semisweet chocolate and a Boston cream. The donut does not have much flavor at all and they are so fried that you can taste it! My mom got a twist and hers was the same. It's a shame because they were so beautiful! We didn't try the coffee, so maybe have that instead. I have always been on the hunt for good donuts (I have reviewed Bon Glaze earlier on yelp). A recent reddit post had a few people vouch for Dutch Monkey. So with that in mind and today being Donut day (Free donuts were advertised so more to sample) I decided to make some time to go out of the way and drive to this popular location I had heard of for a few years but never been to yet. So with some anticipation build up all day during which I checked their socials to ensure there were no surprises...I took a late lunch break and drove over to the spot. Its located in a hub of sorts. Pulled up in the lot and walked in... the place is charming for sure. I could see myself spend hours hanging out here since the vibes from the setup are cosy and warm. As I walked towards the counter though, things didnt look as good. They only had 4 varieties left... 3 of which were (as my receipt defines them...) tier 3 and one of which was a tier 1 (more basic) donut. The donuts did not look anything special. But since it was a 30 minute drive here I decided to pick one of each except the bacon sprinkled tier 3 kind. If this place was closer, I would not have picked as many, since there was nothing special about what was left to pick from. I also grabbed a fritter to try and see if their brilliance went past donuts. Got rung up (No free donuts as their site advertised!) and proceeded to sample the wares. In one word: disappointing The efforts made to get here were not worth it. The fritters felt like biting through oily bread. There was texture to it that told me there were jalapenos etc in there as I took a bite but in terms of flavor it was one dimensional and pretty bland But the bigger disappointments were the donuts...The donuts were not anywhere as good as a Bon Glaze or Da Vinci or a Duck Donuts. To be fair to them maybe their other varieties (from pictures online) might be good/popular/creative. The tier 3s... peanut butter covered and chocolate donut they had for sale were a notch below average. The tier 1...Buttermilk donut was decent in texture and the lack of sweetness works in its favor For the price and the posts in the past, I expected more. Now they close at 4 pm, I got in at 2 pm. So I am not sure if lack of options is the risk you run by coming in at that hour... But I do not think I will be finding out if that is the case. Going out of your way for pretty average tier 3 donuts isnt the best way to spend a friday afternoon. I'll be stopping by one of the other mentioned stores later today instead. They have variety, pricing, availability, creativity going for them which Dutch Monkey did not. +s: The people at the counter working there were polite and nice. The service here is awesome! The people running the counter patiently explain any questions you may have, they have really unique flavors here as well. It's like classic donuts but the flavors make them gourmet! I LOVED the Samoa donut. I also really enjoyed that the donuts were not sickly sweet. I had read that Dutch Monkey Donuts were on a par with Voodoo Donuts out of Portland. I have not had Voodoo but have heard raves. Sadly, I tried s Stone Fruit donut, raised glazed donut, a strawberry bar and a Sugar and Cinnamon Apple Fritter. My favorite raised glazed donut is from Krispy Kreme. Dutch Monkey's was very dense and more like a cake donut. The fritter was greasy, not as good as Dunkin Donuts. The Stone fruit was quite heavy and not a great filling. The strawberry bar was ok. Reminiscent of pound cake with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. Very disappointed and expensive. read more

One helped me select a dozen donuts to take home, and the other talked to me about coffee options. They provided me a great experience. "The best thing I've ever shoved in my face....EVER!!" Yeah, I tend to say that a lot which means I either over-exaggerate (Moi? Never!) or I suffer from some kind of oral fixation disorder. But hey, you tell me... if you had a choice between shoving one of DMD's in your face vs.... oh, lets say....wait, where am I going with this? NEVERMIND... gotta stay on track. Once again it's July 4th and I'm looking to avoid the city during the road race. This was my first visit to DMD and was joined by fellow Yelpers attending the doughnut eating competition to watch the Guru of Glaze devour 40 (41?) rings of sweet, vanilla, fluffy goodness. It was a fun time, I'll be sure to pop up next year. While I was here I tried some of the yummy offerings. The few doughnuts I tried were delicious but my favorite was the Not Samoas. To describe it? Heaven, bliss, my sunshine followed by the moon, a highly persuasive motivator to get me to move OTP with caramel drizzled on top and coconut shavings. Just thinking about them as I write this makes me want 46 of 'em right now. I've never had a Cronut but I'd pay money that a nugget of cakey Not Samoas happiness wins in a taste competition. Who's the paranoid ITP'er with a short attention span? ME!!! This was a long arse drive from Midtown so next time I'll need to plan accordingly. I wouldn't be surprised if DMD is two blocks from the TN Aquarium. My single frustration with this place is the distance, it totally impedes on my gluttonous desires. Due to its inconvenient location (for my own selfish needs) I must now attempt to curtail my cravings for when I can get up there, which is rarely. Yes: Dutch Monkey is worth all the hype - I was skeptical prior to my visit, I have fairly high expectations for places with such hype and they usually end up falling short; but without a doubt, these are the best doughnuts I've ever had. Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts (goes without saying) don't hold a candle to DMD, I've yet to go to Sublime, but I've had a few of their selections at 'Bantam + Biddy', but I much prefer Revolution - I love Revolution, but in comparison to DMD - DMD wins out. It's the fluffiness, the sheer fluffiness, and the fact that they're not overwhelmingly sweet. They have a large variety of doughnuts - their pastry case looks like heaven. Reading the various names of each doughnut/pastry makes it nearly impossible to pass it up. We ended up walking away with three doughnuts - mainly due to indecision, it's quite busy in the mornings - especially on the weekend, and a line was quickly forming behind us. The three we chose were a "Not Samoa", " Passion Fruit Coconut Lime Bismarck", and a lemon meringue. Every single bite was delicious, my favorite of the three was the passion fruit - there was a slight hint of tangy, combined with the sweetness that has evoked dreams. Unfortunately, when we visited, none of the bacon doughnuts were available, and DMD is quite the drive for me. Worth it though. They are so creative in their flavor choices, but please note that these are same-day doughnuts - unless you take them home and freeze them. Since this is so far from me, I tend to buy a dozen and eat a little of everything and share. My faves are Lemon Meringue, Dutch Monkey, Coffee Buttercream, Maple Bacon, and just about anything Chocolate (not nutella). Their Fritters are absolutely to die for - you have to try them. Their doughnuts are very sweet - so you need water or coffee to pair with them to help cut the sweetness, but this is not a bad thing. Arpana and Martin just know what they are doing - they focus on fresh, quality ingredients and a high-quality product. I love business where the owners make themselves known and really stand behind their products. I only wish they were closer to me...or maybe it is better then aren't? They have some nice tables if you want to hangout and socialize. The food I will say I wasn't that impressed maybe because all of the hype from people. I tried at a dozen different donuts and the only two were ones I would go back for. The Nutella Twist was had good flavor and was something that unique you couldn't get most places. However the rest to me weren't any better than the donuts I get anywhere else. I will say I since I only tried a 10-12 of the many flavors I am going to give it 3 stars. The verdict I paid 30.45 for a dozen donuts so they are nut cheap. I really need to back and try a few more to make sure. It was the end of the day. I was looking for an easy place to grab a warm beverage and some wifi. I'd heard about the greatness of Dutch Monkey, and they did not disappoint. Because it was the end of the day, they were a bit low on stock. What this says to me is that they manage themselves well. Their product is in demand. And of the limited things that were left on the counter, I enjoyed the chai donut. But the real winner, which I took home to share with my Mom, was a semi-savory pineapple-jalapeno fritter.
