I was in the area the other day so decided to stop by this place since I've been craving gourmet doughnuts. I came around noon and there was a good selection of sweets to choose from. I wanted to try everything but decided to not be too gluttonous and only stuck with a few things. I tried the fresh strawberry bar, a bar that had chocolate and bacon on top, a lemon meringue doughnut, a ginger peach jelly filled doughnut, a cinnamon apple fritter, two plain doughnuts (one yeast and one cake version), and doughnut holes. I still went a little overboard but I don't live in the area so I felt that I got a good variety of things. Everything came out to be about $20. I found everything to be just ok. The strawberry bar and lemon meringue were my favorite out of the bunch but they aren't good enough for me to drive all the way back here. read more

Doughnuts are creative and crafted well, highly edible, but not overly incredible. The namesake Dutch Monkey doughnut is cream filled, adorned with sliced bananas and a very good chocolate ganache. They have rotating flavors, today's specials featured peanut butter buttercream, Boston cream, coffee buttercream, Dutch crumb, chocolate mint, along with various standard doughnuts, fritters and logs. The doughnuts are a bit denser then I like, but the flavors are spot on. Service here is excellent. Coffee is really good. Overall it is a terrific option this far north if you need a doughnut fix. Don't you just love it when a business lives up to the yelp hype? Two friends and I ended up here for breakfast around 10:30 on a Saturday morning. Quite hungry, we decided to get six different donuts for us to share and a couple of coffees. Little did we know this was grossly underestimating the deliciousness and also the richness of these treats. One donut will be more than enough for all but the hungriest and biggest of appetites, though your taste buds will be begging for more. Everything we tried was great, but it was a surprise to me that the much yelped maple-bacon donut was actually my least favorite. Most favorite definitely goes to a lemon meringue donut, which was filled with what tasted like homemade perfectly tart lemon curd and topped with a lightly torched whirl of meringue instead of icing. Tied for second were the nutella filled eclair and the buttermilk poundcake topped with slices of fresh farmer's market Georgia peaches. Just typing those flavors is making my mouth water, and making me count down the days till I can make another Dutch Monkey run. Quite honestly, these leave Sublime Donuts behind in the dust. The Dutch Monkey experience is superior in every possible way, from donuts, to coffee, to service, to setting. It is owned by a couple of culinary graduates, Who worked in restaurants and decided to open a doughnut shop offering the best donuts out there. The donuts are handmade every morning, so they are super fresh. Walking up, I noticed a small area to sit outside and eat when the weather is nice. Walking inside, the place is always packed. They offer many varieties, and a lot of them are very creative. We have tried the butter cream stick, Boston cream, the chocolate glazed, the glazed doughnut holes, red velvet, cinnamon sugar, and s'mores. Personal preference, but I did not care for the Smore's. The Boston cream is good but the cream is more custardy and thick then I typically like. The glazed holes are good, but typical. All the donuts taste very fresh, and I love that about them. My friend turned me onto them several months ago and I wish I could remember what doughnuts she had ordered because they were all so so good. Accompaniments to the doughnuts include coffee, espresso, tea, milk, and juices. I found it amusing that Dutch Monkey is next to a pediatrics office. I'm sure a lot of parents bribe their kids with doughnuts after appointments. Pastries are priced from $1.35 to $3.85. The young lady assisting us was knowledgeable and quite polite. We sampled the following: *Boston Cream--Our favorite. And it must be a lot of people's favorites since it sold out before a second one could be purchased. I supposed it was for the best? *Mango Ginger--I really liked this selection. It's coated in granulated sugar, not a glaze. The mango ginger filing reminded me slightly of applesauce, but it was quite smooth and not too sweet. *Dutch Monkey--This one has a dulce de leche filling and ganache glaze with banana slices. Not bad. *Lemon Meringue--The lemon filling was really notable: not too tart and not too sugary. The confection is topped with a meringue which reminded me of marshmallow fluff and a dusting of powdered sugar. *Peanut Butter Bismark--This doughnut reminded me of a chocolate peanut butter pie in a hole shape. Just give me the filling and forget the doughnut. Yummy. I think what really sets Dutch Monkey apart is their fillings. While doughnut stuffings at some place like Dunkin' remind me of mass-made jam from the grocery store, you can truly taste the quality that goes into 'em here. My honey had given me a taste of some chocolate covered doughnuts from here a couple months back, so I was excited when we decided to do a detour here for my son on our way to Church last Sunday. We all love doughnuts in this family but my son is the ultimate doughnut eater. Pulled up and the place was pretty busy. We walked in and hardly anybody was talking. It was like a scene from the Twilight Zone. This was a plus, as every single person in there was stuffing themselves silly. The people that were talking only did so bc they were about to start their next doughnut (probably to tell the other person they were starting their next doughnut). We ordered two cinnamon doughnuts, one Boston creme and one mini hole. It didn't take much coaxing to get my son to eat his (he was upset about going to Church, hence the stop to get his attitude adjusted). Little man chowed them down and promptly said they were his second favorite doughnuts. That in my book earns 4 stars. My doughnut was really good but the custard inside was a little thicker than my preference. My honey ate her doughnut hole so fast, I didn't really get a verdict from her. I doubt she even tasted it. I'm looking forward to a second return trip here to taste test more but pretty sure this might be our stop on future trips to Church with my son. read more

The lady in the drive-thru window put up a menu, which was very convenient. She was super nice and pleasant. Not usually a donut fan, but these were fantastic. Some of the donuts sampled were blueberry lemon ginger fritter, chocolate chip twist, strawberry and cream sandwich, and few others. Their dough is similar to other shops, nothing spectacular or special, some donuts are smaller than others so get 2 if you like your carbs with coffee. However service is always top notch, love everyone who works here. Only reason for 3 stars is price-to-quality-to-quantity being off, feels like overpaying for novelty flavors, not quality of donuts. They do bars, specialty donuts, and some really nice pastries as well. A little on the pricier side, but you get what you pay for. Went on a Saturday and it was very busy. With the long line we thought it was going to be good. There is no menu listed so you must wait until you get to the window to see what they have or walk in. We ordered to large coffees, 2 glazed and two cinnamon rolls. Did not care for the glazed doughnuts as it seemed like a cross between cake and yeast. It was on my list to try for over a year but I never made it out there because it is so far from where I live. I was going to the outlet mall so I decided to finally make a trip. I went on a Sunday at about 2 PM. I got an assortment of donuts which included the maple bar, raised glazed donut, strawberry glazed, and the chocolate glazed donut. Unfortunately, these donuts were not good. They were stale and I did not like the chocolate glaze on the chocolate glazed donut. The strawberry glaze was good, but donut underneath was not so I just peeled off the glazed part and ate that. I was not impressed with these donuts and will stick with my favorite Atlanta shops. read more
