Tony and I had lunch at the Dutchman's Daughter in Fairmont today on our way home from Ruby Hospital in Morgantown. I had the Beef Liver & Onions with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy with Buttered Corn on side ( wished I had gotten the Hot Homemade Applesauce). Tony got a Steak Hoagie with Mayo, Lettuce & Tomato with chips. He was not very pleased! It was more like a Veggie Hoagie with a sparse topping of Hot Chopped up Beef...it was mainly lettuce for $9.95... he was pissed!!! I told waitress and cashier and neither offered to discount the sandwich but just said "Ohhhh!!" Like poor baby....or something not very customer friendly. But Liver was good!! Stopped in for lunch with my parents. Thought it was a nicely decorated place and very clean. My Dad ordered the soup beans and cornbread (later said it was average) my Mom ordered a steak sandwich (later said it was ok) and I ordered cabbage and kielbasa. We went about talking. Probably 10 minutes later the waitress comes out and puts my parents plates in front of them and then walks away. I'm thinking she will be right back. 5 minutes later I've seen her walk by several times without a word. Finally I flag her down and tell her I still haven't been served. She said, "I'm so sorry, somehow the order didn't make it to the kitchen. It'll be right out. I wait another 20 minutes, at this point my parents are completely finished with their food which I may add they waited to start eating because they wanted to actually have lunch with me. Finally she comes out with my food and lays a horrid looking dish in front of me. It looked like someone cut up cabbage, very very very low end kielbasa (I honestly thought it was a hotdog) and red potatoes, threw it all in boiling water with no seasoning whatsoever, slightly strained it off, dumped it in a bowl and threw a dash of dried parsley flakes on top. We were first time visitors! The enviorment was nice. The wife ordered the pork sandwich with gravy & mashed potatos. She said the pork was really good, but the gravy was a bit salty. I ordered the country fried steak, gravy and a house salad with a side of potato salad. For some reason no bread came with either dinner. The country fried steak, gravy and salad were as good as anywhere else (not better or any worse). But the side of potato salad was the worst I've EVER tried. It tased like someone had boiled them in well water. It had a horrible (and I mean horrible) sulpher taste. The sweet tea was good, but they didn't have lemon, they gave me a package of a dried crystal lemon flavoring though. The wait staff seemed friendly! We didn't find anything special here, course we didn't try everything either! I would recommend everyone trying it - but warn aginst ordering that tater salad!!! read more

Place is great, but they do not have breakfast. I wanted to start with this, because as an out-of-towner who was about to get back on the interstate - we were looking for a late breakfast. I want a nice person to serve us, but I don't want to explain half my life story before getting a cup of coffee. I digress - food was good, wasn't over-priced, seemed like everyone kinda knew each other. I liked it. *Potato salad is worth a try. I will note this though, and I do NOT want to offend, or spark a religious debate, there was a LOT of Jesus in this place. I am not a person who thinks religion should be everywhere we go, but I also come from a different region of the country. Sometimes, in NY, we see small symbols of a business owner's religion in a place, but not like they had in here. I wasn't bothered by it at all, I get "different strokes...", but something I thought worth noting...almost like you were visiting your church going Gramma's house and she really likes bible quotes. Again - I am sure this is probably the norm in mountainside WV, and truth be told I embrace that difference. Visited here for the first time with a party of 4. Found a table on the 2nd level. We went on a night that had all you can eat spaghetti. Two of us ordered that, I had a steak sandwich, and the other ordered a different sandwich. They enjoyed their spaghetti but getting a second serving took over 25 minutes. They were pretty busy and we didn't see much of our server. The salad that came with the meals was good and the dressings were homemade. I have never been more disgusted by a restaurant. I ordered the daily special (Thursday)- a pork sandwich. The green beans were straight from a can with a pound of butter. The "gravy" was gelatinous and also from a can. The bread for the sandwich was plain white bread- nothing fancy here! I will leave here hungry and regret walking into this poor establishment. Oh and don't come here if you have any expectations of customer service; the waitress spent more time sitting with her friends and chatting than keeping our glasses full. We found a bid table that needed an extra seat. So we sat there and asked for a seat to be add for a child that was 5. The waitress was HORRIBLE from that point on. She argued with us to sit at the front room which my mom there did not want to sit there because it is really dark in that room. So we didn't go and stayed where we were sitting. While we were ordering drink she cut my mom off and while ordering food for my nephew she cut my sister in law off. She never did a refill on out waters. I started out loving this place, and recommended them to alot of people, the food was great, and I love the atmosphere. But the last time I was there I paid closer attention to the bill and realized they charged me for 4 sides. On the menu it says that two sides are included with the meal, and the waitress asks what your two sides are gona be when you order. No where does it say you are getting charged extra for each one of those sides. When I brought that to the attention of the lady at the register she was dismissive and could care less.
