I've always enjoyed Aquarium Lounge. It has a great atmosphere and good drinks and appetizers. I recently had a full dinner there and I was sadly disappointed. I was excited to start with the Roasted Red Pepper soup but unfortunately it tasted very little like red peppers. My date tasted it as well and agreed it could have passed as any flavor bisque. He ordered the Tips with bleu that were served with a very runny cheese sauce, almost watery. For my main course I ordered the filet with added lump crab meat and bleu cheese. I asked for the bleu to be served on the side because a prefer a lighter serving. Unfortunately, my crab meat was served IN the bleu cheese sauce so I couldn't taste the crab meat, just the bleu cheese. On a bright note, my filet was "cooked" perfectly. It just had a little less seasoning than I like. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I will return to Aquarium, however I think I'll pass on the "fine dining" items and stick with wine and appetizers. read more

There are two entrances, one to a casual bar space and one to a fine dining restaurant. I believe the menu is same in both spaces, but we tend to visit the bar for appetizers and the restaurant for steaks and seafood. I've eaten here dozens of times and never had a bad meal or experience. read more

And, salad dressing(s) that are not already on the menu, the kitchen is happy to attempt to create upon request. Cheerful, friendly staff is eager to assist with menu choices and recommendations. The location is convenient for anyone traveling on I 79; the Aquarium Lounge is just a few minutes off the exit. This little gem of a restaurant has some of the Best food around! And, ordering "to go" is promptly and happily accommodated. Meals are prepared to order with fresh ingredients. Prices are surprisingly lower than fine dining chains. Amazing prices! Parking can be a bit challenging, however, the "neighborhood" setting does have plenty of parking. Great food. Amazing price point. Welcoming atmosphere. Aquarium Lounge is highly recommend. Interesting. They took us in on a busy night, very small venue. Extremely well staffed , our server was very attentive. Maybe a bit too attentive. Several in our party felt a bit rushed. Atmosphere somewhat old school working class private club. The bread IS quite good. The appetizer of escargot was drowning in cheese, not something I generally feel is a a complement. Most of our rather large party got steak on the server's recommendation. Generally good but a few were overdone as to temperature. Figure $30 per person without cocktails. Not sure that there are restaurants of a better caliber in this area. read more

A quaint, little "dive"-type restaurant tucked away off the main drag of Fairmont, WV. I am so glad I found this gem thanks to a recommendation of friends! Although they messed up our reservation and we had to wait a while for a table (the place is VERY small!), the food did not disappoint. The menu has a nice selection of comfort foods, steaks, salads, pasta, and chicken dishes. I started with the Spinach salad, prepared in the classic way with bacon, hard-boiled egg, and a tangy sweet and sour dressing. I could have eaten 10 of these! For my entree, I got the Chicken Cordon Bleu with garlic smashed potatoes. Talk about a comfort classic! It was covered is a creamy sauce and I enjoyed every bite, even cold when I ate my leftovers later that night! Definitely stop in if you are looking for some homemade, tasty food in Fairmont! Aquarium Lounge is one of those places in your hometown that when you find it you're not only surprised you never had, you're overjoyed you did. They have a great menu that will make you forget that you're dining in Fairmont, West Virginia. The interior is relatively small and oddly decorated, the parking is a bit scarce, but these are things that are pretty consistent with any nonchain, "dive" type restaurant you would find. This is easily one of the best, if not the best, place to eat without driving 20 minutes to Clarksburg or Morgantown. The steaks are all worth trying, but my favorite has always been the pasta. I find myself ordering that almost every time I come. The roasted red pepper chicken soup is a must try if you've never had it. Also, grab some bruschetta and you'll thank me later. I really cannot comprehend the 1 star review of aquarium lounge. I have been coming here for years when I am in town and the food is excellent. For starters, I recommend the stuffed banana peppers. These are awesome but, beware, they can be super spicy! For a dinner entree the filet mignon (or pretty much any of their steaks) is amazing and the garlic smashed potatoes are the perfect side to go with. The entrees also come with a salad - House, caesar, or spinach all of which are freshly prepared and tasty! For dessert the blackberry cobbler is a nice end to a meal. Don't get me wrong I have tried many things on the menu and they are all delicious...the steaks are just out of this world melt in your mouth good! For lunch, I recommend trying the potato soup or the steak hoagie with mixed peppers! The ambiance is another plus. You get the best of both worlds : Upstairs is more formal with dim lighting and a more intimate setting whereas downstairs there are a few large booths and stools at the bar for a more laid back setting! read more

The first time I tried this place I LOVED it. Their bread and the two different types of butter is amazing. I could eat just that. I got the salmon as an entree and is was delicious as well. The next two visits were not so great. One of those times I got the salmon again and it was not quite as good as the first visit. The second time I got a tuna steak and it was bland and flavorless. Everyone in my party also had issues with their bill, one person being shorted $50. It's a nice, small place for a romantic dinner date. A bit pricey, and the food quality seems to vary. read more

I ordered a ribeye dinner with asparagus, garden salad, and French onion soup to go. As I unpacked it at my home, I noticed that they included a mini-loaf of bread as well as butter. The soup was packed separately from the toasted slices of bread and a slice of gruyere. I dropped the bread into the soup and topped it with the cheese and heated it. The soup was really flavorful. The steak melted in my mouth. The asparagus was flavorful as well and perfectly cooked. And even the mini loaf of bread was delicious. I will definitely order this as take-out again. read more

Aquarium Lounge Located on Gaston Avenue in Fairmont, WV, Aquarium Lounge is a "hometown favorite" that is showing its age. Last dined: Spring 2007. 1) Food - 1 star. The Aquarium Lounge earned their star for at least serving something that resembled food at the time. We started with the bruschetta appetizer which consisted of several, soggy, stacked pieces of Italian bread wading in a pool of Italian dressing with a mountain of cubed tomato and cucumber on top. Sadly the mozzarella cheese did not make an appearance with this dish. Next was the spinach salad with bacon dressing. It was obvious the dressing had just been whipped up because the oil/ grease separated from the sand like granulated sugar and unidentifiable pink stuff that was responsible for its distinct flavor and gelatinous texture. After washing the taste of the spinach salad down with anything available and wet, dinner arrived; the crab stuffed flounder with garlic mashed potatoes. The crab, or crab tasting paste in its place, was cold. The flounder was dry and burnt on the bottom. Continuing the dry paste theme, the garlic potatoes were a mound of desperation. 2) Service - 1 stars. Someone took our order and occasionally found the time to drop off food. Apparently the staff took "lounge" quite literally, like this job was simply a way to pass time. 3) Atmosphere - 2 stars. This place is charming and cozy...if you're a pirate. 'Charming and cozy' is code for eccentric and cramped. The Aquarium Lounge is a tiny old building in an eerie forgotten neighborhood with nonexistent parking. 4) Price - 1 stars. Overpriced, especially considering the diarrhea you're likely to experience later that night. 5) Additional Comments - Other reviews of the Aquarium Lounge will suggest this restaurant is a hometown favorite with the best steak in town. This may be the case. But the night we visited, the restaurant was staffed by college kids that had no business preparing or serving food. Fairmont should expect a better dining experience considering the price and stop relying on the Aquarium Lounge's old reputation. Everyone should have a consistently good experience every night. The Aquarium Lounge should get serious about the restaurant business, or get out. read more

I dined at the Aquarium Lounge last night while in the area for business. The location is a little off the beaten path, and has very little parking. For me, this added to the ambiance of the neighborhood joint that AL already has going for it. Despite an almost full house, I was seated immediately at the bar (by myself on business) and the bartenders were friendly but also weren't overbearing. Service was excellent, I think my bartender/waitress's name was Misty? She did a nice job. My only complaint was that I was not told what the specials were when I was given my menu. After I got my food, I heard another bar patron being informed of the specials and thought "that sounds good." The restaurant and bar are very clean (if a little dark) and have a pretty unique atmosphere. Think Cheers without all the weird characters and with a lot better food. Looking at the place from the outside I wondered what I had gotten myself into but once inside it is a very inviting independently owned restaurant. You can tell they've been doing it a long time. Typical of an independent bar/restaurant, they had no beer on draft, but their bottle selection was good and they also had a full bar. I had trouble even finding a restaurant with a full bar in Fairmont so although I wanted a draft beer I understand this isn't a drinker's town. I saw others drinking wine, and some people were ordering mixed drinks. I stuck with beer so cannot comment on the quality of the drinks. The food came out quickly and was well prepared. The spinach salad had good lean bacon on it, and the house "sweet and sour" dressing was an excellent match for the salty smoky bacon, savory cheese, and the dark greens of the spinach. The bread was fresh, though I suspect it came from an outside bakery. It was served with a garlic parsley butter, which was excellent. This part of West Virginia is known for its italian restaurants and although AL is not very italian, the garlic butter reminded me of trips to this area in the past. The Delmonico steak I ordered for my main course was good but not incredible like some of the reviews on yelp claim. For the price it was excellent, but there are better steaks to be had in North Central WV. The cut of meat was high quality and they did cook it to my specifications, but the sear on the outside of the steak was not perfect. A very good steak though, and better than anything you would get at any chain restaurant (I tend to compare steaks to the finest I've ever had). I have no doubt this is the best steak in Fairmont. For a side dish, I ordered the roasted vegetables, having no idea what that really was. It was a collection of roasted peppers, onions, zucchini, and squash, which was delicious! This was one of the highlights of my meal. These vegetables had the crunch and flavor of true freshness, like from the garden freshness. They were either roasted or sauteed in some butter and were an excellent complement to the steak I ordered. Later during my meal I overheard another patron ask the older lady who seated me (I assume the owner) where they got the peppers, and she said a local farmer's market. My tongue had not deceived me. I should also mention the food was very reasonable priced; even with three newcastle bottles (which I think were around $3.50 but I wasn't really paying attention) my whole meal with tip was around $35. I think my entree was $20 or less including a large salad and an entire loaf of bread. Overall, I would recommend the Aquarium Lounge and would return there myself in the future. Do not be put off by the old school exterior of the building, the odd neighborhood, or the darkness of the interior. This place is a gem, and the food is very good, particularly considering the price and location. Finally, I want to comment on the one star reviews of this place. Such a review does not reflect what I saw when I visited the AL. I travel for work and pleasure frequently and always eat well. This restaurant is a winner (frankly a pleasant surprise for such a small town) and certainly not deserving of some of the negative comments in the one star review. read more

This place is small, dark and very intimate. Great for couples...but also great for small groups or friends. Steaks are done right and the sea food is very good also. What a great local find!
