This is a very chic , edgy and lovely salon. I had my haircut and colored by Susie.The color was gorgeous and she created a hairstyle for me that had movement , volume and is easy / fun to style! If you need a fresh new look Susie is your stylist! She listens well ,is very attentive and will help you achieve your hair goals! After recommendations from some friends who grew up in Western Springs, I decided to make an appointment at Dye Hard Salon with Susie. Since living in the Chicago area, I have had my hair done at a few different places, but have never been impressed enough to make any of these salons my "go to" spot. That is until today! I will definitely be returning to Dye Hard, as I am extremely happy with the services I received. First and foremost, making an appointment was effortless. I called on Tuesday and easily secured an appointment for Thursday. I even had an opportunity to speak with Susie, the stylist who was going to be taking care of me. That was cool as I had a chance to introduce myself, tell her how I heard about her, and share with her what I was looking to do at my appointment. So, I had my hair highlighted and trimmed. The color turned out gorgeous. I look sun-kissed and summer ready, without looking over processed. I explained to Susie that I wanted very thin, natural looking highlights. She gave me exactly what I wanted! I have had stylists do what THEY want with my hair, but Susie definitely delivered what I asked for. I also had my hair trimmed. Now, when I say trim, I mean trim! That's what I want, that's why I ask for it. I want the least amount of hair taken off. I can't tell you how many stylists I have had that have taken off inches of my hair, but not Susie! She cut a very small amount off the ends of my hair and kept my length! In my book, one of the greatest qualities a stylist can possess is the ability to listen. Susie listened to what I wanted and delivered with both the color and the cut. Cheers to that! Aside from Susie's skills as a hair stylist, she is also a very sweet person. I enjoyed myself from the time I sat in her chair to the time I exited the salon. She was personable and bubbly and we had a lot to talk about. Excellent hair styling skills paired with a great personality are the perfect ingredients for an amazing experience at a salon. Finally, I was impressed with the owner. He was working alongside Susie, coloring a client's hair. Too cool! An owner that knows his stuff. He also checked on me while I was waiting for my color to process and offered me a refreshment in addition to checking on my color. I like the whole "all hands on deck" vibe I got from Dye Hard, it made me feel like I was in good hands. So, to sum it all up. If you are looking for a salon that offers great service and knows their stuff, I would certainly give Dye Hard a try. If you are a city dweller, Western Springs is only a 30 minute drive and it is worth it! Did I mention that for a full head of highlights and a cut, my bill only came out to $120! I still can't believe that! What a steal for a job well done. If you want to pay out the BoOty for the ambience of a city salon with mediocre services, stick to where you are going. I went here as almost a last resort. I was supposed to meet friends downtown and desperately need my hair cut. Being a guy its hard to sometimes find a decent haircut that wont make you feel like your going to need to take out a small loan to pay for it. I usually go to a barber shop near by but they happened to be closed. I have heard my sister talk about how amazing this place was and thought I would stop in to see if they could take a fast walk-in. Luckily not only were they able to take a walk-in (mind you it was almost 5 on a Saturday) but they did a fantastic job. I was escorted over to Jamie, who will probably cut my hair for the rest of my life! Jamie was amazing! He ended up missing his ride home to take on a new client and I couldn't be happier he did. I have kind of complicated hair and I have gotten too many bad hair cuts to think about. I can sometimes feel the cutters eyes go crossed when I explain what I'm looking for. Jamie not only listened to what I wanted, but mad a point to explain he would take the time to cut a little longer to make sure that I was happy with the length and if I wanted more off he could do that. Some people might think that's a waste of time but for a hair cut; I think it's an ideal situation. "You can always cut more off" said Jamie. I ended up telling him I trusted him, which I'm not going to lie....I lied, I never trust anyone cutting my hair for the first time. Anyway not only was he quick, professional, and a hell of a guy to talk to about anything, he did an outstanding job! I even like that he made a card that he will file with my name that says exactly what he did so he always knows what to do. Needless to say, I have been going there now ever since and NEVER have received a less then perfect cut. I've been going to Dye Hard Salon and Susie for over 10 years. Never disappointed! Not only do I consistently get great cuts, but when I get home and do my hair myself--it always turns out exactly the way Susie did it in the salon. I get a lot of compliments on the color (she foils and streaks my hair) and it looks great growing out--very natural. I've always had short hair, but the few times Ive wanted to grow it out--Susie keeps it trimmed and styled so that its much easier to grow out. First visit and definitely my last! I came with the expectation to basically refresh my current highlights ( I asked to match what the outgrowth was) and explained how my part was centered....even brought a picture of the style I was trying to achieve. Hair was side parted?.partially highlighted and more on the right then the left...lastly, I asked about the toner...to which the reply was no toner....why? So, after all the hype to try this salon after reading previous reviews...it didn't live up to ANY review I read. read more

I have been going to Dye Hard for 15 years. I lived in Western Springs and another local proprietor recommended him. I then moved downtown a short time later, but have been driving out to the burbs ever since (the Chicago/Aurora line Metra from Union Station stops across the street from the shop too). Jim, the owner, is an artist...He does a great job on short hair...taking into account all those little quirks I have, and that keep changing....once I had curly hair, then it was straight, and now it's curling again, but it always looks great. I also love that it still looks great weeks after I get it cut. I never understand it, but I can go 6 weeks + and still feel that it looks good and I can style it. Before, I always hated the "growing out" period. Jim has so many longstanding clients that alone is the only testament needed for the work he does. Every time I visit, he asks what I want, and he has always done what I ask, but now I trust him to "do his thing". I also get my hair highlighted. I like it too look "natural" and he adjusts for the "season" and always gets it right. It's also fun to sit in his chair...the atmosphere is very collegial. I can always rely on hearing some funny stories and probably retelling them later.... read more
