She did a great job, and suggested a different type of bustle for my dress that I ended up really loving how the bustled look came out. She fit the dress exactly to my body as it needed and I felt like I could trust her with my dress, as opposed to some of the other dress alteration companies in NYC that I've read some questionable reviews for. The price was reasonable, the experience was very easy and her and her mother working in the shop were very friendly. They're an affordable option for basic alterations, but out of their depth for more complex needs. I took a wedding dress to get altered and they did a good job cutting off the hem but when the bust was too large they just stuck cups in, making the whole dress look really strange. I had to go to a second tailor specializing in weddings, and they commented on how shoddy the tailoring was and had to undo a lot of the work. I think I'd go to E&L if I needed my pants hemmed or if the sleeves on a shirt were too long, but would probably look elsewhere for something more complex. read more

I went to E&L to have two different special occasion dresses hemmed, and I would definitely recommend them. They are very friendly and do high-quality work. The best part for me was that they didn't overcharge. Another tailor quoted $180 to have a bridesmaid's dress hemmed (more than twice the price of the dress itself!), while E&L did it for $65. I wanted this place to work; the people are nice and it's a small business close by. They were able to do simple hem jobs fine but they completely butchered a slip dress that I wanted to make a little closer fitting. The dress now zips up crookedly, it's super tight and so a hole is forming on the lace detail, it bunches up on the left side, etc. when I brought it back, they tried to pull it on my body to straighten it out and then admitted it needed to be fixed. When I picked it up, nothing looked like it was fixed. Now looking for a place that can help fix my dress if anybody has any recommendations. read more

I brought my wedding suit here after reading the five star reviews on their ability to tailor a suit. Unfortunately, they ruined my suit jacket. It fit pretty well right off the shelf and wanted it fitted a little nicer. It was better off before I gave it to them. The first time they gave it back to me, I noticed the sleeves were not even. Everything was rumpled. They took it back and tried to fix it, but everything came back again looking like an unmade bed. I had to take it to another tailor who pointed out all the other errors (cut off too much fabric, back/shoulders fitted improperly), and I had to pay a premium to get it fixed a week before my wedding. I brought a dress here to be altered after my local "dry cleaner" returned it to me, claiming the alterations were too difficult. The dress was maxi in length, pleated skirt with kimono sleeves and a plunging open neckline - and I wanted a knee length, cap sleeved dress which required a transformation. I had been pinned and quoted $150 before having the garment returned to me, untouched with a sigh.... Feeling defeated, I yelped and found Ella at E&L and she was able to transform my garment, fit my kimono sleeves down to cap sleeves, hem a full skirt with pleats and masterfully close the front of a plunging neckline for $70 with a 1 week turnaround. I dropped off two dresses to be taken in. Simple seams and pockets. When I picked them up they were both VERY poorly altered. The woman promptly went to work re-pinning them to rectify the many problems and told me I could get them up the next day. I just went to pick them up. The pockets on the dresses did not lay flat. One dress' pocket was gaping open. The younger woman insisted that this was how the pockets were when I brought it in. It was not. She promptly refunded my money for the one dress that will need to be altered again. The older woman seemed more competent and friendlier. These were very simple shift dresses, nothing complicated. The initial workmanship was awefull and the corrections were only marginally better. I'll be using the alteration services at the dry cleaner one ock over on PPW to correct the mistakes AGAIN. I have been here a few times now, and they've done great work, including a re-work on a bridesmaid dress that had some particular requirements. This is a no frills shop with one dressing room, but it's never been too packed. The two bridesmaid dresses I have had taken in ($35) and hemmed ($25) were $60 each. Hemmed jeans were ~$8, and a hemmed skirt was $10. All had around a one week turnaround, but I haven't needed any rush alterations. read more

4.5 stars for wedding dress alterations. E&L Fashion is the place to go if you have a wedding dress that requires extensive alterations and want them done at a reasonable price. I purchased the last available size of my dress (3 sizes too big!) in Manhattan, as the style was no longer carried by the store. Since in-house alterations would likely have been more, I decided to do some research. After being quoted exorbitant fees by alterations specialists in Manhattan, I found E&L Fashion -- what a Godsend! The small nondescript store is a professional, family-run business. In fact, the two owners are seasoned seamstresses who design custom wedding gowns and dresses. I was so nervous about the amount of work that would be required for my dress -- taking in the bust/sides all the way down to the hip, and individually removing intricate layers of tulle to shorten the dress -- but was very pleased with the outcome and service. Even though I had to make an extra trip the week of my wedding (E&L forgot to place the simple bustle at the end, which they later fixed expertly and quickly -- this was also my fault since I should have checked!), the dress turned out great and I was overall thrilled. I made five long trips to Brooklyn (1+ hour commute each way), but would gladly do it again for the quality work. Thank you for helping me look and feel beautiful on my big day! read more

I thought it was no brainer to bring my wedding dress here, given all the 5 star reviews. Short story is that I was very disappointed, they made my wedding dress into something I don't like as much, and I ended up at another tailor, paying twice to get this dress tailored. My wedding dress was a very simply crepe, and I needed a few things done: opening up the neckline, shortening the dress, taking it in, and reenforcing a button that I had read was a weak point in the dress. I returned the following week to discover they had cut and sewn the neckline differently than what I had asked and how the dress had been designed. The tailor was very pushy and insisted it was the best way to do it. OK. Then the button was not reenforced. She instead just added a second button and said I would just need to be sewn into the dress the day of my wedding. (So why did she add a button I would essentially not use?) Finally some of the seams from taking in the dress were not flat - they told me it would be solved with pressing. Can they press it? No. So I had to just trust that what they were saying was right. I paid the full $190, which I now regret doing, and returned home with the dress disappointed. After a few weeks, I decided to take it to another tailor to fix these mistakes. It made me realize what a real tailor is like! This new tailor took the time to understand what I wanted, made measurements and pointed out other issues with how the dress had been taken in. He made all the changes without cutting anything (so it could be undone) and then made sure I was happy with everything before finalizing the dress. It's better now and this tailor also presses the dress--which is more convenient and you can actually see the full effect before paying for the tailoring. I know others had wonderful experiences here, and I truly wish I could have said the same. read more

The dress had an illusion tulle back that was too light to keep the zipper in place, and the original tailor could not get it to lay flat. It was bulging out and giving me a hunchback! I had my wedding dress altered at E&L Fashion. I sincerely appreciate how my wedding dress fitting was treated like any other kind of dress alteration. There was no fanfare or extra costs related to the fact that it was for a wedding (which is difficult to find, especially in NYC). The straps were shortened, the bust was taken in, and the bottom of the dress was hemmed. I loved the train but didn't love the look of a traditional bustle. With some ingenuity and talent, she recreated the vision in my head of securing the train underneath to create the look of a ballgown. The finest tailor I've ever used, bar none. Removing shoulder pads. Replacing zippers. Adding darts. Patching jeans. Recrafting antique tablecloths. These gals can do it all -- expertly, caringly, thoughtfully, and with an eye on my wallet. There is nothing I won't ask them to do, and it's almost fun to buy a garment that's two sizes too large now (if I can't get it in my size) because I KNOW this place will be able to fix it to fit like a glove (or whatever is needed). They are equally at home with men and women, small and large, and they throw in the extra touch of phoning to remind me to stop by if my garments hang just a few days too long.
