The location opens at 7:00 a.m., and I arrived at approximately 7:05 a.m. I pulled my car up to the sliding door, walked inside, and asked for assistance. The employee pictured immediately yelled, "Hey, What are you doing here?" I replied that I was there for a state inspection. He responded very rudely, saying, "We don't do inspections until 8:00 a.m." I calmly and politely explained that I was unaware because there was no signage indicating that inspections began at 8:00 a.m. He replied, "That's not my problem. I've been working here for 10 years, and this shop, like every other shop, doesn't do inspections until 8:00 a.m." His entire demeanor was confrontational, and he treated me as though I was trespassing simply for asking about an inspection. I explained that I had been coming to this location for the past two years and had never been treated this way before. At that point, another male customer walked over, and the pictured employee's attitude immediately changed. He then turned back to me and said, "Move your car outta here," while shooing me away as if I were a dog. As I was getting back into my car, he continued talking about me to the other customer, making comments that caused the customer to look at me as though I had created a disturbance. The entire interaction was humiliating, unprofessional, and completely unnecessary. . The entire interaction was demeaning, disrespectful, and completely unprofessional. My vehicle's camera captured the encounter, although unfortunately it did not record the audio. Every paying customer deserves to be treated with courtesy and respect. I left feeling singled out because of the way I was treated. While I can't know the employee's motivation, the interaction left me with the impression that I was treated differently as an African American woman. read more

They are friendly and always available to do inspections. They absolutely do fail you for brakes when new brakes are not needed. Then they offer to do them in a very non pushy way. I've seen this complaint a few times stretched out over many years but that doesn't make it right. I'm sure many new people to the area, especially women fall for this way more than it's reported. read more

They loan uninsured cars to customers without checking to ensure the customer has insurance. Tried calling them multiple times along with Police & no response to date. Now I have to go to small claims court for damage that someone did to my home using their vehicle to deliver packages. read more

I've been going here for years and I've always found Joe and his crew to be honest and reliable.

I have a 1998 Volvo S70 that needed replacement of leaking radiator lines, a job that required both a thorough examination of the radiator, water pump and all the lines connecting the entirety of the radiator loop. The leak points were not obvious, except for the fluid dripping from beneath the engine block pointing to their points of origin. Joe agreed that because the leaks were far from the radiator, I wasn't looking at a full-on replacement of that unit. After his inspection, he located not one but two sources of line leaks (not surprising for a car of its age) and provided an estimate that was reasonable and exactly what the job ended up costing. In addition, and on late notice, I asked Joe to handle my 2024 inspection. While doing a thorough exam, he pulled my wheels off and discovered that my back brakes were just about shot. Once again, he provided a reasonable estimate and took care of that issue, saving me a possible extreme expense via breakdown because of the aging brakes. So, two issues resolved, all leading to the car passing its 2024 inspection. All that done within three days!!! Having grown up with a father who was a mechanic and with long years of experience with repair shops: I give 10 out of 10 STARS to E & S Automotive. When faced with unexpected, and sometimes not easily diagnosed, car issues, a customer hopes for honesty, an estimate that matches or is close to final repair cost, and timely repairs (with daily updates!). I just have to write this review because it infuriates me every time I change my wife's oil. A few years ago before I lived in Boston my wife got her oil changed here. She drives a VW Jetta. VW jettas have an interesting nut that serves as an engine oil plug, these guys absolutely DESTROYED this nut putting it back on to the point where I could not remove it. I brought the vehicle here and they told me they didn't do it, even though the oil change sticker was still on her car that this was the last place she came. Alright, whatever, they told me if I went and got a new nut they would help me out. I left and got one at autozone, when I went back they told me since it wasn't a VW part they wouldn't do it. Alright, whatever, this time I drove to the VW dealership in Watertown and got the part and came back. AGAIN, they said they wouldn't do it and that I can't prove they are the ones who fucked her car up. I took the car to a place in the hood and they got it right off, allowed me to install the nut that is more of a standard fitting and allows me to change the oil myself. If you didn't want to read all that, these guys are CLASSIC MECHANIC SCUMBAGS. They screwed me over time and time again and didn't even blink an eye. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this mechanic that's how bad they are. read more

I would never bring my car here again. They replaced the rotors and the brake pads. The brakes were squeaking for a week so I brought the car back to get them fixed. Then they kept squeaking. The owner gave me some dumb reason why. I googled and asked other shops and the consensus was that the brakes shouldn't squeak. He wouldn't make it right nor offer any money back. I don't know if they intentionally did this or simply forgot, but I went there 2-3 weeks ago to get my oil changed and to get my state inspection done. The serviceman was pretty friendly and finished it within 30 minutes. They said they only took cash and charged me about $120 or so. I realized later that they didn't give a receipt for my oil change, and now checking on carfax, I see the oil change was never done. Now I don't have any way of getting my money back. read more

If I could leave zero stars, I would. I brought my vehicle in for a quick estimate/tune up appraisal. Guy was nice. Shook hands. Said he'd check it out. I know quite a bit about cars, so as a woman, I am ready to not be screwed over. Unfortunately, he tried anyways. Not only did he charge $45 to read the meter on my car (takes less than 30 sec), but then he said I needed another $145 diagnostic test done. So ~$200 worth of "work" wo any repairs made?! When I calmly asked him to explain on phone and mentioned that I had been to auto zone and had already read meter, he became incredibly upset by my use of the word "auto zone" and started yelling at me. I then calmly asked him to lower his voice and that I would be in shortly to grab my keys. When I then went in 30 min later to retrieve my vehicle, I plainly told him that this is not the way to conduct business, let alone speak to a woman. He then raised his voice at me again, even w another gentleman in his office. I will not tolerate this type of behavior and will never be back here, recommend here, nor believe that they have any sort of ethics backing their business. I couldn't recommend E&S automotive more! I'm telling you I've NEVER experienced this type of friendly demeanor or wonderful customer service at an auto shop in my life. I called very last minute for an oil change a few weeks ago after another place in town told me to come by, and then when I arrived basically said they couldn't do it anymore. So I googled, called E&S and they were SO friendly, told me to come right down. They did the oil change in 15 minutes tops! Then today I realized I needed an inspection sticker, again I called last minute and they fit me right in, did the inspection SO quickly. I was in and out in 10 minutes. The waiting area was clean, they had hand sanitizer out, and again I was blown away by how friendly and kind they were. I will be a customer for a long time! read more

I brought it back a few months later for a mechanical issue (the window switch was not working)...he wanted $500 for it! I paid it, as I needed my window to roll down and I have ZERO knowledge about cars, not even what prices are SUPPOSED to be, but anyway I paid it, but decided I'd be more cautious next time. This last time drew the line. I brought my car in for an exhaust problem, and an inspection sticker, the "check engine" light was on. Out the gate, he told me he could fix the repairs, but would have to fail me (and charge me $30) for the computer to "reset" and then drive around, and come back, and pay an additional $30 for a new sticker...again, fishy. He calls me back to tell me that I need *2* catalytic converters, to the tune of $1,600! I said no way, did some more research, and found out that this guy is a crook, and that he's done this before to other people... I took my car into another a mechanic in Southie... and was told that both my car converters are just fine, and that i needed a flex pipe, an oil change, and a new battery... $300. I came in Saturday morning to get my oil changed and after not seeing any prices I asked how much it would cost. The price started out somewhere above $100 for full synthetic. Then it became $99. I asked about the review Tony wrote and the price quoted for him being 89.95. After asking if the prices had changed and being told no it was always 99 I was told to call in Monday and talk to the boss, which I plan to do. read more

I had two VERY bad experiences with these folks. I needed a basic inspection and oil change and needed a place close to my apartment. First: They did not change the sticker in my window for the oil mileage so I called a few days later when I noticed. They said it was a simple mistake and to add 3,000 miles to it and I would be fine. Just before my next oil change I started experiencing problems with my car and brought it in. IT WAS COMPLETELY OUT OF OIL. They forgot to change my oil. I could care less about the $30 they charged me for but am even more upset that my car may have long term issues due to this! Second: for my annual inspection they passed me and have me a sticker. Two weeks later my front tires began to wobble aggressively. I brought my car to GMC and they said the ball joints were so bad the tires could have fallen off at any moment. They said during an inspection this would have been impossible to miss. Thus, E&S must have just passed my inspection without actually doing a full inspection - very unsafe! The state of MA has been contacted and is looking into this. I let me experience sit for a month before going to Yelp as I have done with all of the few one star reviews I have written. After waiting I still think this is the right review. I took my car here to get an inspection since it was the only place within a mile of my apartment open early. They were prompt and polite but then said my car had failed inspection since the emission testing systems could not connect with the onboard computer. After getting this news, i went to the internet and quickly found that it was unlikely that a Civic with 100% stock parts should have this issue. I then called my Honda dealer who also said it was unlikely a car without any aftermarket parts or serious accident history would have this condition. I then set up an appointment with my families longtime mechanic in the suburbs to have him fix the problem. He was equally uncertain about how the stated problems could occur and recommended I pay another garage to do an inspection since he was going to charge $$129 bucks for a diagnostic and he thought it likely I would pass an inspection elsewhere for 35 bucks. So on the weekend I went out to the place my parents have gotten inspections for years (this guy got a five star review from me) and paid to have the car inspected again. It passed with no problems. I dont think this garage is unethical since they didnt push me to do the repairs there and if i had gone back to them for a new inspection it would have been free as the State rules require. That said, they screwed up the inspection and either have faulty equipment or do not know how to use it. It should have been clear to them that the error message they were getting was because of their mistake/equipment and not due to my car. read more

E&S is a stand out Auto Shop. First went here for state inspection and easy in and out 25-30 minutes total. My girlfriend took my car here for me as scraping noise from bottom of car. I could see loose piece, but wanted to make sure nothing more serious. Mechanic reattached the loose piece of metal without trying to up sell something else was wrong. The craziest part is he CHARGED 0 DOLLARS. Never been to a place that charges nothing at all if actually nothing wrong and he even did some work. Highly recommend! I had my wife bring her mom's car here for a sticker as she's been bringing it there for a while. The car is 6 years old with only 34,000 miles as it is driven minimally. They said it needed a 4 wheel brake job and quoted $750.00. So, they put a rejection sticker on it, a "30 day" red one, and told my wife it was good for 60 days. Being a former auto mechanic, that sounded high, so got another estimate at a local shop for $550. That mechanic also told me that the "R" sticker he put on was the 30 day one and not the black 60 day one. So, be sure to shop around for the best price. I can't say either way if their work is reputable because we didn't get it fixed there. read more

Quick oil change but the oil drain plug wasn't tightened all the way resulting in a totaled engine and thousands in repairs. Called to ask if they can do anything for me if a mechanic confirms that was the cause and got yelled at by the owner saying they wouldn't be taking responsibility for anything. I would recommend this place for sure. I cannot speak to major car work but they did an oil change and inspection sticker within a half hour tops. Best yet, I had forgotten my card to pay with at home. No problem, they let me grab my card at home and return to pay for the services. Friendly, efficient, and fast.
