I went in because my driver side window wasn't working. It turned out the window regulator and motor need to be replaced. They quoted me $800 for this. Where did they pull this number out of?! They also said it would take a week for them to get the parts. Anyway, I took my car to a different mechanic instead and they diagnosed and fixed this same issue for $400 within 24 hours. This shop stinks. I had them install a front end suspension and then do an alignment to my car. When I drove it for a few days the car was making a clunking sound again. I took it back and they said it was the inner and outer tie rods. I said that's odd as you guys installed that on the car. Then the guy said it was the both inner tie rods. So I got a replacement set and they installed them and when I take the car home it's still makes a clunking sound. I CALLED THEM AND COMPLAINED the guy said it must be something else. Like really? Do your self a favor and avoid this place when ever you need auto repair. I would not recommend this place to anyone they are just there to rip you off. A good mechanic should be able to diagnose a probably and tell you exactly what it is not guess and then say it might be something else after charging a customer 2X. I have a Toyota all wheel drive vehicle. I had to replace two of my tires. They replace them without notifying me that and I will drive vehicle needs to have all four tires replaced at the same time in order for I will drive to work appropriately. When I took my car back for Toyota licensed servicing within the next year, they told me that my all wheel drive was not functioning because of Ell-Bern's error. I ended up needing to replace all the tires, including the new ones from Ell-Bern, again. This doubled my costs at least from what it should've been, and my car safety was compromised in the meantime. It doesn't seem like these people have any idea what they are doing. I spent a week dodging the meter maids - hiding my car in the depths of the South End/Roxbury and covering my windshield with old flyers...A bit of advice - if you use Dominos coupon flyers, people will steal them. I recommend political and gym advertisements - nobody will touch those! Ell-Bern is conveniently located and doesn't require an appointment to get your car inspected. The staff here is kind of cold/unfriendly but they get the job done quickly. I don't think I've ever been in and out of a service station so fast - which was awesome since it was Columbus Day and I had to get back to my drinkin' on the couch. Based on this we scheduled the service and I provided a clear list of work I wanted attended to. I arrived on the scheduled day and time and no record of the scheduled service or the work list was found. When I called back later to understand what went wrong I mentioned that since I was a new customer with no other frame of reference that I was concerned about the organization at their shop and was told "they do not need customers like me"! I downloaded the Yelp app just so I could give this company a poor rating- my experience was that bad and they were that mean. I don't think I've ever been treated with such disrespect from a company. They had a terrible system for their inspection in which multiple people who were in line for more than an hour were cut by a newcomer and as a result, we were unable to get our car inspected before day's end, despite the fact that we were reassured multiple times that we would be serviced. The very least I hoped for was an apology after their employee repeatedly blamed the whole process on those in line for "not paying attention" when it was our turn. It was appalling, not sure I've ever been treated this badly as a customer. I hope for their sake they figure this out. The whole thing is a shame given that they're in a convenient location, but I would save yourself the frustration and time and go somewhere else for an inspection unless you're absolutely desperate, as you may not even have a chance of being serviced even if you're promised to be. read more

I saw a sign for air conditioning repair $100. I went in and was charged $105 to be told my compressor was broken and it would be a total of $800 to repair. Went to my regular mechanic found out nothing's wrong with my compressor and he fixed everything for $120. These people are overpriced, they misdiagnosed and are essentially fraudulent! Haydar Ali (the owner of this place) bought this place several years back and is the most hard-working, genuine, and honest mechanic I have seen in my past nine years of living in Boston. I noticed that my car was shaking and made an awfully loud noise. Well, at 5:00 PM on a weekday I gave them a call desperate to find out that my exhaust was falling off and then I had a very important event weekend ahead of me. He took my concern very serious went above and be on it drove to get the parts after closing time returned back to his shop to fix my car in no time fast forwarding I had my car within three hours. It was very important to me that I wrote a review because it is very rare nowadays to find people that have a good heart and who's action speak for themselves. I was very surprised to read all of the positive reviews regarding this company. If you want a quick car inspection...this is a great spot. If you want good customer service...GO ELSEWHERE! I went there today to get an inspection, and the guy told me that my car would not pass inspection. He did, however, offer to do the inspection for $29 dollars, fail me, give me 60 days to fix the problem with my car, and then do the inspection again for another $29. How courteous of him! This place helps you with the bare minimum...but don't ask questions and expect to get any helpful answers. I would not recommend this location. read more

Let me save you some major time, money and inconvenience by asserting that you should NEVER consider coming here. I came here for a routine MA inspection. I was shocked when I had failed (I have a fairly new car that I get checked regularly). The repairs this shop was "suggesting" ranged anywhere from 200 to 500 dollars. Perturbed and suspicious, I proceeded to take my car to two different auto-dealerships (in South Boston). Needless to say, I passed both of their inspections and was on my way. I think the South Boston mechanic summed it up best when he said, "That guy, he was trying to f#ck you. There ain't nothin wrong with your caaah." Well Ell-bern did already royally screw me because the "failed" inspection sticker he placed on my car earned me three tickets by the boston parking police (over two days of being parked on street until I had time to take it to another mechanic). In summary, NEVER GO to to Ell-Bern. This place is the WORST. They will RIP YOU OFF. There are much more honest, capable, great auto-repair shops in South Boston. read more

Get it in writing. Sign the invoice authorizing the itemized cost of repairs they claim your auto/truck requires to pass ($35.00) inspection (for me it was my front-end suspension ($875.00). Make sure they print out a document stating the repairs needed and the itemized charges of repairs. THEN, take it to another inspection center ($35.00) to see if they say your auto/truck requires the same repairs to pass inspection. I chose El Bien because it was 4 blocks from where I live. I urge you to proceed with caution when dealing with them on costs. Do "not" allow yourself to be subjected to their estimate repair cost ($600.00). They present the cost for repairs as "final" costs of what you will pay. My costs/ their charges changed 4 times over a 3-week period. The length of time was due to failed delivery of twice unfulfilled online part request. I needed to take control of the situation. I ordered and paid for the part online and ONLY after live confirmation from the dealership they had the part in stock ($350.00). Their charges increased to include repairs not initially required ($571.00). As of today, my left, front end suspension needed repair. I think. I have not yet been able to pick up my auto. read more

Certainly a hit or miss type of place, I've had very good luck with tire replacement (purchased my own tires on line and brought them in to avoid massive up charge) and then fell flat with small requests. For example, I do a lot of my own part installations. When I needed a front end alignment, the crew told me they couldn't do it because I needed new tie-rod ends. I told them I'd replace my tie rod ends and bring it in for an alignment.. They told me not to bother bringing it back if they weren't going to do the tie-rod ends themselves. Why? They wanted twice the part cost for the tie-rods and then Maserati technician level labor costs on top, which is crap in my book. Steer clear.. Unfortunately they are one of the only shows in town being located on the outskirts of the South End/Roxbury. Evident as well by their "last stop before highway" gas prices. On the bright side.. They'll do state inspections on a moments notice. Make sure you know the cash cost of a state inspection before going, they'll BS you. read more

I stopped by without an appointment at 8am this morning b/c I got a flat two days ago and have been rocking the donut since. I requested 4 new tires and was given multiple options at different price points (love that) and told they would also give the car a once over since it was in there anyway. They called a couple hours later and informed that my rear brakes were shot (not shocking to me) and everything else could wait for 5-7k more miles, which is like a year's worth of driving for me, woohoo! I dealt with Gary in the morning, and then someone else on the phone, found them to be helpful and courteous. Car was done by 3pm. Like others, I am not going to proclaim this to be the cheapest place ever (because, you know, I am such a mechanical pricing expert), but to get in and out in one day without an appointment is pretty fabulous in my book, especially in the city. Question everything about the price they quote you! Had my tire patched here. Took me right away and did a good job. My problem was that they were not up front with the price. Called ahead to ask and was told $20. But in the end it was $30. Apparently they charge $10 to take off and put the tire back on, but didn't tell me this ahead of time or even ask me if I wanted them to do it, they just did. Also the tire was already off when I got there so all they had to do was put it back on. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I thoroughly believe they attempted to screw me over because I'm a blonde woman because they thought I knew nothing about my car. They severely overcharged me on labor. Over the phone I asked how much their per hour labor charge was and they quoted me a much higher number than is listed in their office (which I saw later). They also wanted to charge me $600 for something I though was going to be much less and when I slightly contested they said they had "done the math wrong" and it was only $400 (still high but I needed my car). The last straw was when I was picking up my car for this last repair and the guy said that I definitely needed all new tires, I asked really, all of them? And he reaffirmed his statement. I brought my car into Ell Bern to have the brakes looked at, and get some new tires mounted. Being the indecisive person that I am, I changed my mind on the tires I wanted after the order was already made. The owner of the shop allowed me to change my order and return the original tires at no cost. My brakes and rotors were changed out, and they felt better than they did the day I purchased my car 3 years ago. Everything was done in a timely manner, and everything is done with quality products (which is important to me). I do not recommend this mechanic. I used Gary to service my truck for years and although I was never happy with his service, he was conveniently located at the end of my block so I put up with shoddy work and exorbitant prices... yes, I'm that lazy. But my last visit was the straw that broke the camel's back. I took my truck in for an oil change and asked Gary to check everything out because I was going on a cross country trip. A few hours later, he informed me the front brakes needed to be redone (but the rear brakes were fine). As I didn't want any problems on the road, I had him do the work. The brakes didn't become an issue again until California, but the truck battery died in Pennsylvania, and the engine seized up in Kansas. I realize it's a ten year old truck and not all the problems can be blamed on a lazy mechanic who failed to be proactive. But on top of everything, the front brakes he charged me $900 to "fix" continued to be an issue until a competent mechanic informed me the rear brakes were the real problem. They were actually in SUCH bad shape he was dumbfounded when I explained another mechanic had looked at them and done nothing, though he guessed it was because it was such a difficult fix. They were completely rusted to the brake shoe and had been for some time. Gary is the kind of mechanic that gives other mechanics a bad name. He won't be seeing any more of my business, nor do I recommend him. read more
