Great steaks...like the old time Nation of Islam steak and takes that used to be all over Newark in the 70s and early 80s

The take n steak is pretty good. This is a food truck conveniently located by the train station in Newark. The only thing I've had here was the take n steak and it was good. I will say that the bread was a bit too soggy and there was no lettuce or tomato. I wish they could have toasted it for the amount of time I was waiting anyway... The food did take a weee bit too long to make but I guess I understand that. I maybe try some fish like fried shrimp or scallops next time. read more

Oh boy...I've been waiting for a week to do this review... So last week a co-worker of mine picked up lunch for us and he went to Steak and Take over on Mulberry here in Newark. Now I don't want to claim that I'm some kind of cheesteak connoisseur, but I've eaten a lot of cheesesteaks and I know a good one from a bad one. Folks, the one we opened up last week was the worst thing I've ever seen called a cheesesteak. I say we do this review from a sensory perspective because it was an offense to all five senses. Smell I wish we had smell-o-vision because that was the first thing that started me down this one star debacle. When I unwrapped this monstrosity the aroma (or odor, you pick the term) was not the delicious cooked steak and cheese aroma that you get from pretty much any other cheesesteak (even cooking steak-ums at home), but it was rather a sour mustardy odor that immediately made me turn up my nose at the thing. The 'aroma' made iit difficult to even get to the point where I wanted to taste this thing. Sight After getting past the smell, we went to the next sense-sight- and this thing didn't look good either. I mean it wasn't quite as bad as some of the diapers I pulled off my kids, but it looked awful. The meat was covered in this yellowish sauce that didn't help the presentation one bit. Taste Onto taste - here is where my taste buds rebelled and turned on me for the rest of the day (I tasted this thing the rest of the day). I took a bite of the cheesesteak, chewed it for about 5 seconds and my mouth and throat wouldn't allow me to continue and I had to spit it out-it was terrible. My co-worker, a veteran, put it simply "I've had a cheesesteak from an Army dining facility in Afghanistan that tasted better." I didn't want to review this based on five seconds of chewing so I pulled off some of the bread and tried it separately and it was actually decent, but when I did the same thing with the guts of the sandwich I came to the same conclusion-awful. There is some kind of sauce they put on this thing that tasted like a combination of curry and mustard and BBQ that just didn't work...AT ALL. Just writing this is making me not want to eat lunch today. Touch Touch?? How could a sandwich offend the sense of Touch? Here's how, the grizzle I was chewing as I was looking for something positive to say about this sandwich sent me over the edge-it wasn't bad enough that it smelled bad, tasted bad and looked bad, I also had to try to choke down some grizzly meat as well. Sorry, strike four. Hearing Finally, the sad sound of throwing 97% of a cheesesteak into the garbage was too much. Not only did I have to throw it out, I had to take the sandwich out into the hallway so I wouldn't smell it for the rest of the day. Then the sounds of my co-workers all discussing this sandwich made me want to hide my head in the sand... I can assure you that my SIXTH SENSE is telling me that there is no way, at any time in the future, that I will ever stop at Steak and Take for anything resembling food. Honestly, for those of you that eat here regularly, God Bless you and your iron stomach's...I don't care if we hit them on a bad day, I won't be back-not even if someone else was willing to pay for lunch...I'll go hungry. read more

Not a fan of the steak sub. The sandwich was too soggy, the bread became mushy and fell apart when I tried to eat it. The sauce is overly sweet and the meat had no beef flavor with no seasoning. Opted for the provolone for a dollar more which helped the sub a bit. The wait was horrendous, 15 minute wait for the sub and I'm the second person on he line. My coworkers and I order from here every week. Everyone that has had any of their food has been happy. My personal favorites are the fish and shrimp. The fish and shrimp are always fresh and flavorful but the tartar sauce is AMAZING!!! I can eat the tartar sauce like its a side. read more

Tried to order lunch, still waiting on food, he lied to us, never tried to make it up to us, food was ordered at 1130 a.m., delivery was to be no later than 1230, we called, his response that he had no delivery person, he would close down and make delivery himself, but at 130 no food, he alleges that delivery person now went to Raymond Blvd to mk delivery, , but what about our food, since 1130 a.m. He turns up at 1:45, LUNCH is over!!!, We have supported this truck for years, and this is how you treat customers???, Back to Bergen Street we go, terrible business ! read more

E&S Original Steak-N-Take been meaning to review for awhile, get steaks or fish but this visit I had chicken take Deeelicious, chock full of fresh grill chopped chicken (not shaved & formed) frozen slices peppers onion sauce & cheese  on wheat steak roll.  I've also tried the kale, bean and turkey sausage soup, loved it. A great food truck to grab a bite, when downtown Newark or @ outdoor events on food truck row NJPAC! My first chicken take will have me back for more. read more

They added a $4 tip charge to our bill without asking if I wanted to tip. I then had to wait over 30 minutes for the food. I can't believe they expected a tip if the service takes so long. No apology for the long wait but they did return the $4 tip. Go elsewhere unless you have all the time in the world. I usually get the 4 piece fish sandwich with hot sauce and homemade tartar sauce. It's amazing. It's served with two pieces of wheat bread and the sauces on the side. The fish is fried to perfection and the pieces are pretty big. It's good for before the games at Prudential Center or, like me, an after work dinner run. I live in the area so I come when I can. I've also ordered the shrimp chowder which is good as well. In an area where there isn't much to choose from, it's on my list of spots to hit if it's before 7pm. read more

Day One: I saw the truck and checked out the desserts. I got the carrot cake w/walnuts and raisins. It was delicious!! In every bite you taste walnuts and raisins! The cream cheese icing was also delicious! Day Two: I again get the carrot cake.. Day Three: I decide to get some lunch and honey child!!! I got the four piece fish sandwich with extra tartar sauce.. and potato salad. Now, let me say this. I LOVE fish, but I love my fish fried a certain way. I don't want it to smell fishy and I want it fried a little crispy and this fish here... hmmmpt! DELICIOUS!!! You get four nice sized piece of fish and they're fried perfectly!!! In all fairness, I"ve eaten here once and only had their cheesesteak. From what I hear their other items like fish are pretty good. But dear god this was the worst cheesesteak I've ever had. Like Steve S' picture the steak was soggy, in a non good greasy philly steak way. The steak itself was grissly and lacked any flavor at all, not even salt. Oh yeah there was a flavor, that brownish curryesque sauce they lopped on top of it. What the heck was that? I thoguht at first it was cheese, but nope it was this tasteless sauce. Who expects their to be some weird sauce on their cheesesteak? Is this not New Jersey, where we are geographically close enough to Philly to know how to make a proper steak? Come to think of it did the CHEESEsteak even have cheese on it? The bread tasted like nothing, perhaps eating paper is the best way to describe the taste. It was really just mushy tasting. Lastly, it took maybe ten minutes to make, without As you can tell this was just awful. However I'm not here to ruin someone's business. I've seen this truck around for years, so they must be doing something right. I urge others to add their reviews. I bring my lunch to work nearly every day, but today I got up late. I've walked past this truck on many occasions and in support of and for want of something different I stopped and ordered a 2 piece fried whiting sandwich. I got to my destination and opened the sandwich and was happy to see that between 2 slices of WHOLE WHEAT BREAD, there were THREE pieces of fish, lightly battered and seasoned to perfection! Although there was a line, they didn't take long, the guy was really cool and the price was right. They had deserts etc, but I wasn't in the mood so I can't say how they taste. Yes, I ate it all and it taste like more, but I was too lazy to go back. Besides, I'm a girl and even though girl's are greedy too, we can't appear that way in public. LOL! Don't have a clue what the steak sandwich tastes like, and can't understand why those two jokers even ate a sandwich they say "smelled", (seems rather stupid) but I will personally be going back! I actually Tried this place out for the first time today I work in the building across the street and heard a lot about their special UPTOWN Drink and tasty Fish Sandwiches. I arrived to work a half hour early and thought I'll give it a try I got a 2 piece fish sandwich and Potato Salad. I was shocked that it cost $5.00 for two pieces of fish but I still decided to go forward with my order. It took 30 mins for two pieces of fish and potato Salad! I was highly annoyed with the wait but told my self hopefully it was worth the taste to be honest I wasn't at all pleased the potato salad taste like it was made with cheap mayo and was missing the creamy texture that I love in my potato salad what I found most disappointing was the size of the fish they were tiny fish I had more bread then fish! I wouldn't rule this place out in perhaps I'll try again in the near future the gentleman working ask me to let him know what I thought and I guess to some it up I thought it was good just overly priced if you know you gonna give small fish at least be kind and give a third piece I just disliked the potato salad all together $2.50 is a fair price just didn't like it. read more

I don't know what Steve or Adam's motives are but all I can say is destructive or racist! Why would you want to write such slander to destroy and young entrepreneur working hard managing a worthy business is beyond me. But be mindful of the motives of certain individuals. For all we know, these are the friends of the neighboring trucks on the same streets who are jealous of a little competition. sad. you can't please everyone and no food is perfect, but this is outright slander rather than a food review. Moving on... I am quite picky when it comes to eating food especially from food trucks. The Steak and Take Food Truck that is stationed on Mulberry is one of the cleanest, friendly and satisfying food trucks I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. The prices are great and the menu give you a nice variety of foods that most who eat lunch in the area would appreciate: Fish sub sandwiches, steak n take and chicken n take sandwiches, hot wings, burgers, steak fries, etc. For those who are not aware, the steak n take or chicken n take sandwiches are not the same as a cheese steak or chicken steak. The meat is chopped and a special sauce added with sauteed chopped onions and peppers added. The consistency is different and the meat not as big as in a "typical cheese steak", but delicious nonetheless. I am addicted to the fish subs. I eat half for lunch and half for dinner...you won't regret getting it and you will be stuff and satisfied! BELIEVE THAT! MY WORD MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME. IF IT WASN'T GOOD, I WOULD BE GOING BACK TIME AND TIME AGAIN! I patronize this food truck at least 3 times a week and have no regrets either time. The fish sandwiches are made from large soft whole wheat rolls that you can get TWO MEALS out of for only $6.00 and it includes lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and tarter. If you want any other condiments, you can ask for it with no problem. They also have fish specials that include 3 pieces of fish, 2 slices of whole wheat bread, steak fries and a drink! All for $5!!! You can't beat that! I recommend the 'uptown drink" a mix of tea and lemonade...delicious! Its difficult nowadays to find a business, let alone a food truck, that gives you good old fashioned respect and hospitality, is clean, has good food that is filling and affordable.
