E-star was recommended by a friend. I'll probably come back, but here are some flaws that I noticed. Here are some pros and cons. One pro is that it was very clean. The floor was almost spotless and the table was ok. Nothing that dirty. Another thing is that they have a decently great-sized selection. I do complain that some of the taste of the foods don't go through that well. The Tiramisu was by far the least spongy of the many I tried. It was not very feathery. I love this place because I love sushi, and their selection is good for me and the price for lunch during the week is under $10 the time we went. They have a lot of Chinese food options and all kinds of meat and one of my favorites, CRAWFISH!!! They also provide gloves for every trip you make, and the staff uses masks. I rarely go to buffets but hadn't eaten all day so I thought I would go to a Chinese one. For years I have driven by eStar and they were always busy so I decided to go there. The restaurant had low lighting and a nice atmosphere. The food was actually pretty good, hot, and fresh. Especially liked the cabbage soup, clams, crab ragoon, potstickers, spring rolls, green beans, fresh fruit, catfish, and wings. Calamarie was very good but a couple pieces chewy. Didn't care for the maki but I am very picky about maki and sushi. There were many dishes I would have liked to try like crawfish and crab claws. I checked in at the hostess station and was told to follow a smiling chatty robot that reminded of Rosie from the Jetsons. She even came by later to sing happy birthday to a child at the next table. I was very impressed with the seafood, the mussels were excellent, they have a nice squid salad, fresh crab, crawfish and oysters. The vegetable options were all fresh, nothing was too saucy. Good mix of meats, veggies, soups, and salads. The spring rolls were the only thing I was not impressed with. I went early on a Saturday morning and you could tell them made everything fresh that day, they were still bringing out dishes as they were opening. The atmosphere is nice; TVs for viewing, you have servers that refill you drinks and check up on you. There is a bar for alcoholic beverages and they have a buy one get on free happy hour. It's a buffet, yes, but it's actually pretty good even for buffet standards. The dining room is actually really nice and almost has a club feel to it. The dinner and weekend offerings include more seafood, but the lunch also has a few offerings as well. The sushi spread is one of the best I've seen. A good assortment of rolls are offered. There's unagi nigiri and even salmon and tuna. Not the best quality, but not too shabby if you grab the right pieces. There's even sashimi available at dinner and on weekends. Fried baby octopus are tossed in with the calamari... Not sure if that counts as calamari, but it is tasty. The pork ribs are surprisingly tasty with its sweet glaze. There's an array of cold items too including a side salad. On the downside, we came on a weekend, and they had oysters on the half shell which is impressive except they were barely cold. Pass. I also grabbed a soup spoon and returned to my table to discover there was a scrap of paper dried up on the underside of it. Ick. Desserts are lacking as it is those premade little cakes, but there is ambrosia salad, canned fruit with almond jello as well as fresh fruit, and soft served ice cream, plus house made flan. My parents are always dining here because they love buffets! I can't complain. It's a buffet and everything is self served. The food here is always fresh and tastes great compared to any other Asian buffet I have tried in Houston. Sushi is good (4/5), they have pizza, crawfish when it's in season, soups, salad, sausage, and so much more! If I want to come in to stuff my tummy, I know I can do it here easily. I've been going to V star on 45 south at Woodridge intersection for many years. I used to live in south Houston. Moved to north houston when I bought my first home. Wife and I decided to try this place....big mistake. They may be the same owner, but the taste is nowhere near. Fried rice was 70% cabbage, and it was really plain. Same thing with the lo mein. Pepper chicken and shrimp were soggy. Crab Rangoon were... Tasteless. Fried fish was mushy. Sashimi was frozen solid. Egg rolls were okay.. at best. BBQ steak were too sweet, and low quality meat. BBQ wings were too dry. Baked salmon was also too dry. Anything that I ate that was not terrible was mediocre at best... Here is the thing. V star is a well known brand around Houston. The definition of what makes a brand worthwhile is CONSISTENCY. If I am craving a quarter pounder any Mcdonalds in Houston is gonna give me the exact same taste. With V star, you have to go to the specific one you liked the taste in. Namely the Woodridge one. Thats crap...advise to the owner: Get your most experienced best cook from V star and send them to each of your location for 2 months each to teach the other cooks how to achieve the exact same taste. I PROMISE YOU if you achieve the V star taste in all your locations your profits will double. The V star location remains the most profitable for a reason.
