My girlfriend and I just had a fantastic dinner date at this charming gem of a Chinese restaurant. Everything, from the floors to the ceiling, was spotless, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. We were served bottled water right away and promptly ordered a large bowl of egg drop soup along with an order of crab rangoon (6 pieces). The soup was perfectly seasoned and easily one of the best I've ever had. It was served with hand cut crispy noodles, and the large order, served family style with small cups, was generous enough for a family of five to each enjoy a portion. The crab rangoon was also excellent and filled generously, cooked evenly, and finished with a slight sweetness. I'll definitely be ordering these every time I come back. For our entrees, we ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and the General Tso's Chicken. While both dishes were good, we both preferred the Kung Pao Chicken, as the General Tso's seemed to be missing something in the sauce. Everything we tasted felt a step above standard Chinese takeout. If nothing else, it's obvious that the people here take pride in what they do, and that pride shines through in the food. We weren't sure what to expect when we walked into Grand Hunan Chinese Restaurant, but we certainly weren't expecting to find our new favorite spot. Thank you to all the staff who made our dine in experience so delightful, and a special thank you to the young man who chased me down the road to return the leftovers I had absentmindedly left at the table. You can't beat this kind of customer service. I came to pick up my to-go order and overheard the gentleman at the desk helping someone over the phone. He comped her egg rolls because they didn't have the wontons like she wanted. Although he and I chatted only briefly, the vibe he gave off was that of a lifelong friend. Came here about 3 weeks ago and my experience was honestly miserable, I thought this was a Chinese restaurant. to start off, the lo mein was undercooked and it had a bitter taste to it. Don't get me started on those "crab rangoons", they were soggy wontons filled with just cream cheese.. Additionally the spring rolls were genuinely nasty, the vegetables tasted as if they were marinated in chemical and the spring rolls also felt store bought. We ordered the spring rolls, sauteed green beans, and shrimp fried rice and had more than 2 could share (leftovers were great!). Not only was the food absolutely delicious (fresh, very flavorful and well-seasoned), ordering was easy (very pleasant gentleman on the line), pick up was fast and easy, and the prices were very reasonable. First time here. Read a couple reviews and was prepared for the love/hate protrayed by the reviews. First impression was similar to other small Chinese food establishments, except there was just a young girl in street clothes behind a counter. OK I get it, it's casual. VERY casual. I explain I was waiting on a friend for lunch and she directed me to the dining area which was vacant. "just come up here to order". So no table service. It was a little strange but OK. After my friend arrived we looked over the paper menu which was extensive. I went up to the counter first and ordered, and requested water. I was then instructed the only water they had was bottled and I'd have to buy it. So not even tap water in a plastic glass. I had a drink in the car and at that moment thought about going out to get it. But general manners kept me in my seat. My friend ordered and she was not happy about the "service" window of the front counter attitude. At this point we could have gone to Panda Express. The young lady did bring the food to our table all in to go containers already. So does this place have no dishes, no dishwasher? If it's a take out restaurant then that's what they should be. Don't lead on as to be a sit down restaurant when you are not. A napkin kit was included but no extra napkins. No condiments at the table reiterating their take out vibe. A few people came to pick up food but we were the only people sitting down. I asked for some salt/pepper but it was not available. SInce the restaurant was extremely slow you'd think someone might have thought to check on us just out of customer service guilt, but no. There was not a thought to us as the only customers in the place. I thought the food was just OK. The fried rice was a tannish yellow color and had a funny taste. BUt I was never asked steamed or fried so fried it is. I didn't eat it. My chicken with vegetable was good. Would I go back here? NO Would I call to order to go? FALSE ADVERTISING! This is advertised as the "best Chinese Restaurant in Houston". Well, it's not. Wanted to go to a good Chinese restaurant with my gal-pals for lunch and conversation. This is NOT a restaurant. It is nothing more than a Chinese carry-out! You order at the desk, pay and take a seat. I asked for tea. Oh no, we don't have tea. ??? We have soft drinks in the cooler! I told the cashier how disappointed I was that this is NOT a restaurant. She said "Well, it once was...." Service was mediocre. Food the same. Our meals arrived in plastic to-go containers, with a package of cheap plastic flatware and one paper-thin small napkin with packaged salt/pepper and two soy sauce packets. Of course she expected a tip. When I stopped laughing I ate my so-so meal, leaving more than half of it. I ordered the chicken and string beans. Too salty!!! The fried rice had a curious taste. The general tsu chicken is fine but any veggies served with or within your meal seems old and so far from fresh that you would swear they were not grown in soil from earth. Best advice I can give is to never order the spicy shrimp. It's not the heat that's the problem, it's the extreme over use of sauce. Well, that was our LAST ORDER WITH GRAND HUNAN! The Hot and Spicy Shrimp was SO HOT that I couldn't eat it, and I am a jalapeno lover and a Chinese chili sauce lover so I can take the heat. Most customers make delivery/pickup orders here. Inside is quiet and un-inviting. Their food is ok for Chinese-American fast-food. Their fried cheese wontons are called "Crab Yummi"= funny but good. Their House Special pan-fried noodles are delicious. I try to stay away from Americanized Chinese items like anything with the names: Sweet & Sour, General Tso's, Orange, etc. Just ask the workers what's the best menu item. The cashier girl does speak English. Keep in mind a real Chinese restaurant with Chinese employees (most likely family-operated) might not speak English very well. Understand that when you go to a REAL ethnic restaurant, the employees there probably didn't learn English as their first language. So respect that. read more

This is my family and I's go-to place for fried rice. I have tried every Chinese spot within a 10-mile radius and this is the one that reminds me most of my home Chinese delivery in Long Island City, Queens. We usually order a small shrimp fried rice or the house special fried rice. If you want extra shrimp, it will cost you an extra $2, but it is well worth it. They do not skimp on shrimp. Same goes for the house special. They really are plentiful with the chicken, pork, and beef. I've also tried their dumplings and eggrolls. Everything I've tried is tasty and fresh. I've never received a wrong order from here. Sadly, I'm deducting a star because I wish they would add bean sprouts to their fried rice.
