Giant Gap Campground was amazing! You can pull right up to your campsite, and from site #11 we had quick, direct access to the water--just a short walk away. Definitely recommend bringing a kayak or paddleboard. I had zero phone service with Xfinity, which actually made it the perfect chance to truly disconnect. read more

Really nice small lake, super quiet place real in the middle of the forest. I didn't like the fact the bathrooms were super gross nowhere to wash your hands and can't even enjoy your food due to the wasp out there. Their is a small trail to get to the lake which you do have to cross through a campground , my stay there was not the greatest, we had some super loud neighbors with super loud music for hours late at night and until another neighbor asked them to turn it town other than that they would have kept it going. There is no check in you just arrive and check for your spot and last name. Don't recommend with little ones honestly my toddler did not enjoy his stay had to leave a day early. Great for paddle boarding though or kayaking. Plus we couldn't make campfires due to "high risk" what's the point of camping with no campfire? I saw no risk the weather was beautiful. read more

We camped here early August. I would say this place is on the rougher end of the spectrum of car camping. The pros were the lake was gorgeous and the campsites were clean and remote. The cons were the bathroom and limited running water situation. Our group tried hard to limit our use of the facilities. The oddest thing was that every night at 9pm we could hear some automatic gunfire in the distance for about a half hour. One night a neighbor camper responded with their own gunfire and it scared my daughter enough to beg us to leave. We didn't but it put us on edge because it sounded like a war zone. I can't decide if it was worth a return trip. read more

I have stayed at Giant Gap a couple of times. So far I haven't found the perfect campsite at this location but still looking. First, the drive here is easy. The key is to set your GPS to Foresthill and then re-set it once there to the campground which is about 20 miles away from there. If you set your GPS straight to the campsite, some will send you another way which I have heard is treacherous. When I'm headed to this campsite, I like to pass the exit by one exit and swing by Knee Deep Brewery to grab some beer for the trip. Also I recommend the IGA in Foresthill for last stop for ice and wood (and a pretty view). The first time we stayed here, we stayed at site 4. The pros of this site are that it's a little back and you don't feel extremely close to any other spots. It's also close to the vault toilets, trash and a water spigot. However the cons are that it's pretty far walk to the water and it was hard to fit two tents on this spot. The second time I stayed here we stayed in site 19. This is right next to the camp host so like other reviews have mentioned, the generator is going most of the day. However this spot is a very close walk to water and you can even see it from the site. This site also is pretty large and for being a single you could easily fit probably around 4 tents on this site. It is a bit of a walk in to the site though and if I stayed at this site again, I would bring a pop-up as there barely any shade. So why 4 stars and not 5? The vault toilets at this location are horrendous. I almost threw up from the smell one morning. Also a note to all, make sure you put everything in the bear locker because they do rummage through! read more

Stayed here this weekend. Everything was great overall. Besides around 10:30pm some 20 year old kids rolled up in an open camp spot right next to ours. They obviously didn't pay or reserve the spot as we could hear their conversation about freeloading. Wouldn't have minded but they were so so loud. Super bright lights on. I understand it wasn't the campsites fault they did this but wish they would've patrolled or something so it didn't ruin it for us and I'm sure everyone around us. read more

I brought my whole family here and our dogs. They loved it. One night we wanted to go down to the water but that was a bad idea. It was soooo dark and then we heard growling and saw beady eyes reflecting our flashlight. I don't know if it was a bear or some other monster but we didn't stick around to find out. Thanks to my awesome Yelp friend Bridget W for suggesting this place. We arrived on Thursday and were the only ones in the entire campground. Even the camp host was gone (just an FYI the camp host leaves after the labor day weekend so there is no firewood available). We were lucky enough to snag site #10 which apparently is very popular. I can see why though. You park in one spot and walk a short trail to your site. Its nice a secluded and the view of the lake is awesome. The campground is clean and well maintained even when there is not a camp host, a park ranger comes around a few times a day. The bathrooms are vault toilets. There are no showers. There is also a spigot but only for drinking water, not for bathing or doing dishes. There are several great spots that have a good view of the lake. The others are great as well though. One last note: the sites are very small and many of them have designated areas for your tent but this area is fairly small. If you have a large tent like ours many of the sites will not work. If you have a small tent you'll be find. Overall: This will definitely be a new campground favorite for us! read more

As this campground is exactly 1hr 15 min from my driveway in Sacramento it has quickly become one of my go-to weekend camping destinations. I have been coming here for years as a result. Generally the campground (and its adjacent sister campground Shirttail Creek) open in March and stay open thru mid October (weather permitting). Given that the temperature in summer is almost always at least ten degrees cooler than good ol' Sacto, this place is wildly popular because of the wonderful lake. Giant Gap has a paved hiking/biking trail that goes a majority of the way around the lake. It runs right thru the Manzanita day use area and also has several bbq sites and picnic tables strewn along the trail. As an avid camper, I love how friendly and helpful these camp hosts are up here. They do a great job ensuring the sites are clean and the bathrooms kept. Never had a bad experience here. If you see a black and blue kayak hauling around the lake with a floating cooler full of Coronas roped behind say hello to a fellow yelper and I'll toss you a cold one ;) After reading reviews about the bears, I am shocked that as frequent as I go up here I have yet to see one. Ever. Common sense is probably a major factor here as I keep food in coolers covered in my car and/or in bear lockers where available, wash the dinner dishes and toss the trash before turning in. This campground has mostly fully shaded sites and a couple of large group ones. Sites #2 & #3 are right on top of eachother with a path between them so they can act as a group site if you are fortunate to get both. Site #10 is my personal favorite and is almost guaranteed to be prebooked for a weekend. It is secluded from other sites and has the best view of the lake with its own path that connects to the hiking trail. Only downside is parking is really limited and you have a ways to lug your gear from where you park for that site. Although there are a couple of turnouts for trailers, this campground is best suited for RVs on the smaller side, like under 24ft. read more

Loved this campsite!! My friends and I reserved this spot in January Book online. 48.00 reservation fee. Two cars parking available. Additional cars are 5.00. There was just enough space for three cars. They have water spigots in each campsite plus a clean drinking water spigots near the restroom! *yes they have pottys...the Rangers refilled the tp everyday too!! ;) Fire pits and picnic tables...we brought some firewood but not enough..they don't sell firewood..or they were out BUT the ranger said, "if the tree/wood is dead and down," we can use it for our fire. The scenic lake was rocky, really muddy and low but still beautiful either way!! Fun, spacious campsite!! We'll have to return again soon! read more

Our experience here was actually terrible despite the grounds being gorgeous. We got injured and went to camp host, they didnt have a satellite phone or radio to call for help. The woman was friendly though. We also left in the middle of the night to due a massive loud party and guns still being shot at midnight. Many campers asked them to quiet down and they would scream louder and turn up music. awe decided to pack up in the rain after midnight and drive 3 hours home. Worst camping trip ever! I am guessing the camp host wont intervene if there are disturbances because she cant even call for backup. read more

This is a very nice lake and campground. The lake is great for kayaking. It is convenient for us as we live nearby. No hookups, but water and vault toilets are available. It is quiet and relaxing with one exception. The camp host in site 20 is a inconsiderate slob who runs a generator most of the day, spoiling the serenity of the environment and your enjoyment of getting away. We ask her if it was necessary to run it allday and her reply was that she could run it until 10pm (Quiet Time). I don't know why they allow clods like this to run the camp ground. If you stay there move as far away from her site as possible or you will be listening to a generator the whole time, spoiling what camping is for. read more

Incredibly beautiful location! Sugar Pine Reservoir is absolutely stunning. Campsites at Giant Gap are closer to the water than the neighboring Shirttail. The sites are relatively spaced apart and the camp host is always there to help! I'm definitely coming back... as soon as I got service, I booked another trip! read more

We stayed here from 7/14/21 through 7/16/21 at site #18, which is a double site. The site itself was really nice and spacious. We had 12 people total (max for the site...5 adults + 7 kids). We were able to fit two 10-person tents and one 8-person tent on the site without issues. We also had a 10x10 pop-up netted gazebo canopy where the kids played to keep out of the dirt & away from the bugs in the evening. There were a crap ton of wasps (yellowjackets aka meat bees). They literally woke us up with their buzzing both mornings because so many of them just roll into the campsites looking for food (despite everything being in the bear boxes). Whenever you cook or eat, expect them to come in full force. We finally figured out that if we took the bags that the meat was in and/or a bowl of eggs and set it near, but away from where we were cooking or eating, they'd be more likely to land there and enjoy some scraps. Sometimes sharing is the solution. We had a canopy with netting we set up over one of the picnic tables, but it wasn't fully "sealed" (it was an accessory), so some wasps would still find their way in, but not too many. We also had an additional 6' table we set up for the kids to do rock painting and such during the day. They also created their own camp chair circle, away from the fire to sit & eat (age range was 4-13). We also had two pop-up tent bathrooms (bucket with toilet seat lid) that we brought as we'd read about the bathrooms. They were pretty, pretty bad, but not quite as bad as I'd imagined from the reviews. But we only used them if absolutely necessary (like while unpacking or packing back up). The lake / reservoir.... I mean it has beautiful scenery and I know that we're in a drought, so that definitely has an impact, but.... it was ROCKY & MUDDY. The water wasn't clear at all...not anywhere that we could see or get to without a kayak or something. Our kids had to keep shoes on as the rocks aren't the typical gravel or rounded rocks, but sharp pointy ones. And the mud is like quicksand. My sister in law accidentally stepped in the mud and her foot/shoe was suctioned in so hard that she fell forward with her other knee and got a rock literally stuck IN her knee. Like...she stood up and it was poking out. I was trying to rush in to help my 4 year old and had to step through the muddy portion and literally sunk down to my thighs. I have NEVER experienced mud like this. Lol. There's also zero shade at the lake, but that's to be expected with the drought. The creek that is supposed to run through the neighboring Shirttail Creek Campground is completely dried up right now as well. With all that said, it was still nice down by the water. There's plenty of space, so everyone is very well spread out. We only saw one piece of trash (a glass bottle in the mud that my kid almost stepped on) and disposed of it ourselves, but at least it wasn't littered like crazy. My brother in law almost caught a fish, but it got off his line. So the fish are there. The camp host is at site #20. They were kind and we saw the husband driving around in the cart a few times every day. The wife is deaf, so she has to read your lips. They sell wood there, but it's supposed to be $7 per box or 3 boxes for $20. The issue is there are no boxes & when we asked how much wood comes in a box, she just said "It's like $1 per piece). But the pieces are literally 12" long and maybe 5" in diameter, so just be aware that they will not last long at all. We paid $20 (it was all the cash we had), but received 19 pieces of wood, while 2-3 of those pieces were about 8" long and 3" in diameter. So definitely not worthy of the cost. Lol. See if you can grab some local wood along the way or be sure to bring charcoal. We were verrrry conservative of our wood (and had a propane stove that we did most of our cooking on) and used the last of it on our last night...didn't even have enough for the night, actually. The nice thing is that this campsite is MILES from the highway. So you hear ZERO traffic. It is pure quiet other than the sounds at the site. I read some reviews about generators making sound at night. Though #18 is near the camp host at #20, we could not hear their generator at all from our site. #23 was directly below us (across the paved road through the campsite) and we never heard their generator either. The only thing we heard from them was someone playing the recorder or flute or something. Lol. Site #19 was directly next to us, but the brush was so dense, we couldn't hear or see them through it. Sites #13 & #14 were above us (uphill shared space), but far enough that while we could see them, we could barely hear them at all. We were also right next to water, trash, and restrooms. But we definitely did not notice it (nor the smell) at all. In fact, it was the only time I've been near any of those that I actually enjoyed it. Overall, loved the campground, but don't plan to come back due to the rocky & muddy lake. read more

this is my favorite campground at Sugar Pine. My friends and I try to come up 2-3 times a summer. Site 1 is a group site, plenty of space for 3 tents even if there is only 1 actual tent pad. there are stairs from the driveway up to the site.. it's not difficult for most... but could be difficult for certain people , so the warning would be if you have knee issues or trouble walking at all, i'd avoid this site. Site 26 is also a group site... plenty of room for 3 tents, two bear boxes, two tables... pretty shady & close to the water- this is probably my favorite site, but it's hard to get since a lot of people feel that way about this site. Site 29 is a single site, but we were able to fit 3 tents.. it was shady and an easy walk to the water, we had site 2 (also a single site) for our 3rd car but we didn't have our stuff there. Sites 19 & 13 are also single sites... you can walk thru the trees to each... you can fit about 2 tents in each site- so if you are a group of six , you will need both sites but beware- both are in direct sun for the better part of the day so you will need an EZ UP or tarps for shade. A warning for Site 19.. it's kind of a climb up to the site.. not hard if you are able bodied...but if you are older , or if you have lots of heavy stuff... it'll take your breath away. Regarding the lake... when it's full, or near full- it's awesome.. beautiful.. the water is lovely and so is the landscape. With the drought, its a longer walk to the water.. it's rockier and muddier...not as pretty...but what can you do? we are in a drought- most lakes have the same problem...it's still a nice spot...bring a wagon to make it easier to transport stuff to the lake and spend the whole day there... read more

Camped over the 4th of July weekend. Was perfect weather at nighttime but got a tad bit warm during the day. Great man-made lake that is around 4 miles to go all the way around, half of the path is paved so bike appropriate and good for jogging. When we went a portion of the trail was washed out and closed off but we were able to bypass it anyways with our dogs. Trail can start at the day use park then keeps going through the camp sites till you make the full circle. We regretted not bringing our swimsuits. We reserved campsite #5. All the campsites are all pretty secluded and spacious, but when we passed by #10 we were jealous in that it was the end of the culdesac and walkable to the lake and very secluded. Dog friendly. Vault toilets (no lights, bring headlamps). They have a potable water faucet. I thought the fire pits were well maintained. If you are bringing a RV/Trailer and coming from the South, make sure to take the Forest Hill route (slower route when it shows up on Google Maps). It is much better maintained and spacious. On our way up we went the quicker route and had no trouble as we just had one truck but the trailer in front of couldn't make a sharp turn and was stuck and actually damaged a portion of it, we were able to guide it through thankfully but go at your own risk. read more

We were on our way to Auburn, for a hike, when we first stopped off at a small town store and the store clerk suggested us trying Sugar Pine Trail instead. We were told it was a very quiet and hidden walking/hike that surrounds a gorgeous lake. When we decided on that idea, from the moment we got out and saw the lake, we were wowed! Such a sight! A hidden gem for sure! Also, even if nice weather and a holiday, this place was incredibly peaceful- there was barely anyone around. The overall lake is in great condition- very clean and very blue. There's fishing for rainbow trout. There's boating and rafting. The park is roughly four miles long to get all the way around. My suggestion would be to wear a swimsuit and put comfortable clothes/workout clothes, and comfortable shoes on, hike for a while, jump in the water for a bit, and then hike again, and then cool off when needed. I intend on doing that next time around! Loved this place. I can't wait to return. read more

Came here in July 2013 for the first time, and possibly the last time. My husband and I LOVE camping, so when we pick a campsite we just go onto recreation.gov or reserveamerica.com and just pick whatever comes up in the search. Giant Gap is only a little over an hour way from Sacramento so it sounded like a good pick for a short two night stay. I have been a camper since I was a baby (first camping trip I was 3 months old!) and I've hiked a lot and even have been backpacking a few times, meaning, I'm ALWAYS prepared, and I'm not afraid of the wilderness. So I checked out all the "know before you go" and there were no wildlife warning so I assumed it was just a regular ol car campsite. First night, a baby bear runs through our campsite. Of course all I can think is, baby bear, mama bear. Woke up to a bear sniffing the tent while I was sleeping! THERE ARE NOT BEAR BOXES AT EVERY SITE ONLY AT A FEW. There are no signs saying how to protect yourself from bears and no one (camp hosts) told us there were bears. The next day we talked to a few other campers and they all told us bears had been coming and raiding the campsites every night. One guy didn't have a car OR a site with a bear box so he had been hit 3 times! He had 3 children and no food, the camp hosts were not very helpful or sympathetic to his situation. Finally the evening of the second night a camp host came to our site to warn us of bear (ummm yeah we know) and told us to put all of our food in our car (ummm yeah we know that already too) the only thing that pisses me off about that is that if you know anything about bears and them coming out of the wild to civilization for food is that you shouldn't leave food in a car. Bears will attack the car and try to rip open the car for the food, yeah once again NO BEAR BOXES. On the plus side, the reservoir is BEAUTIFUL. It's easily accessible so it's easy to bring your kayak or small boat to shore. They don't allow speed boats so it's wonderful to kayak in. It's also amazing to be so far away from the bears in the middle of the lake. The sites are very big and pretty well spaced out. There are a few that have lake views (surprisingly those are also the ones with bear boxes) but they fill up fast. Since I now know the dangers of this campground I would possibly come back. But we just had such a bad experience with communication from the hosts I highly doubt it. They literally told us the USFS doesn't want to do anything about the bears. Once bears become comfortable, they won't be afraid of humans, and there is communication to the campers on how to protect themselves. Shame too because this place truly is beautiful. read more

Sugar pine campground, a very beautiful place. Giant gap camp and its sister camp shirttail both have 30 sites on each side. Single site 24.00 a night, double sites are 48.00 an night . giant gap camp has both first come first serve sites and reservable sites. First come (can't reserve online) # 2,3,11,16,21,23,25, and 29 the website does not show all of them.. In a single site, any car after one is a five dollar a day. In a double well there's a fee after two cars. There is an amazing lake to swim in and a hikable trail that goes around the lake. I've seen reviews about water snakes but in the years I've been here I've never seen one. This is a great place to come to camp, friendly host with a lot of information to give located on site 20. I definitely recommend this place ! read more

We went mid-week May 7-9th, 2014. The first night we had the entire campground all to ourselves. The camphost had the day off and wasn't there, so the adjacent campground host greeted us and then let us do our thing. This is my new most favorite, tucked away gem! Hiking and shooting areas are super close and every single one of the sites were totally perfect. If you are a tent camper, there is even a hidden little site that overlooks the lake. Many tucked in sites perfect for a small trailer, some large campers, and many tents. Camp host was terrific. They have bear boxes in every single campsite now. Some of the fire pits even have really cool upgrades. The bathrooms have pit toilets, but the stalls are clean and even stocked with premuim toilet paper while we were there. Many water faucets and restrooms available. There is a 4.5 loop around the lake. It's a beautiful hike. It's deceptive though - bring plenty of water and a snack if you want to do this. There are plenty of places to through your innertubes, rafts, and kayaks into the water from this campground. We did get bears. Any of the previous reviewers who were upset about this and know that you shouldn't put food in your car could have and should have found alternative methods of storing food - perhaps via rope in a tree, away from the trunk, and where the bear will have a hard time reaching it. As far as the other Yelper who was demanding a refund for a natural wildfire, well, that's just plain idiocracy - Nor the host, the forest service, or recreative.gov should have to give refunds for an act of God. Anyway, come PREPARED to CAMP. Afterall, its camping....there are bugs, weather, and things you should bring anytime you camp ANYWHERE, every time. Its also the Tahoe National Forest. Just count on furry critters anytime you are in the woods. ..... read more

Great family camping place. Our second time camping here. All sites close to the lake is walking distance. Literally 50 feet out. Small and quaint with a Great Lake to swim and kayak. Currently, the lake is low. Our walking distance to the lake is about a 1/4 mile. Heard rumors that they released reservoir for rafting. Lake looks barren. It ruined the beauty. You can still swim but it's pretty muddy but lake is warm. We still had an amazing time. read more

well, this site is waaaaay out there. I wouldn't recommend it for trailers or motorhomes unless you are really good at navigating hairpin turns on a steep grade. Or if you're like my mother, super uncomfortable going on narrow roads with no guard rails and a bottom puckering drop off to one side. When you come out of the main road, there is Manzanita day use grounds but no sign directing you to Giant Gap (I guessed correctly and took the right fork). We had site 9, which is kind of snugged up to site 8. It was nice that there is a built-in flat spot for tents at each site, though some big ol black ants were contesting their right to our flat spot. Also very nice bear-proof food lockers at each site. The bathrooms are pit toilets, not very smelly which was nice. However, the toilet is right there when you walk in the door, rather than set back. That almost caused me an embarrassing spill as I was eager to get in. Like other reviews state, try to book site 10 if you can. It looks awesome read more

I have stayed at Sugar Pine Giant Gap camp site now for almost a week and a half I am enjoying my vacation tremendously. The camp ground is very clean and quiet. The camp host Mike runs a great family oriented camp ground and honestly goes above and beyond to insure is guests stay is awesome. Beautiful, very peaceful lake. Disappointed in the camping area. So many cut trees all over the place, including in our campsite; large trees. Not sure why, but to just let them lay all around. Looked like a logging site, not a campsite. Very expensive for Forest Service campground. Dumping only available on Sundays is not very inviting for all of us retired, mid-week campers. Doubtful we will be back. Oh, and the lakeside sites are only for handicapped campers. What's with that! read more

Giant Gap is overall a pretty mellow peaceful small campground, about 30 sites. Very wooded and shaded, and they do sell firewood onsite during the summer months. There are not really lake front sites, but close enough short walk from the campsites. There are a few, but they are walk-in and ADA only. The trail around the lake is about 3.5 miles, pretty flat and easy. The lake itself is pretty small, you could easily kayak the whole thing in like an hour. Closest grocery store would be around Forestville, about 30 min away, so come prepared. read more

I have been camping here for about 10 years. I absolutely love this place. The hosts are always friendly and the campsites are always clean. The fact that they are pet friendly is even more amazing. The sites are mostly shaded and the trail here is breathtaking. We will definitely be back and I highly recommend this place. read more
