The place was beautiful and I highly recommend this house for any group/family. It has a huge common area and loft for everyone to relax and a superb hot tub to help out your muscles after a long day on the mountain. The Cons: - Can't get the address until you are up in the mountains. I can only guess that this is the way Gary has always done things and he isn't comfortable with updating the process. He likes for you to call him along your drive up so that he can meet you, then personally take you to the cabin. It's easy enough, but made it where I had to communicate with the rest of my group after we got up there. Good thing we all ended up get cell service (something that has been a problem before). - Beds aren't that comfortable, but better than a lot of other places we had previously rented. - Ants, make sure that you keep your food in the fridge or zip lock bags. One thing to consider is that you have to pay the deposit upon arrival. They did return the fee to me just after the 2 weeks they promised, but it could be a problem if someone doesn't have a traditional credit card. This is the first time I have had to pay it up front. Otherwise, the house was awesome and Gary was very easy to work with. They even gave us a break on the linen rental and weeknight stay!

However, convincing a group of my (less outdoors-oriented) friends to chip in and commit to living in a tent for three days was a hefty proposition. So I found the middle ground and decided to rent a large cabin in Big Bear on the mountain. The Getaway was spectacular! When we arrived Gary (the owner) met me to give us a tour of the property and explain all the amenities. First things first- Gary had made sure the hot-tub was serviced and in top shape the day we arrived. That means all the chemicals had been changed, the jets had been checked, and the heating elements were fully functional. I mention this first for two reasons: 1) I've been relayed multiple stories of friends renting cabins and being promised hot tubs, only to arrive to a non-functional spa; and 2) The hot tub was the hit of the party! It can accommodate 4 full-size adults at a time and is covered from direct sunlight and rain. I bring up the rain because my group had the luck to arrive on a weekend of rain and thunderstorms (good thing we weren't deep in the National Forest!). However, the rain didn't spoil our trip in the slightest. We were able to do two days of rain hikes (with ponchos) that were a nice change-up from the usual Southern California climate (you really can't complain about the rain when it only happens two weeks a year). The rain kept us cool and hydrated, and the fresh, wet air through the trees was a refreshing break from the smells cooking on asphalt back in LA. We were a group of 10 and we were never wanting for amenities during our trip. Because of the rain we decided to spend our nights inside, though we cooked each meal on the unit's propane grill. The propane tank was filled and ready-to-go when we arrived, and the grill itself had enough space to cook for all ten people at once, plus room for extras. The game room was also a big hit. There was a bumper pool table and most importantly: foosball. Now I've never been a huge foosball guy (it's an expensive game to play in bars, always trading in your dollars for quarters) but I immediately became a huge fan of the game after being able to play on our own table. We did tournaments and teams and a round-robin with seeding... It was an unexpectedly amazing addition to the cabin's amenities. I guarantee that half the men of the party were in that room 40% of our stay. As per lodging, there were three really large, really well-decorated bedrooms on the bottom floor that I delegated to couples. Every couple was very happy with their sleeping arrangements. On the top floor is a master bedroom with an adjacent 1/2 bedroom with bunk beds. I gave the top floor to the single gentlemen of the group and they were all very happy with their quarters and the proximity to the game room. All-in-all we had a wonderful time at The Getaway, weather included. We would have like to spend more time at the lake (5 minutes away by car) but because of the thunder and lightning we didn't want to risk it. However, the Vons (also 5 minutes away) was there to provide everything we needed for the weekend, from food to grill to supplies for the hike to paper towels and condiments. We spent our weekend hiking during the days, relaxing in the hot tub and game rooms in the afternoon, and grilling and playing cards in the evening. There was ample room for everyone to sit and eat together (we wished we could have put the outdoor balcony bar to more use!) and no one felt excluded from the festivities due to space. I would highly recommend a stay at the Getaway! Everyone in my group left feeling happy and fulfilled, and for the price it just can't be beat! This is super dangerous and luckily my youngest daughter did not get burned. There is no reason to allow your water heater to pump out scolding hot water, that is a simple adjustment. Fan in the bathroom is broken upstairs so to get air flow from a shower, you need to open the window which is in direct view of the neighbors living space. How the cleaning service does not notice this is confusing. The towels in the bathrooms are literally rags, all mixed matched, some with holes and super thin. Just a bit odd when you need 4 towels to dry off. The kitchen did not have a decent quality or array of items needed. The dishwasher had a rubber band holding the utensil tray on. The fireplace/living room was why we choose this location so that was as expected. The lingering Christmas decorations were a bit odd but with the overall quality of the property, it makes me think the property is just not either rented often or maintained. And last but not least, while we stayed for 2 nights, keep in mind we were out and about all day, a critter chewed all the wiring in our engine. It definitely was at this cabin since our engine light went on when we were departing on our last day. We assumed it was a faulty sensor since my car is new but as it turns out, $1,067 later, something ate through our engine while it was parked at the unit. And, that $1,067 may not fix it. If it doesn't work, the dealership told me they would need to replace this entire section. I did not bother to ask how much that was going to be. There are signs all over reminding you to not feed critters and you can not use their city issued trash receptacles. They want you to take the trash with you to this local dump which for this cabin, was in a convenient location. Not a big deal they want you to take the trash, but I am assuming the critter issue is a much bigger problem. We also opted to have the trip insurance just in case of weather. Although they cover a wide array of random things, the one thing they have listed as being not covered is.......VERMIN. I notified the management and they responded with a we will look into it. Does anyone else notice there are only 5 star reviews on their Big Bear Cabin website? Good thing we have other options on google & yelp to make a review!

Take pictures of the cabin when you arrive and when you leave. The condition of the cabin was OK and i had no major issues during my stay. My problems started two days after i got home. I received a request from the booking agent for $500! The message read: 'Thank you for taking care of the deck repair. Michelle' I responded immediately asking what had happened and that i was unaware of any issues while renting. I feel like this type of communication was rude and absolutely presumptuous that i caused the damage. You see, i went to Big Bear when everything was covered in snow. It had been covered for the last weeks from a previous snowfall, and the snow had not melted yet. When i arrived at my cabin, it was completely covered - including the deck. We were not able to use the deck for this reason. Obviously the rental company did not shovel the snow in between renters. There was no further response from her and she escalated the issue to the AirBnb team. There was no dialogue or attempt to speak with me regarding this, which I believe would have deescalated the situation because i attached a picture clearly showing that the deck was covered in snow/ice. It did not snow while we were there - this was obviously from previous snowfall. The damage pictures she sent looked like a burn marks on the deck. Those burn mark pictures were soaked in snow melt and ice. Obviously this could not have been done by me i my picture shows the deck covered in snow. Till today, after escalating the issue the rental company has not followed up with myself or AirBnb. It is unprofessional and unnecessary to work with your customers this way. This company turned my great vacation into anxiety when i came home. I would never rent with them again. My wife & I stayed at the Treehouse for six nights & it couldn't have been a more romantic trip. From two complimentary wine baskets to recommendations on the best places to eat & hike, we truly felt welcome & special. Vacation 2: Ringing in the New Year. After our honeymoon, we raved about this place so much we made all of our family jealous. Right after the new year, ten of us came up for another six nights of skiing & snowboarding. The wolves at the zoo would howl at night & there was never a dull moment. Vacation 3: I'm leaving for deployment soon (Navy) & we decided to bring us & our three little ones to our favorite getaway. Only two nights, but everything is perfect. Can't beat eggs & bacon in those cast iron skillets! As I have said before, this review has always strictly been about the experience of the lack of customer service from the property manager, NOT the condition of the cabin. POST FROM - The Treehouse on Aspen Facebook: The Treehouse on Aspen has been the victim of bullies. A group of renters who rented online for OCTOBER somehow, showed up in January. When shown the online reservation form, they insisted that they never stayed at the cabin in October. A call to the housekeeper determined that no one had come on the weekend they had reserved. Unfortunately, the Treehouse was already rented for the weekend they showed up for as it is a very popular rental. A sheriff was called to remove the disgruntled non-renters from the property and protect the current renters. A full refund was given to the non-renters even though under the terms of agreement that was not necessary. The owners also personally contacted the person who made the booking, hoping to ease the situation that could have been a simple mistake when they booked online. Instead, the person who booked the cabin refused to speak with the owners, and the friends have launched an online bullying campaign against the Treehouse. On Yelp,on Facebook, and on their personal pages they are attempting to ruin the reputation of a house they have never stayed in and the owners with whom they refused to talk to. It is a shame that some choose to use the power of the Internet to bully, harass, and otherwise defame innocent parties. We are currently investigating whether this can be pursued legally for slander as we do have their October reservation, and none for January. I do wish to thank all of those who have been our guests and enjoyed the Treehouse. I'm sorry that any of you have to be subjected to the immaturity, vindictiveness, and spite of an unfortunate group of people who have chosen to turn a mistake into a vendetta rather than work with the owners to resolve it. I have decided to put the Reviews back on for the benefit of those who actually stayed in our cabin, and hope that they do not become even more vulgar.
