However, today I passed by Tatch Hut and noticed they had a small entree special for $10. I was greeted warmly, and the truck looked clean, so I decided to give it a shot. I went with the jerk chicken and added sides of cabbage, plantains, and peas and rice. The total came to $15, which felt like a better deal than $20. The jerk chicken itself was flavorful and hit the spot. However, the sides didn't quite live up to expectations. They were just okay--not bad, but not great. I'm not sure if it was because they weren't served at the right temperature, but they didn't really impress me. I'd definitely give the jerk chicken another go, but I'd probably skip the sides next time.

Also, the breading stayed on the fish, which is always nice, rather than having chunks falling off. I was less jazzed about the sides. I took my first bite into the green beans and bit into something hard. Definitely not a green bean, and never figured out what it was. The mac and cheese had a weird mealy texture and slightly sour taste. Maybe that's what they were going for, but I"m not really a fan of that... Overall, really liked the fish (4 stars), but not so much the sides (2 stars). And waaaay to slow :(

(And as somebody from the Caribbean, I can tell you that we will fight people over empanadas same with any of the different variations from across Central South America and the Caribbean) the service is quick, but also careful and friendly and we've become so enamored of their food that we also constantly get delivery from them. I also love something that they make which they definitely put a Venezuelan twist on, but it's something I grew up with where I lived and that is a Patacon. This is essentially a a sandwich with a variety of different filling options, but instead of using bread, you use two deep fried mashed plantains or in simpler terms tostones. It's a really simple dish, but I find that simple dishes are often the hardest to execute correctly and this one hits home every time. Also their little sit down eating area is really cute and welcoming so if you're in the mood for good Latin food, but are not looking for something super spicy. This is a really great bite.

We shared a few items from their menu: Creole Shrimp Boat (sauteed shrimp, mussels, jumbo lump crab meat, and the fish of the day simmered in a fire roasted red bell pepper sauce, with Creole rice and the vegetable of the day); Hot Cat Stack (fried catfish stacked with sweet and savory Andouille sausage cornbread, spicy crawfish red pepper meunière, honey chive compound butter, hot honey, and the vegetable of the day); a half rack of ribs (slow roasted ribs, Louisiana dry rub seasoning, mopped in BBQ sauce, mashed potato, and the vegetable of the day); and a strawberry bread pudding. Everything was delicious. I liked every course we had, but the Hot Cat Stack was wow. I've had a lot of bad to blah bread puddings in my life, but Ethel's wasn't bad or blah. It was delicious - and not dry at all. At all. The service was friendly but not the fastest (we waited a while for dessert) and maybe just a little scattered! But we eventually got everything we ordered, and the meal overall was wonderful: delicious, fun, casual. I'd love to return!
