Love this place! They have really done a lovely job with the inside, great atmosphere and thoughtful touches all around. The food was excellent, as people have said the brussel sprouts are outstanding and great to share. The chow chow that goes on the sprouts are also delicious! I loved my chicken sandwich, and my Dad loved his beyond burger. Check their websites, they have some great weekly specials like whiskey Wednesday, cheap well drinks of Thursday's, open mike on Mondays. A great addition to a growing local food scene in Winston and a must stop for locals and those just visiting. read more

Earls was never a place I went thinking "I'll eat here!" I have been a few times just to enjoy music and the bar- and after eating I know why. The fish and chips came out and there were huge pieces of fish that had me all excited. Took a bite and 90% batter 10% fish. I cut open each piece to see if maybe it was just that one- nope.. hot chips sustained me for the night. My friend got the friend chicken sandwich after being told from our server that it was juicy and her favorite thing. No shock here- Dry and over battered. Tater tots sustained them. Maybe we hit a bad night .. but I won't be finding out by coming back to try again. read more

Idk, I can't find any food I enjoy here. Been 3 times. Advice, don't get the Hot Chicken... it's too much. Got a headache from the spices that obliterates the sandwich. Can't taste the food after your tongue has been cauterized. And if you eat outside, prepare to be forgotten about;no employees come outside to help. What a random, pleasant surprise! My husband and I were in Winston-Salem for the day and decided to hit one of their local breweries, wise man. It wasn't open yet and we were hungry, so we walked across the street to earls to have food. It is an order at the counter kind of place. The individual at the counter was very kind and helpful in choosing what to eat. You could tell he was passionate about working there and enjoyed the food himself. We ordered the deviled eggs, brussel sprouts, and their famous chicken sandwich with a side of collard greens to share. The chicken sandwich was out-of-this-world! I loved the spice on it and there was some dark meat, which made it very juicy. The collard greens were perfectly seasoned and delicious. I love the preparation of the brussel sprouts. Brussel sprouts are pretty common now, but I've never seen this preparation. They had parmesan and pickled onions on top of them. I also appreciated the size of the tray. It was so good. Deviled eggs were decent, but this was probably my least favorite dish. Nice portion size, but the filling of the eggs I wasn't as big of a fan of. If you find yourself needing a good meal and an excellent outdoor space to eat at, come here! read more

Had a great brunch with friends today. We had the Nacho Tots as well as the Pimento Cheese (very good). And I had the Chicken and Waffles - the BEST I've ever had! There's something about apple butter on a waffle! DIVINE! I also had a couple Man Mosas - very addicting. It wasn't that busy which was a plus - we like to get there early before a crowd and get done! Our server (I don't remember his name) wasn't very attentive, and seem to forget when we'd ask for things - that's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. I'm in hospitality management myself so I notice these kinds of things. In time he'll be fine though. This place is a MUST visit! We'll be back! read more

Horrible service, management and band. Went Thanksgiving weekend and regret every minute. We were wondering why no one was there.

COVID's wet dream! On the weekends there have been tons of people and hardly anyone cares to mask up. I question if they follow the mandates about closing time, as well. Food is lackluster. Nacho tots are the only thing I've been impressed by that I've tried. Drinks have been the more pleasant purchase. The bartender Conner is awesome! The pineapple cider was my favorite. Live music is what keeps me coming here, although it's a little hard to keep the schedule straight. I just wish people would keep personal space in mind, given the pandemic. read more

Visited after a long day of hiking at Hanging Rock State Park and the Early Bird Sandwich really hit the spot! My friend got the Buffalo Bird, which he also enjoyed. The interior of the restaurant is really nicely decorated and there's a decent amount of outdoor seating, as well. My only complaint is that the draft beer list is a little lacking, but they offered a decent variety of canned beers and mixed drinks to make up for it. read more

Visited Earl's for the first time and it did not disappoint! The restaurant and bar were busy, although we were able to be seated right away. It felt cozy and inviting. It was a little bit loud, making it hard to have a conversation with a bigger group. We ordered drinks and appetizers, both of which were good. As primarily vegetarians, there was a good selection of options. Some of the sides were great (especially the mac and cheese!). Our waitress was helpful and very nice. It's unfortunate that I have to leave this poor review!! This is the second time visiting. Great experience on first visit. Wait staff were wonderful and food fresh. Now this is where it gets disappointing. Came to Earls prior to going to a show at the ramkat on 2/18/2024. There were only 4 in our party and i had made reservations online. When we first walked in we waited behind another party so long for a hostess to greet us that I asked someone in the other party if we were suppose to seat ourself. After about 10 minutes we were seated at a table that was being cleaned off. However the waitress Karissma never did wipe the table. She left. 10-15 minutes later she came back to get our order. However I had to ask her if someone could wipe the table. She appeared overwhelmed. She left and returned with a cloth and cleaned the table. She took our food and drink order at 6:05pm. At approx 6:55 pm one from our group walked to bar and purchased beer for our table. Waitress never did bring us anything from bar. However she did bring waters. I went and found waitress and asked her if she had put our order in because we still haven't received the drinks or apps that we ordered from her. She rolled her eyes and said "yes". Nothing else no apology or reason for delay. I noticed her talking to a coworker and that worker immediately came to our table to see how she could help. She apologized and immediately brought initial drink order and the cheese sticks that were ordered. They were cold but we were hungry. Did not see Karissma anymore during our dinning. However a wonderful lady that was at the bar on her off day came to the rescue. I do wish I would have gotten her name she was very personable and on top of saving our evenings dinner plans. When food came waffle tater tots and shrimp and grits were cold. Just think this was a missed opportunity for great food. Server did replace tots with hot ones and took waffle off our tab. Karissma could probably serve Earls better if she was a hostess only. She just froze under stress and pressure. We never seen her again until she brought the bill. I did not tip her as she never did serve us. However I did tip the young lady cash that came over and helped on her day off from the bar. Please note that I am not writing this to keep anyone from going to enjoy a good cold beer and dinner. I am writing this in hopes no one else spends $100 to leave disappointed. Everything was super greasy and not in the good way, forgot a coke which costs 3 dollars for all Ice. Love that. Everything was super soggy and didn't seem like it was made fresh at all. Earl's lived up to my expectations!! It's a great place for food and drinks or just drinks. When we were there, there was live music inside. There were several things that looked great on the menu, but we had to try our the fried chicken based on the reviews. The hot was definitely hott and the buffalo was nice and mild. Tasty and plenty of food on the plate! For drinks I highly recommend the i fall to pieces w/ gin, mint, blackberries, and ginger beer. It's so refreshing the boys even love it!! Apparently the kitchen has their servers scared to death to ask for any changes/alterations to the menu. Our waitress said the kitchen would yell at her. I just asked to have the egg on my sandwich well done. Received my dinner and runny egg yolk all over the plate. They would not redo the sandwich. They charged us for the sandwich they took back uneaten. This is the second time we have tried Earl's. The first time the chicken on my sandwich was red/bloody. When I asked to have my chicken cooked I was old "this is how it comes." We gave them another try because we were told it's a new kitchen staff. I will not be giving Earl's another chance. read more

5 stars along the board, from staff, location, decor and of course food. This place is so cute. I'm obsessed with the decor and the ambience. They also have a huge outdoor area. We were greeted by the sweetest hostess and then taken care of by the best server. I ordered the Winston Hot which is a spicy fried chicken sandwich. It was hands down one of the most delicious friend chicken sandwiches I've had. I also had a side of Mac and cheese and that was also delicious. If you live in the area or if you're visiting the area you absolutely must stop by here. And if you don't live in the area well you should make a trip out of it. Ok, so rating this is difficult for me. 1st - the initial experience of seating and service was just not good. Party of 6 , behind a party of 2. Large ( sat 8 ) table right at the entrance open and waiting for some guests.. Server says, you'll have to wait for a table ?? Kinda confused, since we could have tripped over the open table in front of us.. then we got the drift of what was happening. Short staff, no one in charge.. we wait, we wait.. Finally we get seated at the exact table that's been open for 10 minutes.. go figure ?. The service didn't get better from there. Drink order SLOW, drinks SLOW. Oh yeah, and missing one of the drinks ordered, which never showed. 2nd - Menu options - Saturday Brunch - that's it, and I'm ok with small menu's but really, really limited. We make due , order the food . And we WAIT, and we WAIT. Finally viola, food arrives. well most of it.. My order, eggs benedict.. looks good. Bisquits, & nicely, really nicely poached eggs, fried chicken on the side. All looks good.. except, oh yeah.. NO sauce for the benedict? just dry biscuits and eggs.. missing something here? Ask server any sauce come with this .. NO is answer..really ? Track down a menu, hey, includes a Sauce.. not mine. Go to service area.. a quick, "we'll be right with you" from snarky server #1, oh yeah, all three servers, at one point or another, waited on us , kinda, sorta.. Said, " excuse me , but we've already been served and things not right.." need some sauce and how 'bout a refill on the drinks.. Ok, we get some service.. Yes, Yes, Yes..An absolute home run. This place in not a typical Winston-Salem restaurant. It is very obvious the owner(s) raised the bar in the local area what a resturant should be and I am so pleased to see it. From the decor to the service to the food this place nailed it. Upon arrival we were pleasantly greated on 28Dec19 and quickly sat. Our waitress was Alicia who was very pleasant and knew the menu. I went with her suggestions for the evening and was not disappointed. Let me first start with the decor. Simply stated, I loved it. It was a cross between NYC with a touch of Nashville and a dash of upscale dining. Kudos to whoever pulled this off. My favorites were the backward signage above the bar, the lighted trees inside and the rustic interior with high ceilings but there was so much more. The brussel sprout appetizer was out of this world with and explosion of flavor from every direction. A must try and for me, a must repeat. We then went for simple and ordered the wings and a chicken sandwich. Both were packed with flavor. The wings had their house run which offered a nice mix of heat and flavor. They are full wings and not just flats and drumettes. My wife ordered a chicken sandwhich buffalo style and loved it. Moist, flavorful and not drenched in sauces. All food came out FRESH and HOT. This place is a needed change of pace in Winston-Salem and I am alreadly.looking forward to returning. read more

A $14 burger or chicken sandwich is a covenant. That price tag is really prohibitive, and for those fortunate enough to be able to throw that kind of money at a single meal, it should be license to anticipate something really special. There was no offer of a choice of toppings, temperature for the burger, or other options. The simple toppings on the sandwiches were listed there, and we gave our orders with no bargaining for this addition or that omission. It's a leap of faith to just pony up and play along with whatever this was supposed to be, and any establishment worth its sand would deliver on that implied agreement. I wanted to believe. Trendy aluminum sheet-pan-style trays appeared with paper liners and the sandwiches quickly cooling. The chicken sandwiches were very crispy, and not just the batter. Small portions of chicken breast, pounded thin and overfried, made for not a bad sandwich, but barely a good one. How does one make a brined piece of meat so dry? The burger was....fine. An unseasoned patty cooked well done and thus relying on cheese and condiments for most of its moisture; not totally dried out but memorable only for its extreme void of specialness. To call the steamed half-chicken "barbecue" is a bit of a stretch in North Carolina, where it's generally understood that barbecue is a cooking technique, not a sauce. A small pile of flavorless collards and passable mac rounded out this meh dish. The tater tots were tasty and fried until crunchy, as they should be. However, it would take the sting off of the price tag to compensate for weak mains with generous sides. If there's one thing you do well, show some pride and do a lot of it. "Best restaurant and bar in Winston-Salem" is a bold assertion. I don't need to name any of the dozen or more better restaurants within a walk of this place. This was airport dining at best: the menu is overpriced by about 50%, and you pay because you're trapped there. I hadn't been to Earl's and had heard mixed reviews and rumors, but thriving through the pandemic could have meant this would be something great, or at least unique. I think it means there's enough capital behind this place or enough corners cut to keep it above water somehow. Booze prices are reasonable, but I was driving so I couldn't dull the pain when the bill arrived. Waitstaff were generally great, but customers pay those people, not the restaurant. Tipping folks properly in spite of a lackluster meal is a hill I will die on, so that brought the bill to over $100 for three beers, two teas, three sandwiches, and a wet chicken. Is there enough unaware tourist traffic in town to sustain this establishment or do they subsist by not paying bands? read more

The food here is delicious, and I love their menu. However, their service is severely lacking. Four of us were seated at a table last night, and we sat for almost 15 minutes before anyone came to our table (even then, I think a server only came over because my sister spoke to the hostess). This has happened here before. They need to keep more servers on staff, or at least make them care about their customers a bit more. read more

I was so excited to have girls night here. What started off as a wonderful meal ended terribly buy 1030 pm. The food was great loved the music. When getting out checks my friends food was on mine and my appetizer was on her ticket. No big deal I figured they were understaffed it would all come out in the wash. Waiter takes the checks and charges my card 18.18 and her cash app dings 63$ he mixed up our tickets. Again no big well ask him to fix it. When he comes back the the table he hands me a booklet with a red debit card. My friend tried to explain to him the money mix up and I explain these aren't our card. He proceeded to tell us we're crazy he didn't do that until another table comes over and says they got the wrong cards. At this point we switch cards and he walks away. No apology. So we go to the manager to get the tickets fixed. Again I think understaffed he was tired. I did not tell the manager anything other than the cards were charged wrong. 10 minutes later the waiter comes back. Told us he fixed the checks. I told him it was okay things happen to get some sleep when he gets off. I was just being nice. He proceeds to go into a rage dropping F bombs left and right about how he hates the F'n band that they have him all F'd up. This goes on for a couple of min. I look at my friend and we decided to go somewhere else. Before we left he brought the check back to the table next to us. With NO DEBIT CARD in the booklet. When he says this he told her that she must have dropped it. I seen this and said nothing fell. He just walks off. At this point I excuse myself and we leave I was just fed up at this point. By the next morning I also had food poisoning I'm assuming from the sausage in the queso tots as that is all that I ate. I WILLLLL not be going back to this place. I want to write a great review of this restaurant. Most of our experience WAS great. We got seated promptly, even on a busy Saturday night. There was live music playing, and it was really good. The decor was cool, down to the old cigarette vending machine repurposed as a vending machine for small pieces of art. Earl's has outdoor seating on a porch wrapped around the building; I would have loved to sit there on this pleasant fall evening, but there were no tables available and we were able to be seated immediately inside. Our servers were extremely attentive and wonderful (more on that below). My husband's meal was excellent. He ordered the Early Bird with a side of slaw, I tasted the slaw, and it was creamy and crunchy, with a great balance of flavors. The sandwich looked like it was straight out of an advertisement for the best chicken sandwich you ever had, and he said it tasted good as well. Now, I am going to rage about my salad. I ordered the beet salad with arugula, goat cheese, and pecans ($10), and ordered grilled chicken ($5) on top. I'm trying to watch my girlish figure here, and was delighted that Earl's had an offering that sounded both tasty and healthy. When our lovely server brought my salad, I just stared at it. I stared at it because I was trying to see it. I was trying to see it because it was very, very small. It looked like a side salad. It was in a small bowl, and it looked like it had been just flung in there, because about a third of the bowl was empty. It looked like maybe I had been brought someone else's unfinished salad. The server saw me staring and asked what was wrong. I mentioned that the salad was quite small. She said the salad was supposed to be on the small side. She asked if I wanted her to take it back to the kitchen. I should have said yes, but I was hungry, and my husband had his meal, and I wanted to eat. When I started to eat, I noticed that the chicken was both sparse and, while well-seasoned, very overcooked. There also weren't many beets. Another server stopped by the table to ask how our food was. I told her. She practically insisted on bringing me a side dish to help make up for the little, not-so-great salad. I asked for green beans which were hot and very flavorful. The server who had taken our order and brought our meal also brought our check and asked how things had been. I was honest with her and she offered to go and get our meal discounted, but I didn't think that was fair since I'd eaten the whole thing. She was genuinely apologetic, but it's not like it was her fault. Unless she ate part of my salad on the way out of the kitchen. Salads are cheap to make. For not much money, you can add some greens and make a ten dollar salad look like something that's worth ten dollars. (For that matter, beets are pretty cheap, too). And a restaurant whose menu is made up largely of chicken dishes ought to be able to cook a chicken breast without turning it into jerky. I'd go back to Earl's because of the great service and atmosphere, but not if I were trying to eat light. Just give in and get the sandwich. read more

Nothing special here but subpar bar restaurant wannabe. Good luck catching their "Supper" menu in the 1 to 2 hours they serve it. Bartenders are stressed out like any other bars facing crowds of people over the counter and they have no competence. Got the Winston hot chicken wings: I love hot and spicy wings but for me, it was way too hot in terms of painful kind and not the tasteful kind of hot. Few guys who ordered chicken sandwich didn't even bother finishing. -1 for subpar service of there is any, - 1 for lacking any finesse in their dishes, - 1 for crude sound system even though the live band was quite talented.
