After reading some of the negative reviews, I felt like I had to write my own. I discovered Earthfire on my first trip to Santa Fe about 8 years ago, and it has become the shop I most look forward to visiting when we are in town. On this last trip I went almost every day! There is so much so see and buy! The quality of the materials they sell are top notch, and they don't pressure you to buy anything. While some shoppers fine them inattentive, I find it refreshing that I can shop without being hounded to purchase. read more

I've visited this place every time we visit Santa Fe but I had never checked the reviews. I just happen to this time for some reason and was shocked at all the comments about the rudeness. Granted we usually just come into browse but then again I don't think we were ever greeted either. When I came last year there was a young girl... training?... and she was nice but I do recall a lady being quite abrupt with her when she was trying to help me with a purchase. This week I went in and it will be my last. When showing me an item my father in law asked her a reasonable question and instead of saying "I'm not sure" snapped at him. This is easily the most unprofessional and disrespectful store owner I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. As a supplier, and buyer, of high-end jewelry and rare diamonds (We have had several lots auctioned in Sotheby's and various reputable houses) I encounter unpleasant individuals from time to time, but Tom Forrest has been the most unsavory. I had recently returned to LA from a business trip in Russia and Southern Africa where I had made acquired some high value stones and pieces (all GIA certified after my return), as well as some lesser value items. On my way to NYC to deliver some stones to a client, I made a stop in Santa Fe and, subsequently, this little store. I have little experience dealing with mineral specimens and I was looking to evaluate the worth of a few small items that I had no use for so, and they seemed like the type of establishment that dealt with items of this sort. So I inquired within. The lady that spoke with me initially, was quite nice and friendly. She informed me that Tom did all the purchasing and he would have a look at what I brought in. Tom began looking at the items I had brought in and told me that he usually prefers very large specimens and that smaller specimens do not sell quickly. I had no qualms with that information. He asked me how much I wanted for them, I reported that I did not know the value, so I am open to whatever would be deemed reasonable IF he were interested in them. He then, unprovoked, proceeded to smugly and derisively insult me and the stones I had presented. Describing them as "ugly", "terrible", and "worthless". In my buying experience, if I am not interested in an item for sale, I kindly let the seller know that I am not interested. But, he asked me what I had paid for them, I told him "basically nothing" and he mockingly retorted "and that is all you will get for them" and laughed in my face. I stifled my urge to exchange foul words with him, as that is not the way I conduct business. In my silence, the man continued to berate and disparage me until I spoke up and told him that I typically deal with diamonds & rare stones, not mineral specimens. That peaked his interest and he asked me if I had any with me. I did, but at that point he had entirely discredited himself and I had no desire to do any type of business with him. On my way out he offered his business card, but I declined. I have a very thick skin, but I would NEVER refer Earthfire Gems Gallery to anyone after my experience. I suggest you steer clear and choose one of the other gem stores in town. read more

This place was recommended to me by the sales rep at Golden Eye but I'm wondering if that was such a good idea. Although when I first walked in, I was excited by the large array of beads and stones, but up close, everything was a dusty, labels were stained, the beads were just old-school. After 5 mins of looking around, I felt completely underwhelmed. I tried very hard to find something to take home but the owner was only half-attentive and didn't really care if I was there or not. :( If It wasn't for the fact that being a small business owner is tough, I'd have given this store 1 star for some of the nice cabs she has. But don't go there if you want service or any drilled beads. read more

The women working there was kind and respectful. However the male owner does the buying and was extremely disrespectful and rude. He referred to our mineral specimens and gemstones as "worthless" and "ugly". My boyfriend has had several gemologists express interest in our finds- so we were just wanting to show them around and get opinions. I am a native Santa Fean and have had my share of rude businesses encounters over the years, but this place takes the cake for RUDE! The manager, older lady with glasses, is snobbish, pretentious, and passive agressive. After her young assistant showed me several nice opals, the manager stepped in, looked at me, and told me I wasn't a "buyer." I would have been today, or at some point, but I was so turned off by her vibe that I told her and left. She's the kind of woman who is miserable and enjoys spreading her joyless life to her customers. read more

Lots of great stuff to look at. The staff/owners are always 50/50 when it comes to helpfulness. They can be pretty helpful at times but in general seem fairly disinterested in making a sale. I've previously been met with outright rudeness, but this latest visit was a vast improvement. I did find a few great stones this trip, so that's a bonus. They are a bit over priced on some stuff, but such is the nature of any shop in the Plaza in Santa Fe. read more

Took me a while to adjust to the store. At first everything looked busy and like it had been there for a long time. Once I started to see through some of the clutter I noticed some true world class fossil and mineral specimens. This is the closest to and old fashioned rock and mineral shop from my earlier years, a nice departure from the overpriced mineral galleries that can be found in most of the tourist towns. It is worth the stop even just to look around at some of the wall size fossils. This is also a great stop for jewelers too, as they have a top notch selection of loose stones and cabs. read more

I have gone to Santa Fe for the last 10 years, once or twice a year. I stumbled upon this shop 3 years ago. I met Ms. Paula Davis who also designs and makes custom jewelry pieces. I showed her a pair of solid silver one piece cufflinks that I had purchased elsewhere in Santa Fe. I asked her if she would be willing to make a few pairs of silver one piece cufflinks for me. she agreed. The cufflinks came out beautiful! Just as I had wanted. And at a reasonable per pair of cufflinks. I would heartily recommend Paula Davis for those who might want custom made cufflinks or another piece of jewelry. Many, many thanks Paula! I was astounded at the rudeness of the sales clerk. We were looking for a polished turquoise stone to set in a ring we had and we asked if we could look at those stones. She acted as if she didn't want to assist us, even though there were no other customers in the store. She pulled the first small case and I selected a stone. I explained that this was my husband's ring and asked if I could text him a photo of the stones after I had narrowed it down to three or four so he could make the final selection. She said that they did not allow that. Her entire demeanor in answering our questions was rude and gave the impression that we were bothering her. I asked to see a second case and she basically told me that I couldn't afford those (I had not given her a budget at all). She pulled a less expensive case and I called my husband to try to describe the stones. She actually said in a very exasperated tone, "We are going to be here all day". Unbelievable! read more
