This place is so good I'm willing to drive up from Round Rock just to shop here. They have an all star selection of craft beer and I love that I can find things no one else in Austin has. They are also super friendly and great about posting what good, new beer they get which occurs regularly. I've heard they have great ice cream selection too but so far, I've only tried milk but that came from local farmers which is cool. They also have a cool mosaic and a local food truck out front that are both worth checking out. read more

Those who know me well & have read my previous reviews know that I'm all about the craftbeer scene in ATX. I have a few choice spots whenever I'm searching for unique beers & East 1st Grocery is the latest one added to my list. Located on East Cesar Chavez at the edge of the hipster-infested "east side", East 1st Grocery looks like your average conveinence store/gas station. Aside from an awesome beer selection, they also carry other local products & certain provisions that keep you from possibly going to the grocery store. Reminds me alot of Live Oak Market, my other local beer store. Did not talk to any of the staff during my visit so my review (and rating) could change in the future but for now this place is great IMO. read more

I'm new to Austin from the northeast and damn, am I glad I bumped into this place. This surprising little gem in East Austin is easily one of the best beer stores I've visited in the country. It may have an overall smaller selection than stores such as Spec's or Total Wine, but the size of the selection is comparable, and we are talking quality over quantity here: stand outs include unique selections from Pairie Artisan Ales, Cigar City Brewing, and possibly the widest offering from Bruery Terreux that I've seen outside of their Anaheim, CA brewery. If you're looking for new beer recommendations, talk to Sam; he's friendly and a great source! The prices are fair; not insanely marked up like other beer hotspots of similar quality. If you're a beer fanatic like myself and haven't been here, then I highly recommend you swing by and support this outstanding local business. Gas station on the outside, pretty good groceries inside. On the search for beer and wine in this 'hood, East 1st Grocery popped up in a Yelp app search. Didn't look too promising, but why not give 'er a try? SO much beer. Wine selection ain't too shabby either. I attempted to do some pairings with Cheetos, Pringles and white cheddar popcorn. It wasn't the classiest meal ever, but after a day in the sunshine this was a lovely pre-dinner amuse bouche. Prices are what you'd expect at a convenience store. I ended up spending $75 on enough munchies to feed 10 people. And I'd probably do it again if necessary. read more

The good: This place has an excellent beer selection as well as specialty snacks. The bad: I've been here twice. The first time they rang up a 9.99 6-pack as 12.99 I caught it and they fixed it. Last night I was in a hurry grabbed ginger beer ($8.99), milk and a chocolate bar. I paid not thinking and only after realized I paid $24+... That means the milk was $10/gallon and the chocolate bar was $4... Or more likely, as happened on the first visit, they overcharged me. The best specialty beer selection on the East Side outside of some places specifically for that purpose. They try out new beers almost weekly. They have a great wine selection also, though not as great as their beer selection. Always friendly and open to suggestion... I've asked for a certain beer before and they wrote down the name to try to get it in stock. Propane tank exchange - just discovered this. I grill a lot and live close by, live saver. One of my favorite little discoveries on the East Side. Right across from Weather Up, one of my favorite cocktail bars. read more

By far my favorite bottle shop in town. Sohail has an excellent selection of craft beers and is one of the friendliest proprietors in town. I not only enjoy stopping in and perusing the selection, but I also enjoy stopping in just to chat. Sohail takes great care of his customers, has fair prices, and has a better selection than most any other place in town. Perfect solution to a warm sunny day of waiting in line at la barbecue. I walked in looking for something Cold, carbonated, local, and hoppy and walked out with a super satisfying pick-your-own sixer. Staff was excited to see us have the afternoon to enjoy the local treats - highly recommend stopping here for hydration libations before visiting la barbecue on the next block. read more

Great experience on the way out of Town from my trip to Austin.....I love how unique and authentic the store is. The owner humbly spoke to me about beer, asked questions, gave suggestions based on the answers and pointed me in the direction I wanted. This is a hidden gem on the east side. From the outside you would never guess that inside is one of the best selections of craft beer around. On top of that the prices are fair unlike some other store that gouge away. The guys that work there are very nice. If I lived int he neighborhood I would be there multiple times a week. Who knew that a small gas station down on East Cesar Chavez would have one of the best craft beer selections in town? If you keep up with the Austin beer scene, maybe you already knew that, but in case not, get over to East 1st Grocery immediately! Upon wandering into e1 Grocery one day after a tough workout, I was astonished to see the selection of craft beer offered at this unassuming bottle shop. Since then, this store has been one of my most valued resources for finding the latest craft beer releases in Austin. Behind the counter, Sam gets his hands on all of the hottest beer releases, and he also maintains a large selection of the best everyday beers that are sold in Austin. It is obvious that the beers offered here are carefully curated, and if you keep up with E1 Grocery on Twitter, you will no doubt be made aware of the newest and best beers on (at least) a weekly basis! The prices here are great, and if you're lucky, you might find a hidden gem of a beer tucked away on the shelf randomly one day. In addition to the great craft beer selection, E1 Grocery makes a point to be an early and primary supporter of local businesses like Cuvée Coffee, Coffer (and their carbonated cold brew coffee bottles), and other local food and drink vendors. Seeing a small store like this also supporting other local businesses, as well as being a reliable source for the best beers in town, means that I will continue to spread the word about East 1st Grocery and what they are doing. AAAAAND, you can pick up a few beers and go across the street to get awesome BBQ at Kerlin BBQ (BYOB!) or tacos from Veracruz All Natural! I LOVE E1 Grocery! They have the absolute best selection of craft beer and are SO nice. The owners always make it a point to ask "How are you, my friend?" and it makes me feel like their most valued customer. One of the best beer shops around town. One of the very few small bottle shops that doesn't mark up their prices just because they're on the east side or because all of their neighboring stores do. They seems to really care about the craft beer scene in austin and have even been known to go to a different city to cart back beer that doesn't get distributed here. They don't have to do it, they're just generous like that. Plus the selection is crazy good. You can find some aged stouts on the shelf as well as a great fresh beer selection. More than a few times I've found myself making the trek from round rock because they're the only ones in town with something I'm looking for. He sold bad beer to us and refused to refund or make sure that he exchanged good beer for the bad. I would recommend NEVER going here. Bought the last milk from here around 8 pm. One of the milk was clumpy so I returned both 1/2 gallon back. The cashier opened the one I didn't to check it. He told me it looked fine and I told Hume I didn't want it. I got the money back for it, then left to get milk at another place. When I passed by the store again I saw they put the full milk he opened to check back on the self to sell. read more

I wandered over here while waiting on an incredibly long line at the La Barbecue food truck cater-corner from here. What a great place for buying beer (E. 1st Grocery, not La bbq)! Huge selection, very pleasant, knowledgable, and helpful cashier. Never in this area, but if I was in E. Austin and looking for craft beer or any interesting beer, I'd be here daily! read more
