A search for the right pair of binoculars is difficult to do in the East Bay. Inventory as well as product knowledge are limited. Or at least that has been my recent experience which included East Bay Nature. This was my third store this week. My visit yesterday left me frustrated due to both limited selection in an 8X32 and minimal product knowledge on the part of the woman working that day. She was not able to tell me anything beyond what was printed on box and was not able to recommend what might work best for someone wearing glasses, with a bit of hand tremor, using for occasional kayaking, and frequent birding hikes. She acted as though my questions were a real bother. Could she order other options or point me in other directions? REI in Dublin was mentioned as well as a coworker not working that day. It was a bit painstaking to try out or compare the selection available as they were crammed into a tall glass case, and she insisted on only taking one out at a time. Each one was slowly unpacked, and then diligently packed up, before moving onto another. If you care to travel, my experience at Out of This World shop in Mendocino was drastically different and included an amazing product knowledge, an interest in ensuring I get the best binocular for my usage, (as evidenced by polite probing as to my usage) as well as a diverse selection of binoculars. read more

I'm a serious backyard birder. I've gone on guided tours just to see birds, participate in bird counts, my garden is landscaped to attract birds, I have multiple types of feeders and 5 birdbaths. One of my birdbaths is an old fashioned concrete birdbath bought at a hardware garden center and it attracts midsize birds. It has unique characteristics. It's deep in the center and certain bird species will only use this style bath. Over the years the bowl has cracked and separated. We tried to seal it which worked for a couple of years but now it's leaking badly. East Bay Nature was able to find a new bowl for this particular birdbath!!!!!!!!! I sent them photos of the bowl, the pedestal, the surroundings and they found an exact match. They went above and beyond to help me. Searched around to find a replacement bowl for me which took lots of time and effort. They texted me evenings when the store was closed. They knew how much I wanted this and they delivered! Birders.......... Please shop here. Don't go anywhere else! The store may be smaller than it's competitor up the road but it's chock full of great, too notch bird supplies. It's worth the trip just to see their merchandise. We also believe their seed supply is the best in the East Bay! Thanks East Bay Nature. I had no idea you could help me this way. Thanks to Liede-Maria H, I found another store that's for the birds. They have good selection of bird houses, and seed, to help me make my backyard a place for birdies. My goal is for them to fly in and stop in for a meal and a drink of fresh water. I want these birds to perch where I can photograph them and enjoy their feeding habits. I thought I had the perfect addition to what I hope is a bird paradise, a suet feeder. I still like the feeder, but the birds are not crazy about it. Now, I need a hummingbird feeder. This store is a bit out of my normal travels around Contra Costa County. When I am in Walnut Creek I will stop again, the prices are reasonable and the people working in the store are helpful. For now, I am buying seed in large bags. I want a lot of birds to visit me. Maybe in the summer I can cut back and the birds can eat the bugs on my roses. I don't spray them so there should be a lot of tasty flying bugs to attract birdies! read more

Walking into this store you are assailed with the smell of something unusual. Almost a nut, tree, peanut butter, dust smell. It is a truly distinct smell. This is one of my mom's favourite places to go. They have these funny t-shirts that she loves to get for x-mas and for my best friend's birthday last year I got him a crab clip paper holder from here he adored. They have beautiful pins, fountains, magnets, figurines and books. Their staff is sometimes really nice, helpful and friendly and other times they seem lost, don't know information about items in their store or spend ten minutes in the back looking for the item you want. All in all though a wonderful, nose and eye pleasing store. read more

Went to East Bay Nature this morning to buy seed and noticed that they are selling local honey again...Great! Was told that it came from a local beekeeper in Walnut Creek. Ah, Chris H. sounds a little insecure. I've been going to this place for over 10 years. I like it that I don't have people crawling over me when I walk into a store. Maybe you need more attention. This is the best source in the area for access to birding, seed and information about the surrounding wildlife. Not to mention access to the Lindsay Museum. The seed selection is unbelievable. It's amazing what birds you can attract with the different kinds of seed and feeders. Not just birds but bats, squirrels (or squirrel deterrents for your feeder), hummingbirds. The custom seed mixes for our area are very cool. I get 25lb bags. read more

I've been coming to Joanie's store since it opened. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and a great selection of wildbird seeds and food for all of your wild critters. Ask my wild birds, they demand only the best and the best comes from East Bay Nature. She also has a great selection of gifts, fountains and all kinds of neat, unique and fun stuff for your garden. I bought a Kestral box from her store and it took a couple of years, but I had a family of Kestrals move in and used it for several years before some rowdy Bandtailed pigeons created such a raucous that the Kestral moved on. I'm hoping the Kestrals will come back. I have several bird baths that I purchased from East Bay Nature . Water attracts both seed and non seed eating birds and that is a great way to watch birds if you don't want to use seeds to attract wildbirds. I also noticed that she carries food for your pet birds. If you own parrots, canaries, parakeets or cockatiels check out her selection. I could write more, but won't. I will just say, go check on the store in person and have fun! Oh one more thing. I don't often write 5-star reviews, but there is no other rating I would give this little gem of a store. It was well-stocked with many different kinds of bird seed, fountains and feeders. There are also many lovely garden items for your yard here. I was greeted as I came in and the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. I was however, distracted by what was at the front of the store. There were so many great gift items that I couldn't pass up on. (oh, and my holiday shopping is half done now.) I will most certainly be back before winter comes. I'll need to stock up on supplies to make suet and seed balls for the wild birds in my backyard. read more
