I managed to pick up my dog's kibble, but the kind I get they usually only order 3 and not 4 (in all stores) so I can never get the buy 3 get the 4th free promotion. The cashier lady reminded me of the promo but I told her the stores usually never stock 4 for me to grab. She said she would make note and look into it which I thought was sweet. I'm basing this on the quick run in, run out I did yesterday. So as I walked in, I noticed it was clean and did not smelled clean! That is a huge plus. You know what I'm talking about, we've all walked into a pet store and was like, yep, there's that wet, pet smelling scent we don't want in our house. HA! But not here, it was clean, there was nothing laying on the floor, the aisles were cleaned, workers were busy stalking shelves or helping customers. I needed to pickup worms for my bearded dragon and let me tell you, the area of these little guys were clean. They have them stacked nicely, dates are on their containers, cause you know, I can't be feeding my dragon old stale worms and such. Hahaha Their selection was also great, many different types to choose from. I typically order through mail service but with the heat wave we recently had, well let's just say it wasn't good. I'm glad that I can now walk here on my lunch break and know I can pick these up. Also, the young individual at the register,(roughly 12:30ish on 9/13) they were a little shorter than the other two standing there, they had long black hair, they were very nice and had a friendly conversation with me while the other person tried to print my receipt. Lol So, an 'Atta "person" should be given to them (don't wanna make assumptions on pronouns). I'll be back again to get their name hopefully. read more

I am a dog trainer and I run puppy classes at this location on Monday nights ("Pup 1" through Bravo!Pup). As I arrived to set up class last night, I was struck (not for the first time) by how great the staff is here. **They are always helpful, pleasant and engaging. I enjoy and look forward to our brief interactions. **The floor of the training room is clean and disinfected prior to my arrival. **They always get me more disinfectant to spray on my shoe-mat, even when it means they have to walk all the way back to the Employee's Only area of the store. **If I have any other needs, they are quick to respond which helps me ensure I'm ready before the puppies arrive! This site needs to work on their communication skills. It is hard enough to get Mr. Jenbert to a pet adoption event, so when we read on their website that there would be an adoption event on a Saturday, I was just happy that he was interested in attending. We drove over there only to find out from a big sign inside that it would be on Sunday instead. Fast forward to Sunday and the sign still said in big letters that there was a pet adoption event. Where were the animals?? I talked to an employee who said that the event had been cancelled. Thanks for the info, would've been nice to have the words CANCELLED both online and on the indoor sign the day before the event. Also, having the correct date to begin with on their website helps. To add insult, this place has plenty of merchandise devoted to cats and dogs, but no section for birds, reptiles, fish, and other unique but still commonplace pets. Furthermore, the parking lot that this place shares with Trader Joe's is tiny and cramped. I'll skip this place and try a different Pet Food Express location next time. read more

I wanted to get good quality raw dog food for my puppy from here, and I have to say the girl who helped me a few weeks ago (I wish I got her name) was so nice, knowledgeable and helpful. It was my first time in there to get dog food and I know she's helped so many others, but she helped me like I was her first customer - so patient and educated me about the differences in the many brands they carry. I also needed to get goat milk and bone broth which she helped me with and again, very pleasant and offered great information. I've had to come another time days after to get a dog tag made and a guy helped me. Again, he was wonderful and so pleasant. This store location rocks! Thank you for your hard work and effort. I'm in absolute awe of the vetrinary staff at this Pet Food Express. Let me start by saying that I usually never write Yelp reviews, but feel compelled to share my experience, for which I'd give more than 5 stars, if possible. I took my 13yr old Maine Coon (Nala) in for the full Senior Package (which includes a physical, as well as blood, urine, and fecal labs). We normally go to a different vet, but they charge a lot more and we didn't have the best experience last time, so we decided to give this place a real try. Nala is a pampered and spoiled little princess, who runs her household, so she was shocked and incredibly displeased that we dared drag her from her throne. She was also pretty scared, and as soon as the staff called us in, they noticed this and immediately closed the glass divider in order to give her some peace from the barking dogs in the waiting area. They quickly got to work examining her with such tenderness and gently cooing/petting her into ease. She snuggled up against the (I believe) assistants chest, who's name I unfortunately didn't get, but she was so great. Nala does not like strangers, but she sensed a safe person and found comfort in her arms. The vetrinarian, Mellanie Ellis, was nothing short of amazing. She was knowledgeable, gave us a play-by-play of everything they were doing, shared lots of great information, told us to contact her with any future questions/concerns, and made us feel extremely important and safe in her care. You can tell that everyone working at this Pet Wellness Center truly enjoys their job, loves animals, and will care for your furbaby as if it's their own. Also, everybody kept talking about how gorgeous Nala is, which I'm sure she appreciated. Hands down the best vetrinary experience of my life, and we were happy to hear that Nala is in great health after receiving test results emailed directly from Dr. Melanie Ellis the very next day. This is the only place I will be taking my cats moving forward, and recommend it to everyone. read more

I had a simply amazingly smooth adoption experience with them on Sunday afternoon thanks to Daniel (oh gosh or was it Nathaniel and his team.) My boyfriend and I had gone in to buy food for our cat on Saturday and fell in love with one of their kittens up for adoption that are being featured in partnership with the Contra Costa Animal Shelter. After going home to think about it some more and feeling good about our decision, we came back on Sunday and found she was still available for adoption! The staff let us play with her and explained to us very clearly what the adoption process was and walked us through the paperwork. For $127 we were able to have to take our beautiful little kitten home that same day, spayed and micro-chipped. We also got a 20% off coupon for her supplies that we used on the spot as well as a list of vets in the area that provide a free kitten wellness exam within 72 hours of the adoption. It's cash only for the adoption if you are getting a kittie through the shelter and it goes all to them. The staff was amazing-they walked us around the store to show us what kibble she's been eating and what litter they use, so that we could integrate her smoothly in to our home. They also made sure we were aware of her shy personality around other cats. I love the fact that this is a smaller privately owned chain and their prices on the food we get as well as litter and supplies are competitive with other chains. You can tell their staff loves animals-it cleary shines through and I am big fan of their promotion of adopting shelter pets. We were so thrilled we got to take our beautiful little girl the same day and how knowledgeable they were about the process. The questions they asked prior to the adoption showed they were truly invested in what kind of home the kitten went to and I'd highly recommend checking out their cats and kittens if you are looking for one. P.S. Right now there is a sweet little cat named Minnie, who seemed to be about 8 months old. She had the prettiest little face and needs a home too! This is a review for an older encounter (six months old, to be precise). I hadn't considered writing about it, but decided to in case others have experienced similar occurrences. I will preface by saying I love Pet Food Express-- I've never had a poor interaction with any employee at ANY location thus far. The pickings for rabbits are sparse, but come in handy when you need the basics. However, I should warn any rabbit owners not to allow themselves to be talked into purchasing CBD oil. We were on the hunt for Rescue Remedy for our rabbit menace-- he does not do well with vet visits. An employee steps up to help us (this is much appreciated), but immediately launches into a sales pitch about CBD, how it comes highly recommended by other pet owners, and even a comment that their in-house vet (no idea who) swears by CBD for rabbits. I am a fan of CBD for people, but it is still largely untested and not approved by many vets for pet use, as I came to find out after our incident. Our poor guy ended up going into cardiac arrest (he is alive and well, and I am so thankful) during his scheduled neuter surgery, and while bunnies are extremely fragile and it could have been anything that truly caused the complication, both our regular vet and the emergency vet we worked with are suspicious that CBD had something to do with it. I would implore the stores not to push this stuff until we have more research-- we were desperate and impressionable, and I imagine not the only ones. read more

I'm so happy that this local chain takes pet ownership seriously. - Most things in the store are "Buy 3, get the 4th FREE" (toys, food, treats, washes, etc.) - Apparently, the company takes training very seriously. I was told by an employee that they are rigorously trained on all products, which explains why the level of knowledge is consistent across every store I've ever visited - The quality of their selection is excellent. When we rescued our pup, she was on some inexpensive, but still decent kibble. We were able to gradually upgrade her to the high-end kibble, then a mix of kibble and high-end canned food, then finally the reconstituted/dehydrated dog food (which she absolutely loves). - Not every location does adoption events, but several do. That's where we found our fur baby and we couldn't be happier. It was really nice to know they took the lead on helping folks adopt instead of shop, even before CA changed the recent law. I may go to other pet shops for a wider selection of harnesses or beds, but PFE will always be my go-to for the real necessities for our pup. read more

It's located at the far right rear of the store. Notably, there were plenty of crates. From different sizes and purposes, they had it. Was looking for some disposables on Thanksgiving morning, and found the stores sliding doors open and the OPEN sign illuminated. Upon walking in found 2 young ladies in a discussion and didn't want to interrupt. When one of them noticed me, she didn't acknowledge my presence, just forcibly stated "we're closed today." I started to leave and then remembered the lighted open sign, and brought it to her attention. Her response was a curt "we have no control over that. Love the self pet wash station here! It's $15 per wash and if you buy 3, you get the 4th for free. You need tokens to start the wash so pay first for your tokens. The wash comes with a rubber collar if needed, shampoo, towels and dryer. They do not have the scrubbers. Luckily, I brought my own, but you can purchase one there if you want. The process: You can select between 3 shampoos which comes out as soapy water. Then when you're ready you can switch to rinse which is just water. Lastly, there are towels for you and a doggie blow dryer. Super efficient system! The store itself is huge. I didn't fully explore, but would say there is a good variety of pet products. I believe they also have a lot of fresh food as there were 2 large refrigerator sections. Highly recommend as a pet wash place! The staff were also very friendly and helpful. read more

(First, I popped into Trader Joe's for some human food : ) I walked in and was greeted by three sales associates, one of whom walked me over to their small animal food. They were not at all bothered that I had interrupted their discussion -- which can happen at some retailers. Points! These guinea pigs and this hamster prefer the Tiny Friends Farm Hazel Hamster Tasty Mix made in the UK. It was $8 for a small bag. However, the sales associate assured me that their prices were lower than Petco, which is located diagonally across the street. I thought that I'd price check it myself, and hopped across the street. The same Tiny Friends Farm Hazel Hamster Tasty Mix at Petco? $10 for a small bag! So the sales associate at Pet Food Express was forthright! More points! I went back across the street and purchased this tasty food for the little pets. The employees didn't mind the back-and-forth at all, and even told me that they price match brick-and-mortar stores, as long as you snap a photo and show it to them in store. Bonus points! Which brings me to the happy guinea pigs and hamster. They stopped their squealing and started their noshing the moment those seeds dropped into their bowls. Not my usual pet food express location, but since it was Sunday and my usual PFE closed at 6 and I wouldn't have made it in time from work, this was the next best option for my dogs specific type of dog food. The store wasn't busy at all, stopped in around 545pm, was greeted by the front register cashier, and proceeded to get my usual three bags of Acana dog food. Another lady (who looked like the only other employee in the floor) in the back aisles was helping a family so she didn't have time to really acknowledge my presence... I did have a question but I was in a hurry anyway - she did seem very helpful and knowledgeable from what I overheard while walking by her and searching for a small treat for my pup. I hopped in line and the cashier asked how often I rotate the flavors of dog food since I was buying three different ones. I couldn't tell if he wanted to give me a stern lecture on what to feed my dog, or if he was just trying to make "cashier small talk." It felt a little awkward and standoffish so I quickly said thank you, grabbed my stuff, and scurried out. Nothing outstanding about this location, but I will say the one employee who I witnessed helping other customers seemed to know what she w talking about when it comes to animals, the store was very clean, and the shelves looked neatly faced and stocked. I went to Yelp just to write a 5-star review of the awesome VIP Vet service in the back of Pet Food Express, but the whole store is 5-star. Product knowledge is fantastic. Service great. Great location. And PFE has a big dog training area AND a glass enclosed pet "waiting area" (I used the waiting area both times), 2 things I have never seen before in any pet store. I used VIP Vet twice last week, for rescue dogs for our local Husky rescue group. They were great both times. Professional but very sensitive to the dogs, too. On the 2nd visit, it was a little tricky getting the injections, and Carissa did an unbelievable job of restraining the Husky, without too much force, but got the job done. And there were actually 3 vet techs total doing the service! I was very impressed! read more

We always go to this location and the staff are so good with the animals. It's pretty typical for my dog who is a lover to try to go back into the store when we leave because he wants to play with the staff. Today we had a big oops fiasco and the staff went so above and beyond it made me super thankful that this is the place we go for all our pet needs. My french bulldog as usual ran in to greet the staff and being the little tough guy he is, managed to break one of his toenails - it didn't pop off but went completely sideways and squirted blood everywhere. Embarrassingly, I started to get both faint and nauseated from the sight of the blood (he is also my first dog so for me it felt a lot more serious of an injury than it was). I am so so thankful for the staff that were there this Tuesday evening (I believe Jesse and McKensie were two of the staff's names) but pretty much all hands on deck helped to try and both stop the bleeding and reassure me that he would be okay, another staff member helped with the shopping and brought towels. I sincerely couldn't be thankful enough. (And if any of you see this THANK YOU!!) That being said, I think there were some reviews about the prices that I was hoping to address. PetFood Express has really great quality food, and their stock is usually fresh. My frenchie has severe food allergies, where he gets patches all over his body of missing hair. It took over 100 different foods before we found a kibble that didn't cause a reaction with him, a Canadian brand called FirstMate. Canadian brands tend to have higher quality pet food than US and other countries. PetFood Express is one of the only brands to carry them and also has single ingredient white fish (no salmon) and sweet potato treats (among others) that he can eat without an allergic reaction. They always have buy 3 get one free for both food and the treats, and that even includes when the items are on sale. I definitely will pay slightly extra for better quality food than pay a lot more for the frequent vet visits to the vet. I've tried before to stray to other chains but they simply do not have the same quality or brands of food that do not cause a reaction with my dog's allergies. Also, my dog happens to be in love with this staff, so there's that :) read more

Also, there are no signs but most items in the store are buy 3, get 1 free. By buying 4 of every item, Pet Food Express winds up being cheaper than anyone else and it' close and really convenient. It was the most helpful service I've had since I moved to NorthCal. One of the employee was super helpful and understand our concerns about our pets. My cat started to vomit the foods after he puke the little bit of hairball. It has been 4days that he didn't properly eat because every time he eats the boiled chicken he puked 1hr later. Couldn't find the reason and couldn't decide the veterinary due to current event (covid 19). The employee recommended Digestive Enzyme. It worked right after I feed him that with the boiled chicken. I know that they are not veterinarian but it saved my cat. He also knew the difference between Enzyme, Probiotic, anti biotic and where to use it. read more
