Stayed at site 33 for 2 nights. Loved this site! Although it's a parking-lot type campground, this site didn't feel like we were in a parking lot. Lots of space in the woods to set up camp with plenty of shade. Easy to park a trailer. Close to water, trash and bathrooms. Beautiful walks to the other lakes and waterfall. Close to bike paths. Although the campground was close to roads, didn't hear a lot of traffic noise. Heavy bear activity. Our host LaDonna was very sweet and friendly, and kept bathrooms very clean. I've caught many fish in prior years, including some very nice 3+ pounders.. Unfortunately the last two years, we've been getting skunked... However, even if we go home empty handed, The scenery is worth the drive and cost of a fishing license. Today, arrived later mid afternoon, and of course it's a windy day! Lake Mary is my absolute favorite campground! Our group camped here for 3 nights last June. Our site was on the lake side and the view of the lake from our site was absolutely stunning!! The camp host was very sweet and our neighbors were all nice and friendly. It was quite windy on our first 2 days/nights but the wind calmed down on the 3rd day. I slept like a rock but some others in the group had a hard time sleeping with the sound of wind, so if you're tent camping, you might want to keep that in mind. I brought my paddle board but it was too windy to paddle out the first 2 days we were there.. But the condition on the 3rd day was perfect! We were there mid-June and the temps dipped down to low 40's at night/early morning, so pack some warm clothes if you're camping in the early summer (the weather at this high altitude campground is very unpredictable and can change quickly). But it does get very warm during the day!! We are returning for another trip this summer and cannot wait!! read more

Just another gorgeous part of Mammoth Lakes! We came here for kayaking. They rent kayaks (single and tandem) pontoon boats and paddle boards. Call ahead to reserve if you are going on a holiday weekend. We lucked out. There is also limited parking if you aren't actually camping. The lake is FREEZING. How do I know, well I fell in. Tipped that kayak right over 1 minute after getting in. So, if you plan on kayaking be sure they give you the one less likely to tip. And there is a difference. They also have life jackets for you to take but you aren't required to wear them. BE WARNED that is one heck of a windy lake!!! No joke. read more

This campground sits right on the shores of Lake Mary, and if you nab a good spot, you will be able to wander a few steps from your campsite and throw a line right into the lake or launch a canoe. (There is no swimming in Lake Mary, though.) If you don't fish, it's still a great place to camp and just take in the beautiful views. Our first impression of the campground was bad because of one very annoying, but easily solved, problem. There are absolutely no signs directing you where to go for what numbered campsite. I have never been to a campground that didn't give you some directions on how to navigate the loops. This is really a problem for people with trailers who don't really want to cruise through the the narrow roads of the campground searching for their camp number. Apart from this one issue, we really loved this campground. The sites in the lakefront loops are large with a reasonable amount of space between them. We explored through the back loop, and the sites there seem a little more crowded. The bathrooms are clean, with flush toilets and lights. (We noticed that the campground host cleaned them all TWICE a day!) The bear lockers were huge, with plenty of space for all of our stuff. Clearly the Forest Service and our very friendly campground host do a lot to keep this popular campground well maintained. We would gladly come back here. read more

My review is not on the actual camping experience but n the amazing wine dinner that Lake Mary Campground hosts every year. You need to buy tickets in advance because it always sells out. They start off with apps and wine on the balcony overlooking the lake and it is so beautiful. The apps were great and the wine was even better. We were out there for about an hour before being moved inside. Dinner tables were all placed looking over the lake and each table was a table of 8. They served 3 different types of wine through out dinner and dessert. Dinner started off with a salad, main course was salmon, and dessert was apple tort. The money raised at this event goes back in to the community of Mammoth and they are hoping for a Culinary School at some point. It was a very nice event that I plan on attending again. read more

Thought I would take the time to Review this place since all the reviews that I have seen here are not up to date. As well as, giving some insight for those who have not traveled here. 1st - I want to say that these Mammoth Lakes are a sight to see. Great for fishing, family adventures, and to take some beautiful pictures. 2nd - There are great bike trails for those who love to go bike riding. 3rd - I would suggest to take fishing gear, there are a lot of trout within the lakes. 4th - I would definately check out and suggest you start off your first hike with the crystal lake trail. It is by Lake George. 3/4 uphill and then it is all down hill from there. 5th - You may encounter bears. I did see a Momma bear with here 2 cubs. Even though they mind their own business, please be cautious. 6th - I did not make reservations so the whole first come first serve was not what I expected. I would definately ask the park to redo that whole system. If you do not have reservations, I would suggest researching where you want to stay at a day before and stick with it. Real Life Example: I heard Twin lakes was nice so I got there at 5am expecting a line of people waiting to get camp ground. NO WAY! There are many Camp sites in Twin Lakes and they all have a Host! (The Host usually has an American Flag at their station) I wanted to be by the lake and so I waited until the camp host arrived. So when they did, they had to make their rounds and see which groups were leaving and which ones were not, because people can stay as long as 14 days I believe. In all, I waited until 9:30am just to hear that there were no spots avaliable. I then drove to another Camp site in Lake George which was around 1030am now and the host there said that they had given all their camp grounds to the people who had got there early. They suggested I check out Pine City for open spaces and so I did. Luckily a family was leaving because they had an emergency and so they offered us their camp site. The host was cool with it and so we paid $24 for the night. It was a big hassle. So just a heads up. read more

Im rating 3.5 stars, mostly because of the weather. When we went it began to snow! Like 4-5 inches of snow and it was freezing! :( we had to leave by the first night. But mostly its our fault for not doing any research. Getting here is very confusion as well. When you make a left to go to Lake Mary keep going straight (technically right curve) unto the road. We did the mistake of taking another left and we had to go around the lake to finally find the Campground. We were stationed at #12 which was perfect for us since it was right by the Lake. Which had a breathtaking view. Down the road is a kayak and boat rental shop that has fishing equipment, ice, and some snacks. read more

The camp ground only has bathroom and no shower facility. I had a 27' travel trailer and it barely fit on site 32 that we reserved. So if you bring a rv....I would say nothing bigger than 22' . Not too many flat grounds so do your homework and pick the site with a flat ground. .. otherwise you'll be sleeping slanted. You can use generator but only from 6 am to 10 pm. There are bears there so store stuff correctly. Walking distance from Lake and good trout fishing. Caught more fish on shore than on a pontoon we rented. Nice bike trails nearby so bring your bike. Nearby there is Twin Lakes campground. I liked the look of that much better and may do that next time. So check them out too. Only 15 minutes from town so if you forget something. ..Vons is nearby. read more

Great campground! We came in on a Sunday around 1:30pm and had a few first come first serve spaces to choose from! We chose site 10 and set up our tent and went for a hike. An afternoon storm hit and we got back to a flooded campsite. The camp host was helpful in giving us an unofficial spot up on the hill. (Don't choose site 10!) The host was also great in giving us hiking recommendations, like Crystal Crag which was amazing. The location on the lake is so perfect and they space out all of the sites so you feel like you really have your own area. The bathrooms were clean. There were really nice people camping around us, lots of families and older couples. We would definitely come back!! read more

My husband and I camp at various Sierra Nevada campgrounds about once or twice a month. Most campgrounds are wonderful that we have stayed at. We camped at Lake Mary Campground on 8/11/12 for one night. We did not have a reservation which is normal for us about half the time. We set up at an unmarked site assuming it was open and about an hour later one of the campground hosts came up to us yelling that this site is reserved and the people were coming in shortly. We explained why we thought it was open (as most campgrounds mark the name and dates of reservation on tag at each site) and she told us "we don't do things that way here." Apparently she is to lazy to mark the tags as she said she has to keep track of 40 sites and it is impossible. We have stayed in campgrounds where the host keeps track of 100+ sites and doesn't have a spouse to help and he was friendly and told us it was easy. After apologizing for our mistake she finally told us we could have the next site over. Fine, we moved everything. Her husband rudely came up tossing the envelope with the check in it at me telling me I was short a dollar. I somehow thought it was $20 per site, which I was wrong. No problem, paid the extra dollar. About midnight someone came in to set up camp at the site we were originally in and we woke up to a crash. We looked out our tent and saw a woman looking at the front of our car so we thought they backed into it. Luckily no they did not but they told us they were going to stay in the campsite for that night because it is not reserved until the following day. SO THE CAMP HOST LIED TO US ABOUT THE SITE BEING RESERVED. They were apparently on a power trip of some kind. Lake Mary Campground is operated by California Land Management and of all the places I have been that they are responsible for this was the worst. Campground hosts are supposed to be helpful and friendly. These two hosts were everything but helpful and friendly. These hosts should take up a different line of work since they obviously do not like what they do. SIDE NOTE: Lake Mary and the general area is beautiful. Sadly I found a lot of garbage all along the lake shore. I ended up picking up a large trash bag full of plastic bottles, cigarette butts, broken sandals and other trash. This is the first time I have found trash laying around such a beautiful area of the Sierra's. Not sure what is up with that. read more

Pluses: Awesome find, thanks to Camp Host LaDonna, who suggested our particular site while my hubby cruised through on a very packed weekend! Seems most spots at nearby campgrounds have been booked a few months ago. Man we got lucky. Open, spacious area right up from the water, and just enough trees! Perfectly peaceful for campfires and a good book read. Convenient store & equipment rental nearby. I kayaked and paddle boarded! The guys fished. Drawback: Mob of crazed extended foreign family across the way who did NOT comfort an unending wailing child in early AM...some 'jewel' playing with his alarm beeper w/an auto remote well into midnight. Oh, and that they repeatedly violated the "don't wash dishes/pans" right IN the spicket area. (Did I say they constantly left bathrooms nasty behind them? Most countries have flushing now, right?). -campers were buzzing how they went in and hollered at the recreation equipment rental staff about boats not being available (uhm, busy weekend--jog down there EARLY like 'I' did!). They cursed multiple generations of the guy's family. Uhm, okay--way to give your culture 'bad press'. Calm the xxxx down. Geez. It was a great location & all the other folks for campsites around were cool, as were the camp masters. Would def go back. And this time I'll have my Translator app on, so I can increase my skill set & share my culture. We're cool like that. read more

The camping and fishing in this area is wonderful! But the Lake Mary Campground hosts were not very helpful and were very rude with myself and my group. We had a lot of problems getting our campsites and the hosts were not willing to assist us in anyway at all. But once we had our campsites, we had an amazing time! The bear boxes were huge and allowed us to fit 2 ice chests and more inside of it! The restrooms were pretty clean as well! The bears are definitely around, 2 people from our group encountered "Bandit" the bear... We would go back again but would like to be able to reserve our campsites with ease! read more

I camped here 2 years ago and I really love it! Very spacious to set up your tents etc. You have access to the lakes, stores, or anything you need for camping. The only downfall is that it's hard to fish without renting a boat. I don't know how many times I have untangle my line because of the rocks. But overall u wouldn't mind coming again. Beautiful place but it was a tight squeeze to come here in a 25 foot trailer. It wS tight just to drive through the tiny road. Stressful. Also, The spots are right on top of each other as it appears. Great campground because its quite but not too remote. Very close to the water where you can rent boats and also very close is some horseback riding. Overall this is a great campground which isn't too far from town either. read more
