Throughout the test, he delivered instructions with all the clarity of a cryptic riddle, then acted annoyed when I couldn't magically decode them. And the reasons he gave for failing me? Let's just say they were so flimsy and bizarre that they felt pulled out of thin air. Judging by other stories I've heard, this seems to be Larry's personal brand: confusion mixed with condescension, topped with arbitrary judgment. Even if every single one of my supposed "mistakes" had been real, his final bit of "advice" was to read the driving manual--as if I hadn't already passed the written exam at the top of the score range. Stunning insight from a man whose entire test amounts to parallel parking and taking a victory lap around a parking lot. That test proves absolutely nothing: passing doesn't mean you can drive, and failing doesn't mean you can't. But Larry struts around like he's the grand arbiter of all roadworthiness. I didn't know that the barn was on the property but I really liked its rustic vibe. (Though I could imagine in the fall the giant trees around it raining down nuts and other seasonal tree bits!) I also like that there's a hotel nearby for out of town guests. I mostly worked with Kate, who was very responsive over email and is obviously an expert in her field. She helped me realize that there's something to be said for the personal touch you get when working with a staff dedicated to one venue, rather than some of the big event companies who can make you feel like just another number. Ultimately I decided to go with the city vibe so picked a different boutique venue in Philadelphia proper, but I'd definitely recommend checking out Duportail, especially if you're mostly having a local gathering.

The Paoli Battlefield was the site of the Paoli Massacre of 1777. After losing the Battle of the Brandywine, General Washington and his rebel army retreated to protect Philadelphia from the British advance. He left a contingent of soldiers under General Anthony Wayne hidden, they thought. These trips were to disrupt supply lines. Unfortunately, the British learned of this group. They attacked in the dark of night, killing 53 soldiers. One British officer died. His remains along with the dead officers are buried at nearby St Peter's Church of the Great Valley (see my review). The battlefield is now owned by the Borough of Malvern and maintained by them. There are plaques describing the events and a cell phone tour, which was very interesting. My only reason for a star deduction was the condition of some of the plaques, their laminate surfaces so damaged that they were very difficult to read. It's a beautiful, haunting place.
