Singapore Chow Mei Fun (left) & Double Cooked Pork (right)
    Nora C.

Eastern Carry Out Ratings: 3.8 Food: 4/5 - Grew up with parents owning a Chinese take-out restaurants, my sister and I will always crave them once in a while. They are mainly our childhood memory and comfort food, so we decided to order two of our favorites, and we were definitely satisfied after the meal. - Singapore Chow Mei Fun [GET]: One of my favorite thing at a Chinese take-out restaurant. The rice noodles are al dente, thin, and chewy. It comes with shrimp, pork, chicken, an egg and some veggies. I love the curry flavor and the texture of the noodles. The only downside was that it was bland, but just add soy sauce to it, and you will be fine, LOL. - Double Cooked Pork [GET]: Shredded pork with stir fry veggies: cabbage, carrots, celery, mushrooms, and zucchini in a spicy brown sauce. The shredded pork was tender, easy to chew, and well-marinated. The dish is very flavorful, tasted delicious with the side of white rice, especially because the rice is good and chewy. Make sure to soak the sauce into the rice. Ambiance: 3.75/5 - The restaurant is located in a big shopping center. The interior is small and currently is not available for indoor dining due to COVID. The cash register is blocked with a clear plastic border for safety purposes, and there are some Asian decorations on the wall with a light up menu on display. This is a take-out place only. Price: 3.75/5 - The Singapore chow mei fun was $12.95 and the double cooked pork was $13.55. The total came up to be around $30 on UberEats for pick up. I thought the double cooked pork was a bit pricey, since there weren't that much pork given in the dish, mainly just veggies. The portion size was good, but definitely more expensive compared to other Asian places in the area. Service: 3.75/5 - Ordered Eastern Carry Out via UberEats and picked it up. The service was really fast, and the food was ready within 10 minutes after placing the order. Staff is nice and friendly, greeted us when we walked in, and follows COVID-19 protocols. Typical customer service for most Chinese restaurants. BLUF: Average Chinese take-out restaurants. Great people and good food, definitely go support local businesses if you can. I love how fast the service is, super efficient and prompt.

Typical Chinese restaurant. The food is average and the inside is kind of dingy and outdated. There are 2 tables in there, but as the name states, this place is pretty much just for cary out. Speaking of the restaurants' name, some people might find this confusing, but even though the name is Eastern Cary Out, the store front only says "Chinese Food". Lastly, I find it a little odd that they have a few random things for sale at the counter. One of them being a clothes rack in a box... I guess you never know when you might need to hang some clothes???

Chinese takeout has become somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine after living across the street from one for a year. I don't get it often, but sometimes you just want to chow down on fried rice and saucy fried chicken. --Food: I had the General Tso's Chicken Platter which consisted of a heaping portion of General Tso's Chicken, a bed of Pork Fried Rice, and a fried Egg Roll. The chicken was hot upon pickup, was seasoned well, and was nice and crispy. The rice wasn't bursting with flavor, but it didn't taste overly salty either. The egg roll I could take or leave, but I never really have loved egg rolls. All in all I was not disappointed. --Cost: The combination platter I got above was $8.35. I didn't realize there was a lunch special for $6.35 of essentially the same thing but with soup instead of an egg roll. I'll save that for another day. --Service: I only went in for pickup, but the cashier was nice and gave me my food without any troubles. --Atmosphere: Pickup chinese take out places aren't renowned for their interiors. That said, they have a few tables and the shop seems to be kept well. I've seen worse. --Overall: I had a very pleasant experience with Eastern Carry Out and it will likely be where I go to for Chinese takout in the future. It wasn't the absolute best Chinese American food I've eaten before, but it by no means was the worst. Add that to the reasonable prices, quick prep times, and delivery options and you have yourself a place worth visiting. Eastern Carry Out is not a fancy Chinese place and it doesn't try to be, if you're in the mood for Chinese take out, give it a try.

Rice was greasy but usually their really good.

I ordered the shrimp fried rice for lunch. Not only was the guy who took my order over the phone really rude and just wanted to rush me off the phone but when I came to pick my food up he was also rude and put my credit card on top of the counter magnetic strip down instead of handing it back to me. The shrimp fried rice barely had but about six shrimp. The rice was also over cooked or either their oil needed to be changed. I will never order from here again the rice isn't even that great. Yen Ching across the street is much better quality for a few dollars more but hey...you pay for what you get right.

To me, a great presentation and a beautiful atmosphere are wonderful, but at the end of the day? Nothing can replace pure, authentic flavor. Well, Fat Dragon in Virginia absolutely blew me away. From the second we walked in, the experience was seamless. We had a party of eight with no reservation, and they sat us immediately. The ambiance was great, the portions were incredibly generous, and the staff was friendly, attentive, and completely on top of their game. Drinks arrived fast, and the entire meal flowed beautifully without a single hitch. But let's get to the real highlight of the night: the Tsingtao beer-battered mushrooms. Oh my goodness, they were out of this world! Perfectly fried and crispy on the outside, incredibly juicy on the inside, and dusted with a spicy Sichuan cloud that made them completely irresistible. They were so good that even my father--who isn't a mushroom lover at all--couldn't stop eating them! For my main course, I had the Fei Lone steak, and it was absolutely sublime. Tender, perfectly prepared, and packed with flavor. If you appreciate amazing service, a great vibe, and food that actually delivers on taste, do yourself a favor and check out Fat Dragon. I'll definitely be thinking about those mushrooms for a long time!

The entryway is interesting and provides some shelter from the rain, allowing you to manage your umbrella before entering. We were seated within seconds, and our server, Liza, came by very promptly with some water for our table. I felt slightly anxious at first, being that we were in a cozy two-top amongst the fray, but it subsided quickly because everyone was respectful and reasonably quiet. We ordered the veggie spring rolls to start, and I had the Chinatown Ramen, and my partner had the Chicken Fried Noodles. The appetizer was hot, savory, and spicy with the duck sauce and hot mustard mixture. If you like milder sauce, do not mix it. The entrees came out within five or so minutes of the appetizers, which seemed quick for a busy night. The ramen was spicy, hot, and filling. I was only able to finish about half. We will be enjoying those leftovers tonight. My partner said that her noodles and chicken were well-seasoned and delicious, too. Looking around the restaurant, it is clear that they support the local LGBTQ+ community, and it is even labeled as a Safe Space on the beautifully manicured, makeshift chalkboard/menu/posting board. The clientele and staff alike seemed warm and kind, based solely on limited interactions and observation on my part. If you are looking for a traditional American-Chinese food restaurant (think buffet-style items), this is likely not the place for you. There were no mishaps or snafus with our orders. Liza performed her duties well, and I can surely recommend this restaurant to anyone who doesn't mind a mix of Japanese and Chinese cuisine.

FOOD -- I ordered the Guandong Fried Rice ($10.50) which comes with peas, carrots, and egg. I added shrimp ($5.50) as my protein. A glass of water was also brought out for me. My friend ordered the basil chicken ($18.50) with a Maine Root Beer drink ($4.50). She loved her order. I enjoyed the Guandong Fried Rice with added shrimp. It wasn't overly rich in flavour. This one is in Richmond proper. The menus are generally similar but a little bit different at each. I got a cabbage dish that you often see at these restaurants as well as a kung pao tofu that I don't recall ordering before. Their interpretation of the tofu was distinctive, with a zingy flavor redolent of cooking wine and asparagus as well as the more typical bell peppers and peanuts. The cabbage is uncommonly delicious the way they prepare it. The price was kind of high for two takeout vegetable dishes, but the quality was about what I'd hoped.

Not too doughy, and accompanied by two dipping sauces. The fish rolls were excellent. Light, crispy, with a savory fish filling. So satisfying. For entrees we got dry fried shredded chicken (so tasty and unique), shredded duck, and three pepper beef. The chicken was the star - crispy strip of chicken delicately seasoned. The duck dish was good, but probably not the best way to order duck. The three pepper beef was spicy and fragrant. We left full and happy and will pop in again next time we have a yen for Chinese.
