I was originally admitted to the University of Washington BASW program, but because the program is hybrid and my employer could not accommodate the required in-person classes, I began looking for a fully online BASW. That led me to Eastern Washington University. While the Online BASW program itself is appealing, my admissions experience was unfortunately one of the most difficult I have encountered. After being admitted to EWU, I applied to the BASW program. From that point on, it often felt like the different departments were not communicating with one another. I was told multiple times that my official transcripts had not been received, even though another department had already confirmed they had been received. I found myself repeatedly providing screenshots of emails and confirming information that had already been given to me by EWU staff. The process felt disorganized, and I often had the impression that one department did not know what another department was doing. As a prospective transfer student trying to make an important educational decision, it was frustrating to spend so much time following up on information that should have already been available internally. There were positive experiences along the way. Al A. was knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely helpful. Denise A. was also courteous and assisted me with the admissions process. I appreciate the time they took to answer my questions. Unfortunately, those positive interactions were overshadowed by the overall lack of coordination. I never felt confident that my application was moving forward, and because my transcript evaluation continued to be delayed, I ultimately had to withdraw my application to avoid losing my place at another university. I believe EWU has a strong Online BASW program with great potential, but the admissions process would benefit greatly from better communication between departments, more consistent information, and a stronger focus on supporting prospective students. This school hates disabled people. My accommodations were not enforced in any way, and I have other disabled friends who attended who experienced discrimination and the disability and Title IX office did nothing about it. The school used to have a test proctoring service for disabled students, but now on their website, the JFK library says that test proctoring is only available for nondisabled students. If you're disabled, steer clear of this school. read more

But the damn building I was in didn't have easily accessible elevators. So, I had to lug a bunch of stuff up stairs. Groan. I just finished up my second quarter at Eastern (I'm a transfer student), and I've got nothing but good things to say. * Eastern's tuition is one of the lowest in Washington state for state schools (about $3000/year lower than UW) * Eastern has the same business accreditation as UW (AACSB-International) * The professors all know their stuff and are more than willing to help outside of class if needed. So far I've had six excellent and one boring professor. * Very generous with grants and scholarships. Next year I am getting $18,000 in aid and $15,000 of that does not need to be repaid. * Cheney is a great small town, with very inexpensive housing/utilities/food prices. read more

I come from an Eagle family, my parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, the whole gang. So it was not much of a question of where I would go to school. I feel so blessed to be a student at this university. It has a very close knit community where everyone feels like family and, unfortunately I feel that is hard to find these days. Freshman year I stayed in Dressler where I made many like long friends, but even outside of the dorms the classes and events still have a family feel. The URC is outstanding and with all of the upgrades they are making eastern will be serious competition for other universities. Also love the atmosphere of the tailgates and football season!! With a high number of Alumni returning I know many others feel the way I do about this university. GO EAGS!! read more

This review is from the perspective of a parent of a student. I do believe my daughter would give 4 or 5 stars based on her experiences (although I know she has struggled with the guidance counseling department but I can't speak to that). I realize this is college and the students are adults and need to take responsibility for themselves but it's also true that when it comes to PAYING tuition or other amounts due it falls on their parents or other options. First their website is hard to navigate, if I want to make a payment it takes a lot of searching to do so. They need to have a button at the top of the financial website that says "make a payment" or "pay my bill" instead I am always searching for this option, so annoying! My second complaint also has to to do with the finance department, they are VERY unorganized and come across as hard to work with and rude. I had the displeasure of calling recently and ended the call wondering who is auditing this department?!?! The gal I spoke to was rude and arrogant, I asked to speak to someone in charge and she said they don't take complaints. Interesting way to deal with issues. I am happy this is our last year at EWU! read more

I finished my freshman year at EWU and I will not be returning. It's important to note that this is based on my experience, and your experience may be different, so take my review with a grain of salt. When I toured the campus I loved it and could see myself going there. When my family and I went back up for orientation however, it was a clear foreshadowing of what was to come from the professors and administrators at EWU. Different majors were put into groups and we would go around to different activities during the day. Multiple times my family and I were left behind by our group guide, forcing us to go and look for where they might be. Overall this showed me how disorganized the staff is at Eastern. My second main issue at EWU was the lack of help from the financial aid office. At the beginning of the year, they lowered my financial aid by $3000, and told me my only options were loans rather than a payment plan. This essentially screwed me over for the rest of the year financially. Due to this, I was also unable to register for classes until the last day due to the balance on my account that resulted from financial aid screwing me over. My 3rd main issue with EWU was the huge lack of healthy food options on campus. Most of the time all that was ever available was fatty foods and snacks, of course priced 2x more than what they were worth. After a while, you get sick of it. Overall, I'm grateful for the friends I made and the experiences I had that helped me here at EWU, but I would not recommend this school, especially if you are from the west side like I am. read more

Went on a campus tour of this place: worst tour guide ever!! Dude said just about everything was "cool because eastern was cool". He clearly had no idea what he was talking about given that he couldn't tell us any of the majors that any of the buildings held! Someone on our tour corrected him at multiple stops, as well as some staff passing by! He also tried to tell us that the institution was founded in 1876 which made it about 200 years old! Not sure how he had graduated from EWU, and it was increasing unsettling because he informed us he was an admissions counselor! Hopefully the rest of the school isn't as dumb as he was read more

I completed my undergraduate degree at EWU and was very happy with the experience and support I received in 2008. I graduated with Magna Cum Laude Honors and was on the Dean's List for three years. Jump forward to 2022, when I returned to EWU to complete my 6th Masters Degree. I found the Special Education Department very supportive. But the financial aid/student services department is beyond incompetent. They will fail to get you through the financial aid process and leave you unable to continue or complete your degree. Do not even bother registering with Disability Services, they have no follow through and do not care, and in fact, the only time you will hear from them is after you fail to obtain accommodations or experience discrimination and they inform you that you were never registered with them despite the fact you sent all the info they requested. Its appalling. Administration is a joke. It was a huge disappointment. Do yourself a favor and go to Texas A&M, or University of Florida, or Kansas State University. Their programs are much better and they are Tier-level schools. Avoid EWU. I have been in graduate school since 2010 and this was the worst experience of my life. Their financial aid packages absolutely suck and DO NOT cover your costs of living and they do not have a budget appeal process nor do they care. Do not go here, you will be disappointed and you will experience discrimination if you have any sort of disability because they simply do not care about their students. read more

I was visiting my brother in Cheney and had the opportunity to work out in Eastern's gym on campus. It was really nice, large, and had lots of different machines. They even had a walking or running track inside along with many courts. The campus is nice. read more

Wonderful campus just really small and is defiantly a cheap place. I see it as a good starting point in my college career but I plan on transferring out because it is not urban and has less opportunities than UW. The value of the education was not that great and I do not like the social vibe of the campus. I will not regret leaving because it feels like a junior college because most of the students are from Spokane. read more

EWU used to be cheap! Not anymore! Because of WAC 172-130, EWU's cost of education for first year students jumped up to $12,600 despite of the tuition reduction recently passed by Gov. Inslee, which is approximately a $10.50/credit discount. It's ridiculous! EWU is making it hard on their first year students to get an exemption, even because of financial hardship, because they justify it with providing these students with more loans whether they can afford these loans or not. It's common knowledge that almost half of all freshmen do not graduate with a degree. It does not make any sense why EWU would pass their costs onto them. It makes more sense to pass it onto seniors, who will graduate with a degree within a year and have a good job to pay it back. Common sense is no longer common! read more

WAC 172-130 is a game changer for EWU! EWU is no longer a good option for students under 21 years of age. There are way better alternatives now. If you can afford to spend an extra $20,000, you might as well consider going to a more prestigious school with much better accommodations. If you cannot afford to spend that kind of money, go to a community college instead, transfer when you are almost 21 years of age, and be exempt from WAC 172-130. Either way, you'll be better off than going to EWU! For dependent-types, you can always choose to live at home, but if you choose this option, EWU needs a good reason and will require you to live at home until you turn 21 years old. Before this law, you were paying for their education. Now, you're paying for their dorms, meal plans, Obamacare, STA, PUB, and other facilities, too - "The College Experience" as they call it. What a hoax! EWU was an "A-" before this law. Now, EWU is a solid "D". Before you make any commitments, make sure to visit the campus, especially the dorms, as it is now part of your education and will cost you an extra $20,000 during your first year! read more

The campus services are great. There's a lot of options for food on campus, decent gym facilities, and from my experience advising and student services are very easily accessible. I've had some amazing teachers as well including Kamp, Steiner, and Alhloul. The computer science and engineering departments are EXTREMELY good and student friendly from my experience so far. The teachers challenge you and make you think. It's tough, but you come out of the experience knowing way more than you did going in. And they're always there to help with any questions you may have. The only two things that I found to be...not good are: 1. Dorm facilities. I was in Dryden hall and man was it rough. The whole place smelled like sweat and garbage. Not surprised because there was no AC, but it smelled bad even during Winter. At the end of Spring my room was constantly at 85-90 degrees even at night. It was so bad I couldn't even sleep. I can't imagine living there over Summer. 2. The math department. How can a campus have such an amazing computing and engineering department and such a bad math department? The precalculus teachers I've had so far are just awful. Graham doesn't even teach, she just gives you "warm up problems" and leaves you to sit there wondering how you are supposed to solve them when you haven't been taught the material yet while she walks around the room and helps some of the students who raise their hands, and then after 40 minutes of that she spends a few minutes IF THAT teaching a single formula in smiley faces, stars and "blots". Absolutely worthless. Then there's Seshu Rao. Wow was he awful. He at least taught, but half the material in the homework wasn't in his lessons or even in the book. He gives out a ton of homework all at once, and only grades one problem per page or something like that. The feedback is awful and I spent most of the quarter wondering how much of the material I knew and understood. He gives out quizzes constantly before students are ready because he hasn't spent enough time on the material yet and wonders why students aren't doing well on them. After every quiz on the quarter I had him he would say to the whole class that it took too long for us to do the quiz and we weren't doing well enough. Maybe the problem's on your end and isn't necessarily your students' fault. He also made one of the biggest mistakes a teacher can make several times where he said that the material he was about to teach was basically useless and the only time we'll ever use it is when he asks us to in homework. So why are you teaching it then? TEACH ME SOMETHING I CAN USE. I am here to learn skills I will need in order to survive in the big scary world after I'm through with college. Why am I stuck here learning something I will never use? Not to mention he knows he's doing a bad job, but rather than do anything to change his lessons or the way he teaches he just adds random bonus points to tests to make his test scores go up a bit so he won't get in trouble. He's an unethical, lazy, condescending teacher who clearly doesn't care about whether his students walk away with any new knowledge after completing the class. It's all about the grades to him and it shows. The math department at Eastern is so bad I'm taking the rest of my math requirements online from other colleges. read more

This is a beautiful campus year round! It's the perfect size- not too big, not too small- and you will be happy to call this place home. There are great little fun places to eat on campus, and the facilities- library, lab, dining area- are a fun place to meet friends or study. Not to mention the Inferno!! Go, Eags. read more
