Grits IS a dive bar, so please keep that in mind if you visit here. It's not fancy. The drinks come in plastic cups. You get the idea. BUT - this is a perfect dive bar. It's dog friendly. It's spacious. You can watch a game on one of their TVs. You can play darts. You can play pool. You can hang on their outside patio. You can play the slots. You can check out their fabulous decor. Sit at a bar, a table, or a booth. So many options. Where else can you hear the hottest hits of the 90s and early 2000s while enjoying a wonderful evening with friends and family? RACIST ASF! Around 2:30-3:00 AM on Friday night, I approached the bar. A white man, older, with grey hair and a larger stomach, asked to see my ID. He scanned it and examined it then asked what school i go to. i said loyola and he asked for a student ID. J said i didn't have it but then i found my tulane ID as I do dual enrollment there! He examined it and said it was fake and rejected me. After that i watched him let in multiple people without asking for their school ID. I was the only one who was asked for this. I said this must be racist because how are you letting all these other (white! besides me) people in. He replied "You people always say that" extremely rude as how do you even fake a school ID??? The only requirement should be being 21, which I was. read more

Returned here while on a bike ride and decided to pop in for a drink and some food. I like it even better this time visiting. Great friendly staff. Easy parking outside. Clean place. Didn't walk out to their courtyard but I'm looking forward to it next time. I wish they'd jazz up their food a bit. We had Chicken Tenders, Fries and Mozzarella Sticks. Mozzarella sticks were pretty good but the chicken tenders were not. If this spot had better food we'd be there weekly spending a lot more. Drinks are amazingly cheap. Since it is located next to F&M, I expected a very similar establishment, but Grit's was a tad more bearable. When I walked into Grit's, I knew I was in a better place. There was a very large area with seating and pool tables that was not crowded at all. It also had working air conditioning. This area would be the place to sit if you actually wanted to talk to the people you were with. The other half of the bar was the dance area. It was much darker and filled with gyrating intoxicated people. The crowd seemed a little older than F&M, but it was hard to guess ages when people were hammering back drinks and dancing to Juvenile's Back that Ass Up. While I can't recommend either bar, Grit's is definitely the lesser of two evils. If your friends insist, come here instead of F&M. Note: While at this bar I did experience on of the rudest people I have ever dealt with. Without going into details, I offer this advice; drinking is no excuse for being a totally offensive shithead. Half of this bar is a pool and game area and the other half is a dance area. When everybody gets bored and tired of F&M's they stumble over here to jump into the techno dirty dance fever that hits the dance floor here. What you see on the pool table at F&M's is what you see all over the dance floor here. Dirty, dark, and dank things happen all over the place here. It does piss me off they charge more for drinks here than right next door at F&M's. This is the purgatory to stop at to prepare your soul right before making the full commitment to dive deep down into that late night dankness known as Snake'n Jakes Christmas Club Lounge... I have been a New Orleans native for more than 10 years, and recently moved across country. I got in easily with my Oregon (moved to Portland) ID the first time around. Bar was *very* crowded. They were letting in more that the max occupancy, no question, because it was not a safe environment. I was about to walk out, and I said to the bouncer, "I am about to walk out to check for my girlfriend who said she was on the 'patio,' but she might still be inside, I might be right back; and this guy with a thick mustache and a hefty girth who I had just shared a decent conversation with said "sure, no problem, see you soon." Not 5 minutes later I come back and say "'hey, I was just in and my girlfriend meant the patio inside." He saw my Oregon ID (which he had seen earlier in the night) and asked if I had a secondary way of verifying. I handed him my CC and as he was checking the ID I mentioned how I had just been inside and how I was from La and he said "MOVE ALONG, SIR!." This is after we lost an item and all members of the staff deferred to other locations. The security was terrible, and they refused to take accountability for the definition of "max occupancy." As a former local, and now visitor, due the true service I was subjected to, I could not recommend this bar to anyone. I feel comfortable, in fact, saying that I walked in initially with a large drink (a triple of bulliet rye) and did not patronize this bar. I would have, happily, bought something from this establishment for my good friend's birthday, but the service of the bartenders and bouncers (who obviously search arbitrarily) was so horrendous that I would find it morally inconscieniable to recommend anyone ever to support this establishment. I will never return, and hope that no one else does either, until new staff is hired. read more

Grit's isn't as bad as it's next door neighbor, F&M's. The crowd tends to be a little bit older and the music is more tolerable. I stopped in on a week night for drinks with a few friends and I realized that it's actually a decent establishment. The drinks are well priced and the bar is a "hang out" for friendly neighborhood folks who are happy to make conversation. I remember this place before the smoking ban, and I can only imagine that the ban worked in Grit's favor. The shrimp and grits was so good I ordered a second to go. Good food is where you find it and this local bar in the warehouse has cold beer and all the usual amenities like 4 steel tip dart boards and pool. That are why I went but my meal is literally what I would expect from a fine dining version. Perfectly cooked flavorful shrimp, seasoned with an eclectic but subtle mix of spices, and finished with a nutty browned butter and perfectly cooked grits. I can't wait to eat my "to go" portion. As a side note I learned the bar is named Grit's after the original owner not their now popular dish. read more

Grits is a great neighborhood dive bar! The drinks are cheap, the staff is nice, and if you go at off times it isn't too busy. I like Grits as a bar to go with a few friends and hang out, drink a few beers, and play pool. While on weekend nights it gets a lot of the spillover from F&Ms (college kids), the crowd is usually a little older here. On weekends it turns into more of a dance party, so stay away unless that is your scene! Grits is also the bar for WAKA kickball leagues so keep that in mind if you are going during the week! Unfortunately there wasn't a zero star option. I live down the street and wanted late night food. Me and my brothers ordered around $50 worth of food and tipped normal like 20% and they acted like that was out of the norm. The whole place is empty and dead how I expected and wanted. Quick service in and out New York style. But no one of my brothers gets his food immediately and then out of no where the place gets swamped with 18-20 year olds and chaos then starts people ordering drinks and not paying I watched 13 country kids try to fight one kid for no reason. 45min - 1hr later I'm have little patience and I find out they gave my food away. I'm literally listening to the guy I tipped telling the other guy that I'm the correct person not whoever the guy he handed food to earlier. He walks up and said oh we are having kitchen fryer issues. Another hour goes by. I don't drink and I've been at this bar for 2 hours after REFUSING TO REFUND ME around 6 times. I didn't even want the food anymore I just wanted to leave and I couldn't. He said you can take the food when it comes or wait till we close to get a refund when I paid cash for everything with cash tips. All we ordered was burgers and chicken tenders and 2 hours later no food. It took me getting semi violent for the kitchen manger to finally come talk to me and try to brush me off. I then had to stop him in his words to explain nothing matters anymore y'all gave our food away and refusing to give us our cash back and we have been here two hours. I was so irritated when he finally gave me the money back I threw it at them and left with no food or money. Went and got hamburgers and fries down the street at rainbow connivence in like 3 minutes and a quarter of the price. Tipped the guy at the rainbow more than what it cost for saving the late night munchies. Grits please shut down you down even have grits. read more

This is such a sad, sad bar to be on any given day of the week. How in the hell did I ever end up in this tragedy on a weekend? Well, you know I'm always good for a story and boy, I sure do have one. Have a seat and allow me to tell you the tale of 'Weekend at Grit's'.... We had a recruit from my company in town and of course, we were trying to show her a good time. A friend of mine called me and asked to meet them at the Balcony Bar because it was this particular recruit's last day in town and she was staying with a friend in the vicinity. It was a little late but I said ok and met up with them outside on the balcony. We chatted with the recruit at the bar until about 9 PM and then she headed back, since she had a flight back home in the early AM. I was NOT in the mood to drink or party that particular night but my ex, unfortunately, was. I kept trying to head back home but she continued saying no. Eventually, most of our friends had peeled off for other ventures and at around 11 PM, another group of our friends showed up. They had already been on some sort of a pub crawl and appeared wasted. Everyone was drunk except me, which is always awesome when you're the sober one. I, again, tried to go home but my ex said no and replied "we're going over to Grit's". "Where the hell is that place?? It's like midnight and you want to go out drinking EVEN MORE??", I seemed to say. When we got to the bar around 12:30 AM, my ex ordered a beer and I handed the bartender my card to keep the tab opened. The way these fishes were going, they weren't going to stop drinking anytime soon. The place just looked like a hole to me. I can say that because I was sober the whole time. There was no one else in there at the time except us. The music was pretty bad. They were playing 80's hits. Now personally, I can tolerate 80s music so long as it's GOOD 80's music, NOT Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart"!! I mean, who the hell can dance to something like that, anyway?? It's just about the cheesiest line ever, too. Could that ever be used in a REAL line to someone?? "Hey, babe, ya' know, I was falling in love and like, now I'm just falling apart, you know? It's like there's nothing I can do and I got this total eclipse of the heart...." OMG lamest ever!! Over the course of the evening, the quality of the music slowly ramped up but it still hovered just a degree above horri-bad. They didn't even play any synthesizer beats from Howard Jones!! Around 1 PM, that's when the creatures of the night spawned inside the bar. Suddenly, I turned around and it was like a scene from "Thriller", when Michael Jackson is grappled by a swarm of zombies. These people looked about the same, too. First off, the bar had these trash cans on wheels all around the place and people kept pushing them around and the contents were spilling out all over the dance floor. The whole area was filled with cigarette smoke, too. Eventually, I lost my ex in the fog and ended up with this other monster of a girl, who happened to grab me and throw her arms around my neck. Little did I know, however, that she was holding a bottle of beer in one hand and as she grabbed me, she tipped the bottle and poured the beer all the way down my back! This all happened just as "Girls Just Wanna' Have Fun" had begun playing. Coincidence or were the gods just messing with me again? I got away from the girl by turning her around and walking her into the back of another guy, who was so drunk that he turned around and both of them fell into a drunken embrace. I just wanted to get the hell out of there. "Where the hell is my date??" There were two other girls standing with a couple of guys with beads and one girl opened up her top to expose her breasts. It looked like the other guy was twisting on the other girl's pair like he was taking the lid off a peanut butter jar. I could have been wrong, though. I pushed my way through another bouncing group of girls, two of them throwing up in the corner behind the table all over the floor. One of the girls was doing this wailing scream as she threw up. I thought that was really weird because I've never heard that before. She sounded like a banshee. I eventually saw my ex, drunk and dancing with a garbage can on wheels near the girls restroom. I pushed through an onslaught of drunks to get to her. Someone had just come out of the girl's restroom when I arrived and I saw a girl on the floor in there. I grabbed my ex and dragged her out as a toga party was forming on the dance floor. The guys were standing on furniture and one guy I saw broke a chair and rolled out onto the floor into the crowd and just laid there. When we left, two huge drunks without shirts on were being arrested just outside the joint. I got home and showered only to realize I forgot my credit card. There is a $10 minimum so I had to pay the remaining $6 to get the card back. This is a scary place!! read more

It looks like you're in a cypress swamp. They have literally stapled spanish moss to the ceiling. Grits is nothing special. It's the people you go there with who will make your night either a great one or a crappy one.

The only time I've been to Grits is during the day to watch the Saints games and I LOVE IT! I almost don't want to write this review and keep this great place to myself! They show the game on a huge projection screen and there is hardly anyone there so their is plenty of seating and attentive, friendly bartenders that serve cheap strong drinks. The food is delicious too! The have pool and darts and the decorations in the place make me feel like I'm in a jungle. I always have a good time there and it makes me wonder why I don't go there more often.... read more

Great little spot. We were visiting from Alabama with my in-law brother and sister from Maine. Staff was always friendly. We rented Airbnb three door down and walked down most nights after a day in the city. Great food ( if cook was in) and fun with Brigette and she was helpful with places to see and taught us how to eat crawfish. read more

Grit's is great, but they misplaced my card (-1 star) and I had to pick it up the next day. They run an ungodly number of cards a night so I can't hold it against them that much. And the bartender was pretty apologetic about it - given the complete madhouse that it was at the time, I appreciate he didn't try to write me off. read more

Grit's charges a $20 credit card minimum. This is against every credit card service provider's policy. If you google "Report merchant minimum violation" and your credit card company's name, you can easily report them. Takes about 5 minutes. You should do this with any merchant who requires a minimum. Anyway, this place is OK for a break when F&M's gets too crazy, and the bartender's aren't too shabby. The management is clearly skeevy though. Also, the bouncer broke my 23 year old friend's ID in half and said that means it's fake. read more

I love this place! It is an old, shitty, ugly bar, and it's just GREAT! We had a great time at New Years here last year. $35 for open bar till 1 am and a free champagne toast at midnight. I got my first stitches due to an incident outside this bar and it was still one of the best nights ever! If you wanna get RETARDED SLOPPY drunk and have a damn good time and dance your ass off till the wee morning hours, this is definitely the place to go! read more
