Had a late dinner here on a Monday evening. A great location to end our vacation...we fly out tomorrow. I highly recommend this place. We both had the same dish, Blackened Red Fish. Add the vegetables and red beans and rice. I heard the coleslaw was great...so I ordered a side. I read what others say on Yelp for suggestions and what the food looks like via pictures people submit. The portions are hearty and the prices are fair. At first service was a little unfriendly but the waitress may have just been busy as it got better as the lunch went on. A nice OLD restaurant, Pierre Masapero was established in 1788. Thankfully they have updated their recipes. The interior is old, really old but it adds to the charm. This was my first stop on my six day trip and the food was good. I ordered the Crescent City sampler. The jambalaya rice was cooked perfectly, The gumbo was good but light on spices, The redbeans & rice contrasted with creamy beans and fluffy rice. The etouffee was the least flavorful but all four dishes were different from one another. Although lighter on spices, this place is a good place to eat. The service was slow, but the place was busy for a Friday early lunch. The menu and ambiance of the restaurant wasn't as nice as what I thought the reviews said, but the place was clean. The tables are put very close together, you can hear your neighbors' conversations easily. My crab cakes were cooked to perfection with a nice sauce to pair and sautéed veggies. We walked by this place earlier in the the day and the menu looked decent so we went back for dinner. It was a Monday night so it was pretty quiet inside. I wish I remembered our server's name, but it wasn't a common name and it has slipped my mind, but, she was wonderful! She was friendly and helpful. Especially when my husband couldn't decided between a few dishes. As soon as he mentioned the seafood pot pie, she told him that is it! She was right He still can't stop raving about it. The shrimp, the blue crab, the sauce, all of it. He was skeptical of the fried bowtie pasta that came with the artichoke spinach dip. But they were perfect for the dip, which was also delicious. We literally landed in New Orleans and came straight here, and honestly it was the perfect way to start the trip. We went to the original Pierre Maspero's and ordered the alligator bites, crawfish étouffée, and shrimp and grits, plus bottomless mimosas and a Hurricane. Everything hit the spot. The alligator bites were crispy and flavorful, the étouffée was rich and comforting, and the shrimp and grits were packed with flavor without being too heavy. The drinks definitely added to the experience, especially the bottomless mimosas after traveling. The vibe felt very New Orleans, lively but still relaxed, and the staff was friendly and welcoming....loved the Christmas decorations! For it being our very first meal after landing, it set the tone for the whole trip in the best way. Would absolutely come back and recommend it as a must-stop when you first get into town. read more

The atmosphere was easy going, and it was neat to be in the historic building. We ordered the fried green tomato appetizer, and we were pleased with just how many shrimp were served with it. The seasoning on the shrimp was just a tiny bit spicy, but it was not unmanageable. It balanced really nicely with the remoulade (we got it on the side). We ordered the fried gulf shrimp po boy, which was solid. We also got the shrimp and grits, which they were nice enough to prepare in a non-spicy sauce for me. It was really good. The sauce was subtle while allowing all of the Creole spices to shine through. I was unsure of why there was a piece of ham on it, but it brought a really tasty smokiness. I could have actually had several other pieces of it on there! The service was great, and the manager even remembered my original question about the sauce on the fried green tomatoes, so when it came out, it was on the side even though we forgot when we ordered from our waitress. She was so sweet and so kind, and showed what that New Orleans hospitality is all about! We ordered our drinks, and she gave us a few minutes to take a look at the menu. We all quickly decided what it is we wanted, but we had a few questions and wanted her recommendations as well, which she was happy to give! I wanted one thing and a different item together, and Ms. Shelley said she could make that happen with no hesitation and a big ol' smile!! She made my heart melt. As we chatted away, the drinks we tried were great. The restaurant was cozy, a little dark, and had a nice charm about it as well. The other patrons in the restaurant were super sweet, it was easy to strike up a convo with two different tables! Before we knew it, our food had arrived and everything looked and smelled amazing! I went with the Alfredo pasta with blackened red fish, and it was everything I was craving and more. Everything was seasoned just right for me, not overly, not under, just right! I really enjoyed my dinner at The Original Pierre Maspero's. This Cajun restaurant is located in an historic building constructed in 1799. It was a location where slaves were traded. But also General Andrew Jackson planned for the Battle of New Orleans here, which in victory established our independence over the British. He later became our country's 7th President. I had the Blacked Redfish with Fried Green Tomatoes topped with Shrimp Remoulade. It was the first time I had fried green tomatoes and they were great. The shrimp remoulade brought it to another level. The blackened redfish was delicious albeit on the salty side. The side of spinach sautéed with mushrooms was perfect. We were staying at The Eliza Jane and asked the front desk for a local recommendation; somewhere authentic and not packed with tourists. Without hesitation, they suggested this restaurant, so we gave it a try our first evening in town. It did not disappoint. In fact, it exceeded every expectation. The place has a mirror on one wall, to give the illusion of a larger space, but it's not very big. Drinks- we started with drinks. I ordered the passion fruit Rita, with light ice, honestly I should have asked for no ice and give in a shorter glass. It got watered down quickly. I had an exceptional dinner at Pierre Maspero's. This was unplanned - my friend and I stumbled upon this place and decided to try it, and I'm so glad we did. Everything we ordered was a 5/5 - the Seafood Pistolettes were so unique tasting and the flavor just burst in our mouths. The crab cakes were probably the best I've ever had - they were so fresh. As for my main, I got the Blackened Redfish, and it was delicious. It was so well seasoned and perfectly cooked. My friend also loved her jambalaya. The restaurant has a tavern vibe, so is very cozy and warm while also giving an authentic feel. The service was great - the food came out very quick and our server was lovely. This place is very historic as the slave trade took place here. There's a plaque outside the door if you'd like to read about it too. The inside is very cozy and feels like you're in someone's living room. I loved the style of this restaurant. I asked my server what her favorite thing to order was and she said a margarita and gumbo, so that's what I go. The drinks and food were good, and they came out quickly; the gumbo comes with fresh bread and was very flavorful. I haven't had bad gumbo on my food crawl I've been doing. The Original Pierre Maspero's is a must go for any New Orleans trip and for good reason. We were able to quickly get a table for lunch on a Saturday after walking in. The service is excellent, and the food and drinks are some of the best we've tried in New Orleans. The Mcqueen cup is Pierre Maspero's take on the classic New Orleans cocktail Pimm's cup. This drink is sweet, sour, and not too strong. We also appreciated that it was large. The blackened chicken alfredo and shrimp poboy were some of our favorite bites of this trip. The alfredo was rich and creamy, and the chicken was flavorful. The poboy had crispy friend shrimp and fresh veggies. The portion sizes are also huge, and well worth the prices. The bread pudding was delicious. Soft bread pudding paired with a sweet sauce served hot. It's a delectable treat for anyone with a sweet tooth. We cannot recommend the Original Pierre Maspero's enough and hope to come back soon. read more

I ordered a bowl of the gumbo, which was good though I had better this week. My wife got the shrimp po boy, which unfortunately was subpar. The bread was dry and not very fresh. What an incredible experience to end our NOLA trip with! First off our waitress Tiffany and the chef were incredible! The seafood pistolettes appetizer was so amazing I asked for a side of the sauce to dip my entree in. The Shrimp Poboy was delicious (bread was so light) and red beans and rice w/ fried chicken was fantastic. Apps and entrees alone had us leaving, almost rolling, very full out the door! Only reason why we got boxes were to enjoy the left over fries (with green goddess ranch and pistollete sauce) and beans and rice! Waitress took the order from memory instead of writing it down and she forgot the mayo my wife ordered with her roast beef po boy until after the sandwich was eaten. My group ordered: French onion soup - just okay. Not something they would order again. Roast beef Po Boy - just okay. Not something they would order again. Blackened chicken jambalaya - chicken was tender and flavorful but the rest of the dish was dry. Not something they would order again. My buddy and I got the shrimp and grits. The grits were dry, mealy and unseasoned (epic fail). I dont think any butter was in them. And they forgot to put the Tasso ham on there which is an integral part of this dish. When I asked why there was no ham, the waitress went back to the kitchen. Then she came back out and thoroughly examined my dish to make sure I wasnt lying because apparently the cook said he did put the ham on the dish. In all my years of eating at restaurants, I have never been treated like a liar. So the waitress brings out a dish with 2 little pieces of ham, but there were little bits of something like grits or other food on the ham. ???? My buddy said im not going to eat that because it probably hit the floor before they brought it out. I agreed. When the cooks are screwing up and are arguing with the waitress about it, it definitely seems possible. What an overall disappointment in so many ways. Unclear why they have 4 starts. read more
