Cooter Brown's is truly an Uptown New Orleans staple. This classic tavern and oyster bar is one of my go-to spots when I'm looking to just chill, grab a great drink, and enjoy solid New Orleans food in a laid-back environment. Located right at St. Charles & Carrollton on the streetcar line, it's super easy to get to and always buzzing in the best way. The drink options are endless--great cocktails, frozen margaritas, beer by the glass or pitcher, and a huge variety of beers to choose from. TVs are everywhere, making it a perfect spot to catch sporting events, meet up with friends, or just hang out solo. The vibe is low-key, casual, and welcoming--no frills, just a consistently good time. I also love that they're open 11 AM to 1 AM, seven days a week, which is clutch no matter the day or occasion. And finding out they've been around since 1977 just adds to the charm and legacy. This is an iconic sports bar. They have these wooden characterers bordering the entire bar from Marilyn Monroe to Mick Jagger to Elvis Presley etc, it's a really a neat unique aesthetic. I come here for the Irish channel special which is a corned beef sandwich, and probably the best I've ever had. They have a plethora of beers on tap, TVs galore and a really rad trivia night on Wednesdays. And especially great place to watch football during football seasons. You'll get to watch every game. And some of the best oysters in the city of New Orleans. This has been in my rotation for many, many years. Highly recommend! read more

In all the time I lived in NOLA I never ate here and I'm so glad that I did on this visit. Absolutely phenomenal, I definitely stuffed myself on the salad and oysters I barely had room for the chicken parm sandwich I forgot I ordered. Friendly service at the bar, you have to pick up your food orders and oysters yourself but no buggy. All the cutlery/con dominants are nicely packaged and organized at the end of the bar. We were looking for a seafood place in the area, and found this place on Yelp. All locals, and just we two tourists. Awesome beer selection, the back bar is loaded with craft beers. We had the seafood basket, which is loaded with catfish, oysters, shrimp and fries. 21 and over only. No table service, order your drinks at one of the bars, and your food at the kitchen. A must-go when attending classes at the CDP. Smoked wings, ribs or a burger... doesn't matter since you wont go wrong. Sides were amazing-my favorite are the hush puppies. Crispy outer shell with a warm soft cornbread in the middle addicting!!! I decided to try some picklejuice cocktail/shots- I meant to ask but Im going to assume it might be homemade. No manufactured taste. All homemade country goodness. Purchase their rubs or sauces, they travel well. I took 10 home in my luggage as Christmas gifts! The wings are delicious, the cheese fries are cheesy, and their brunch burger (not pictured) is my personal favorite menu item. The kitchen staff & bartenders are great as well. TL;DR Jerk manager ruins the vibe of a classic spot. This was one of my favorite neighborhood bars for years and years, loved the veggie burger and hanging outside with a pitcher of something and some friends. Thought it would be fun to bring some friends by after jazz fest, and we got our id's scanned at the door. The door guy was chill and normal, but the second we got in some surly, drunk looking british guy starts demanding our id's again, which we would've been happy to pull back out if the dude 1) didn't just look like a random bar patron and 2) wasn't immediately yelling in our faces about how he was the manager. Apparently he is, which is crazy I've never had problems coming here for like 10 years, but people like that aren't worth your money or your time, so we left, went somewhere else and had a good night. We made our way to Cooter Brown's for their Tuesday night raw oyster special, where you can score a dozen briny beauties for just $13--a deal so good it should be illegal (but thankfully isn't). Now, Cooter's is a no-frills, seat-yourself, fend-for-your-own-oysters kind of place, which suits me just fine. You belly up to the oyster bar, place your order, and get handed a buzzer that'll go off when your mollusks are ready. When I confidently ordered two dozen, the shucker shot me a look of a man who had seen things--"It's gonna be about an hour," he warned. Fair enough, Cooter. But our friends had wisely arrived earlier and already secured two dozen, so we engaged in a little strategic oyster-sharing warfare while waiting for ours. Divide and shuck, conquer and slurp. As for other food? Couldn't tell you. I was on a strict bivalve-only diet for the evening. Drinks? That's a separate mission--you order at the bar, and we opted for pitchers of Urban South's Holy Roller IPA at $23 a pop. Reasonable, but not exactly a steal. I briefly considered ordering Ghost in the Machine, but at $35 a pitcher, I decided my money was better spent on things like, oh, I don't know, another dozen oysters. The service was friendly, efficient, and oyster-hustling like pros, keeping the salty, slippery goodness flowing. There's also bike racks and outdoor seating if that's ya jam. Grand total for the night? $93 for two pitchers of IPA and two dozen fresh-from-the-Gulf oysters. A solid deal for a fun, casual night out. This was my first time at Cooter Brown's because I was craving some half priced oysters. I may have been the only one in the entire place that had never been there before. The bartenders were super friendly and recognized everyone who came up to the bar. I ordered a dozen oysters which were immediately shucked at the counter. There were fixings laid out so you can pick out what you like (mignonette, hot sauce, horseradish, crackers, etc). These oysters were probably the largest and most consistent I've had in New Orleans. Unreal! Apparently they bypass the middle man and get the oysters straight from the supplier. For $13 for a dozen (half price), of course I asked for another round. I was expecting them to be super greasy; they were perfectly breaded specimens of yumminess. The service was friendly and fast despite the crowds. Lots of beer choices. It's the perfect place to watch football and that definitely was going on both times we stopped by. This is a dive bar that appeals to the old school, South Sider (Chicago), Gen Xer, sporty girl in me. It's a throwback to all the bars that used to sponsor my Chicago Sport & Social Club teams (football, beach volleyball, and floor hockey). I like this place...a lot! I stopped in by chance late-night on February 2nd - only because it was open and nothing else around me was. I'm sooo glad I did!! It is a dive bar with good food and a great beer selection. The place is divey, but has a bunch of cool wood-carvings of celebrities from a bygone era. The crowd is an eclectic mix of: locals, college students (from Loyola and Tulane), professors, and alums. If you want food... go to the counter - off to the right. They give you a buzzer so you know when it's ready. I had a shrimp Po' Boy. It was solid. Next time I want to try the oysters which I hear are awesome! Everyone is friendly and prices are reasonable. Definitely a different way of doing things, but one of the best things we ate during our trip. On our last full day in town, we dragged ourselves out of bed and went looking for food near our airbnb. After something of a strange journey and turning away from a few other spots, we ended up at Cooter Brown's. I think the doorman should've explained as we walked in, but you can order drinks at the bar and then go to the kitchen to order food. There was a patio as well as a smoking section (?!) so we tucked ourselves in a booth in a back corner. My boyfriend had a brunch burger, which he reported was good. I ordered the gator Po'Boy and fries were separate so we split a basket. I'd never tried gator or a Po'Boy, but it was delicious! My first time visiting the restaurant. Atmosphere was fun. Loved all of the TVs that had Olympics and sports and movies on different channels. Bartender was spot on with keeping us going with our drinks and taking the dishes away when we were finished. This hurts. I have spent many an afternoon and evening at Cooter's. But the time has come to face reality. This place is terrible. The food has gone downhill along with the atmosphere and cleanliness. As I sat with a friend watching ball, we were agitated as the sound of annoying emo rock emanated from the speakers--not exactly the type of music one expects to hear at a sports bar. It's college football Saturday in the South, and the vibe is straight nerd. Next, we ordered food. The buffalo shrimp was nauseating, but we kept eating it so the rat running by our table wouldn't get any crazy ideas. Yes, you heard me, a RAT. Until this place makes a complete overhaul. I went here for the oysters and while they were fresh the uncleanliness of the restaurant ruined the entire experience. It is a self seating bar and most to the tables were dirty but the worst part was while eating I had a roach climb onto my shoulder and up my neck. I mentioned it to the busser and instead of addressing the problem he brushed it off. He stated that because the door is open roaches are likely to come inside. But under no circumstance would I ever want to eat or drink somewhere that would even allow the potential for a roach to come in. I don't ever plan to eat here again. read more

On Sunday, October 12, 2025, late afternoon/early evening, I ordered a hot sausage po-boy dressed with cheese and extra mayonnaise. I asked if it was Patton's (IYKYN), and I was told yes. I was so ready. Well, to my dismay and surprise, it lacked luster. The Po-boy did not look freshly made. The meat looked re-fried, burnt, and not hot. The cheese appeared to be old and had not been freshly melted from the grill. No extra mayo. It was dry. The only good thing was that the center of the bed was soft; the lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles were good. We waited too long to be that disappointed. I chalked it up to the fact that they were busy due to the game. I don't know, but it's a one-and-done for me. Cooter Brown's was a little off the beaten track on our latest visit to NOLA. The space is inviting and friendly. There is a separate ordering station for food and oysters and they even have a pool table. The vibe is a little divey but still quite lively. My friend ordered the oysters and liked them. They said the horseradish was strong. I ordered the mozzarella sticks and was disappointed. The breading on the mozzarella sticks was too thick and very, very salty. The marinara sauce on the side was very thick and chunky and also very salty. It was hard to dip the mozzarella sticks in it. I hope they can improve on it. We also ordered the catfish basket with fries. The fish was fried well, but the coating was a little thick and on the saltier side. Cornmeal coating would've worked better. Tartar sauce was very vinegary, it could have used a little bit more mayo and relish. Fries were crispy and fresh. The hall of famers on the wall were hilarious and gave us a chuckle. I would perhaps come back to try some of their other items, but they definitely have room for improvement as far as food is concerned. read more

Food was delish! We had the fish and shrimp basket (both with fries) and oysters. This fish was a large size and seasoned well. Cooked perfectly. If you like a little crunch on your fish let them know to fry it hard. shrimp basket was a nice size as well. I wasn't expecting that, but pleasant surprise on the portions. Oh and the fries were bomb!!! We didn't leave any dry behind! Seasoned well. Nice batter and fresh cut fries. Like the kind you make at the Friday night Fish Fry at Uncle Coleman's! We wanted to try the oyster sampler, but they didn't have all of them available we what's pictures are the locals (smaller oysters) and the Murder Oysters. Both really good. Atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed. Nice options on tap and draft for beer lovers. We had 2 ghost machines, but want to try their frozen margarita later. While sitting in the bar area we got to see the many drinks being made and I had to ask a couple of times, "what's that?" As the drink looked yummy! Went here to watch the Colts game while visiting NOLA and really glad we did. It's a great spot to go to watch games, especially with a group. You can open a tab at either bar and order food and drinks from them both. They have a stellar craft beer tap list; make sure you visit both bars because there are different taps at each bar. The servers are all friendly and knowledgeable about the tap offerings. The food is great, too. We had oysters, wings and a burger -- all fantastic. We will return our next trip to Nola! read more

This place is great. I was able to post up at the bar and watch several games, including my Raven's game I'm really good company. There was a great football loving crowd which was in the making for a beautiful Sunday. I had several drinks and some pretty tasty food, all for a decent price. I Ubered so I can't speak to the parking situation but my experience overall was great. Might I also add that the bathroom was pretty clean for a bar. So first the good... this is still a cool bar and is a good spot to enjoy whatever thing they are showing on the TV that unless it is rugby I don't care about. They still have a decent selection of beer but it isn't the crazy huge selection they used to have. They moved the bathrooms all around so now they are much larger than before but I do miss my old saloon swinging doors that the old bathroom had to access it. Well then now the bad.... Donkey Balls the new ownership got rid of the long time food vendors and did their own kitchen and while they kept mostly the same menu it isn't anywhere nearly as fantastic as it used to be and in fact it in many cases just isn't very good. They gimped up all the decorations and moved them all around.... They no longer have Creole Mustard like they had for decades before with the past owner. The menu is all changed up and moved about now but I initially thought, "at least they kept my Radiator Special po boy..." except now that po boy pretty much sucks and is nothing like what it used to be! It is so frustrating that they had to change EVERYTHING in the food category especially what WAS one of my PREVIOUS favorite po boys ever that they have just ruined! I even made the extra effort and tried to sample another one of my past favorites here with the roast beef poboy and it was served COLD with un-melted cheese... Please bring back the past long time food vendors that made exponentially better food that tasted like New Orleans food... which at this point probably isn't even possible anymore but I can hope and dream still... The food now tastes like somebody from Colorado trying to make a po boy... At least bring back the Creole Mustard!
