Your run of the mill Sushi place. Nothing too fancy but will do the trick if you're in the mood! The servers were extremely nice and welcoming.

Came to Sakana on a whim, and honestly this was some so-so sushi. Their fish doesn't taste particularly high quality. Their Tuna Sashimi wasn't good, it was a bit hard to chew. Their Salmon options tasted way better. No issues with service though, their staff all seemed very nice.

I ordered takeout here. For two people, we each ordered one roll and got the spicy tuna rice tots to share. They gave us utensils for one person in the bag...and indeed, the rolls were quite small and it was more of a one-person sized serving. The quality of the fish was delicious and it was plated nicely. I didn't like the texture of the rice tots themselves, though I liked the fish on top.

This was our 3rd time here and it's definitely my favorite sushi spot in the Somerville, Cambridge, Medford area. While it's a small restaurant with about 5 tables and 4 bar seats, we've never had to wait more than 10 min for a table on a Friday or Saturday night. Additionally, the food is always fresh and comes out quick. What I like so much about this place is the unique combinations of the sushi. Especially the Sakana, Hokkaido and Spicy Mango Avocado rolls. What we ordered: - Sakana Makimono: We get this every time. The jalapeño and crunchy sesame soy sauce are amazing - Hokkaido Makimono: We get this every time. The spicy yuzu miso sauce is delicious - Rocky Road Makimono: First time trying this and would make this a staple in our order - Hot Chili Maki: solid - Spicy Mango Avocado: love this simple unique roll - Spicy Crispy Shrimp: solid

Even though the place is pretty small and cozy, the wait goes by quite fast. My favorite was the torched raw scallop--so much flavor. We sat at the sushi bar so it was nice to see our food being made fresh.

If I had to choose a couple items for my last meal on Earth, sushi from Sakana would be on there. Sakana is a small gem that I found out about 2 years ago. I came here with a hungry friend and we ordered 5 rolls EACH. Yes, this is a small hole in the wall place and yes, it's a SUPER casual place. But I absolutely love coming here. Service is very attentive and the place is clean. My favorite rolls to get here are the Hokkaido and the Sakana, but every piece of fish that you put in your mouth from here is fresh. I have not had a bad experience and I hope it stays that way. Sakana is also very affordable (for sushi) and the quality is top notch. The place is definitely a no frills type of spot. There are plenty of street parking and is super accessible by bus/ a 10 minute walk from either Central/ Harvard Red Line. They also offer a few alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, and sake. Definitely come here and you will not be disappointed!

Standard, reliable sushi rolls, nothing crazy with affordable pricing for people who want sushi. I felt slightly disrespected by service, which I'll talk about in the latter portion of the review (this is where I deduct 2 stars). I am a big fan of having sushi mostly ungarnished to appreciate the fish on its own, but I branched out from my usual and wasn't disappointed. Soft shell crab (10/10): I love soft shell crab, the tobiko and eel sauce gave it a sweet and saltiness. Very standard roll. Sakana roll (9/10): I like this one a little less, just because I was overwhelmed by ~stuff~ but the chili oil crunch was a nice touch. I really loved how buttery the torched salmon was. Yellowtail roll (10/10): not much to say, standard and good. Service was subpar. There were two other tables in the restaurant who had walked in after I had sat down. When I was sat, I was not brought water until after the other tables had gotten it and after I had asked for it, and the first time I was greeted when I was asked if I was ready to order, which again, was after the other tables ordered. It was a disappointing and a bit offensive. I would order takeout here but probably not come back to the establishment itself. I try to separate service from the food, but it all felt a little rude and unwelcoming.

The sushi was very good and fresh. We had the snow mountain, unagi sashimi and the kampachi crudo. Parking was ok as long as u download the parking app. Overall we liked it.

Another hidden gem in the Greater Boston area! I came here for the first time recently and had a great first impression- the staff were extremely helpful and the fish was so fresh! We ordered the salmon salsa taro chip ($11), salmon oyakodon ($21), and chirashi donburi ($22). The server notified us that they were low on salmon but offered to replace the salmon in our appetizer with tuna. We enjoyed the tuna salsa. It had the perfect mix of fresh tuna pieces, crispy peppers, and the saltiness was just right. This dish did not skimp on the fish! The servers kept an eye on our plate and offered to get us more taro chips when they saw that we ran out. The taro chips were hardly salted at all but I liked how the starchiness and crunchiness balanced with the soft, savory tuna. I would totally get the salmon oyakodon again. The bowl was loaded with salmon roe which added so much fattiness and richness to everything! My favorite part was the seared salmon belly and its crispy, fragrant chili oil on top. The bowl didn't look super big at first but ended up being quite filling. There was just enough rice that every bite had salmon roe and tobiko. The chirashi bowl had a huge variety of fish, all of which were very fresh. The seared tuna with chili oil was, again, my favorite part of the bowl. The price point for the raw fish donburi is pretty comparable to what you'd get at other spots around the city. The vibes of the restaurant are homey while sleek. I highly recommend this spot!

Great small sushi restaurant right on Mass Ave in Cambridge. Specialty rolls such as Sakana, Rocky Road, and Crimson are really impressive with a variety of flavors and textures. Standard sushi such as salmon avocado also very good. Great service and great sake options as well. Small space but very cute and comfortable for a date night.

My experience here was pretty good. Host and server were really nice. They even accommodated switching out the shrimp items bc I'm allergic to shrimp. The sushi boat filled me up, everything tasted fresh and the presentation was nice. One thing I didn't like but totally out of their control was how close I was to the next table. I could hear the conversation next to me which was awkward. I would come back again.

Came here for lunch and were seated instantly. The lunch specials are super reasonable. We both got the sushi lunch ($16 each), which comes with miso soup, a salad, and five nigiri with a spicy tuna roll. Service was great and fast.

BLUF: Sad rolls and unfulfilling. We went to Dumpling House immediately after, to wash the disappointment out of our mouths. How misled we were when choosing Sakana. The high 4.5 star reviews and well lit photos really made us think we were choosing a quaint sushi shop in Cambridge. Their "signature rolls" had as much fish in it as supermarket sushi. No... that's not fair, supermarket sushi actually has more fish. The Rocky Roll had primarily cucumber, crispy shallots, covered in a mango sauce, and some slices of salmon that was touted to be on the roll too. The Spicy Crispy Shrimp, not spicy, not seasoned, not crispy shrimp. The toppings for the Chirashi was of poor quality. The egg was not made to order, it was cold and rubbery. The clam left a soapy taste. The sashimi pieces... meeeeehhhhhhh. The harshness of this review is not lost on me (we still ate a good portion of it. Thanks, sunk-cost fallicy), however, anyone who has ever ordered a restaurant's SIGNATURE roll expects it to be grandiose! Not worse looking and tasting than a simple California roll.

I personally love eating sushi because I love rolling around my bed and wrapping myself in blankets like a sushi roll. Honestly maybe I'll do it later when I get home, I don't have a date today. Anyways you didn't come here for a rolling around review you came here for a sushi review. I got the pork bun to start and I swear it must have came from an ancient boar, the portion was dinosaur sized. Definitely a steal, please don't raise the price I'm begging you don't take this away from me they already took the kids. I ordered the miso salmon sushi and it was absolutely fantastic. The staff was very apologetic about how I was the only one of 6 to have my order take a little while longer and I don't think they realized I didn't care too much. Maybe I would if I was retired and didn't understand the plight of the working man anymore. I intended on giving the restaurant 5 stars after eating, but the waitress saw me writing the review. I was gonna drop it to 4 for that reason because I thought it was funny but I think they deserved every one of my fun filled shining stars. Come here if you like sushi, it's ALMOST as good as the feeling of evading getting ticketed on the permit only parking spaces you'll need to park at.

The sake collection is excellent, and reason enough to go. The sushi is still very good but the nigiri is garnished with toppings like umami cherry and mint or house preserved yuzu. This is done beautifully but it causes the fish to be deemphasized. Little details like uneven cutting of a maki roll didn't impact the taste but lessen the beauty and the art that is sushi. For non-sushi the cabbage and the five-spice chicken were both amazing. The tomato zuke, a house cured hothouse tomato nigiri was very cool but make sure to use a little soy sauce. Final judgment - the space, the service, and the sake are all great. The sushi is very good but not as good as I remember and of course it's more expensive than it used to be.

Grabbed a table here for dinner one night and had a lovely experience. This place does get crowded…read moreso I would recommend reservations. Luckily the restaurant is split for a dine in and takeout area making it easier to wait for a table if needed. We ordered several items from the menu and found all had an air of freshness to them. I especially like the chicken karaage which came with a spicy mayo sauce. The chicken was fried well giving it nice crisp without feeling heavy on the oil. The dipping sauce was also a nice added touch complementing the flavors of the chicken. For rolls I ordered the tomato zuke, seared avocado, shiitake, and tuna taku. Interestingly, the tomato was my favorite. What an innovative way to use tomato that felt flavorful and mimicked the texture of a tuna based roll. I also liked how the avocado was seared with some sea salt - it gave it a nice balance of roasted and salty with just a little rice. For the shiitake, I enjoyed how the mushrooms were prepared the most and would have likely been more ok to eat those on their own rather than in a sushi roll. While I was the most excited about the tuna take, it felt a little more basic to me after having the more innovative vegetarian sushi first. The combo of crunchy and soft from the roll was a bit confusing. The takuan felt more minced and so you'd have a soft bite of the tuna mixed with more crunchy bits of the takuan, but since it didnt seem balanced it felt off from a texture perspective. However, this is also a personal preference and the ingredients individually were all super fresh. Our server was also super friendly and very on top of our ask to let us know which items had shellfish. She consistently checked in with us and on the kitchen to ensure there weren't any issues with my food allergy. I very much enjoyed coming here and would definitely come again. While it was busy, the food still came out quickly and it was still quiet enough that you could have a conversation with your table. In general this place makes a great date spot or place to come with friends.
