I have been going to Eclipse Salon for about 2 years now and I think it's about time for an overall review. Gary and his team make an effort to communicate and understand what you want. With that, they tell you what's the best way to execute your vision. 1st hair appointment: Gary took my recently dyed dark brown/ black hair (from a different salon) to a pastel lavender color in basically a day. -- Pricing was $600 for this app. They offered me tea and refreshments. Those 8 hours flew by. Fast forward to today, I probably made at least 10 appointments with Gary for my hair. I do not regret any of them. Reasons to come here: This salon uses Olaplex Cares for the integrety of your hair Honest opinions/ criticisms Open to different ways of communication (calls/ text) Price quotes are what you expect if you love your hair and don't want to burn it all off I honestly have no idea where those 1 star reviews are coming from. From my first experience here to now, there has not been an appointment where I left disappointed, feeling disrespected, or basically negative. First off, I want to say this is best hair color I've ever had! I've been wanting to get white/platinum blonde hair for a very long time, and was never able to achieve this color in the previous salon that I used to go to. I booked an appointment with Gary, after seeing all of the great results pictured on here. When I got there, Johm ended up doing my hair, but this was fine because I couldn't be happier with the results. He took the time, being patient and helpful the entire time, and explained what he was doing step by step. He went above and beyond to get me my dream hair color, and was great for the entirety of the session. I also greatly appreciate the fact that he took the time to listen to my concerns and to achieve what I've asked for, instead of pushing colors I didn't like just because that was easier (like what my old stylist did. -_- ) Overall, I was ecstatic with the results and would only trust John or Gary with future touch ups/ dye jobs. I highly recommend reading some other non-4 star reviews before coming here. I was recommended here by an acquaintance. I've been going to San Jose to get my hair done for years, then took a break during Covid and found it hard to motivate myself to drive back down there. It's pretty difficult to find someone in SF who does good work on asian hair. I will say that the result Gary produced was good, not too bad. He was very fast at foiling and the color turned out nice, so I have no complaints about that. However, the process to get there was quite uncomfortable and his workflow is sloppy. My biggest concern with Gary was the way he brushed my hair right after it was bleached. I have always gotten my hair done with women, and maybe since he isnt a woman, he doesn't understand the relationship we have with our hair. While my hair was wet and freshly bleached, he used a regular paddle brush and AGGRESSIVELY brushed my hair. My heart dropped after seeing how much blonde hair was getting pulled out. And he would even try to hide it by covering it with a towel and running to the back to clean out the brush. I have NEVER experienced this kind of treatment before out of my almost 10 years of getting my hair bleached. Gary, please consider using a wide toothed comb and gently detangling hair. Those blonde strands could have been saved. Secondly, when I first sat in the chair, I told him I did not want anything more than 1 inch being cut off. After he brushed off all my hair, he asked if he can cut off 4 or 5 inches. WHAT?! Is this because you just pulled off all my hair so now it looks like it actually needs a haircut?? This actually annoyed me quite a bit. Third. Another review mentioned how the hair washing process was uncomfortable. I get what was meant by this. My neck was very sore, the positioning was not ergonomic by any means, and he was very rough with the washing. It is not like any other hair washing experience I've had, even at a cheap Chinatown haircut place. They're usually quite relaxing, but this experience was just rough all around and left my neck very tired. I also remember water splattering around a lot on my face. And since he was sooo rough with my hair, it ended up being a tangled mess. Thus, he would have to aggressively brush to detangle. At other salons, they keep your hair quote detangled during the whole washing process to make it easier to brush afterwards. Clearly, his workflow is not very high quality. As a result, my hair had a decent color BUT you can tell the ends were very straggly. You can tell there were lots of split ends from the breakage that occurred. I had to trim it again when I got home. The haircut he gave me was quite half-assed anyway. This experience was way too traumatizing and I would not recommend anyone to go here for blonde hair/balayage/babylights type of work. I will be driving back to San Jose for a slightly better price but higher quality work. Honestly, I'd pay like under $150 for this type of experience, including the SF inflation rate (Orange County has extremely high quality hair for like $200 across the board yall, I used to pay $140 for mine in a high-end salon when I lived there and my friends there still pay only this much). I think anything less than $150 would be a fair price for the overall janky-ness of this salon--But I paid 3 times the price, and I think we all deserve a more enjoyable experience. read more

I made a same day appointment with Eclipse at around 10:30AM. I was warmly greeted and told to come around 12:30. If you have perm hair like me make sure you always tell your stylist. Gary said he could take care of me so with a leap of faith I booked the appointment. Parking is a bit of a nightmare in Polk street so I was like 10min late, however, Gary just saw me, greeted me with a smile and promptly seated me. He asked me how I wanted my hair, listened and sent me to wash my hair with John . OMG John gives the best hair wash ever!! He took a while with the shampoo and gently massage my scalp. I was like please never stop! After that Gary cut my hair exactly how I wanted it ( keeping my hair as long as possible and with minimal layering). He had other customers too, but he kept telling he hadn't forgotten me :) so nice. Because perms aren't supposed to be blowed dried, he put me under an infrared heating machine then use a diffuser to give my curls an extra humph. The result? Perfect. See pics for a visual experience. If you want perm tips leave me a message :) In summary, why should you choose Gary as your hairstylist ? Simple, He... 1. Asks 2. Listens 3. I had been meaning to get my hair done before the start of the semester, and of course I just had to wait until last minute. So finding a good place to fit me in asap was difficult. But just when I was about to give up hope, I made a call to Eclipse Salon and they made everything so easy for me! I talked to Gary, sent him a pic of my hair and told him what I wanted, and he took me on my next available day. The experience was absolutely amazing. This was my first time spending so much time at a salon (9 hours!) and it was nothing but comfortable and satisfying. I was on my phone the whole day, and it was not a problem for me to just sit there and charge it when I needed to. Spending hours on end did have me starving at times, but I was able to eat in the middle of it as well. The whole time I was there, I felt at home. I made an appointment on Thursday wanting to have a new hair style. The amazing girl on the phone was extremely helpful! I told her I wanted to have my hair colored and maybe a cut. I was booked for it on Sunday @12! I was told to send a photo my my hair and see what they are going to deal with when I go in. Sunday rolled around and I entered the salon with the same girl on the phone to greet me! She told me to wait a second and John would be right with me but before I sat down, he said he was ready for me. I told him what I want and he listened. I honest just want a change in my hair. He gave me suggestions and told me which would be better. I had no expectations going in so I said, do whatever you want! He told me right in the beginning that the process would be long and I understand that. We decided to do ash blonde balayage! John explained everything to me and answered all my questions. I felt like a VIP! At one point the salon was just me and another female client, but John focus all on me! The other staffs were all talkative and we had a nice chat! I've been a client of Gary's for two years! I've gotten partial highlights each time. He did a great job each time. He knows what he's doing and he knows what looks good for your skin tone/hair color. You pretty much have to trust him LOL cuz he doesn't have color samples to show! You kinda just describe what you want and if you try to show pictures like I did, he'll pretty much give you his honest opinion if it'll look good or if not, describe something else. I recently walked out of a highlights appointment with Gary, and it was more subtle than I had in mind, though the color was very pretty. Gary was kind enough to let me book another appointment so we could add more, brighter highlights for no additional cost. Now I'm super pleased! The other staff members are friendly too! The BEST place to change the hair color!! I will definitely come back if I want to do my hair again!! A week ago, I went to this salon to change my hair color. My hair was faded ash-violet from previous coloring and I had long (probably 4-5 inch) dark root. I had consulted with the colorist Sohea before I went to the salon. Gary is the best thing that ever happened to my hair! and I consider him a friend after seeing him for so many years. I've been going to Gary since about year 2000, so long ago I can't remember exactly when I first walked into his salon. I was referred by a friend at my work and learned these referrals had been going on for some time, so that many of the women I worked with were going to Gary. Gary always pays attention to what I want and does a fabulous job. He does my cuts and coloring and NEVER has let me down. I get compliments on my hair. The color is always perfect. The cut is so carefully done that it falls right into place when windblown, as happens all the time in SF. He's very generous with his time, advice, product offerings. I've learned a lot about how to better style and care for my own hair. I noticed the review of someone who says she had a bad experience and it mystifies me. I cannot judge what someone else says in a review. But I can say this with confidence: Gary was once acknowledged in an industry magazine as a master colorist. I used to worry about damaging my hair with coloring, yet even though I color several times a year, my hair is always soft and healthy. My hairstylist/colorist was John and he lightened and blended my previous bleach hair a whole lot better so as it grows out, it will grow out evenly and have a more natural look. I wanted a Smokey Lavender-like color and he delivered with way better results than I could of imagined. It has so many different purple tones, it tends to change with the lighting or whether it is curled of straight. A long overdue review. I have been on quite a hair journey at this salon. In a year and a half, I've gone from black and waist-length to blonde to purple to a short silver bob with a side shave, to pink with a baby bang, to the nearly white shade that I am now and will continue to be while I grow my hair out again--and then maybe forever. Everyone at Eclipse is great. Gary and Franny are amazing, and have each done my hair multiple times with excellent results. I'm pretty sure Deisy is kind of a hair genius. She's lifted my virgin roots to a perfect snow white with no noticeable damage, concocted exactly the dusty shade of cool pink I asked for, and has given me the cutest haircuts to set off the colors each time. Eclipse is not cheap, but you'll leave happy. If you don't, talk to Gary and he'll make it right. I'm new to the greater bay-area and was searching for a salon to chop my Asian hair. I actually didn't find Eclipse via Yelp, I found it googling for pictures of bob's and came across photos of beautiful bob's done by Gary. Definitely lived up to the hype that other reviewers posted. It's a small salon, but they get the job done! I was running late and called to let them know. I thought I was going to need to reschedule, but they said it was cool. So, 20 minutes late to my appointment, Gary worked his magic: he chopped my butt-length hair and turned it into a gorgeous bob that I've been getting complements on ever since. Gary and Alisa did a great job on my hair. I have natural black hair so getting blue balayage was a big deal. They bleached my hair and did a black and blue color melt which turned out really good. Every one in the salon is really friendly and focused on giving the client what they want. It was a little pricey compared to estimates I got from other salons but Gary was the only one who promised me the results I wanted and he delivered. I had been wanting to do something different with my hair for the longest time and finally set up an appt for my 26th birthday. I was a bit hesitant because of the amount of colors and maintenance required for such a drastic change, but after showing Deisy some pictures and telling her my vision, she knew exactly what I wanted without having to say much. She made me feel at ease through the entire process, as she explained every step and talked me through each process as she was doing it. Sohea was so helpful and friendly. I scheduled my appointment last minute and she offered to come in on her day off and spent the ENTIRE day doing my hair (~5 hours!) and even offered me snacks for lunch. She really is super sweet and knowledgeable in what she does. Highly recommend her if you're looking into getting an ombré or balayage. Everyone here is amazing!!! I finally found my hair salon after living in the Bay Area for 9 years. It's expensive but worth the price. Great colorists. Specifics below. ---- Color - They really take the time to figure out what will work for your skin tone and hair type. The color last for months, and they give tips on how to keep it lasting even longer. I had people asking me if I just got my hair done constantly, even 9 months later. I deep condition occasionally so that may help. Hair - I judge stylist by how the hair grows. I hate when a haircut looks good the first month and then loses its life comlletely. At this salon, they have really good technique, so it just grows well. I only need to come it when I start getting split ends months later. Everyone is awesome from a technical perspective and personality wise. They're talented, extra friendly, and fun people. I've had John (color + cut), Franny (cut), and Gary (color) and Vic (color) work on my hair. I'm not super worried when they hand me off for parts of the process. read more

If you haven't already it's a MUST to try this salon! The first thing that impressed me was their staff. HUGE shoutout to John and Franny for making me feel more than welcome and comfortable. I rarely trust anyone with my hair but they have proven to be more than excellent at what they do. I got exactly what I asked for and they guided me through the whole thing. A month later and this is still one of the WORST haircolor experiences I have ever had. You see the haircolor in the profile photo? This salon should be EMBARRASSED to charge $300+ tip for that nasty color. It is everything I did not want. It is brassy, there is zero contrast, there is zero ash, there is zero icy blonde. Refer to photos in my previous reviews. Now it is growing out and will look horrible at roots because they bleached my entire head. I wake up every day hating it, but I cannot get it fixed yet because it cost so much money and my hair is now all dried out. I cannot believe Gary had the nerve to bleach my entire head. He did not pay attention and I had to waste time going back. For what I paid, it is APPALLING that the color looks like something I could get from a student salon or could have done myself with a $10 box from the drugstore!!!! AND NOTE: Gary is claiming I was HAPPY the first time I left the salon - I WAS NOT. I knew the color was wrong before they even finished drying it. I expressed this at the time, and they said "give it a week and let us know." Well, I already knew, which is why I texted back TWO DAYS LATER and told him to rebook me for the correction. I then came back in as soon as I could - one week after initial appointment because I was traveling for work. Gary tried to delay the appointment a few days, and I said "no - I want to get this fixed". The photos speak for themselves: instead of excuses Gary should be ashamed he is charging $300+ for this kind of ugly dye-job. And they rushed the "correction". Further, he is claiming that the initial color was beautiful, however, when I went back for the correction he said it made me looked "washed out". So which is it?? And no, my crown was NOT ORIGINALLY BRASSY because I had not had my hair highlighted for SIX MONTHS and my natural dark blonde color had grown out at the roots. So he cannot blame previous hair salons for what he did to MY NATURAL COLOR. read more

Over the years, my perspective of having a master stylist service me has changed. I've learned that while I love my hair, it will GROW back. I guess that maturity has finally lent me perspective that it is not life and death! LOL. I've grown to love supporting up and coming stylists and watching them grow. Most have the hunger and the drive to please. With that said, I came back to Gary's salon in May 2013 because I met one of his hairstylists Franny (aka Fanny) outside of the salon. Her aesthetic is a little retro glam with urban street style (say what!) and the girl is upbeat and can make conversation with a ROCK. She took this almost 40 year old with shoulder length, Asian hair from eh to WOW with a very short, playful cut. She takes her TIME and is meticulous (not as lightening fast as Gary). What I appreciate about GARY is that when I made my appt in MAY, he did ask me if I wanted to have a MASTER stylist work on my hair...and when I arrived, he did mention that he read my 2006 yelp review. So, I know that he listens...and that made me smile on the inside. All the stylists seem competent, friendly and aim to please. Plus, the prices are still SUPER affordable. I just happen to love my Franny...and I know that other clients do, too...but seriously, she better not start getting too many clients because then, I will have to fight for appointments and that would make this client very unhappy! Sohea and Gary did a fantastic job with transforming my black hair. This was a graduation present to myself and I've been wishing for colorful hair. We couldn't decide whether to do purple/lilac or rose gold, and Gary created a beautiful color melt of midnight blue/black to purple/lilac to rose gold.
