I walked into the salon not really knowing what I wanted, just that my DIY color experiments hadn't exactly gone as planned. I'm always trying to cover my grey while getting that "I know it looks bleached, but it's what I'm going for" white-blonde tone, and no matter what I did, it always ended up a little too yellow or uneven. From the moment I sat down, Nicole just got it. She listened, explained what was actually happening with my color, and somehow managed to fix everything in one session. The end result was exactly what I'd been screwing up at home: natural, bright, with an amazing blue-tone rinse. The vibe of the whole salon is equally chill and laid-back but still professional. Everyone's friendly without being pushy, and there's this sense of actually knowing people that you don't see much anymore. People drop in just to say hi while everyone is working, which tells you a lot about the kind of place it is. I just had to finally cut off all my hair today due to coming into this place, ECO colorLab, for a simple grey touch-up that went very wrong. They, Ashley, and the owner that got involved were trying to fix Ashley's lousy dye job, and in the process, the process applied to my hair was to strip the color twice; it had to be redone because it didn't work the first time. I am unclear what was used on my hair, but I lost a lot of hair in the process and afterward. The claims are organic and ammonia-free, yet my hair would not have been damaged to the point of no option other than cutting it off because of the ongoing knotting and breakage. I went to an "organic" place because my hair was fragile, and I was giving it a break. I was very clear about this from the get-go. Ashley had colored my hair at another salon, a non-organic color, and my color turned out great. read more

I called Nicole, the owner to make an appointment and she booked me with Ashley. She said she was going to put me down for a $500 - $600 treatment and that it wouldn't be that price yet, she just had to block for the amount of time so that we could have the time to discuss what I wanted. She said when I arrive to tell Ashley my budget and we can figure out a price. When I got to my appointment I told Ashley what I wanted and my budget for $350. Ashley said $400 including everything and I agreed. At the end of the treatment I learned that $400 was not including tip. It is the most I've ever paid for highlights. After I left, Ashley texted me asking me to leave a review because the owner was really upset with her for not charging me $600!!! And honestly, I wasn't happy with my hair. I asked her to highlight my darker hair to compliment my natural color and I left with fully bleached ends, not much dimension at all. And where the bleach is applied at the top, it's blotchy, it is supposed to be blended. It took me years to grow my hair out to it's natural color, and now I have to wait years again. Bleach is not temporary. I am always willing to pay for quality and this was not that. On top of it they wanted to charge me $200 extra and I felt like Ashley was trying to guilt trip me when she reached out to me asking to leave her a review because of this. Again, I told her my budget. If she told me $600 I would've walked out the door. I'm sorry that this isn't a positive review but I wanted to share my experience honestly. read more

Nicole is allergic to chemical smells and because of that she left a very successful salon in Beverly Hills to pursue her dream to only use organic products to keep her own body away from chemical smells which were making her sick - thus opening up a salon in Venice years ago to make that dream a reality. I have not cut my long hair in over 4 decades and had several chemical treats done to it. But after a while it takes its toll on the hair and started to break from all the chemicals on my hair. Then all the blow drying and the chemicals on my hair made my hair very dull and dry. No matter how much I tried to condition it at home it was always dry and not shiny. I was desperate to find an solution where I could still have my trademark long hair and not to have it become brittle and break off. I love everything about this salon, namely Nicole, Candice and the organic, eco-conscious ingredients used. Candice wowed me with a relaxing mini organic facial yesterday, and I'm still beaming with pretty. My skin looks and feels unbelievably healthy. She asked me a lot of questions about my skin regimen and offered some helpful tips - one being to DRINK MORE WATER! After politely inquiring as to whether or not I'd like to give her eyebrow mastery a chance, I finally caved and am so glad I did. Having not touched my brows for YEARS, I must say, they look fabulous after a few plucks. She's a doll, and I'll definitely be carving out more pretty time with her in the future. Nicole will tell you if your hair is unhealthy, needs a trim and if your color looks like shit. She's honest and awesome and is one of the only stylists who's respected my hair. I went in for a trim late last year, which she executed perfectly. My hair is thin and fine, but for some unknown reason, stylists LOVE the ole razor cut and layer mess look on me. This makes absolutely no sense. I'm pretty easygoing, but I always specify "no layers." I did not have to tell Nicole this. She knew exactly what my hair needed, including a toner to even out my platinum highlights with my dirty blonde roots. I didn't even realize how shabby my mane looked until she twirled my around in my chair and forced me to see the back of my head. Wow. Get it together, Lauren. Aside from the talented, lovely ladies working the salon, the space is pretty rad. It's nestled in a loft with a view of trendy Plantation Design on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Space is tight, but it's charming and comfortable. I hate the feeling of eyes and judgment when I enter a salon. This does not happen at Evolution. And the products. Oh, the products. Let me tell you why: Not only was she very professional and fast about getting back to me with appointment times, but the salon itself was very clean and I was pleased with the atmosphere. It's quite professional, unique, and it doesn't smell of strong chemicals. The real magic, however, is with Tina and her talent. She not only gave me an amazing cut - just what I asked for - but she's intuitive, polite, and upbeat. She's also somehow able to translate my vague, jumbled terms into a glamorous, yet everyday and easy-to-manage style. I didn't realize how tired I looked until she finished with me :) Here's the best part; I specialize in Natural Beauty, namely "clean" facials and energy healing. I have not dyed my hair in a very long time due to what I know about how toxic hair color is and the environment we go to to receive the treatment. I bought a deal from this place bc I needed a quick trim before going away for the weekend and couldn't get to my normal girl over in Beverly Hills. I got there 10 minutes before my appointment and after about 35 minutes had gone by and I still wasn't sitting in the chair I left. The girl that was to do my cut wasn't even halfway done with the GUY that was in her chair yet. IMO, first impressions are everything and a first time client that is waiting 25 mins to even be seated isn't OK in my book. This place wasn't very easy to find either given it's at the top of a furniture shop. Learned my lesson. I'll drive my butt over to my chic in the BH, even if it's a quick last minute cut. read more

Being eco-friendly and conscientious with my food choices is one battle, but the harder battle, for a woman especially, is avoiding the crapload of chemically-laden personal care, makeup, and hair color products cluttering the shelves of the majority of stores in this country. I thought if I wanted less toxic hair color, I was relegated to Shades salon in Beverly Hills, but thankfully I heard about Nicole at Evolution Salon Gallery, and now, I don't need to deal with the attitude that Shades gave me ever again. Nicole gave me the best haircut of my life. For once, my ends look lovely sans blow dryer and flat-iron. My color isn't perfect, but that is my own fault for using Naturtint's boxed mahogany shade for a year. Her no drama attitude, willingness to squeeze me in on short notice, skill with her scissors, and super easy off street parking make her shop a no brainer. Also the products are all organic and for guys that ride, she also rides and understands how to make it all work when you take off your helmet. Always quick with a joke or opinion and the beverage of your choice, this is a nice respite from the faux barbershops that have popped up on every corner. I'm so glad I found Nicole. As I guy, I didn't think that much about haircuts. However, after going to Nicole I have people complimenting my hair cut. I always really liked how she cuts me, but I've also never been complimented on my hair cuts before. I never even tell her what to do. I don't know if thats good or bad for her, but she certainly has talent for the right cut for the person. Her location in Venice is laid back, very comfy and not a stuffy salon. It's Venice...right at the beach, so a laid back style works here. There's no overdressed women carrying toy dogs and wearing big sunglasses asking "where's the valet parking?". It's not that kind of place. It's a really enjoyable experience and I look forward to my visits with her. After a long exhaustive search to find the perfect non toxic salon and color, I stumbled across Nicole. At the time my hair was absolutely fried. I had tried every non toxic at home option as well as striking out with non toxic salon color. My hair was turning into a brassy straw like brown with white roots. nicole completely transformed my hair to a shiny raven brown within one visit. The longer I have gone to her for cuts and color the healthier and prettier my hair has become. Also we use no "lift" on my hair to cover the greys so that my hair is not being damaged whatsoever when I get color done. This is the best color I have ever had, which is amazing because the color is so non toxic I was able to color my hair throughout my pregnancy, while breast feeding, and was even able to hold my newborn baby while she colored my hair! I have recommended her to several friends and she seems to have the perfect sense of what looks most beautiful. I swear by her! Nicole is amazing!!! I ran to her after someone else made my hair waaayyyy to dark and then tried to fix it by highlighting it and then coloring over brown. I wanted an auburn color. The color I was left with was mousy and not me. Nicole squeezed me in the day I called and fixed my hair that night. I am so thankful I found her. She took her time to really listen to exactly what I wanted and worked her magic to fix it. I loved chatting with her and the relaxed feel of her work space. My hair was the exact color I had wanted from the beginning of my fiasco. She is genius. It's hard to find someone you can trust with something as important as hair color, and I fully, 100 percent trust her. Def go to Nicole for your hair color. I'm hate to do this, but I must. Horrible experience. This review is mostly for the junior stylist. I came in with super healthy natural blond hair, which I simply wanted only a few highlights on top. Nothing major, so any junior should be able to handle this. I walked out 5 hours later with my hair color looking exactly the same, except totally damaged. As in chunks broke off and frazzled ends. This is what I was trying to avoid by seeking out ammonia free. Obviously it can still do damage. Nicole could see how unhappy I was. I wrote to her, and she offered to fix it. I could tell she was a little annoyed, and she reminded me that I did pay for a junior stylist, so I couldn't expect senior stylist results... This place has really great reviews so I trusted that their vetted junior stylist would know how to do a simple highlight. She argued a little that it shouldn't be damaged bc she didn't bring the color through my already (still healthy) colored ends, but she actually did. She even put me under heat. Recipe for damage. I came in for Nicole to fix it, which she was nice enough and did what she could , but you can't really fix damaged hair. I guess I was most annoyed about the fact that she wouldn't admit that it's damaged, just "dry". My hair had to be cut as well to try and cut off some damage. In the end I walked out with my hair re-highlighted (still can't tell) trimmed and a conditioning process. She was also nice enough to give me some free shampoo and conditioner from her line. In the end I still had to go somewhere else to get them to try and cut my hair again. The cut Nicole gave me was a super unflattering shape and length that hit right at the shoulder and flipped out like the Brady bunch. I had to pay to go elsewhere to cut my hair to chin length, and had to get layers (which I really don't want) to try and get some fried parts removed. It's still not great, but the new stylist really took her time to cut out as much as she could and re-shape it. I have naturally wavy hair, and it won't even curl anymore. My hair is still damaged, looks like the same color, and now I have a bob that I was forced into. All this time, effort and money, and I came here bc I wanted more natural processing to avoid precisely this. :( I also can't re-color my hair to avoid more breakage. Nicole was nice, and she did try to remedy the situation, although giving excuses for the junior stylist. I'm sure she does a good job, but my experience has been so bad, my hair is shit now, so I just couldn't NOT write a review. I thought about just dropping it, but I did pay for this service and I'm super unhappy. Bad hair just in time for the holidays, yay!! read more

I am usually not the type to post about my experiences on Yelp, but I do check the site regularly to find highly ranked places around LA. As a New York transplant, it's been difficult to find a good hairdresser that I trust. Justine at Evolution Salon Gallery has been the perfect fit for me. She recently moved to this spot from another salon in Santa Monica (I almost had a breakdown when I called a couple of weeks ago to book an appointment and that salon told me she left). After some using my Google skills, I found her and Evolution. I love that they use all organic products that are healthy for your hair. The salon is laid back and unpretentious and just had a cool Venice vibe without trying too hard. Justine keeps the conversation flowing, but isn't a Chatty Cathy. She is friendly and attentive and just fun to talk to while you're getting your cut. I appreciate her suggestions, especially when I was feeling that my hair had been pretty blah. Under an hour in the chair and some long layers, my cut and style was perfect and exactly what I wanted. The true test for me is being able to recreate the look at home, and I have to say that my hair is cut so well that I can let it air dry and wear it out with very little effort.
