Long story short: my car starting making a really loud noise, I brought it in to my usual repair shop and they quoted me $1100 in exhaust repairs. I brought it in to Economy Muffler. Twenty minutes (i'm not kidding, I had to wait less than a half hour) and only $160 later the problem was fixed (obviously this will vary by person and problem). The service and work done is impeccable. You don't need to call around to four different shops to find a place that does good work for the right price, you just need to go to Economy Muffler. read more

Big fan. There are many things I understand. Cars has never been one of them. Brought my car in here because it was getting louder by the day, but the motor seemed fine, so, by process of elimination, guessed that it must be the muffler. They gave it a quick inspection, came back out and instructed me to head immediately to the auto parts store down the block where I could purchase any of the five quarts of oil my car appeared to have lost. Turns out I have an oil leak, and driving without oil makes one's car cranky. No charge for the advice. Killer shop. Dropped by at 10:30 on a Wednesday to have them give an estimate on welding back together a partially cut catalytic converter. They were able to put it up on a lift and knock it out in 30 minutes. Not sure if I just got lucky or these guys are that fast but even if you can't get it addressed immediately, I'd recommend this shop for your business. read more

I've come here over a number of years, and again today. Still a great place. When you select a good car, take care of it, it takes care of you. But eventually MN salt gets to the undercarriage. Before you spend tons on replacing your exhaust system COME HERE. Often it's just a couple of parts of your system causing the problem, and they will let you know what to do to get it in shape. They are reasonable, know what they are doing, and do good work fast. Years ago I was surprised (and a bit skeptical) about the no frills yellow building, the no appointments, all of it really. They convinced me. Today in the shop at the same time as my Mitsubishi, there was a Mercedes, a Toyota, and a Ford. Do yourself a favor, check 'em out. Came here on 1/7/2017 to get a muffler delete on my BMW 335i. Honest, fast and transparent. See photos I uploaded on yelp for this shop! They are pretty busy with customers coming in steadily and the work done is very fast. Most customers are in and out within 20 minutes. Note: they run on first come first serve system. Good thing the longest wait is only about 40 minutes. Love the fact that in the waiting room you can see the work being done. Also the staff there Xoua and Jason are both very talkative and friendly. They invited me to the lift area several times to confirm the work being done and I am ok to proceed. read more

We have a '97 Saturn wagon that was gifted by a friend, because my wife has been helping her out with computer stuff, and helped her buy a new car. And the Saturn was on its last legs. Most of the problems we've been able to deal with, but then the tailpipe started separating, and the thing sounded louder than a Harley driving down the street. I first went to Le's down the road. They were booked for two weeks, and suggested I go up to Economy Muffler on University, between Lexington and Victoria. Finally got there today, there was a short wait, and within 45 minutes they'd diagnosed and fixed everything. It was more than a separation between the manifold pipe and tailpipe, but the manifold pipe was also busted, and the muffler was shot. They quoted me a price after a quick look, and when I looked pained, dropped the price down ~$50. Really great service, competent mechanics who know their shit, and not unreasonably priced. If I'd taken it to the new MC Auto, it would've been twice as expensive. So, if you have exhaust/muffler issues, I highly recommend these guys. read more

No nonsense place, they get the job done quick. Don't go here if you want to be pampered by the staff. I could see how some may find this place "sketchy", but really it's just some welders/mechanics fixing exhausts at break neck speeds. They don't bother with the presentation of the place, and I suppose that's how they make it so cheap. They focus on fixing stuff quick. In and out in under an hour (arrived around 8:45am on a Tuesday), $20 to weld a pinhole in an exhaust pipe, and a chair to sit in in a no-frills waiting area. You can see into their work area from the waiting area and go out and take a look at your car yourself after they come back with a diagnosis if you want to. They even take American Express, which isn't especially common with smaller auto shops. Can't complain one bit - honest folks, quick work, great value. First come, first served, as other reviewers have mentioned - it keeps things moving with minimal downtime, which keeps costs super reasonable. Could be worth stopping by if you need something other than classic muffler/exhaust work done - there's a chance they can do that too, or they can refer you to one of the multiple shops nearby with other specialties. Also there's a sweet dog that mostly just sleeps in a chair behind the counter. Gotta love a good shop dog. read more

Great no-nonsense staff & mechanics with reasonable cost & estimates. I went in to get repairs on exhaust manifold & catalytic converter which had fallen off my car. Happy with the repairs except for two big issues. 1: Despite giving them my phone number, nobody ever called to tell me the job was done. I called an hour before closing to find out it had been waiting for me for hours. 2: Smelled something burning later on, was worried I had even more problems. I went there after getting a bid from Midas to repair my exhaust system on my 2000 Lexus which had a hole in the converter. I was told that the whole exhaust system would need replacing at a cost of $1670.00. After going to Economy Muffler, they were able to replace the converter, a couple of gaskets, repairs some sensors and replace a small section of the pipe while I waited at a cost of $450.00. Couldn't have been more disappointed in my experience. Upon arriving in the middle of the day the employee wouldn't even look up from their phone to speak with me. I asked if I could get a cat back exhaust system installed designed for my vehicle - the employee simply said we don't do that because we've never had luck with them. Takes too much time. Again all while not looking up from the video they were watching on their phone. I would expect this treatment from a young kid but not from a business. read more

I read all the great reviews and headed to St. Paul to the shop. A young man quickly put my vehicle on the hoist and took a look. He came and got me and explained it wasn't the muffler, but the exhaust manifold. I asked if they could repair it, but they aren't set up for manifold work. He dropped my vehicle, backed it out, and sent me on my way. He put my vehicle on their hoist, diagnosed the problem, communicated like a pro, and then sent me on my way - without charging me. I admire it when people have what they do down as cold as these guys do. Economy Muffler is a no-BS, no-frills, no-name-brand oasis of exhaust system repair. No appointments either -- first come, first served -- but that's cool because they churn cars in and out of there like lightning. I was fourth or fifth in the queue right after it opened at 8 this morning and was still on my way (quietly) in about 75 minutes. They've done three or four jobs for me and my sense is they fix only what needs fixing and no more. The work is solid and the prices fair. I brought my car in on a saturday morning 30 minutes after they opened. They are first-come-first-serve and I had three people in front of me. It took about 45 minutes for the three people in front of me to be taken care of and then my car was next. The Y-pipe to my mufflers had a hole and within less than an hour they cut it out, welded a new section in and $150 later (only!) my car was as quiet as it was when I bought it. I bought a car from a friend, and I love it. Problem was, it ran kind of loud since I bought it, and the hole had finally opened up in the exhaust system - it was now REALLY loud. My brother-in-law found the hole; it was right behind the manifold in the flex pipe, and not something we could do ourselves. I called around to the chains and they all told me it would be around $300 for parts and labor. I decided to check the Yelpmosphere and found these guys. They told me they'd do it for $150 installed. They just earned a loyal customer. I showed up and asked what the chances were of getting in that day and the guy said "I'd say pretty good. Drive it in that door there." I drove it onto the lift and went to sit in one of the comfy chairs in the sparsely appointed waiting room. Inexpensive, straightforward and no BS! They will work with you on what you need done, and let you pick the fix you want. SO in my case, when I had a car that I wasn't keeping, I didn't want to put a bunch of money in it, and they told me their 50 buck repair would last a few years...and indeed it did! Been there many times since with other cars, always no fuss and good price. Kinda first-come-first served...phone isn't really their style. Just drive over when you've got some time for them to look. I've never waited more than a half-hour or so for the whole job. Don't expect a cushy waiting room (its actually pretty damn ugly), chatty service, coffee, foot-rubs, or anything luxe like that. Do expect a well-executed, practical solution to your exhaust problems at a fair price. And pop is just 50 cents! Plus there's a nice looking dog in the office sometimes. read more

I came here on January 4, 2017 with the idea of only replacing my exhaust resonator. The bad part is that it is first come, first serve. The GREAT part was that I was able to pull in and my car was hoisted right up! Jason guided me to stand directly in front of the heater (it was a bit chilly outside this day) while he peeked at my car. After a minute or two, Jason came back to tell me that I needed a resonator and I had a bad muffler. After giving me a quote for the replacement of both parts (I can tell you right now that the resonator was $129 +tax), Jason gave me a break on the price to replace everything right then and there. I was literally in and out in maybe 20 minutes from hoist to payment. If you need a muffler/resonator, bring your car here! Oh, they do other work too, including brakes. :-) I must mention that the bathroom was pretty clean, fully stocked with toilet paper, paper towels, soap, AND a garbage can! Thank you, Jason!!! -Side note: If any of you single ladies are looking for a good catch, Jason is easy going, to the point, doesn't make you feel stupid for bringing your car in, clean cut, and even his nails were well kept!
