Do not advise anyone go to this shop. Showed the guy how I wear my hair daily. The barber the pushed my hair line back so far I had to cut it all off after I left. The gentleman seemed to be interested in other things than his customer. The barber had no passion or pride in his work. Worse haircut I've received. I am a very confident man and I have never in my life had a haircut so awful that I was so embarrassed to walk out of the shop for anyone to see. He disregarded my request and did his own thing with my hair, then peeled my hairline back so far I discovered a birthmark I never knew I had! He then injured my forehead with his shears in an attempt to fix his mess. ON TOP OF THAT- after he was finished, doused my face with alcohol so it could get in my eyes, then quickly pushed the mirror in my face to ask how the cut was as if I didn't see his mess half way through the haircut. I tried my absolute best to keep my composure and not go apeshit and politely asked him, "as a barber of 30 YEARS, do you feel comfortable giving your customer this haircut?" He went on to say that he is confident in his cut. I think because of my calm demeanor he thought I would accept it, BUT THEN when I continued to tell him all the things wrong with the haircut, in a professional manner, he tried to deflect the blame on me, his customer, first stating "oh it's the lighting, oh it's the angle you are looking at it, oh this is what you told me to do" WHAT? A MESSAGE FOR MANAGEMENT- It is one thing for a barber to make a mistake, but then try to deflect the blame on your customer for his oversight and mistake is despicable in my book and he should never be allowed to cut anyone's hair unless it's a zero/bald trim. He even messed up my goatee! HE THEN HAD THE AUDACITY- To say that he will charge me half price of $60 and then told me $40 is what I owe. The only reason I paid was because the barber lady next to him was getting stiffed by her customer after she did a wonderful cut to her client. SO CHARLES SINCLAIR IF YOU READ THIS, THE MONEY WAS FOR YOUR COUNTERPART WOMAN NEXT TO YOU who is 10 times the man and barber you will ever be. Having lived in various cities, I've been to dozens of barbershops in my life. Never have I visited a more unprofessional shop than this one. I called ahead of time to ask if they were available for a walk-in, I was told yes. I got to the shop at 7:00 PM. With no other customers in the shop, the barber had me sit there for over 1 hour because he said he had two appointments. In the meantime, he took out garbage, inexplicably disappeared without saying anything, and when the first of his two appointments arrived, he cut his hair... for over an hour. After arriving at 7:00 PM, I finally left at 9:30 PM before he finished cutting the singular customer he had taken since I'd been sitting there. Not to mention it was an awful haircut. Every time I looked over, the customer looked exactly the same. It got to the point that the customer stood up, took the clippers and said "let me help you out," before cutting his own hair in the mirror. Bizarre. Whoever your barber is, stick with them. I've been living in DC for 12 years now and Edges Barber Shop on U St NW is the worse I have been to. The staff is very unprofessional, they keep you waiting while they play video games, leaving the shop while you're waiting on them and don't let you know that they are returning or not. Even when you have an appointment your wait is 45 mins to an hour. I visited the shop back in 2011 and the service was the same then. I decided to give them a second try today and sadly the staff is still the same with new barbers. I would not recommend them to anyone even if they don't have an option, I would tell anyone it's better to do without a haircut than going to Edges Barber shop on U St NW. read more

I had my first haircut from Edges today. I was not let down. The atmosphere is great and very welcoming. It has a nice unique characteristic. I saw some reviews about the video game playing on google, and I truly did not mind it. It was before my appointment time and the workers were enjoying their free time - absolutely nothing wrong with that. I got a cut from Joe, the owner. He was great. I could tell he was paying significant attention to detail. Not once through the haircut did I question anything he was doing. I was very happy with the final product. Also, the prices are very reasonable - especially for being in a busy part of DC. Compared to other barbers of this quality, this is the much better deal. But recently I've been venturing out to the barbers. And I like it. You don't go to a barber for a haircut unless it's something complicated, like a "gumbi". Usually it's the conversation. Stepping into this establishment was like stepping into a movie. The first thing you hear is a theory about how capitalism's focus on monetary wealth has ruined African-American culture. Yeah, I'm home. So I settle in for a five minute haircut that will take a half an hour to accomplish. We discuss music, politics, religion, education, and the mixture thereof. I beg you not to use these barbershop. I went to get my brother a haircut. The owner said I needed to pay before the cut. I said okay, what if the barber doesn't do a good job. Overpriced with horrible service. I have been to at least 30 different barbershops in my lifetime. This is the single most unprofessional shop that i have ever been to. I once traveled about 45 minutes to get to the shop. One of the barbers told me the shop was closed an hour before the scheduled time on Yelp and on the website. He told me that I was begging for a cut and pretty much slammed the door in my face. Another barber tried to charge me to line up my hairline after a cut. Please save your money and just go somewhere else, its not worth it. There are several other options in Washington D.C. UPDATE: I got a direct message on yelp from the owner. I didn't even have the issue with him but this is exactly what he wrote to me: "F U and your money we don't need yo b a. Atrocious. I asked to have a length of hair removed; instead, the barber began a short buzz cut of that length, and he kept me turned away from the mirror so I couldn't see what was going on. By the time I checked, it was far too late. He was distracted, looking at the TV and chatting with others in the shop, and took cuts out of my hair as if slicing the air with a sword. Moreover, days later I'm still finding hair bits on my scalp that are too dark and thick to be my own. The razor used for my shearing was clearly not cleaned between uses. The one redeeming virtue was that I was not charged for my haircut; however, even had the barber not erred spectacularly, I would never return because of the lack of sanitation and professionalism. read more

I found this barber shop by chance when looking for a new barber in the city. It's not the fanciest place, but the barbers are great and always give me a great fade. The ONLY CON is parking. The barbershop is located on U St near the U St. Metro and where you have TONS of restaurants and shopping. Sundays are the best day because many people get their weekend cuts on Friday or Saturday mornings. In this location several barbers are ready for service you. Good barbers but one of the most appealing aspects of the shop (the hours) is arguably among the most frustrating. For the third consecutive time, I've tried to get a hair cut and showed up at a quarter til 9 and each time, the doors were locked with someone getting their hair cut and the shop was closed. I understand making appointments, but oftentimes schedules (like mine) don't permit for making appointments so walk-ins are the best option. It's very frustrating to come across town only to leave and try again with hopes that there would be a better outcome. I would suggest to the management that they revise the hours that are listed here, and I would advise consumers to show up early or call in advance to make an appointment. read more

Cree is the man. I moved to DC in June for an internship, and I came to Edges off of a friend's recommendation. Haven't really been elsewhere since, except once in Maryland. I get tape-ups, and Cree (the barber at the very front of the shop right in front of the window) holds it down every time. The fade is bless. I've seen barbers at Edges charge a pretty penny for a cut, though, so I'm not sure how much you'll have to come out of your pocket, but it's worth it if you let Cree cut you. read more

In terms of service, I thought the barbers were relatively friendly and attentive. However, I left immediately after my haircut to take money out of the bank (they only accept cash for some strange reason) and when I returned, the female barber was going through my backpack while the customers watched...no one told her to stop.
