The place I originally went to further south on 27's parking lot was filled and there appeared to be a large number of people waiting to get in. I did some Yelp research and found this place also had the soupy dumplings although not as good as the first place. I still wanted to get my soupy dumpling fix. I ordered the dumplings and was told it would be a 15 minute wait. I then said let me order something in the meantime so I had the egg drop seaweed soup. After the soup I sat and waited forever until eventually I was asked if I wanted my check. At that point I realized the server thought I ordered the soup instead of the dumplings. An honest mistake but I was extremely disappointed. The server was apologetic but I was truly disappointed. The egg drop seaweed soup was OK. The place looks nice inside. We had a group of 10 which was easily accommodated with comfortable seating. The restaurant is called noodle house but it's only a small part of what they offer. My favorite dishes are their spicy Szechuan dishes like the sliced fish in hot chili sauce, and the cumin sliced fish with dry pepper. The spicy chili with beef noodle is absolutely awesome btw! Although dated, the interior of the restaurant is fairly clean and cozy, with 5-7 tables plus additional counter seating and a single unisex bathroom behind the curtains leading to the kitchen. Upon first glance at the bilingual menu, you should realize that the target clientele is not the typical American "General Tso's Chicken/California Roll" crowd, but rather ex-pats, immigrants, and international students from East Asia, particularly Mainland China and Taiwan. To that end, Edison Noodle House has branded itself as a purveyor of "authentic Taiwanese beef noodles" and various other noodle, rice, and side dishes. I am told that during the school year the tables are often packed with Rutgers grad students. I'm not sure from where the proprietor hails, but as someone who has been to Taiwan fairly recently and subsisted on Taiwanese food for almost a year, I was plainly disappointed by the taste of the 滷肉麵, the portion, the value, and the "authenticity". My one complaint was every time someone opened the door you felt the wind from outside and it was freezing. Maybe install one of those exotic looking portable wall things to block the wind. The beef noodle soup is a bit on the bland side, though not too greasy. You are supposed to add hot sauce and pickled mustard greens (swan tsai) to make it more tasty though, which I forgot to do. The Taiwanese fried noodles dish was quite food - crunchy bits of egg and seafood highlighted the taste. The zha jiang mien was good - with fresh tasting meat, cucumber and bean curd. Here's a 4 star restaurant for one specific dish: beef noodle soup. 10 dollars for a large bowl with ample noodles and beef. They add some A 菜 (think cabbage) and preserved veggies on top. Chewy noodles, tender beef, and a flavorful broth make this dish a must-try here. I have tried most of the other dishes on the menu over the past few years and most are very good with the exception of the various fried rices. The fried rice isn't bad per se, but it doesn't have a lot of meat or vegetables to balance out the amount of rice. The other one dish that threw me off was their version of eggplant, which tasted a bit too sweet and a bit too crispy after the deep fried the eggplant. Also the eggplant was de-skinned so instead of the deep rich purple, it looked like fried bananas, haha. I do like the 刈包, which is a soft bun that they fill with pork belly. I also like their spicy cumin beef. Portion size is reasonable. But if this is your first time, there is a reason they are called Edison noodle house. Get the beef noodle soup. I think this is a great authentic Taiwanese Noodle shop. I give them a solid 5 stars for food taste and value. I recently when there with some foreign students studying here from Taiwan and they said the Beef Noodle Soup and the Taiwanese Fried Chicken were just like back home. Can't get a better review than that for taste! The portions of their noodles and rice dishes are generous, with incredible value for the price. I just held back one star as I dine in with my family and they were light on waiters and you need to be patient when they get busy. The tiny hole in the wall Edison Noodle House on Rt 27 moved to the space next door and is now more than doubled its size. The interior feels spacious with a good number of tables along the windows. There are hot pot slots on the tables but interestingly, they have the "Soho" restaurant logo on them. Maybe they bought these from the soho hot pot restaurant before they closed? Their menu is big and there is a lot to choose from. We saw a few people order the fried rice, which comes served on a plate in a pyramid shape. The menu has a mish mash of different things like Taiwanese beef noodle soup, scallion pancakes, Shanghai rice cakes, fried rice, sesame chicken, hot and sour soup, tomato and eggs, stir fried noodles, noodle soups. We ordered the beef noodle soup, scallion pancakes, beef with scallions, hot and sour soup. Starting with the good stuff- the beef with scallions was very tasty. Flavor was good and beef was tender. The hot and sour soup was fine but the white pepper overpowered the soup. The scallion pancake was deep fried but still thin enough to resemble a scallion pancake. The beef noodle soup wasn't that great. The noodles were over cooked and too soft although the beef was fine. Ordered three dishes and two lacked salt - which was actually very pleasant. The vegetarian chicken is served cold with minimal sauce and scallions so you can really taste the mock meat. Vegetarian Noodle Soup is the perfect cure for a cold - plenty of veggies, not too much salt, big portion. Gotta say the noodles were pretty good. Even if the other reviews did say it wasn't as good. After I tried it, It wasn't as bad as I thought. Even though it wasn't fast coming up but I understand since there is significant shortage in waiter and plus it was in the beginning when they just opened it. Now they seem to have it under control and the food is out pretty fast. I have to speak from heart I saw the people in the kitchen they really do seem busy and I say that from experience. Decor looks like a hole in the wall but why bother about service and decor when 98.88% of y'all come here simply for the so called wonderful and authentic Taiwanese food, especially the beef noodle soup? First the positive(s). They use the beef shanks with the tendon in the center. The tendon would give you a wonderful texture if cooked slowly to tender. (Slow and Low is the way to Go) However... One should expect the beef to be cooked to tender by 12:00 pm. Both mine and my dad's were chewy. Broth was not rich but we sensed no MSG after a few hours passed. Wife ordered the stir fried rice cakes and they were nicely done. One note about the steamed pork buns. They are frozen. We wanted to order but we eventually "let it go". I only ever get the Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodle Soup here, and it's probably the best one I've had here in Central Jersey. Broth is so flavorful, beef is absolutely tender and quite thick.
