The seafood salad was really good, but other than that their sashimi and rolls were mediocre. The sashimi didn't seem that fresh and the salmon almost seemed dyed. It didn't have that fatty and pink coloration I usually see in salmon. The rolls weren't okay but didn't seem to offer much flavor. We sat at the bar and it was really cool watching them make the sushi but it's a pretty small place and gets packed really fast so try to get there early. read more

I adore Edomasa. It's probably my favorite restaurant in SB and I eat here at least once a month, sometimes weekly. Since I have so much experience eating here, let me share some tips on what to get if you're unsure: Their traditional sushi rolls are all excellent and reasonably priced. I find they're freshest on the weekend! The sweet rolls are my second favorite, with a shout-out to the Marina Roll. Their Tempura Udon is the best in town. If you like spicy Japanese mayonnaise, which I do, then Edomasa is a good choice. All their spicy rolls have the spicy mayonnaise, and it's awesome. I like edomasa because they have a huge menu with a lot of different choices, and everything is pretty tasty. I've never had something there that I didn't enjoy. I especially like the basic rolls there such as spicy tuna and spicy california rolls (gotta have that mayo)! Their agedashi tofu is also really good. The sushi here is pretty good. I always get the spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail or any of the speciality rolls when I come here. I wouldn't suggest the salmon roe though... I've had it a few times here and its always been a disappointment. The other sushi items are all pretty good. Every time I come here I have to get the tempura ramen. Something about those tempura flakes and veggies in the ramen. I would give them a 4 but I really do get disappointed about the salmon roe (my absolute favorite). Let it all out and not worry about what ails me. Let the negativity from the weeks and months melt away. Eat..drink..laugh..with good company. But only for a short time... My trip to Santa Barbara ended with a dinner at Edomasa. By the time we were done at Bridlewood Estate, I was quite tipsy. I'm a happy and silly drunk so this has the makings of an interesting and loud time. We arrive 6PM on the dot which is their opening time. There were already about 6 people waiting for the restaurant to open. A good sign... This restaurant was pumped up all week by a friend of mine and it delivered. The place is easily missed. It is located on a small avenue and is small itself. There is nothing special about the exterior or the interior but that never distracts me from the quality of food. The order included yellow tail sashimi, albacore sashimi, spicy tuna roll, and yellow tail tuna collar dinner. Don't forget the cold sake which contributed to my headache and subsequent dehydration. The tuna collar dinner included a sweet and sour cucumber salad, miso salad, and one piece of mochi ice cream. The yellow tail sashimi was excellent quality. It was very fresh, tender, and flavorful. The albacore lightly grilled in the outside so it had light chewy texture but ultra tender in the inside, this too melted in your mouth. I had to try the yellow tail collar to compare to Teru sushi. The collar here was larger because it includes a section of the body behind the collar. It looked beautiful on my plate. It looked like it was baked not grilled. The outside was almost crispy and the meat cooked well. It was a tad dryer than expected but tasted good. The skin was much different being baked not grilled. I like the grilled skin much better and skipped some parts of the skin. The plate includes ponzu sauce which was sour and tasted great with the tuna. All in all the night was filled with laughter and stories. Shared moments that became stories. Great food, great company, great atmosphere, great service, and cool patrons. When we left the restaurant, it was completely full and there were at least another 8 people waiting to eat here. Have you ever had a day where you just didn't want to end? For the convenience of that late night sushi run, Edomasa is there for you. I tagged along with a few friends in the evening to quench my craving for sushi, but I was hesitant (to be fair, I'm always hesitant in Santa Barbara, this is only my second location to try sushi in the area). The parking in their "lot" is atrocious, so be sure to park some ways down the block and take the quick walk. Walking in, the location is slightly cramped but nothing out-of-hand. We were seated within 10 minutes or so, but the waitress seemed a bit rushed and asked for our orders within two minutes of passing off the menus. But, once we asked for more time, she didn't come back until we waved her down. I had the Deluxe Sushi with their Edomasa Roll, the former of which included 8 pieces: _Nigiri (Unagi, Medium Tuna, Albacore, White Tuna, Yellowtail) _Sea Urchin _Salmon Roe The Sea Urchin was a first for me, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I enjoyed what was before me, so I can imagine it'll only get better (?). The rest was not bad, but I expected slightly higher quality or a larger cut for the price ($28.95) They also offer ramen here, so I'll want to give that one a run before I close the book for Edomasa. The sushi here is great! Came in for a late night meal after a hard work out and could not have been more pleased. The restaurant was reasonably crowded for 10:30 on a weeknight, but as I sat at the sushi bar, I had the full and undivided attention of the sushi chef standing directly across from me. I had the toro (absolutely fresh and exceptionally buttery - excellent price too at only $10!), a delicious spicy tuna roll (not pre-made mush like other places, rather the chef cut up thick chunks of tuna and mixed it with greens, cucumber shoots, and an exquisite spicy mayo), and absolutely extravagant yellowtail (firm but tender with a perfect finish). I will definitely be coming back with friends for years to come. So glad I chose to come here! read more

Late night sushi on a Monday night. I had the Santa Barbara roll. It was pretty good, but I've had better. My friend had the green tea ice cream, and that was pretty good too. The place is small and simple. It's an authentic Japanese restaurant and isn't trying to be something else. The wait staff was really nice and attentive, even though we were the last ones in there and I'm sure they just wanted us to leave! Went to Edomasa yesterday (Thursday) around 10PM. A big plus for being one of the few places open that late on a weekday around Santa Barbara. It was also able to seat all ten of us without any waiting which was awesome. The price was decent and the fish quality was very good. I ordered the chiraki sushi which was various pieces of sashimi over a bowl of sushi rice. It came with 11 pieces for me. It included 2 pieces of egg which was good but I was hoping for every piece to be some sort of seafood. Still, for the price, I enjoyed a good meal and was full when I left. It was okay both times I went--but I feel like if I would just put $10-15 dollars into a sushi meal elsewhere I will be much more satisfied and pleased! I was drawn in by the inexpensive prices and especially their $10.95 dinner special--but after two visits am not too impressed. The first time my avocado rolls were hard--the avocado was clearly not ripe. I disliked (and also did the second time) the ginger dressing on the salad. The second time (this weekend) I order the dinner special and gyoza--did NOT like the gyoza--not crunchy enough for me and i could taste the pork way too much. On the bright side my avocado rolls were much improved, but I continued to dislike the ginger dressing on the salad and I felt that the chicken teriyaki was overdressed with teriyaki sauce. I've gone here too many times, but it's satisifying, especially if you venture outside Rolls and do their dinners plates. This place was empty at about 6pm when we rolled in. And it's actually nicer that way. Around 7pm is when it starts getting busy and loud...at least on a Saturday. The prices worked well for us on a budget. Special rolls were between 6-10 dollars-ish. And they had regular rolls for less. The serving sizes were smaller than I was used to, but it's probably more of the average (the sushi places in my town serve large rolls). If anything, the portions were just right. With an appetizer, three special rolls, and a tempura ice cream, the bill came out to about $35 for two people. Oh yea, and they have quite an extensive appetizer list. The good news is that it's open late, aside from that one perk, this little sushi restaurant can be described really easily in one word; average. They used too much wasabi on their sashimi and nigiri for my liking. I have to admit that I am just not a fan of wasabi in general though so my opinion on that is definitely biased. As far as anything with the crab in it they use a very mayo heavy imitation crab which I personally don't prefer. I did enjoy the edamame, miso soup, and spicy tuna rolls, but hey, it's basically impossible to screw those things up. The staff was friendly and we were seated very quickly which was a plus. Being that this was the first time I was taking my fiance for the full-on UCSB tour, I was a bit nervous that Edomasa wouldn't be as good as I thought it was in college. Thank goodness our experience was even better than I remembered! Four of us came here for dinner on Friday night. The three of them ordered three $20 sushi and sashimi combinations, and I ordered my college usual rainbow roll. The sushi here is good and fresh and VERY reasonably priced. You don't come here expecting omakase-quality sushi. The sushi is good but not like $100 per person type good. The fried oysters were only $5.50 and it came with 7 huge pieces that weren't all fatty on the inside. And the tempura ice cream...OH the tempura ice cream. It's still the giant fried ice cream I remember that's the size of my head. LOVE IT! The menu is extensive, and the service is attentive. For all of this, Edomasa is still my number one sushi place in SB --- hands down. read more

I eat here very often. REALLLLY extensive menu; for a while I was going to try to eat everything on it, but there are so many AMAZING things on the menu that I can't even bring myself to branch out. I recommend... 1. Yellowtail kama dinner- perfectly seasoned broiled fish, sunomono, miso, rice and a mochi. My ideal meal. I could eat this 3 times a day for the rest of my life. 2. Steamed clam- Sounds like it's not much, huh? It's on the appetizer list. It's a bowl of a tasty broth with like 20-30 tiny clams in their shells in it. Order some rice with it and it's a meal. 3. Oshinko AND Takuan/Kinpira set- JAPANESE PICKLES. If you love pickles, you have to try these. 4. Mitsumame- It's a fruit cocktail with yummy little gelatin cubes in it! 5. Sukiyaki- Massive bowl of glass noodles, soft perfect tofu the likes of which you'll never find in any store, and nappa cabbage. Comes with a bunch of mystery 'tools' that will perplex any westerner. My boyfriend gets all the rolls, which aren't really my thing, but they're wonderful too. Edomasa is open late, the staff is friendly, and the menu's got something for everyone. My only main gripe is how the food comes to your table. Everything arrives when it's freshly made (cool), but some things take longer to make... so they take longer to get to you. Rolls and sushi come out fast, but udon or kama or sukiyaki can take forever. These are my favorite items, and I'll often not order them because my roll-snarfing boyfriend is always completely done eating by the time my food arrives. read more

My girlfriend and I had a great time at Edomasa's sushi bar just recently. This Santa Barbara staple is one of the town's only late night options. The prices aren't bad either. We first tried the Godzilla roll. The vinegary, garlicky marinated tuna was unlike any kind of roll I've ever tried. Between good laughs an hot miso, we joined one of the servers for a few drinks. She taught us all about Shochu; a Japanese vodka distilled from grain or potatoes. Helps promote longevity. I guess it's like Europeans and their daily glass of red wine. Perhaps just another reason to get drunk.. I was lucky enough to get the last Yellowtail Kama in the joint. That and some hot rice put a nice finish to the night. read more

After living in SB for 5 years and counting, Edomasa is still one of my favorite places to get well-priced sushi and satisfaction at hours when everything else is closed. Their fish is usually fresh and their chefs at the bar are usually very courteous and attentive. Table service is usually not too bad either, friendly even if a little distracted at times. My favorites are the Baltimore Roll, Shrimp Curry Rice, and De La Vina Roll. Sushi snobs may give this place a slightly lower rating, but for SB its one of the better places for experience and taste. read more

Excited to try this place. Me and a friend went here. Like that they have late night hours for the late night crowd but unfortunately we both had a mild case of food poisoning and had different dishes with the exception of the miso (which was different as well). Mine had mushrooms in it and the other was the regular and it tasted fishy--I had a few sips and maybe that was enough to cause...well, you do not need to hear that part (TMI). My friend had the same problem...hmmmmm. Funny thing is other than coffee early in the am, neither one of us had eaten that day. I had the Japanese brown curry which was watered-down in the typical vibrant and unique flavor akin to Japanese brown curry. Additionally, I had a basic California roll cause lets face it, if you mess up on that, you are in trouble. It was not that good. My friend had (I believe it was called) the backed California roll. This was just gross to say the least and I of course sampled it due to its interesting presentation...gross though as if Mexican food had merged with Sushi. At least the prices are okay, not amazing as still too much for their watered-down curry dish. I will stick to the fresher place, Shintori Sushi Factory. They are sometimes a little slow...which is a good thing as it is fresh and worth the wait!!! read more

That's why I started going, and since I found Edomasa I never went to any other Japanese restaurant in Santa Barbara. Edomasa has the best ramen. If you appreciate Japanese food and understand that Japanese food does not mean only sushi, you will love Edomasa. Their sushi is great too. But I always order the Ramen set. Their ramen is to die for. The service is always great. Everything is so fresh and so so cheap compared to most sushi places. The man, whom I presume, to be the owner, is awesome, a charmer! Sit at the bar. Always. Eating at the bar always adds to the experience of eating sushi. The sushi was great, especially for the price. I've been to a lot of sushi places, and in this price range, it's hit or miss with the quality of the fish. No gross white markings or discoloration, no "fishy" taste/smell. Just quality stuff. I had salmon, yellowtail, and white fish tuna plus a spicy tuna handroll to top it off. My partner in crime, and I, come to Santa Barbara often, and I will be sure to frequent this great sushi restaurant. One of the lasting, wonderful things about sushi is the camarderie with the sushi chef. Certainly, the questions about culture, fish, and etiquette make the experience more than food, but atmosphere, too. Although we have had many fine meals at Edomasa, I am compelled to complain bitterly about the experience tonight. We arrived after seven, and the sushi bar was uncrowded. We sat freely, only realizing later that our chef, and one other of the sushi chefs were Latino. The experience that followed was unlike any other that I have had at a sushi restaurant. Our orders were not recognized, requiring a side conversation to a Japanese speaking chef. There was no "chit-chat," nor small talk that we usually associate with the sushi atmosphere. Indeed the conversation was blunt, curt, and unfriendly, even when we digressed to inquiring about the "Spanish" word for an item. (Imagine that! How often have you gone to a sushi bar and inquired about the culture and vocabulary of an item or object in Spanish?) This was not a fun evening. The sushi was standard and not inspiring. The delivery was mundane. I'm sure that the owner was making effort to control the cost of labor. Indeed, we found some of the conversation of the employees behind the bar offensive. The "chinga" part of the Spanish vocabulary should have no place in a restaurant whose emphasis is upon Asian cuisine. This poor rating is particularly focused upon the sushi bar atmosphere and the delivery of food. In our past, we have had great sushi here. We hope things change. In the meantime, we will frequent "Ahi," on upper State Street in Santa Barbara. read more

The food is good. The service is not bad. This has for a long time been one of my favorite restaurants because its open late and the sushi is a really good value. With that said, this review is specifically to address the attitude and lame excuse I got when I complained about the prices not being the same as they are advertised on their website. Not only is false advertising wrong and illegal, it is the one thing that will make your customers seriously lose faith in your integrity. That is the last thing you want as a business. Additionally, to make excuses when confronted about this issue rather than accepting my complaint, apologizing, and offering the difference back makes it even worse. Furthermore, If your excuse is that your website has been outdated since the earthquake in Japan and you just haven't gotten a chance to change it... you do realize that you have been misleading people for more than a year and a half, right? In that time, how many people do you think have been similarly misguided and not said anything? How many bad opinions do you think you have caused? And for what... a change that would take less than two hours to make even if you decided to update your entire menu? Ultimately, as it is in your best interest to advertise lower rates to get more people into your restaurant and ordering take out, I believe it's important to make this change sooner than later now that it has clearly been brought to your attention here on yelp. I assure you Im not trying to be a bully in any way... I'm just passionate about honesty. Update your website that is deceiving anyone that visits it, and Ill be more than happy to remove this review and give you a higher star rating. read more
