Edomasa may not be a sushi poser, but they made a fundamental mistake. I made a reservation for six. They have a policy that parties of six or more will be charged 15% tip. Also, they do not provide separate checks. My party of six turned out to be a party of five; so they did not add the tip. That wouldn't have been a problem since their service was great. Everyone was super friendly and none of our drinks got too low. Also, they accommodated each of us paying with either credit card or cash. Though you get a lot of food if you order one of the sushi combinations, I wasn't interested in getting California rolls or their choice of nigiri. I ordered hamachi, saba and unagi. I also ordered agedashi tofu. When they brought the nigiri, I noticed that they didn't have saba on the plate. I reminded the waitress that I ordered saba. She said, "Yes, that's Spanish mackerel." I didn't have the heart to argue with her that Spanish mackerel is called aji, not saba. Either way, I knew I said "saba"; so either the waitress entered the wrong information or the sushi chef doesn't know the difference between saba and aji. The nigiri was good, but I wasn't wowed by the quality. The agedashi tofu was decent. In the end, I had less food but a larger bill ($25) than my table mates. So, either you can pay a lot for what you want or pay less for their combinations. I wouldn't resist a return visit; however I would want to try a roll or their donburi and try to keep my bill well under $20! read more

I'm totally perplexed by the low ratings here. This is one of my favorite sushi places! The fish is extremely fresh. This is my go-to place for Aji. Please note that I only order nigiri-zushi. Man this place has gone down unfortunately. They have one particularly rude server there now too. She is rude and illogical. We sat at the sushi bar and requested a move to a different table that was open. After confirming with her there was no wait list and the table was completely open, she refused on grounds of who knows what. I went to Edomasa for the first time two nights ago and was pleasantly surprised by the menu - it's definitely a legit japanese restaurant with a lot of options apart from their sushi bar. I decided to go with the ramen, to see if it was at all like the genuine article. I ordered the pork ramen, and my boyfriend got the miso ramen. They both had chashu pork in them, and lovely opaque broth. The pork broth was a bit thin for my taste, and there wasn't a huge amount of flavor to it, but I absolutely loved the thick, slightly spicy taste of the miso ramen, so we actually switched bowls. I stole a bit of julienned ginger from the pork ramen, however, as it was an excellent touch. Although the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired (card tables and metal chairs), the service was attentive, the prices were good, and the menu expansive. I will be back! read more

A friend and I came to eat here as a sort of last resort. They were the only sushi bar we could find in SB that closed as late as 1am. My friend ordered the Santa Barbara roll, which came out to be extremely salty for some reason. She didn't even finish it. I think I ordered the sukiyaki don, which was meh. The beef was really dry and bland. I probably could have ordered a better beef bowl at Yoshinoya. Needless to say, my friend and I were pretty disappointed for the night. read more

This late night sushi joint features fresh sushi and a changing menu of specialty nigiri sushi based on the day's catch. Gems of the menu include: The spicy cajun tuna, a tuna with a spice rub that delicately cuts through the fattyness of the tuna hitting the tongue with just a touch of heat and leaving you wanting more. Sweet shrimp, a raw sweet shrimp tops a small bed of sushi rice and accompanied with the cunchy fried shrimp heads on the side. Anago (Seawater Eel), one of the few places in Santa Barbara to serve the brother to the more common unagi (freshwater eel). Anago has a slighty more fishy taste and is covered with the same sauce. I'm a huge fan of my neighborhood sushi joint, they have a lot to offer on the menu and it's all pretty damn tasty. The people who work there are pretty speedy and attentive too, much appreciated on that. My favorite roll from here is the Buffalo Volcano Roll, I always order it. Don't order SASHIMI from this restaurant. I ordered sashimi assortment, which comes with 6 kinds of sashimi. It taste so bad, not fresh at all, the texture feels funny, I couldn't even finish the it... We also ordered deep fried chicken, taste ok. Sushi roll combo which including California roll, salmon skin roll & spicy tuna roll, taste meh. And beef curry udon taste fine. The sushi chef at the bar was friendly during my visit. We ordered a few things and we're surprised by the great taste for a late night Sushi bar! I recommend the raw oysters that are served with a delicious ponzu style sauce and sriracha. They were beautifully presented and fresh! The uni was delicious and fresh but the sushi rice did not appear to be prepared with vinegar or seasoning. The ramen I ordered was beautiful and was served with an array of toppings such as pickled radish, corn, and scallions but was very salty. read more

Why do I go to Edomasa? Well...because I won't be a true "Santa Barbarian" if I don't. I am sure other locals would agree. The best thing about this place...well, you can eat good sushi without burning a whole in your wallet. Why is there 1 star missing in this review - it's not Arigato where everything is fancy and pretty. This is like your good ole' Honda civic - reliable, stable, economical. The food: The menu is pretty big so even if you don't eat raw fish, you have a lot to choose from. I LOVE the Godzilla roll - a roll wrapped with tuna and yellowtail that are marinated in olive oil and garlic. Pretty unique. Volcano roll - decadent and good for the no-raw fish folks. Something hot? Katsu don - fried pork chops, eggs, over rice...that should keep you pretty happy if you've been starving all day. The service: Mihoe, Taka, Tai, Sato...I know them all. Good people, big smiles. They get busy so don't expect service like you're at some 5 star restaurant but they'll take care of you. Oh...yeah...like Mark D. I like the backdoor parking and that VIP feeling. The best things about this place - it's one of the few places in SB that opens late. They close at midnight on weekdays and 1am on weekends. The sushi is very good, but the late-night hours are the really great thing about Edomasa. There aren't a lot of places open late in SB, and it's so much better to be here than to be at Denny's. Also, I think "Buffalo Volcano" is really funny. If you are ever in a bad mood, just think about the buffalo volcano and it will distract you from your problems. Is it a volcano shaped like a buffalo? Or is it a volcano that shoots buffalos out the top? I know what I think, but I won't tell you because it's important to form your own opinion. read more

Dropped into SB for an overnight stay and got in the mood for sushi. Edomasa was one of the few places that was open late, and it came with some good recommendations, so we stopped in for a late-night dinner. We usually sit at the sushi bar so that we can talk with the chef and watch him prepare the meal. As luck would have it, two seats opened up at the bar when we arrived. So, we slid right in. We started with some unfiltered sake and then tried some fatty tuna sushi to whet the appetite. This was followed by the sushi boat - which was more than we expected for the $35 price tag. The food was good, the service was quick, and we had a good time. Surprisingly, the place was still full at 10:00 PM - and this on a Tuesday night. Parking can be tricky, and you'll likely have to wait for a table if you come during normal eating times. Other than that, it was worth the trip. We'll be back. read more

There are definitely better places, and this one was probably a one time deal for my boyfriend and I. After hearing rave reviews from a friend and loyal customer of Edomasa, I rushed over to get a glimpse of a new place with amazing sushi. It disappointed me. The sushi was... acceptable and mildly enjoyable but nothing compared to Tomodachi (Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks), I Love Sushi (Ventura) or Shiki in LA. So there's the bottom line: there are much better places. To add, customer service was hardly existent. I don't have particularly high expectations and it takes a bit to disappoint me, so to have every employee with a melancholy, lack luster expression on their faces to match their attitude was just too much. I kept thanking the waitress and sushi chef (we sat at the bar), however all we ever received in return was a frown or blank expression. Upon leaving I gave a proper thanks, palms on my thighs, bowed and spoke the little Japanese I know, to perhaps let them know I know that their behavior not only is rude and distasteful here in the states but would be appalling in Japan. This place is all about quantity over quality. Stay away if you know ANYTHING about good, fresh sushi. They mix ingredients in rolls that on the pallet become something you end up forcing down your throat. I ordered the Hip Hop Roll, Buffalo Volcano Roll and Godzilla Roll. I was most disappointed with the Godzilla the garlic/olive oil with tuna resulted in a old taste opposite of the allure of fresh ingredients it is made with. I adore Edomasa. It's probably my favorite restaurant in SB and I eat here at least once a month, sometimes weekly. Since I have so much experience eating here, let me share some tips on what to get if you're unsure: Their traditional sushi rolls are all excellent and reasonably priced. I find they're freshest on the weekend! The sweet rolls are my second favorite, with a shout-out to the Marina Roll. Their Tempura Udon is the best in town. Far and away my favorite sushi restaurant in Santa Barbara. Open late night this became an all too often pit stop after some downtown drinking at the bars. Very reasonable prices, good fish (if not quite up to par with Arigato), the friendliest chefs around, and some great unique appetizers and starters. I highly, highly recommend the miso eggplant or the enoki in butter sauce for starters. The sushi here is great! Came in for a late night meal after a hard work out and could not have been more pleased. The restaurant was reasonably crowded for 10:30 on a weeknight, but as I sat at the sushi bar, I had the full and undivided attention of the sushi chef standing directly across from me. I had the toro (absolutely fresh and exceptionally buttery - excellent price too at only $10!), a delicious spicy tuna roll (not pre-made mush like other places, rather the chef cut up thick chunks of tuna and mixed it with greens, cucumber shoots, and an exquisite spicy mayo), and absolutely extravagant yellowtail (firm but tender with a perfect finish). I will definitely be coming back with friends for years to come. So glad I chose to come here! read more

I was so disappointed in this place!!! I cannot stress that enough. The menu was impressive, I'll give them that much. But the rolls we got were neither tasty nor fresh. The rainbow roll was disgusting. The fish were stale and smelly. The buffalo roll was decent but not something I would order again. It had way too much cream cheese. The service was spotty. It took forever to flag down our waittress to get the check. I don't understand why this place was so highly rated. Decent sushi..nothing spectacular. On the evening I went here, my friend and I had planned to visit Arigato (my favorite sushi place), but he couldn't afford it. So we went to Edomasa, which came highly recommended from him. We arrived around 7:30 on a Friday night and only waited 5 or so minutes until we were seated. We shared the tiger roll, the Mexican roll, and the crunchy roll. These rolls are big. If you want quantity, you will find it here. The Mexican roll was slathered in spicy sauce. Now, I like a bit of spice, but the fact that the sauce was tossed all over the roll turned me off. I would much prefer the Fiesta roll from Arigato, where they serve sauce on the side and you can dip it in. Plus, Arigato tasts fresher and more dynamic..more innovative. Anyways, it's decent sushi, but nothing I would return to. read more
